Strip xmlroot?

Hi there,
I was wondering what is the correct way to strip the xmlroot element fron an incoming document? I'm running across problems involving multiple incorrect definitions of this element when implementing result sets for queries on my data so I thought working with xml fragments instead of documents would be simpler.
So, for example, I want to go from storing:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<foo>
<bar>baz</bar>
</foo>
to storing just:
<foo>
<bar>baz</bar>
</foo>

You known you are, then, losing information right!?Yes. Our database is configured for US-ASCII encoding and anyway we don't deal with non-standard english characters.
I really don't see how else I can do a search on my table and return a stack of documents together in some kind of wrapper xml. The problem I keep encountering is that the encoding element appears for every matched document which breaks things when I try to work with the wrapper document.
If so you could get rid of this using xml functions
like extract, extractvalue, etc...Cheers. :)
If you have any thoughts on how I might better achieve the above your comments would be appreciated.
