Stuck at "checking midi servers" in startup screen in Logic express. OS X Lion

I've recently updated to the new Lion, and all off sudden, I can't open my Logic Express anymore. It gets stuck in the loading screen at "checking midi drivers". Does anyone know how to solve this?

  • Logic pro 9 "checking midi drivers" at startup

I recently switched from an imac running os x snow leopard to a newer one running lion. I use protools Le 8.0.4 with an avid mbox, gen 003. This combo always worked great under snow leopard. I installed it in lion and it also works like a charm, except i just bought logic pro 9 from app store, and it seems to get stuck in "checking midi drivers" at startup.
I looked at several previous posts and found the solution was to delete the old digidesign midi drivers from the library>audio>midi drivers folders, which i did and now logic is apparently working fine. Problem is, obviously protools doesn't work now. So it's either one or the other with this solution. There are 4 plugin files in this folder: digidesignfirewiremidi.plugin, avid mbox promidi.plugin, digidesignmbox2midi.plugin, digidiomididriver.plugin.
Am i going to have to keep deleting/restoring these files from the midi drivers folder whenever i wanna switch from logic to protools in the future?? Is it safe to keep doing this long term, or is there another solution i haven't found?
Also, does anyone out there know if it would be helpful to upgrade to protools 8.0.5? Or would i just be asking for more trouble?
    Thanks in advance...

  • MIDI plays in GarageBand, but not Logic Express

hi, all...when i drag or import a MIDI file that i know works in GarageBand into Logic Express, i can see all the different tracks and notation, but when i press play, no sound comes out, tho the measure line is moving and the volume indicators are lighting up.
    any clue what's going on?

This has already been discussed here numerous times. You should do a search on the forum and read the Logic for Garage Band Users pdf. When you open a midi file in Logic, the tracks are not assigned to virtual instruments like in GB, they're only midi tracks. If you want to hear sounds, you have assign them to an external sound module, to the QuickTime synth available in Logic or you have to create audio instruments tracks and move you midi data to those.

  • How can I midi Roland TD-9 KX2 with Logic EXpress 9?

    Hello everyone,
    Here is my setup:
I have the Roland TD-9 KX2 connected to M-Audio MIDI In & Out and Audio 1/4" In & Out, Then connected to Logic 9 thru USB on my MacBook Pro.
I create a new track and select Audio and then I create another track and this time I choose External.
When I hit record, the audio track shows waveform recorded but the External/MIDI does not.
Note: When I'm recording, I can see the MIDI notes (look like little blocks), but when I stop recording, They disappear...
Can someone please tell me how I can execute this or of if anyone has a tutorial that they can share link of it.
    Thanks in advance,

I had a simular problem. Only I had Ver 9 and needed 9.1.4 to be compatable with Lion. I had installed Lion and didn't think I would have any problem with Apple apps. Not the case with Logic Express. Here is what I did.
First: I removed all versions that were previously installed on my Mac Pro. Then using the latest (9.0) I reinstalled. Important. DO NOT TRY TO OPEN APP. Next: down load (free) version 9.1.4 and install. Once everything is closed and disks are removed. Start Logic Express 9.1.4 and guess what...if just works.
I believe some of the residual files were residing in my library some place and I didn't see them. Before I reinstalled I was recieving the message that I didn't have a qualifing version of Logic Express. This is when I had two versions 9.0.0 and 9.0.1. Someone said to remove the older version, I didn and nothing.
Do what I say above and you will be rewarded.
    Good Luck

  • Gets stuck on checking midi drivers at launch

After upgrading to Lion 10.7.5, Logic Pro 9 Version 9.1.7 gets stuck on lauch checking for midi drivers. I also recieve an error pop up that says:" Error initializing Core Midi. faulty driver? Please restart computer."  I did that, but still getting stuck. I also don't have any midi drivers in my preference library>audio>midi drivers. Anybody have a solution? Should I download new midi drivers? Reinstall Logic 9 again?

Probably because you have ProTools installed. The Digi/Avid core MIDI driver is not 100% Lion compatible and Logic can't initialize it.
It needs to be be moved out of the MIDI Drivers folder.
    Usually found here
    ~Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers
You may need to flush the caches and reboot after moving it.

  • Routing midi from an ableton arpeggiator into logic express

anyone know if possible to recieve the midi from ableton 6 running as rewire slave into logic instrument ? ie use the live arpeggiator rather than logic one ?

I don't think you can do that with Rewire but you certainly can do it with IAC driver in the AudioMidiSetup. However, to do that, you can't run Live as a Rewire slave. Therefore, you'll have to start Live before Logic.
To be able to use the IAC driver, go to the Audio Midi Setup and Get Info for the IAC driver. Select the ports tab and add a port. This port should now be available both in the Live output and the Logic input.

  • OS X 10.10.3 can't boot past startup screen

I've updated my 2009 iMac to OS X 10.10.3 and it can't be booted to the login screen after that. The progress bar will be stuck at 50% forever on the startup screen — the longest I've waited was about a day and the iMac was really hot as well. I tried getting into Recovery Mode and did a disk repair and it managed to repair 4 permission errors, but there's one permission that persisted and it says (Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired). I rebooted again but it still can't boot past the startup screen.
Unfortunately, I can't reformat OS X because my backup copy from Time Machine has been outdated for a few months as I haven't bought another backup drive to continue using it.
One of the options that I could think of is to reinstall another copy of OS X from Recovery Mode, as it is able to retain my data files. But the problem is that my iMac has only 5 GB of free space, and it doesn't allow me to do that. Is there a way to use the Terminal in Recovery Mode to delete some of my apps and files so that I could install a copy of OS X? Or are there any other ways to solve it?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've managed to solve this issue by using a very simple and straightforward method.
I remembered Macs have this nifty feature called FireWire Target Disk Mode by pressing and holding "T" on the keyboard the moment you turn it on. So I went to get myself a FireWire 800 cable and connect it to my MacBook Pro, activated FireWire Target Disk Mode on my iMac (Target) and browse the files from my MacBook Pro (Host). I deleted some files, recovered some free space, disconnect, reboot, reinstall OS X in Recovery Mode and — voila! — my iMac is back running OS X Yosemite with all my data files and settings again.

  • $5 Starbucks card to first successful answer: how to import midi timecode into Logic Express 9 from Roland VS-880 or Ensoniq ASR-10

I will literally mail a $5 Starbucks card or gift $5 via paypal to the first person whose response gets me success.  Then after all responses are provided and I'm successful with my issue, I'll also raffle off $5 to one of ALL respondents by random pick.
    Problem/question:
I can't figure out how to import midi timecode data from either an Ensoniq ASR-10 or Roland VS-880 Vxpanded into Logic Express 9, so I can then use Logic Express 9 as the master.  No manuals seem to explain that; I just can't find it.
    Background/basics:
    1.  My ultimate goal will be to move all midi data from the Ensoniq ASR-10 floppies and all digital audio files from the VS-880 into Logic Express 9.  Once the midi timing is imported into a Logic Express 9 file, I'll import the data from the Ensoniq & Roland via steps 2a & 2b below.
1a.  Ten years ago I somehow (am in the process of re-learning what I did 10 years ago) imported the midi timing into the Roland VS-880 Vxpanded from the ASR-10, and then used the VS-880 as the Master to control the ASR-10.   So my current status is that I use the Roland VS-880 as the master, and the Ensoniq ASR-10 as the slave.
    2.  FYI for anyone who might be in the same boat, wanting to transfer stuff from an Ensoniq ASR-10 and Roland VS-880 to the computer:
2a.  I will import all midi sequence data from my ASR-10 floppy disks via a utility purchased here, which will all a PC to read Ensoniq-formatted disks, and then just hopefully cut/paste midi files into Logic Express 9 (FYI only):  www.chickensys.com
2b.  Then will import all the individual WAV files from my Roland VS-880 to Logic Express 9 using a method learned here (FYI only): http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=985974&PHP SESSID=b1d2f57be4a1d37d49787400213b22df
2c.  I'll then combine them all into Logic Express 9.
So - how the heck do I capture/import the midi timecode into Logic from either the roland or ensoniq using midi?
I'm don't think that cutting/pasting the midi data into a Logic Express 9 sequence file (step 2a above) will do that, because there are all kinds of tempo & time signature changes in the midi files unfortunately.
    THANK YOU and Merry Christmas!!
    Andy

  • Macbook Pro stuck at startup screen.

I've ran Disk Utility, there were problems that were fixed, but it's fine now (I've ran it again to double check), and I've ran Apple HHardware Test and I received" no trouble found".
But everytime I try to start up it gets stuck on the grey startup screen with the apple and the oration under it. So I'm at a loss at this point.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

System files are missing or damaged so you need to reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If you have an earlier version of OS X installed then do this instead:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Stuck on startup screen after 10.9.1 update

so, my app store had been bugging me to do updates for about a month and I finally did them today.  Then, Google Chrome kept crashing every time I tried to open it so I rebooted into recovery mode and ran the disc verification.  It got stuck on the startup screen, so I tried to restart it again... got stuck on the startup screen again... went back into recovery mode and repaired permissions and now it's been stuck on the startup screen for 1/2 an hour.  Help??

    Jamie,
Since your wife knows how to use the installer DVD for maintenance, ask her to do a "Repair disk" on the startup drive. (Repairing permissions is something else.) However, also ask her if by 'no effect' she means repairing permissions could not be done or reported no permissions problems with the drive. If the latter, it is good news in that it at least means Disk Utility found a valid system to check permissions on. Anyway, let us know the results of the repair disk step, particularly any messages about repairs that were attempted.
It is unfortunate that you don't have some files backed up but hopefully we can get your Mac back up to speed without losing anything. If they are highly critical files, you may want to consider waiting until they can be offloaded to another Mac using Target Disk Mode or similar techniques, since any write to the drive has some (if generally very small) chance of overwriting data.
Be aware that there have been some reports of problems associated with certain scanners & external drives, & not just with this update. I have no firsthand experience with this, so I can't tell you exactly what they are, but I suggest you disconnect them until the problem is resolved.
Hopefully, these three steps will get you closer to a fully-functioning, bootable Mac, but either way, keep us informed.
Oh, one other bit of advice in the meantime: if you haven't already, give an authentic, Chicago deep crust pizza a try before you leave. I like Pizzeria Uno or Due, but there are others.

  • Itouch stuck on startup screen-please help!

My itouch has been stuck on the startup screen since last night; first I tried letting it charge, and after 30 minutes with no results I unplugged it, let the battery drain completely and started again. After another hour of charging with no results I tried restarting it, again with no results-upon restarting it returned to being stuck on the startup screen. This morning I tried letting it drain again and it became extremely hot until it turned off again. A while ago I plugged it into my computer, hoping to reset and restore it, but it is now, once again, stuck on the startup screen. It's not even being recognized by iTunes or my computer. My ipod is NOT jailbroken btw. Please help!! I don't think I can go on much longer without my music lol

What do you mean by startup screen?
    Try here:

An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is likely in order since the hotness tends to indicate as hardware problem.

Had the laptop for 11 months no issues, I woke up to find the computer stuck on the startup screen. Tried rebooting, took out the battery, tried it pluged in, unpluged and it keeps stopping at the startup screen. Any suggestions?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello mate,
Unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery.
Then, you push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals.
Next, you push and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Then you put the battery back in and push the power button to turn on the computer.
    See if it works.

    Try:

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad R500 gets stuck on the startup screen

    Hello!
I searched for a solution but couldn't find one.
In my company we only use Thinkpads and I got an R500 wich was replaced by a newer model.
It was working (I saw it), the admin told me he would delete the bios-password. He opened BIOS->Security (did see wich password he changed) closed it and gave it to me.
Now on startup it is stuck on the startup screen saying "To interrupt normal startup, press blue ThinkVantage button", and no button does anything. I removed CMOS-Battery but still the same.
    Any help appreciated
