Stuck Crop Area...

Been using Illustrator forever, never had this problem...
I create a custom crop area [either using the tool, or changing a shape to a crop area via the menu bar] - this used to work fine, i could then save for web and export the image...latley though this isn't happening.
Now the crop area is stuck to the artboard, regardless of any changes I make. I do ton of web work and my files are all over, so its not practical for me to resize the artboard and fit things into it.
Did I change a setting or press something i've been unaware of for 5 years?
Can anyone help me out? - BTW currently using CS3
Thanks
JP

is there some sort of shortcut to do that? I've never gone into that tab ... ever - didnt know it even existed.

When cropping in Acrobat X Standard, I am no longer able to override the crop area and make adjustments in Acrobat X Standard. All options are grayed-out.
This seems to be a relatively new issue, but I'm not sure when I started having the problem. While use the tool frequently, it's not daily, but I'd say that this is within the past couple of weeks.
I've scoured the settings. I've trolled message boards. I've checked for updates. I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing or if I need to do a full reinstall.
I've inserted an image below showing the issue. (Changing the page range and/or units seems to make no difference. I tried that out of desperation.
    Thanks, folks!

Wow!  All fixed.  I ran defaults delete -g which did not show immediate improvement, but then I rebooted.  I must admit I did a Safe Boot, just to throw in one other solution I had seen.  However, everything is back to normal.  Thanks very much.

  • Illustrator CS4: Exporting as cropped image, unable to define Crop Area or Crop to Artboard

Preface: I am using Adobe Illustrator CS4 Design Premium, Windows version.
I am currently designing some projects in Illustrator CS4. I am NOT using multiple artboards, only one. On previous versions of Illustrator, users could simply Export> an image as a JPG, and the image would be appropriately cropped to either the Document size, or predetermined Crop Area marks which were easily chosen in the Object dropdown menu.
Since the ever useful Object > set cropmarks function was removed with the advent of CS4, I am unable to Export an Illustrator file as a high-res JPG or TIF using the supposed Artboard as the cropmarks. In other words, when trying to export my project, the saved/exported image includes all content placed in the document, even material that extends beyond the Document size or Artboard size. Why is this? What am I overlooking?
In the Artboard dialogue or settings, I cannot locate any option to set the Artboard as the default crop area for Exporting, saving, and printing, etc.
After doing a bunch of research trying to find a fix, I have only discovered that there are thousands of other people posting on various forums regarding this same issue, so I think a detailed and complete explanation or instruction on how to do this would be very helpful and appreciated.
Other than in the Save For Web & Devices settings, there seems to be no options to Export using cropmarks, or export a file to be properly cropped to the Artboard dimensions. Again, I know this function is possible when Saving for Web, but not with a normal high resolution Export as a flattened image such as a jpg... or at least I can't find out how.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Yeh this is pathetic and in my opinion a bug or false advertising. Since they haven't fixed it i believe this is false advertising and misleading for users who may have upgraded for this "feature".
I do know some CS2 users who are holding out from upgrading for this reason!!
I wonder what CEO's or higher ups would say if they heard or could understand this issue...How does program loose features meanwhile Adobe has how many billions in resources to fix these type of issues for their users who paid a pretty solid chunk for software that should work properly.
Need some competition to fire them up! (any alternatives to illustrator anyone actually using?)

  • CS5 Crop area + export jpeg

Hi everyone! Just got CS5 (very exciting). Upgraded from CS3. Now in CS3 you could just go Object>Crop Area>Make then when you export as jpeg only what is on the art board will show up on the jpeg. I've seen other people talking about the art board tool and such but I dont want to change the size of the art board or make crop marks, I just want to set an area in which the jpeg will export with out having to remove any thing else on my document. Thanks!

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

Great tip! and its easy to do.  I wish there was a FAQ on this site because tips like this one would be a great help.

  • Define multiple crop area's, same size with overlap

Is it possible to define multiple croparea's at once in CS3/CS4?
Is it possible to define them and move each crop area a certain amount?
I want to split a citymap into different page's (like an atlas) and export them separately as PDF or EPS.

    Daniel,
You are not going to get Illustrator to replicate your FreeHand workflow. So far, every new function which Illustrator has borrowed from FreeHand since Adobe aquired it (including multiple pages) has fallen far short of FreeHand's treatment.
There still is no Lens feature in Illustrator. There still is no option to export just the selection (absolutely stupid).
Yet another unsatisfying workaround that might work for youi in CS3:
If you haven't already, in Document Setup, set the artboard to the size of the full map.
In the Print Dialog, General pane, set Media Size to the desired size for one portion of the map.
In the Print Dialog, Setup pane, set Tiling to Tile Full Pages. Click Done (not Print).
View>ShowPageTiling. Illustrator displays dotted lines indicating the numbered page tiles. You can get the utterly lame Page Tool (it's under the Hand tool), and click somewhere to set the page tiling origin where you want it (usually at the bottom left of the Artboard.
Save A Copy as PDF. Turn on the option for Create Multi-page PDF from Page Tiles.
The resulting PDF will have separate pages, with the map sliced up according to the Page Tiles. The artwork does not actually get sliced; objects which cross the bounds of a PageTile just get masked in the PDF.

  • Multiple Artboards CS4 versus Crop Area CS3

    If i'm getting this right,
    1. CS 4 doesn't haven the Crop Area tool anymore.
    2. Artboards are limited to 100 artboards per document depent there size.
    Question;
Is it possibel to create an artboard from an element/object as you could with Crop Area?
Because in this way you could save "unlimited" artboard "templates" in your document for reuse.

-Multiple artboards are a step forward.-
Hmm I'm missing here something... Why is the crop Area tool gone? maybe because multiple artboards is the one to compentsate for it?
And well it didn't , there are several discussions about that going on. Croparea's will be converted to artboards in CS4
    >>You can't create an artboard from an object. That is indeed one limitation I'd like to see lifted. You can create one artboard and just toggle different layers if needed. I guess I don't really understand the problem<<
The problem is i've got a citymap, dimensions lets say 1000 mm x 1000 mm and I want to make an atlas from it.
In other words I want to take several 150 mm x 210 mm fragments of the original map and put them on seperate pages.
In Freehand I could make reference rectangles and give them a lensfill and export object only as an eps, pdf etc.
In CS3 I could make Crop Areas from the reference rectangles and export as pdf etc.
In CS4 crop areas is gone and will be converted to Artboards (i read in the forum).
I need the reference rectangles because everytime I export the litlle fragment it must be the same and on the exact same place.
The only way to do this in CS4 is to manualy move the page and bring it in line with the rectangle......
Anyone some other idea's? it's crucial for my workflow and I'm looking if Illustrator is capable to do this so we can switch...

  • Crop Area Tool - Illustrator CS3 (javascript)

Can Javascript use the Crop Area Tool in Illustrator CS3?
I am trying to create a crop area around the selected artwork.
I can select the artwork (path object). Then I want to use the preset: crop to selected artwork. Then save, and repeat for next file.
    Is this possible using javascript?

I don't know how far you have been up to with your code. I never really cropped the artwork by code, I only placed the crop marks using this code:
    aiDocRef.cropBox = [-bld, docH+bld, docW+bld, -bld];
You could use the bounds of the selected graphics instead.
Since I've never scripted the printing in Ai, I cannot tell you how to crop while printing, but this might get you started. In CS4 they introduced multiple artboards, which requires different code for cropping, as far as I can see from the ref PDF.
    cheers,

  • Crop area in CS 4

What's the quick easy way to crop area in CS 4 so that an exported
jpeg will crop to that area? (used to be create rectangle over area, then Object>Crop Area>Make)
    Thanks

What you can do with the artboards is to create create artboards with in artboards allowing you to use it as the crop area tool but on steroids.
Say you have a document with 16 artobards which you intend ti use as pages or the like. Then you have art on several of these artboards you want to export as jpegs. zBy holding the shift key while the artboard tool is select you draw an artboard within that artboard but slightly larger than the art you want it to crop to and use the command under the artboard options to fit artboard to selected art. So now you end up doing this to say twenty select art objects and you want a jpeg of ach, in the export to jpeg dialog you select use artboards and then select the numbers of the artboards you want to export using a comma between the numbers to select an non continuous range of artboards. Click save and all the artboards are exported as individual jpegs.
Now say you want to crop into some of the cutting off some of the art well you hold the shift key as before and you draw your artboard to the cropping you like now you an include these artbards with the others when exported or just select the artboards that tim the art.And you will get indidual jpegs as you defined the cropping with the artboards all in one click.
Save for the web does not have this feature though it would be excellent if it did. Although you have the option to use the selected artboard.
There are other advantages as well and I have a feature request to name artboards which will make this type of exporting even more beneficial but as we know those type of features either never get implemented or take three or four versions to be implemented.
So your feature is still really there but enhanced.

  • Crop Area Tool leaves a small border when using Save for Web

A grain of sand as problems go; tiny but irritating.
    The process:
Click on an object (or grouped objects) with the Crop Area Tool.
Click File, and Save for Web and Devices
    The problem:
The resulting image is offset one pixel from the crop area box, leaving a white or gray border on one or more edges. No empty space between the image and crop area box is detectable when zoomed in all the way. All measurements appear accurate.
I'm using Illustrator cs3 13.0.2, with Windows XP.
Has anyone else come across this problem?

Yeah I have the same problem and it is incredibly frustrating!!

  • Did CS4's multiple artboards kill any crop area capabilities?

I'm still gobsmacked by the multiple artboard stuff... but I see my favorite CS3 feature, multiple crop areas is gone (or at least appears to be gone).
I came to depend rather heavily on multiple crop areas -- so I'm anxious that some facet of them cannot be replicated by the multiple artboards.
The interface to manage multiple artboards is very very similar... certainly enhanced in some ways too.
What confuses me about them is a statement I saw somewhere that each artboard has it's own layers, symbols, swatches. If so, then this would be a loss for me, as I depended on having one meta-infrastructure for all print crop areas.
Another aspect I have not seen explained very much is whether artboards can overlap. If each artboard has its own layers, and you can have overlapping artboards, I don't really see how artwork that overlaps both boards is handled.
So maybe the statement I saw about not sharing document meta-infrastructure across artboards is false?
I'm definitely handicapped by not having the app installed yet.
    envelope

Save for web and device never gave the option to save as psd?
But is you are using save for the web ten under image size there is the option to clip to artboard which will give you your 1920 x 1080.
However if you want to export it as a Photoshop and do not want the art outside of the art board to be exported then you can check the option at the bottom left of the bottom left og the export to photoshop dialog to use artboards.
I will point out that if you use this option you will notice it gives you the option to export all the artboards meaning if you place all of your previous files in one ai document you will only have to do one export for all the files you don't even need an action though an action to place the files in a document might save you yet more time.
So they made an improvement that works much better but it requires that you look a bit more carefully to find the feature even though it is right there in front of everyone. So always look for something that is f=different from before that is usually the answer.
I hope this is what you are looking for.
There maybe times when you want the art outside of the document to be included so now you have a clear choice.

Safari problem: iOS7 on iPad - Apple ID Support - Stuck on "Are you sure you want to submit this form again?"
Now Safari is totally stuck. Neither the "submit" nor the "cancel" button works.
Since verifying Apple ID requires Safari (Google Chrome doesn't work because verifying email links only to Safari), it is impossible for me to change my Apple ID preferences.
    HELP!!!!

Close Safari completely and reboot the iPad.
Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the Safari app and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Using crop to change aspect ratio, but now is there a way to shift the footage without moving the cropped area?

    Hi guys!
I'm new and not sure if this is the correct way to go about this. I am using the crop tool to achieve 2.35:1. But is there a way to transform my footage "beneath" the cropped area or do I always have to create a composition in AE and put a black bar layer on top?
    Thanks in advance!

I would create the black bars in the title designer and put that on the highest video track of your sequence.

                        sel.left = docLeft; // dito for Left

  • TV Safe Area vs. Standard Crop Area ?

    What is the difference between:
    View - TV Safe Area
    and
View - Standard Crop Area ?

    This is from iDVD Help.
+_Checking the TV safe boundaries of an iDVD menu_+
+*When you create a project, you may not know what kind of technology viewers will use to watch your DVD. For example, if you create a widescreen project and your viewers have standard television screens, some parts of your DVD may not be visible. Also, some television sets may not show the outer edge of your DVD menus and movies.+*
*+If you know that your DVD will be viewed on a television screen (not a computer screen), you can check your project to make sure all elements of it will be visible to viewers.+*
+To see the TV safe boundaries for your project:+
+Make sure the menu you want to check is showing in the iDVD window.+
    +Choose View > Show TV Safe Area.+
+A shaded area appears on the menu. The inner area that is not shaded is visible on most television sets.+
+If your project is widescreen, with a 16:9 aspect ratio, choose View > Show Standard Crop Area.+
+The area inside the boundaries is visible on a standard television screen.+
The reference to Crop Area deals with the ratio of the image dimensions. The TV safe area is best described by the section in Bold above.

  • Bring back the crop area!

The addition of artboards is throwing us for a loop. We just need a crop area to keep any art/stray points out of our final exported jpgs. We don't want automatically appended file name changes! We don't want to waste time batch renaming or manually deleting file name changes, we just want a simple crop. Can't there be both?!
