Stuck in Clean Slate, no other applications or dock available

So to tell all that happened. I was working on the computer and was having a hard time downloading a purchase on Itunes. It kept saying that disk was full etc. I asked to restart my computer (not shut down). When I did this it took forever to start back up as it had the bar across the bottom the screen like it was updating something (not sure what). When I got to the log in user, I logged in as normal.
I then got a pop up that said a program I was using was having a problem and if I like to restart new or fresh (something to that wording). My choices were cancle or ok. I hit ok, thinking that it had to do with itunes.
I then got a grey screen which opened to Clean Slate. It took awhile but I got out of clean slate. Now there is no Doc availble with my applications. Itunes won't open.  In the upper right hand corner all that shows are the clean slate app. a bowler hat and something else that refers to windows.  There is no date and time and doesn't show battery power icon or wifi.
In the left hand corner is the apple icon, and if I go to Recent items it shows everything I had before the restart. There is no dock at the bottom.
I went to prefrences and tried to set up everything how it was, but nothing will save. It shows internet connectivity but won't open a page (such as gmail) when I am on an internet browser.
I feel like I am in some other start up or something. Did I lose everything. What do I do?

The bar across the bottom, or near the bottom, of the screen when booting means the system is booting into Safe Mode.
It would seem your hard drive is Over Filled and you need to free up some space by either moving files to an external drive or just Deleting some, many.
As to your reference of Clean Slate I have no idea what that is. Never saw it on my Mac, did a google search and turned up a lot of thing called Clean Slate but nothing for Mac popped out at me.

  • Clean slate with a new Mac

I am in the process of purchasing a new Mac. My existing Mac is an early 2009 MacBook Pro and contains files dating back prior to OS 9 (maybe even back to OS 6). I wish to start with a clean slate with the new Mac and don’t plan on migrating files from the old computer. However, I would like to bring over my Contacts, Calendar and Mail (Accounts only, no mail history). How would I go about doing that?

Replace any Contacts, Calendar, and Mail folders with those from your old computer. Transfer the folders and also the preference files. These latter are located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. If your Library folder isn't visible then:
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.
The Mail and Calendar folders are in the /Home/Library/ folder while Contacts is in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder, but it is called AddressBook.

  • My macbook is loaded with microsoft work and every time I try and open the program I get an error reading and it will not open.  Powerpoint and the other applications still respond!

my macbook is loaded with microsoft word for macs and every time I try and open the program I get an error reading and it will not open. This is what it says:
The application Microsof Word quit eunexpectedly.  Powerpoint and the other applications still respond!

    The joys of Microsoft!
Maybe the preferences file is corrupted.  You should be able to find the Word preferences file in the folder:
    your user name/Library/Preferences
    Its name is com.microsoft.Word.plist
I suggest you drag this another folder and try Word again.
If that doesn't work then you might find clearing the cache files will fix the problem.  You can do this manually but I never bother. Instead I use a program like Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner (shareware) or Onyx (free). These programs do lots of other maintenance jobs so it's worth having at least one of them.

  • Firefox won't play sound on youtube video's but sound works in other applications

i can play sound as usual on other applications such as media player, vlc, itunes etc... but firefox and internet explorer do not work, google chrome doesnt even work. i have re-downloaded flash player and the pluggins many times trying to fix it, cleaned out my pc with ccleaner, anti-virus checked and such. i just cant fix it. i have before but i forget how and it always happens again after a while, especially just after pulling out speakers or headphones from the jack.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== it just keeps happening, has been for months and months

Try clearing the Cache in Firefox.
    Tools-> Clear Recent History -> [v] Cache
    or
    Tools->Options->Advanced->Network -> Offline storage -> [Clear Now]
Youtube may have made some changes recently. Clear the Youtube cookie and refresh page if above does not do it.

  • Went to "setting" deleted data from "music" to make more space (I don't use iCloud). When I open "Music", the list is still there but there is no content/the actual songs.  How can it back to a clean slate? "Setting" shows "Music" has no data.

Wanted to change my playlists and music, so went to >settings>music>delete data.  So now, within the usage menu, the "music" shows "no data".  But, when I open the Music app, it still shows the list of music that was supposedly deleted.  And the weird thing is, it is only the list. There is no content.  No actual music.  How do I get rid of this lists and get it to a clean slate???

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

  • TIP: Clean slate for find/change

    Hi,
Sharing a little tip I just thought of. Very straightforward and
obvious, but quite useful, and I haven't noticed it mentioned elsewhere.
If you're doing a lot of find/replace, you'll repeatedly need to remove
all selections and start with a clean slate (nothing in the find/replace
    fields, clear all formatting).
It seemed to me for a while that we're missing a "Clear All" button in
    the find/replace box.
So the answer is simple: clear everything, all options, etc., and save
    it as a find/replace query.
Now whenever you need a clean slate for find/save, just select that query.
    It's working nicely for me!
    Happy new year,
    Ariel

I was going to stay out of this, but find I can't. Sometimes it seems to me that scripters see everything as being better solved through scripting.
I actually think Ariel's observation about saving a blank query is quite brilliant, and I have to agree that there are times, and plenty of users like me who don't use a KB hortcut to access find change, where users will find having the saved blank query much faster than any other method of clearing the dialog. Both methods have their place, but I find it disingenuous to say that Jongware's scriptlet "solves" the case where you want to keep the old values -- it actually complicates things as you then must remember if you are to run the KB shortcut, or use the menu, to acieve the desired result.
I think it would be far better to say that this, like many things in ID, can be accomplished in more than one way, and that they way you do it may be different at different times, and that the mehod of choice is exactly that, a choice subject to the user's own preference.

  • How can I clean up my "Other" Storage?!!!

I have used OmniDiskSweeper, Disk Inventory X, Disk Doctor, etc! It helps clean up storage that I can see but cannot find what is taking up 65GB of Other storage!! PLEASE HELP!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning your files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Firefox v33 knocked out my Adobe 7 pro PDF printer plugin. PDFs print OK from other applications.

Firefox v33 knocked out my Adobe 7 pro PDF printer plugin. PDFs print OK from other applications. It happened a few times randomly, and it seemed to resolve spontaneously, but now it is persistent.
I've done scans for malware, which I suspected, but nothing showed up, nor corrected it with cleaning.
I had this problem before, and I found directions on how to rest the printer within Firefox, but I've forgotten how or where I got it.
I did try to re-install in control panel, but this appears to be a firefox issue. How do i rest the plugin or Firefox to once again print PDFs from browser pages. I need to use this feature printing receipts etc.

Are you using a toolbar button (Create PDF extension) or a printer driver (selecting Adobe PDF or Distiller in the Print dialog) to generate the PDF? Older versions of Create PDF have been reported not to work any more (by older I mean from Acrobat X or earlier), but the printing method should still work.

Just got the new iMac. The screen keeps jumping to the launch pad screen randomly when I am working in other applications.
I have the magic mouse, don't know whether it is something to do with that? Any ideas?

If gumsie's suggestion isn't the answer, try logging into another account, like Guest, and see if you get the same behavior. You may need to clean the windows on the bottom of the mouse.

  • Clean Slate with MYSQL

Okay, my configuration with MYSQL is completely borked.  How do I wipe out MYSQL's configuration, databases, etc, to get a clean slate without reinstalling my entire system?

Try removing /etc/my.conf (if you messed with it at all) and /var/lib/mysql. Then reinstall mysql and that should give you a clean start.
    Good luck!

  • Clean Slate Donations?

HI there. I am donating my 4 imacs and ibooks to my son's school, but i need to do a clean slate on the hard drives and bring them back to factory settings. How do I do this? Most are updates to 10.4.8....please advise!
    Thanks!

yes, i have the original software, but they are super old, like 10.1 and 10.2. The computers are all up to date with software updates, so to go back that far would be icky. Here's what I have done on my ibook g4, I went to the user/accounts icon on the system preferences, change the name and the password to my kids teacher's and made sure that my network preferences and imac preferences were cleared out too. Then open your hard drive off the desktop and find the Users folder in it. Open Users and rename the house icon making sure the house icon with all your personal info in it is clear if not start the process of deleting the files thru my trash can, the secured way.
    Good luck

  • Can you reload iCal and get a clean slate?

Since no one seems to know how to solve the problem of the dissapearing "to do's",(see topic: iCal "TO Do's" have stopped working properly.), is there a way to reload iCal and start over with a clean slate? I tried reloading OS 10.4.8 but iCal picked up all my old calendar entries. I'm hoping that if I can get a clean start maybe this problem might go away.

  • How clean unused / not installed applications from SCCM

    Hi all,
Again I need your help guys. I hope you will help me with this "simple" task. :-)
I have found in our SCCM infrastructure, we have a lot of applications. I sure, many of this is not used anymore. It will be smart to clean SCCM from unused applications. And now question: SCCM has bulit-in report, which I can use to get list of all applications
which are not used / installed on users devices? I have checked maaaaaaany of reports in SCCM but I can't find it.
    Thank you for any suggestion.

Asset Intelligence also tracks some software usage, but I am not sure how accurate or useful the data is.

how do i engage my 8 core mac pro to use all it's cores when using final cut pro and other applications that need processing power? at the moment they seem to be idle...

First, did you use Setup or Migration Assistant? That can happen when coming from a PowerMac or sometimes even from another (Intel) Mac.
Second, wait for the next version of Final Cut due very soon to ship (may have to wait for the ".1" of course to clean up any early issues.
