Student paper.

I have to write a paper on the the GUI interface for Java and was wondering if anyone has an opinion on this. The paper has to make a case for using the GUI interface of Java. Why not just use the built in features of Microsoft Windows products or Apple Mac or Gnome or KDE or X in the Unix/Linux world? In other words, why would we want to use Java GUI?
This is not doing my homework for me, I was just wanting ideas. :0)

This may not help with your comparison with other products, but here's a link I found on Java's Pros and Cons that might be useful.

  • Designing a college paper

    Hello there,
I'm planning to launch a student-run college newspaper in September. The college bought InDesign so that I can design the layout of the paper.
But I never used the software before (I'm only using Photoshop on my personal desktop), so I'm in front my screen telling me "What now?"
How to design a college paper, with an elegant, not-too-serious, but not-amateur layout? Where to begin? How may it look professionnal?
This paper will be a way to give life to the collge, and allow students to express themselves.
    Thanks in advance!

You've got two different learning tasks in front of you -- mastering InDesign and learing about newspaper layout.
We have a bunch of newspaper folk among our regulars here, so I hope they'll chime in, too. The journalism classes at the school where I advise the student paper use this text, I believe, to teach basic newspaper design and layout concepts: http://www.amazon.com/The-Newspaper-Designers-Handbook-Harrower/dp/0072996692/ref=sr_1_4?s =books&ie=UTF8&qid=1338735084&sr=1-4#reader_0072996692
For learing InDesign itself, the most commonly recommended book on this forum is Sandee Cohen' Visual QuickStart Guide: http://www.amazon.com/InDesign-CS5-Macintosh-Windows-QuickStart/dp/0321705203/ref=sr_1_1?s =books&ie=UTF8&qid=1338735856&sr=1-1 for the CS5 edition, or preorder the CS6 edition due at the end of June: http://www.amazon.com/InDesign-CS5-Macintosh-Windows-QuickStart/dp/0321705203/ref=sr_1_1?s =books&ie=UTF8&qid=1338735856&sr=1-1
If you prefer video training, you can't do better than Lynda.com, which is not free, but there is also a ton of stuff on Adobe TV which is.

  • Indesign to PDF issues

    HI,
I have created a 310 page book using Indesign CS5. Now that the book is complete, I need to export it to PDF for printing. I have been working on this for about a week and I have tried to export the book at least 20 times, and only once did it work (when it did work, I noticed some errors so I had to fix them and re-export). I am using mac OS 10.6.8. I have read many of the posts about this issue. I have added the txt file to ensure that indesign exports in the foreground "DisableAsyncExports.txt". Which helped me figure out the problem page. I also downloaded the adobe patch 7.0.3. I remade the page and it will export if I export to the end of the book starting on page 220 (the offending page is 228), but when I start from page one, it fails at page 228. I've remade the page three times, but I don't know what is wrong with it. There is no text on the page, just 12 pictures, 4 are .jpg and the remaining 8 are .psd (the background has been removed from the pictures). The 8 psd files are on angles. Any suggestions would be greatly apprecited.

Is your production workflow for the newspaper? I advise a student paper, and we also send single pages, but I think
Our production workflow, for a newspaper, has seperate InDesign files for each content section (not physical section) of the newspaper, because that lets those multiple sections be worked on in parallel. So a "section" in this context can have between 1 and 12 pages in it. In our format (tabloid), we're imposed 4 tabloid sheets to each plate. I can't quiet fathom how you could use a single page per InDesign file though -- how do you do jumps?
Very painfully by copy/paste and careful checking when something gets edited. It's far from ideal, but it's a weekly, not a daily, so we have a bit more time, and the staff is small (as is the paper -- usually 4 or 8 pages, never more than 16 in my years with the group). We need the flexibility to allow each page to be worked on by a different user both to get the last minute rush done and to allow as many people as possible to participate in production if they choose to do it -- the paper is technically a school club, but participation is required of journalism students, and the professor has been pushing for the kids to learn production as well as writing skills.

  • Redirect Document Recovery using registry setting or Group Policy

Hi all, I am deploying In Design CS5.5 (version 7.5) on several Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Citrix servers. The users login to the server and use the server desktop to run applications. For many apps we have used redirection for cache folders etc to try and keep the user's windows profile as small as possible. When an application uses the registry to store its file paths then this can easily be done with group policy, I haven't been able to find any key for In Design that holds the Document Recovery path or any other cache type paths.
Does anyone know where this path is stored?
Any recommendations for methods on redirecting adobe paths out of the user's profile?
    All help appreciated !
    Nick.

The path to the recovery folder is stored as part of the User's application preferences in InDesign Defaults, I believe. There is  Browse button under FIle Hnadling that lets the user choose the location for the folder.
I don't know if it will help you, but I maintain a group of workstations for the student paper at the local community college, all of which have DeepFreeze installed making a local recovery folder useless, so I set the folder on one machine to a network drive, then cloned the prefs to the other workstations. Seems to work great.

  • InDesign - Export PDF file size

Hey everyone. I use InDesign to create my resume for job apps and whatnot. I've found that many corporate sites only accept file sizes under a certain limit (usually 500kb or smaller). My resume is usually around 590-610kb. Is there any way that I can reduce the file size without losing significant quality, or even any?
    Cheers.

So I need to d/l adobe acrobat?
OK, so this sounds like you don't have a Creative Suite package, or perhaps you are using Creative Cloud and didn't install Acrobat Pro.
The free Adobe Reader will not help you to optimize a PDF, you need the full, paid, Acrobat application. Uwe's suggestion to distill might get you a smaller PDF, but again, without Acrobat you won't have Distiller. There are a few freeware Distiller clones that would probably work for plain text, but I doubt there's much that can be done to bring the size down on a file that has nothing but text in it without removing the non-graphic disposables like metadata, and the embedded page thumbnails, which requires the optimizer.
It occurs to me that one reason your exported PDF might be large is that ID always embeds fonts unless they are restricted. If you are using common system fonts that you know your viewer will have, you can distill PDF without embedding fonts and save a couple of bytes. I just pulled up a random page from a student paper, which has about seven fonts in use. The usage audit says they total a bit over 2mb.

  • Update requires a valid UpdateCommand when passed DataRow collection with modified rows.

    It is my
understanding that when using a TableAdapter and selecting the proper
options, Insert, Delete and Update statements are generated. The
Update statement should work just using the following:
    myTableAdapter.Update(changes);
Where changes is the DataSet containing the modified data.
This logic works great for one of the tables in the DB but not for another.
Learning this new stuff is Confusing at best - Frustrating at worst.
    Help appreciated,

  • Combining InDesign Documents

Hi all! I am the editor-in-chief for my high school's newspaper, and we consistently encounter a big problem when combining InDesign documents to be sent to the printer. When we add pages from one InDesign document to another, all of the spacing that we worked tirelessly on has been ignored and replaced with some automatic spacing that InDesign does. I have tried giving the documents the same Paragraph Styles, and make sure to have All Information checked under preferences. However, neither of these things have worked. Please let me know if you had this problem and diagnosed it. Thanks a ton---
    Lilia

Your moving problem is probably related to either differences in master pages or styles. When you move a page, if the destination document uses the same names for things, the definitions inthe destination are used and you can have this sort of change.
I'm the production advisor for the student paper at my local community college, so I've got a lot of experience with the sort of thing you are doing. The very first thing I would tell you to do is to create a template file with you master pages and styles from which all pages will be built. That's how you maintain consistency.
At our paper we almost never work with more than a single page per document, which is a real pain for jumps, but it allows multiple users to be editing pages at the same time, and I suspect you are in the same situation, and you're trying to combine pages when the issue is complete. As Migintosh says, there's no reason to do that if you use PDF to send to your printer. We don't even need to combine the pages into a single PDF for them (though you should check with your printer to see if that's acceptable) since we never go over 8 pages and it's not a chore for them to manually impose.

  • How do you turn off select whole word function?

Massively annoying, trying to start an edit on a student paper, say, by selecting part of a word or just the period at the end of a sentence but then having to re-write the whole word, add punctuation back in, and then do your editing.  We've been doing this for a long time, now.  Computers are supposed to save people time, not create more work for them.

You know that label at the top that says
Adobe Community > Acrobat > Collaboration & Commenting > Discussions
and where I say I'm trying to select part of a word, so obviously with a select tool?
    Any other questions?

  • I have the opposite problem with my gmail account.  It never shows unread email.  I had a student say she sent a paper to my email account; it never showed as unread.  When I opened the gmail, there it was.  I have checked all settings.

I am using OS X.9.3.  I have tried everything and nothing seems to work.  I am concerned that I will miss a student email/

Log into your Gmail account from a browser on your computer.  Delete or move the email(s) with the large photo attachments.  Try to clean up any other emails by moving out as many as you can from the inbox to other folders.  Delete any unnecessary emails/empty trash.  Once you've done that, try to open the Gmail app again.  If still no go, delete the Gmail app & then redownload it from the app store.  Now sign back in to see if the issue is fixed.
    Hope this helps!

  • How do I purchase multiple copies of the same title for my class of students to download?

I need to purchase 60+ copies of the same title to use in my classroom. Normally my school purchases paperback copies of books, but now that I all of my students have iPads, I would like to purchase the eBook and then have them download it. Any ideas on how best to do this?

    What version of iPhoto?
The general process is to select the photo and print, select the printer, paper size and print size and click customize and under settings selec multiples copies of a photo (the preview will reflect this choice) and click print to print, make any printer specific selections and click print to print

  • How to legally buy US TV show to send to student overseas?

This is your oddball question for the day. I am in the USA. My daughter attends an international program at a university in far northern Germany, and it's master's thesis time. The prof assigns the thesis topics to the students. They have no choice on their topic, as I understand it, and I'm getting the feeling he relishes making it as hard for the international kids as he can.
Her Finnish friend has been assigned to write her thesis on the philosophy of some American TV show called The Bridge. It is not available on DVD yet, and no release date given, however, it is available on both Amazon and Itunes. Amazon's CSR says she can't download it from an overseas ISP because it's only licensed in the USA. I'm assuming it's likewise for Itunes.
It's my understanding that if I download a show, and make a copy or a backup to send to her, that she must have my original Amazon or Itunes password to access it, even on a DVD, and I'm not real thrilled about sharing that with some kid I don't even know. But she's in a pickle.
I thought of buying her a used Ipod Touch, creating a new iTunes or Amazon account, downloading it here, and shipping it to her there, but this seems awfully convoluted. Does anyone have a creative, legal suggestion? This student has little to no budget to work with, and I'd like to help her out, since she has no contacts in the US, other than her best friend's mom (me).
Same prof assigned my daughter a thesis topic on books that are so rare and HTF we are scrambling to find them in any country. But at least they're BOOKS! Good old paper books do still have their advantages, it seems.
Any advice appreciated. I'm quite sure there's ways to do this piratically, but I'd like to keep her on the legal side of things, since I assume she may have to show documentation or source material to her professor at some point.

Google on dvr to Mac. I just did; it shows, for one thing, that different software may be needed depending on the provider. Many reads showed up after doing the Goobgle.

    Hi J D,
    Welcome to Sony Community!
Unfortunately, Information about educational research or reports cannot be provided online. I would recommend the book "MADE IN JAPAN," written by Akio Morita (our founder) as an excellent resource for both the history of Sony and our products. You may also want to visit the following website for a detailed presentation of the company history:

  • In need of a Powershell script to move students from an OU to another OU

    Good Day Everyone,
I was tasked to move students from the Students OU to Full Time / Part Time OU. I can possibly get this done in a short time BUT since I am a newbie, I would like to know what would be the best approach for me to get this done.
    Details
    1. There are about 1700 students
    2. Import Students from an CSV file to be moved [fulltimestudents.csv AND parttimestudents.csv]
    3. After importing the students > move them to the fulltime or parttime OU
Any suggestions before I start this and thank you all for your help.

  • Elements 9 saves images as torn paper

       Dear Friends,
I am helping a student who is running Elements 9 on Windows 7.  When she opens an image from the Organizer into the Full Editor and creates an adjustment layer, she then saves this image as a Photoshop document.  When she does this, the image appears in the organizer as a torn piece of paper and the window has a question mark warning.
If she moves this image back to the Editor, it reopens correctly.  It appears that she cannot save as a photoshop document with layers without this happening.
If she flattens the image and saves it as a jpeg, it appears with a thumbnail in the Organizer.
This has just started happening in the last 2 days.  These images have only been downloaded from her camera directly to a folder in Pictures.  She has not opened them before in any other software.
In addition, the folder that these images came from is no longer visible in Pictures.
    Any thoughts?
    Mary Lou

Try right clicking on image and then Update Thumbnail. If this doesn't help it could be that the image location was moved outside of PSE and now PSE doesn't know where it is. You should only move an image location from within PSE with the Move command.
