Subject line on discussion forums.

When using my phone to post on boards like this.  It tells me I have to enter something in the subject line and won't let me post.
Even if there is something posted in the subject line it still thinks its blank.

What browser are you using?
I have not have this happen with IE 8 yet.

  • Option to change a Subject Line in a Forum question

    Hello,
    In Forums, many times I see that people create duplicate questions because after posting a question and getting some responses, they realize that the Subject Line is not descriptive enough .
    e.g
    /thread/1520926 [original link is broken]
    /thread/1519271 [original link is broken]
    I personally feel that if we provide an option to a question's owner to change the subject line at any point of time( even after many replies)  if needed, it could avoid some duplications in questions.
    (Let me know if its already there and I dint know about this feature
    Regards,
    Pooja Pandey

    Hi Pooja,
    You can change the title and the post itself, but you need to realize the mistake.
    If I remember correctly, you have 15 minutes time for this.
    There were some strategists in the past who posted "place holders" or went back and edited their posts once someone had provided a better solution. This is not main the intention of the forums and sharing you knowledge at the time of posting.
    My recommendation is to do a quick check on the OP before answering by checking their recent posts via the user profile, and if you find the question interesting but are not sure about aspects of it, then don't rush in but take your time to work it out.
    A respectfull OP should appreciate this, and the quality of the discussion around the solution.
    Personally, I have also learnt very valuable skills from SDN when someone stepped in to say "Sorry Julius, but that is a legacy approach and you can now use XYZ..." or "That is bad advise, because you have not considered ABC.." etc.
    Such discussions are worth gold to everyone, and there is nothing wrong with making "innocent" mistakes.
    My 2 cents of thinking before posting,
    Julius

  • Special Character in Subject Field of Discussion Forum

    I am creating a new discussion, in the subject when i enter "Portal Discussion?" then it gives error that special character is not allowed. But i want to use the "?" in the subject at the time of creation.
    After creating the discussion i can edit the same thing with special characters, then why SharePoint is not allowing to enter special character at the time of creation.

    Hi
    Refer this link
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/6e7a7eae-26fc-467f-bfdc-7c5d5ff49a95/discussion-forum-storing-special-character-in-title-differently?forum=sharepointdevelopmentlegacy
    It seems that SharePoint will allow the Title of the discussion board to remain with the special characters, but the actual URL will not be allowed and will strip them from the final URL.  SharePoint Manager easily shows this, btw.
    So, there are probably many different ways to get what you are looking for, but one way could be to have a Linq query look for all Discussion Boards on a given site and then return the Title and the DefaultViewUrl, which the latter could then be prefixed by
    the SPWeb.Url to give you something like "Testing? , /" for the title and http://mysite/Lists/Testing/AllItems.aspx (assuming
    that is the actual default view) which you could then use as the final URL for your hyperlink in your web part.
    In the code snippet below you can see the Linq query (which I assumed from your post that you need to query to find the Discussion Boards) and a simple DataTable that you could then use to populate a repeater or you just omit the DataTable and
    enumerate the results from the query yourself:
    var linqResults
    = from list in oSPWeb.Lists.Cast<SPList>() where list.BaseTemplate
    == SPListTemplateType.DiscussionBoardselect list;
    DataTable oDataTable
    = new DataTable();
    DataColumn oDataColumn_Title
    = new DataColumn("Title", typeof(string));
    oDataTable.Columns.Add(oDataColumn_Title);
    DataColumn oDataColumn_URL
    = new DataColumn("URL", typeof(string));
    oDataTable.Columns.Add(oDataColumn_URL);
    foreach (SPList oSPList in linqResults)
    DataRow oDataRow
    = oDataTable.NewRow();
    oDataRow[
    "Title"]
    = oSPList.Title.ToString();
    oDataRow[
    "URL"]
    = oSPWeb.Url + oSPList.DefaultViewUrl.ToString();
    oDataTable.Rows.Add(oDataRow);
    oDataTable.AcceptChanges();

  • String "iso-8859-1" found in subject line of java mail API(when German char

    We have written a mail client using java mail API and it works fine. Some body sends the email with subject line contains German chars(using some other mail client like outlook)
    and our mail client is running on the machine whose Local has been set 'German'.
    Now, while getting the subject line
    Javax.mail.Message email; //local variable
    // some how I am intializing email.
    String str = email.getSubject();
    the value of str returns "Bitte die 4 Items Ischen. Kein Bedarf. Ich kann die=?iso-8859-1?Q?_L=F6schung_nic?="
    but actual value subject line was "Bitte die 4 Items Ischen. Kein Bedarf. Ich kann die Lschung nic"
    So '' char was repalced by some arbit chars.
    Moreover, Charset.defaultCharset().name() returns 'windows-1252'
    Please suggest me how I can get the actual subject line

  • Discussions Update Subject Line

    1) I finally started noticing that Mail.app wasn't threading or clustering groups of those automatic email 'forum update reminder' messages as it had done before. It would usually not highlight any others or, at most, perhaps one or two.
    2) At first I thought that it was a Mail.app problem, but quickly determined that it was caused by differences in the Subject: line. The headers now end with a
    " ... has been updated by USER." trailer and, of course, this makes each users update notice a separate messae.
    3) This seems silly and unnecessary. At that level I don't care who is doing the updating (well, sometimes I might but usually not) and, in any case, the subject line is so long that the end of it isn't visible in the reader at the time I click on that message. In the meantime, it destroy's the email reader's ability to display all of the messages on the same topic.
    4) The fix is easy; drop that personalization off of the end.
    This is also a test transmission to see if actual Discussions comments and suggestions can make it through the cloud of iPod and other unrelated queries.

    Hi,
    More details about your discussions forum will make others easier to find a corresponding solution on your requirement.
    If you mean there are three Discussion Board list waiting for synchronizing, I would suggest you create an Event Receiver for the three Discussion Board list.
    Here is a link with code demo about how to copy items from one Discussion Board to another including Replies:
    http://spcodes.blogspot.com/2013/03/programmatically-copy-items-from-one.html
    Here is a step by step sample on creating a simple Item added event receiver for Custom List in SharePoint 2010:

  • Sharepoint 2013 Discussion Board Web Part, Subject line link on Home Page does not link to the list view

    I am by no means a SharePoint developer, but I really wanted to customize the discussion board for my site - so I found this link: http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/733164/How-to-create-HelpDesk-on-SharePoint-Online
    I added the columns, like the article said, and then completed the section "Modification of the discussion board views".  I skipped the workflow stuff because while I think it would be useful I wanted to make sure I could get
    the actual customization of the discussion board to work first.
    My Problem (Just to preface - I followed the above instructions, including disabling the Minimal Download Strategy):
    When I clicked into my discussion board list, I was able to get it to look and function as described for both the subject and flat views. However, when I click on the Subject, from the Discussion Board Web Part on my Home Page, it does not redirect into the
    Discussion Board List Flat View.  Instead, it tries to open the root folder from the Home Page while still using the subject view.  The outcome being an empty discussion board on the Home Page.
    So I decided to create a whole new discussion board to see if that one would work, when I inserted a new Discussion Board Web Part into the Home Page, newly created from the app menu, it used the same custom JS file(plumTickets), even though I never linked
    the discussion board to the JS file. Of course when I went into the newly created Discussion Board list it opened as it does OOTB.
    I am so close it having this work like I have been envisioning.  I just need users to be able to click on a discussion subject from the Home Page and be redirected to the list view of the parent folder (I think that is the correct terminology,
    but it may not be) so they would be able to see any replies and be able to reply.  Please Help Me!!!
    I truly appreciate any help you are able to provide, thank you!

    I figured it out. I was using ?FilterField1=fieldname&FilterValue1=value on the URL to the page to pick out one project number. The web part I was trying to add was for a list that did not have that particular fieldname. I didn't realize that would matter
    since I was using the Connections -> Get Filter Values From to get my filter values from the main web part, which does have that fieldname.
    I added a field with that fieldname to the other list and set a workflow to copy the lookup value of the project number lookup field into the new field. Now all is working fine.  Sorry for the wild geese in my original question.

  • How to make announcements in packaged application On Line Discussion Forum?

    Hi,
    After logging as ADMIN I have posted a thread and selected the radio button Announcement.
    But the thread seems to behave as a normal thread, not as an announcement.
    Have I missed something ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Leo

    I think I've found a couple small bugs in the Discussion Forum application.
    You can't post a new message or a reply from the preview pages (26 and 28).
    The value 'test' is hardcoded in the insert statement in the position of a numeric column.
    Is this application going to be moved back to SourceForge? It looks easy to fix.

  • How to insert field from form into subject line of email

    I have a form:
    http://www.mcw.edu/FileLibrary/Groups/HMGC/Forms/HIPAAForms/HumanSequencingTertiaryAnalysi .pdf
    and I would like to have the name of the person fill in automatically in the subject line.  Right now when the email button is clicked the subject line reads: "Submitted Human Sequencing Tertiary Analysis Submission Form."  Once the form is filled out, I would like the subject line to read: "[PI-Name] - Submitted Human Sequencing Tertiary Analysis Submission Form,"  (as highlighted below)
    event.target.submitForm({cURL:"mailto:?subject=[PI-Name] - Submitted Human Sequencing Tertiary Analysis Submission Form&body=Please find attached the completed Human Sequencing Tertiary Analysis Submission Form.",cSubmitAs:"PDF",cCharset:"utf-8"});
    I read the other discussion on this, but it didn't seem to pertain to me, or I just couldn't figure it out.  Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks, Anne

    Hi Anne,
    This has come up several times on the forum. Most recently here, with links to examples and descriptions as to how it works: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4183125#4183125.

  • Email update notifications subject line could be a *lot* more useful.

    I only started using the discussions forums a while ago (although I read quite a few Apple Mailing lists).
    I am registered to receive notifications for a few forums. These typically have a subject line like this:
    ===
    Apple Discussions forum "Some Forum" has been updated by Some User
    ===
    and a line in the body that reads:
    ===
    You have requested mail to be sent to you when messages to the Apple Discussions forum "Some Forum" are posted. Some User posted "Some Topic" on May 25, 2006 11:20:09 PM.
    ===
    It would be much nicer and more convenient if the subject line of these mail also contained the topic name, so that I can weed out those that I'm not interested in without actually opening the message, and also so that I can recognise which messages are going to direct to me to the same topic.
    For example:
    ===
    "Some Topic" in Apple Discussions "Some Forum" has been updated by Some User
    ===
    Even the thread id would be useful, if the length of the subject line is a concern.
    This should be pretty easy, as the information is clearly available when the mail is constructed.
    cheers,
    Martin

    Hi Martin
    that's odd, since my notification emails come with a subjecy header like
    Topic "Movies/Flash" in the Apple Discussions forum "Safari" has been updated by someone
    iMac G5 rev B   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2GB 250GB

  • Subject line removed by poster (was ---)

    removed. fixed

    Meant to say just ditching the Apple discussions forum tag line at begining of subject line and just strictly use the subject .....
    What I meant and what I wrote originally sounds a lot different. sorry .

  • How can we extend the subject line using SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_ATT_SEND_API1??

    Hi,
    I am triggering a mail using the function module SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_ATT_SEND_API1, where in the subject of the mail is passed using the DOC_CHNG-OBJ_DESCR, here the object_descr can only accomadate 50 characters.
    But requirement is to have more than 50 characters may be 100 to 150 in the subject line.Please help me to extend.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Searched in the forum for the above requirement but didnt find the required info..
    Please help me in finding a solution to this
    Thanks in advance

  • Slow to a crawl in the Discussions Forum

    Today has been maddeningly slow . It was taking a few minutes to just open a subject , a couple times I timed out and/or the site appeared to actually go down . I am finding it strange that I don't see much mention of this . At first I thought it was my eMac but the Powerbook was also slow and when I tried the PC , it to was slow . This is just in the Apple Discussions Forum everything else is fine so it's not AT&T
    A search for "slow" showed up some problems in Nov. that were blamed on "code tweaking" so I assume this may be the same problem . Is there someplace that tells about current issues or problems ? Ebay mentions in advance when they will be doing maintenance .

    Hi Kady
    Thank you for the info . I thought it was my computer because I was having other troubles .
    Was it memory leaks ? It would be nice if something could be posted when things slow down. Hear is some info I found ;
    Well, I’m sure you guys and gals know this already, but spend half an hour on the Apple discussion boards at http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@ , preferably accessing things like “my posts” or other search related activity and you will very soon find some nasty memory leaks.
    Most people find that the ‘Real RAM” consumption of Safari goes up from a a few megabytes to over 200MB within 20 minutes or so., at which time very nasty slowdowns occur (40 secs to a minute to open a link on the pages, despite my 1500 ADSL link and an iMac G5 2 GHz with 2 gig of RAM. The problem causes these slowdowns even when I have more than a Gig of RAM completely free.)
    A number of Apple Discussion Board Level 4’s have been discussing this problem and reporting exactly the same experience. We have been wondering whether to blame you, Apple , Javascript, or Web Crossing. Many people who use this board regularly are simply shifting to other browsers to avoid the problem.
    The leak can be overcome to a large extent by disabling javascript, but this is a very annoying way to have to deal with the issue. Spend half an hour on these boards and I’m sure you will soon get some relevant information!
    Cheers
    Rod

  • RANT: Please post with a meaningful subject line

    This is an SQL and PL/SQL forum. Almost all posts will be people needing help with a query, or in a PL/SQL procedure, so subject lines like
    Stored Procedure
    Please share your valuable experience
    Need help on the below query
    error while running PL/SQL
    Query
    Help need in this query
    PL/SQL
    Query - Help
    Help
    are essentially meaningless (those just in the last few hours).
    If you're getting an error, put the error in the subject line.
    If your query is slow, first read When your query takes too long ... and if that doesn't help then post with something in the subject line to indicate it's a performance related question.
    If it's a "how to" question, use that e.g "how to calculate a rolling average".
    Oh, and if your question is how to find the second highest salary in the department, don't bother posting at all.
    Just a pet peeve brought to a head by this morning's threads.

    Agree and disagree with your comments APC.
    Yes, the clueless and unwashed will not even bother reading this posting - just as they will not be bothered by using a totally meaningless subject for their posting.
    But, I do not think we should simply 'let it be' (only John/Paul made that work and in a song). The forum is what we, the members, make from it.
    I think my continual rants on using "urgent" for a subject header have made a difference and many "got the point". So I do not see Dave's rant as pointless - simply addressed at the wrong audience. He should instead post a small rant to an applicable posting and "spread the message" that way.
    As for what we choose to read and not read.. some of us are here because we want to help. And a poster with a meaningless subject has a lessor change of getting his/her posting read by those who want to help.. as it is simply a nameless problem amongst other nameless problems.

  • Saving Outlook eMail to a hard drive folder with long subject lines

    I'm using Outlook 2010 on a WIN7 machine. I drag and drop eMails to folders on my desktop quite often and in the past (earlier version
    of Outlook) I would receive a warning that the file did not copy if the subject line was too long. When I drag and drop eMails with long subject lines now there is no visual warning or indication that the operation failed. I am aware of the file name/path
    character count limitation. My issue is the lack of a warning when the operation fails requiring me to have to check the length of the subject line before the operation or double check if the file is present after the operation. Checking after the operation
    is quite exacerbating when you are copying 15 - 20 files at a time. Is there a patch or something that can be done about this?
