Sudo chown + chmod on system drive?

Hello,
Before I mess my system drive up I wanted to check if this is ok.
For various reasons I have created a new Account that I wish to migrate to. I log in ok and can change permissions but there seem to be files on various places that I keep having to set permissions for and wish to resolve this for the whole drive.
What I want is a way to set permissions on all non system files to add admin access as it appears it is not there for certain files
I found the below commands which worked on my media drive but am reluctant to run it on the system drive:
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/System
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/System
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/System
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/System
I think the one above should have the "R" in as below to do this recursivly ?
sudo chmod -RN /Volumes/System
I don't want to mess up the system drive so I thought I should check if this is ok or not. I think some system files need to be read only so I need to know if this will render the drive useless(I do have a full backup).
I also see people recomend Batchmod but am again unsure if this will work or what settings to use?

Thanks Niel,
I have read numorous posts from yourself and V.K. relating to locked secondary drives but nothing relating to system drives and fully expected that answer. can I bother you a bit more please?
Can I safly run those commands on some of these folders?
system\users\olduseraccount
System\library\application support
System\library\audio
I think that would solve most issues there are hundreds of folders with presets from plugins that have installed with only my old account as read write not admins?
Thanks again Niel

I need to repair the default permissions....but disk utility already said i cannot repair the disk due to this error:
the underlying task reported failure on exit
already tried to repair using the install dvd too.
found on the web this procedure:
Boot off the OS X CD (reboot, hold C while booting).
The installer will load up, go to Utilities in the menu and run Terminal.
Type df and look for the drive that has your Mac system mounted---you'll have to unmount this. On my MacBook Pro, it was /dev/disk0s2.
Type umount /dev/disk0s2, replacing disk0s2 with whatever disk your OS lives on.
Type fsck_hfs -r /dev/disk0s2. If you umounted the wrong thing, it will complain that you can't repair a mounted drive. Go back and umount the right thing and repeat this step.
(they forgot to add the step to re-mount...but its ok..)
    and this one:
Single user mode (boot with -s) and then type
    fsck_hfs -r /dev/volumename
will any of those save me from a archive and install?
HELP!! Those warnings cannot be good... but the system is booting and working fine till now.

Oh come on, it isn't exactly rocket science. Compare actual permissions to expected permissions and correct discrepancies, while making allowances for a few special cases. The 'chmod -R' command does {sic} move or alter any files, it just changes the permissions so I think it falls well within the realm of what "repair permissions" should be able to handle (but I'd bet it would be faster just to reinstall).
Rocket science is not required to understand that with the "-R" option applied to the root level of the startup drive this isn't something that the permissions repair utility (in any version, old or new) is capable of repairing. That option is the command line equivalent of the Finder's "Apply to enclosed items" option, so the command affects every file in the entire filesystem hierarchy!
At best, the utility can reset permissions only of files with entries in the receipts database -- it is the only place expected permissions are stored -- & if a user acting with superuser privileges clobbers access to that, the OS is going to make those changes, even if it means making the receipts folder unavailable to the routines that must access it. The idea that the OS should 'make allowances' for that special case is ridiculous -- it is tantamount to the idea that there should be a 'super-duper-user' built into the system that prevents users willfully acting with superuser privileges from doing anything foolish.
Apple doesn't need an excuse to leave things as they are. They are that way because the permissions repair utility is not, never has been, & never will be the panacea for every permissions issue that a few users seem to think it should be. As far as I can tell, the only basis for that idea is a superficial examination of the name of the utility, some wishful thinking, & more than a little disregard for what is impractical, if not downright impossible, to implement in a general purpose, UNIX-based OS.
Anytime any user invokes sudo, they should remember the time-tested warning that *with great power comes great responsibility*. In one form or another, that warning has been around for at least 2000 years. It is no less true today. There is no need for anyone to apologize for the fact that not even Apple has found a way around it!

  • My system drives locked up -- "custom" access can't be reset

My system crashed and it took be a day and a half to get it working again: Lion wouldn't reinstall from the DVD, from the internet or from the Lion USB stick I made.  Finally I pulled out all the drives and put in only a Lion drive I had set aside as a safety. This worked.
My main system drive and the Time Machine drive display a little lock icon and when I open Info, their permissions are all listed as "custom."  Worse, when I try to change them, I can't.
All my data is on those drives and Lion won't even let me open them to transfer files.
How do I change the permissions?

I've been wrestling for three days with being locked out of all drives except one. I've tried everything on the planet including variations on the following, with no success. I was stunned when these two simple commands, cut and pasted into terminal, worked. I repeat this from the archives since it took me ages to find it among all the other posts that were efforts to help. Frame this, bronze it, put it on the wall, worship at its feet. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to relax using my Macs again. V.K., you're a god. How about visit a bolt on Cupertino.

run the following terminal commands (copy and paste, please)
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal. this should unlock your drives.

  • Executed "sudo chown -R admin /" by mistake. how do i check everything?

So "sudo chown -R admin /" was executed by mistake on an OSX 10.8.5 machine that's connected with a multiuser network. In addition to screwing up the local machine, it may have effected many other things since / includes /Network, /Volumes, possible non-Mac mounts, etc.
I was looking in system.log, and it doesn't show which files had their permissions actually changed. Is there any log on the machine where the command was executed, which lists all the files under / that chown was applied to before it was stopped? And would it show what the ownership was changed from? I'd like to go through that list and know the extent of the damage.
    Thanks.

There is no log for that operation. Boot into your recovery volume and run Repair Permissions. It will take a while. You will have to re-run that command with the appropriate user on each user home directory. Some applications, particularly those that use DRM, will be scrambled and will have to be reinstalled. After repairing permissions and fixing the users, login as a user and try to run the expensive applications. Any that need reinstallation will alert you to that fact.

  • [SOLVED] How to chown files in mounted drive?

I'm trying to mount my 2nd hard drive (used as a data partition by a prior Win7 installation) as user.
    In /etc/fstab I have:
    /dev/sdb5 /mnt/win auto user,noauto 1 1
I can then run "mount /dev/sdb5" without sudo. But it sets the owner and group of /mnt/win to root:root and permissions to -rwx------
Running "sudo chown -R ian:users /mnt/win" only changes the directories, not the files. I can't find anything in the chown manpage to indicate an option I'm missing. Can anybody help me out? Not much point mounting the partition if I can't even read them.
    Thanks.

  • How to install Creative Cloud on any drive other than my System drive...

You are now chatting with 'Bhagawan'
Bhagawan: Hello. Welcome to Adobe Technical Support.
    Bhagawan: Hi Steve
Steve: It appears CC installs on my system drive without asking me. The way I manage my system - this is not acceptable. So, how do I install on the drive I install all my other apps?
Bhagawan: I understand that you want to install Creative Cloud desktop app. Am I correct?
Steve: On a particular drive - not my system drive.
    Steve: CC, Photoshop, etc.
Bhagawan: I will be glad to check and help you with this issue.
Bhagawan: Steve, creative cloud desktop app can be install only on C drive, but other apps you select for other drive.
Steve: My C: drive is dedicated to my OS only.
Steve: It is a special drive that will not work for very long if software companies put their programs on it till it fills up and then everything stops.
Steve: Didn't Adobe think of this?
Steve: I have one computer that only has a few MBs left of C:. What do I do on that computer?
    Steve: "left on C:"
    Bhagawan: Give me a minute.
    Bhagawan: Thank you.
Bhagawan: Steve, I'm really sorry, creative cloud desktop app will be installed on C Drive, since the operating system is installed, but other Creative Cloud apps can be installed other Drive and depends on file size.

I had the same problem and finally solved it.
It is "funny" that CC doesn't ask you where to install apps. Or better to say, it asks you but doesn't care. In Creative Cloud desktop app/Preferences there is option to choose where you want apps to be installed, but they are still installed in C:/Program Files/....
How to install apps on secondary drive in just 3 steps:
    1. Go to page Adobe CC 2014 Direct Download Links – Creative Cloud 2014 Release | ProDesignTools and download all apps that you will need.
    2. Once downloaded, install it. During installation you will be asked where you want app to be installed (just like in any other "normal" installation)
    3. Be happy
    Hope I helped

  • How can I get "all my files" to recognize files in a non system drive?

I use a Mac Pro with four internal drives, OSX 9.2. My system drive is an SSD so I keep user files on another drive in an adjacent bay.
Files in my non-system disc are not displayed in the "all my files" finder view. If I copy a file from the system disc to my user disc, the copy is not recognized, and when I trash the original, of course, there is no reference to either. If I search, spotlight finds it. This behavior seems to apply to all files and is regardless of anything selected in the sidebar before "all my files". I have not marked any files, folders or drives as private. I presume I must have a set a pref wrong. I would really appreciate any advice.
    Thank you.

To change the program that .indd files default to when opened in OSX, right click on the .indd file > Open With > Other.
Then navigate to the version of InDesign that you want to open them with (I have CS6 installed but its the same for CS5). Make sure you have "Always Open With" selected.

  • TrueCrypt 6.2 system drive encryption hangs system sometimes a day

    Hi,
I use truecrypt for years with xp and vista - last with Vista and T500, a few weeks ago I installed windows 7 x64 rtm. Every thing works fine and so I checked step by step my usual installed apps and tools.
I see win7 is not supported by truecrypt but seems to work fine. But sometimes (one or two a hour) my system hangs for about 10 to 40 seconds. So I decided to go step by step backwards and removed installed tools.
Removing TC solved my problem. Has anybody seen the same (TC6.2 on Win7 ult. x64 using Lenovo T500 with Intel SSD)?
    best regards
      Ronny

I have exactly the same problem, but with a HP Elitebook 2530p
    TrueCrypt 7.0a
    Windows 7 x64
SSD drive, but had the same problem on my traditional HDD.
The interval is somewhat longer for me, maybe a few times a day.
And, just as you discovered, removing truecrypt system encryption resolves the issue. Wonder if it's an issue with just the system drive encryption thingy, or it affects all systems having encrypted volumes opened?

  • What are the requirements in terms of system drive for visual studio 2013

According to this thread "visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio/suggestions/2120283-allow-users-to-install-entirely-to-another-hard-dr"  it is not possible to install visual studio fully on another drive rather that
the system drive. This link "visualstudio.com/products/visual-studio-professional-with-msdn-vs#Fragment_SystemRequirements" states the system requirement for visual studio pro 2013. However can somebody clarify what is needed in terms of system drive
requirement e.g. out of the 20 gb, how much is needed on the system drive.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Exact space required will vary widely based on installation components chosen and what you may have already installed on your system.
And When you install your VS in another Drive and run the VS installer, you can see system requirement in installation screen.
Because my work computer only have C Drive, I test the VS2012 professional installation in my home computer E drive. The Screen below:
I think the system requirement can also display when you install  VS 2013.

    Hi Maciejhttp://forums.adobe.com/people/Maciej%20Przepi%C3%B3ra
    Thanks for your inputs.
I have memory leaks in my code. I have tried iDialog->Release() code which reduces some of the memory leaks
Though I want to use more clean method of InterfacePtr.
"To prevent reference counts  from incrementing, as in Type 1a and 1b, use this constructor, which does not  call IPMUnknown::AddRef:"
Which Constructor you are pointing out, I didn't get it.
    I tried InterfacePtr<IDialog> iDialog((IDialog *)iWidgetParent->QueryParentFor(IID_IDIALOG));
It started giving me assert again.
Please give an example how to do it or which InterfacePtr constructor doesn't call AddRef().
Many thanks for helping me with this.

  • Help - Unmounting external USB drives causes error to system drive

    Hi,
I am having problems with my Mid 2009 24" iMac OS 10.6.7. When unmounting external drives(usb OR firewire), I get either a message that "your computer must be restarted...." or sometimes system freezes.
Upon reboot and examining system drive with Disk Utility, I will find file count and/or folder count errors. I must then reboot from my SL disc, repair the errors and reboot, after which the system seems to run without problems...
So far, upon reconnecting and mounting those external drives, I have found no errors or anything that would lead me to believe that they were not unmounted correctly...
Any help with this would be appreciated. It is beginning to be frustrating to go through this crash and repair of the system drive each time I try to use an external drive....
    Thanks,
    JP

I have heard others with this problem so I am really surprised none here can help.  My iMac has just crashed for the third time with corrupted disks because of this problem.
I will try Macfixit or something.  Thanks

  • Do I need a fast system drive if i also have a RAID 0 array for media?

If my video and media files are all on a Fast RAID array then do i need a fast system drive?
Im building a system. The only thing on my system drive will be programs. And I will have a RAID array for my video and PSD files - but my System drive is an older UltraDMA EIDE133 250g Maxtor. This system drive is testing at 51mb/s Read, and 26mb/s write. (According to Blackmagic disk speed check program)
A New SATA drive tests at 53 write and 43 read. So should i bother upgrading my system drive to a RAPTOR 150 or stick with the older EIDE drive? Main Programs i use are Adobe After effects, premiere pro, Photoshop for uncompressed editing with blackmagic intensity.
    Specs:
    MB: Tyan K8WE
    AMD Opteron 270 (dual)
    4GB RAM.
    Nvidia Quadro FX 560
    Apple cinema Display 30'
4x500gb RAID array (2TB total) on Nvidia SATA motherboard controler.

    Jeron,
    Yes, you are probably.
    - Its i either spend $900 dollars or $200.
The best possible Rig is this; I spend $500 dollars on a dedicated PCI-X RAID controller card. I buy a Raptor 150g system drive $200. And then buying another 3 drives to add to the RAID array of 2 disks i already have = $300.
Or option 2: My motherboard (K8WE) has 4 SATA-II ports. So I could set up a 4 disk raid with what i have right now and be achieving 210+ mb/s read and write. My system drive would be off the IDE/133 channel. Then i would only have to spend $200 on 2 disks.
I have been trying to decipher if it is logical to spend that much more money - when it is possible i will only achieve maybe 50 more Megabytes a second. - and have windows and programs start faster.
A part of me says - "any time i try to save money on something it comes with calamity and disaster". vs. a part of me that says - "you could get more bang for your buck".

  • How to create a new system drive

I have a 4.5 yr old G5 that I want to keep for awhile, but I think its time to replace the original system drive. The second drive is a bigger and more recent drive that I want to reformat and install the latest OS X on it, then move to the top position as the system drive. I was thinking I would leave drive 2 in place and do the reformat and system install before moving it up to the top - will that work? Isn't there some concern about "master and slave" positions (or drive 0 and drive 1) when it comes to system drives? Can I reformat and install onto drive 2 and then simply move it up to the top position to then function as the system drive? Any better procedure? (I'm planning to install a new, larger drive in the lower slot after I create and move the new system drive.)
    Thanks for any advice!

    Hi
No need at all to move drives around (and it can be a pain to do so in the G5s anyway) - just install your new drive in the empty slot, install the system, and use System Preferences - Startup Disk to make that the boot drive. Master/slave doesn't apply to SATA systems.
