Suggested iCal Improvements

This is not a question, but observations about how iCal can be improved.
While iCal is perfectly acceptable for day-to-day tasks in the same time
zone, it presents the user with very serious deficiencies when the
task(s) involve more than one time zone. This point was made forcibly
during a recent trip from the East Coast of the US to Australia. During
this trip, the following shortcomings were noted:
1) Although time zone can be specified when making an event entry, it is
not possible to later edit that time zone. Therefore, if the initial
entry of an event was made in the wrong time zone, the only option is to
completely re-enter the event, which can be problematic if it has a lot
of notes/links, like a hotel or rental car reservation.
2) Only one time zone is permitted per event. This does not work well
when traveling by air where you start in one time zone and end in
another. A better implementation would be to default both time zones to
the time zone selected in preferences, but allow them to be changed for
BOTH the start AND end times. (Another feature that would be nice to
have is a readout of actual elapsed time of an event--how long is it
from the time I get on a jet at midnight Thursday at LAX and arrive at
8:00 AM Saturday in Australia? But then again, do I really want to
know?!)
3) When changing time zones in the date/time preferences, it changes the
days and times for all events in iCal to reference whatever time zone is
set, regardless of the time zone selected when the event was created. It
would be better to have events reference the time zone in which they
were created. For example, I'm in Australia, but have a meeting
scheduled in Washington DC on Wednesday night; however, while I'm in
Australia the calendar indicates the meeting is on Thursday (referencing
the Australian time selected in preferences), which causes confusion if
I'm communicating with someone in DC about the meeting. Likewise, when
creating an event in a different time zone (e.g., events in Australia
while on the US East Coast), the events will show up a day later than
they are entered because that's what time it will be on the East Coast
when they occur in Australia. The best solution would be to default to
showing all events relative to the time zone selected when they were
created (both beginning and ending) and perhaps have an option to "see"
what time that will be relative to the time zone selected in
preferences.
Making these three changes to iCal would make it MUCH more traveler
friendly.

  • Does anyone have any suggestions to improve the performance to improve Firefox for andoid (more details).

    I'm using it on a Samsung Captivate SGHi-897 with Jellybean 2.2 (I'm unable to upgrade the OS @this time). Firefox was recommended by a freind, however, so far I've been very disappointed with it, as, it is extremely slow and constanly crashes. I've tried all of the suggestions provided, but there is no improvememt. I realize it may be not all that compatible with this properly working device or OS. I have Samsung Galxaxy SGHi-727 Skyrocket with IC 4.1, however, I've been waiting for a part for it coming from Aisa, which seems to be taking forever, so in the meantime I'm.stuck with this. I was wondering if you may have any suggestions on how to speed it up and prevent it from crashing so much, other than what's on your help guide since those changes I've tried make no improvement in it's performance. I would very much prefer to use Firefox on this device, as well as, after I repair my other device for a number of other reasons, but if I'm unable to improve it, I'll just go back to what I was using. Thank you and be well.

    Suggestion for improvement:
    I'd like <select size="1" multiple> to provide a dropdown with checkboxes like this:

    Can that be done?

  • Suggestion for Improving Number

    Hello Oracle Java community,
    I've recently encountered some difficulties using the abstract class java.lang.Number, and have a suggestion for improvement.
    I'm writing a class that computes statistical information on a list of numbers - it would be nice to not couple this class to Integer, Double, BigDecimal, or any other wrapper by using generics. I saw that there is a nice superclass that all Number objects inherit from.
    I came up with:
    public class Statistics<T extends Number> {
    private List<T> data;
    // statistical data that i wish to find and store, such as median, mean, standard dev, etc
    public synchronized void setData(List<T> data) {
    this.data = data;
    if (this.data != null && !this.data.isEmpty()) calculateStatistics();
    private void calculateStatistics() {
    // Welcome to instanceof and casting hell...
    h4. It would be nice to have richer functionality from the Number class, say to do mathematical operations with them or compare them.
    h4. After all, in the real world it is possible to do so.
    h4. Real numbers are much like BigDecimal. Why not take the idea of BigDecimal, and make that the parent of Integer, BigInteger, Double, Short, Byte, Float (I'm probably forgetting a few)? All of those are limited forms of real numbers. It would make comparison between Number datatypes easy, would probably remove all of that duplicated arithmetic code between all of the children of Number, and also allow Numbers to be used in powerful generic ways. The parent/replacement of BigDecimal could even be named RealNumber, which stays true to its math domain.
    As a side note, I'm solving this problem by taking an initial step to convert the List<whatever type of Number that the user enters> into a List<BigDecimal> by getting the toString() value of each element when cast as a Number.
    private List<BigDecimal> convertData(List<T> data) {
    ArrayList<BigDecimal> converted = new ArrayList<BigDecimal>();
    for (T element : data) {
    converted.add(new BigDecimal(((Number) element).toString()));
    return converted;
    Criticism is always welcome.
    Thanks for your time and thoughts.

    How compareTo() came into existence is from Comparable interface. As I understand, Comparable came into existence since Collections API has sorting functions - which needs to be run with a matching Comparable object that knows how to determine which element is larger than the other (not limited to objects representing numbers, you might sort a list of Persons). Hence, compareTo() is not solely meant for the comparison of numbers. Existence of the method in BigDecimal is just one case.
    Subclasses can override the equals() method, but that cannot be implemented in a cleaner manner and leads to a very poor design. For example, you might want to compare an Integer and a Float. So the Integer class's equals() method need to have some if-else structure to determine the other type and then compare. Same holds true for the Float class's equals() method as well. Ultimately, Everything becomes a mess. All subclasses of RealNumber needs to know about all other subclasses of RealNumber. And you will not be able to introduce new subtypes and expect the equals() method to work correctly.
    To avoid this, you need to depend on a single representation form for all types of numbers. If that's the case, you might just live with something like BigDecimal and not use Byte, Float, Integer,... (which we kind of do in some cases - for example to represent monetary amounts). So we can live without Byte, Float, Integer,...
    Then we need some utility classes that would contain some number type specific functions to work with primitives. So we will also have Byte, Float, Integer... unrelated to BigDecimal.
    Clearly, the wrapper types are there not because of the need to represent real world number types, but because of the need to represent computer domain number types. Hence, they have been organized not according to relationships found in real world number types. Many of us find this way of modelling sufficient and have an understanding about the limitations. But if you need to model the real world number relationships for some special reason, you might write some new classes. Then again there will be real world aspects that you will not be able to model easily. So you will model some aspects and neglect the other.

  • ICal improvements will come

    iCal to be fixed.
    At the MacWorld conference in SF on last Wednesday, Jan.16th, 2008, after the Leopard presentation in the exhibit hall, I talked to Ronak, who was the iCal developing team member. He said, that they will make changes to new iCal "pretty soon".
    It didn't sound like they started working on them, but I could be wrong. It also meant, that they know about our unhappiness with their "upgrades". Looks like their other projects are more important at this time then our old iCal, because not that many people complained.
    I told Ronak, that everything what I did was around the old iCal. 80% of my work was related to iCal and I spent around 45% of my computer time doing planning and writing notes there. I liked to have all my notes in one place, where I can access them in seconds. I like what's new in Leopard, however... I would trade 300 new improvements they all brag about for the old iCal Drawer.
    The question is how many people were as much dependent on the old iCal as I was? Was it only 1% of Mac users, or 5%, or may be 10%+? HELP me please.
    Write your notes to Apple and we should make these programmers realize, that there were many thousands of users of old iCal.
    Here is how:
    Would you please write email about your own iCal problems again. All who wrote to Apple before, let's do it again. I just did. Let them know 2nd time, that we NEED old system and explain WHY do we need it...
    Here is my example:
    I'm now carrying 2 computers to many places [my old iBookG4 with old iCal, + the new small MacBook with Leopard]. I must have iBook just to work on iCal.
    If I knew about the changes I would NOT be buying new MacBook for total of $2,000. I feel like I was tricked.
    Please send complains to Apple from as many users as possible, and hope that by the end of May or even in April, we will have some changes.
    IMPORTANT! Ask your friends who stopped using new iCal to write about their problems too. So far, from what we got from Apple, looks like they do not care about iCal users since Oct.2007. They did nothing for 3 months.
    However Ronak said, that they DO READ all Mac users opinions posted on the website and they make changes if they mess up something. Looks like not to many people complained about old iCal "improvements".
    I told him, that they made my life much harder and I need this tool every day to work with. Let's wait and hope that we'll see new iCal improvements "soon", as Ronak said.
    Andre

    to Ronak form iCal programming team,
    Please help us to bring the drawer back from the old iCal. You promised to do something.
    80% of my work was related to iCal and I spent around 45% of my computer time doing planning and writing notes there. I liked to have all my notes in one place, where I can access them in seconds. No fancy pop ups, no extra screens, no complexity in operating the iCal.
    I liked Panther/Tiger iCal so much, that with Leopard... I would trade all 300 new improvements for the old iCal Drawer. Just 1 item will make me happy. I bought new MacBook for $2000 and I don't use it more than 10% of the time.
    I'm frustrated and I feel cheated, because I can't even install Tiger there.
    It's NOT COMPATIBLE with new hardware.
    The old iBookG4 remains my main computer, because of the iCal I can work on.
    H E L P please. There are tens of thousands of us needing old iCal setup.
    Make the iCal2 possible to work with Leopard. P L E E E E E S E, and please again.
    Let us know if you are planning to bring the drawer AT ALL? If not, let us know, please.
    Just write it in plain few words.

  • Suggestions To Improve E90 Calendar

    Hi,
    I bought the E90 Communicator to replace my old PSION Series 3mx and I am quite happy with it.
    I use the calender application a lot, and that's were I'm missing a few features I used a lot on my PSION:
    - copy & paste an entry
    - repeat entry not only by date, but also by day of week (for example: every second Friday of the month)
    - search entries (for example: find the next appointment with my doctor)
    I hope to find these features in one of the next software updates.

    Thanks for the clarification - its nice to know I did not misunderstand your original intention.
    and I think the post and discussion was/is a good idea -
    regardless of whether Nokia wants to/will actually visibly follow up on whats discussed here -
    it seems - it seems to me that someone from there might well... just happen across this page (one reason for a forum in the first place - is to get a sense of what the users are talking about)... and make some notes.
    I believe that companies that dont communicate directly with their customers (but advertise that they do!).. will listen - they just dont want to COMMUNICATE.. (because there are just too many of us - with too many "good ideas" and too many clueless about what it would take to actually do what we want...
    So if anybody coming along wants to make suggestions to IMPROVE the native calendar... I think the suggestions should be made here - despite the fact that the other people -with far more experience (and frustration) are more interested in using this piece to compare someone else's product.
    We're on a Nokia site... Nokia is looking - whether we see immediate evidence of this or not...
    thanks for the post! its a good idea - no matter what "they" say! (smile)

  • Suggestions for improvements

    hello guys.can u give me small suggestions to improve this site?
    www.gogua.gr
    i cant change it a lot because the owner like it this way (buttons logo etc) but some lines here and there or something like that could be nice

    but i want the menu and the footer to be the same in my template.
    can i do that without having to change manually the code for every
    page? (to set the photo rollover image in the photo page for example) i
    dont know if this is possible.
    I offer a DW Extension that will automatically do this for you.  You can put identical menu code on each page on the site (in your case by using a Template) as well as the divaGPS Extension,  and then let divaGPS  handle the you-are-here menu highlighting for you.
    Usually on this forum I suggest the free version of divaGPS, however because you are using an image-based menu, you would need to buy the paid version.  It's not expensive and honestly would make your site more user-friendly. You can learn more about it here:

  • Any suggestions for improving my efficiency?

    These are the two methods I've come up with to use what I have for making movies. One is for DVDs. The other is for making QuickTime MOV files for CDs. This is the process I have to use because we don't yet have our digital video camera that is firewire compatible with Final Cut.
    For DVDs that will play in DVD players or media software on your computer:
    1. I take the Video_TS folder and run it through DVD Imager (free, macupdate.com) which converts it into an IMG file.
    2. I use the Apple Disk Utility (part of OS X) and burn the IMG file to a DVD.
    Simple enough.
    Making our recorded footage editable in Final Cut and then exporting as a QuickTime movie is a little more complicated. There may be a simpler way to do all this (like get a fire-wire FC-compatible camera I can capture footage from) but this is the process I finally got to work:
    1. In the Video_TS folder are two VOB files. The larger one is the one that actually has your video on it. I use MPEG Streamclip (free, squared5.com) to remove the timebreaks (otherwise all you get is the poster frame) and convert it to a Quicktime MOV file. For settings, I just use Apple Video, 720x480 NTSC, and 30 fps. You need to buy the Apple Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20, apple.com) for this free software to work.
    2. Import the MOV file into Final Cut (I use Express which is $300 from apple.com) and do your editing and other yumminess. You'll need to render it first.
    3. Export as an MOV file ... there's no .mov extension and the Info says it's a Final Cut Express Movie file, not a QT MOV which makes me nervous so I I open it in QuickTime Pro ($30, apple.com) and export it using the Movie to Quicktime Movie setting.
    4. Then I burn my Quicktime movies to a CD.
    Any suggestions for improving my efficiency?

    "For DVDs that will play in DVD players..."
    If what you want is just to make copies of a DVD you burned yourself (eg using iDVD or your DVD camcorder) there is a simpler way: just create an image of the DVD on your desktop using Disk Utility, and then burn it using Disk Utility.
    You need to go into the process of copying the VIDEO_TS folder only if you want to make changes to it. For example you might need myDVDEdit, a very powerful free editor of the DVD structure (to change the menu button behaviour, or so). Or maybe if the image is of a different size, from a small DVD to a large one.

  • Where can i submit suggestions for improvement of email?

    I have a few suggestions to improve the email program used on the iPhone and iPad.  How do I get them to Apple to be considered in the next iOS update?  First suggestion is the ability to "mark" contacts when sending to multiple email contacts.  Currently you have to select one for the "to" field then return to contacts to select the next one. Should be able to bring up contacts list and place a check beside each one you want to send to and the hit "done" to populate the "to, cc, or bcc" fields.
    The second suggestion is the ability to create email groups directly on the iPad/iPhone for frequent lists I send to.
    The third suggestion is the ability to have a "read receipt" option so I know that the email was delivered and read.
    Thanks,
    Keith

    Specifically for the iPad.

  • FCP 10.1 slow timeline and editing - Any suggestions to improve speed?

    Recently updated to  OS X 10.9.1 and FCP 10.1. Now experiencing very slow editing and movement in timeline. FCP is responding some 2 to 5 seconds after providing an editing command. The slowest response is to scrolling in the timeline  - 2 finger scroll does not respond for up to 10 seconds after doing it.
    Render times are fine and similar to previous FCP X versions.
    Never had this problem in previous versions of FCP X.
    So far I have done the following things based on forums and a call to apple support(?).
    Deleted all plug ins.
    Started from scratch a project that I was half way through and imported all clips from scratch to a new Library (external Hard Drive).
    Deleted FCP and reinstalled including deleting all preferences.
    Timeline is quick in the early stages of the project but gets slower as I progress - about 3 minutes into my project now (approx 200 clips) and editing time is becoming impossible.
    Am using Mac Book Pro with 2.5 GhzIntel Core i7, 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB.
    Anyone able to assist with further suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hi Ian and Russ
    Thanks for your interest.
    Hard drive is 500GB of which I have used approx 300GB. I am using an external hard drive for this project.Footage is from Canon 7D/70D which is H.264 which is the same as other successful projects.
    Yes I do have a number of photos (say 30 @ 18mp) that I am using as part of the project although I have used these before in previous versions of FCP X without impact.
    Tried activity monitor (first time I had used it).
    When scrowling through time line (one of the problem activities) memory does not move much- Real memory approx 925mb, Virtual memory 6GB, shared memory 44mb, Private memory 75mb. Interstingly though when performing this task CPU usage goes > 100% and averages 130%.
    Does this help with any potential diagnostics and solutions?
    Thanks

  • Suggestions for improving sharing

    Since Adobe Review is discontinued, I used with a couple of clients the new creative cloud sharing and I found some missing features or improvements needed:
    1. When a client is reviewing a file (i.e. a picture) he must input the email address to post a comment, this is annoying since I sent the review email to his address, so it's already verified.
    2. An important improvement would be a way to make a note (or link a comment) on a specific part of the picture/text so the comment can be highlighted in the context.
    3. I'd like also to receive a notification of new comments or see on the dashboard if new comments are present on a file, so I can review all the latest comments.
    4. There could be a button for "approval", if I put several versions of a work, client can approve the one he likes.
    Maybe some features are still present, please tell me if I'm wrong.
    thanks

    Thank you for the suggestions. Improvements with sharing and collaboration are coming. You can read more here on this Adobe blog post http://blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/coming-soon-to-creative-cloud/.
    Feel free to add more suggestions to the blog post or follow up here with more. We are listening.

  • Nokia Music software - Suggestions on improving it

    In the 0.000001 % chance of anyone from Nokia support / Software development etc etc actually reading this, may I make a small suggestion to improve on the Nokia Music software.
    Can you please please please give us users the choice of HOW the software stores the music files onto the PC & also on the phone's memory card
    Can we have a choice of whether the files are stored as 'Artist' > 'Album' > 'Track' OR just 'Album' > 'Track'
    As an example of how bad this is - Using the Nokia Store & Nokia Music - I had downloaded just 2 albums done by Will Smith & transferred straight over to my 5800XM phone (w/o any editing)
    I ended up with fourteen (Yes - FOURTEEN) folders on my MicroSD memory card
    All started with E:/music/Will Smith (feat. ......) (followed by some1 elses name) & only containing 1 or 2 songs in each folder'
    I don't know about anyone else - but I like my music stored in folders named after the Album, that way I have 16 (or more) tracks in a folder - & it looks IMHO more organisied
    Motto: Illegitimis non carborundum

    I've just found out another problem
    It MAY be my particular setup or something - but when I browse the Nokia music 'shop' & click the 'play 30sec clip' to listen to the track (to check it's the right version before downloading it) - Nokia Music software crashes with a message of (something like)
    'NokiaMusic.exe has caused a problem......'
    Now whether this is because I've got 'Comes with music' or it's because my 'default media player' isn't M$ Media player or that I have 'alternative Realplayer' instead of the 'Proper' Realplayer or something totally different - it's bloody annoying
    OK so I've got ~1yr free downloads - but I don't really want to download the track just to see if it's the track I really want, I'd like to 'stream' the 30sec clip before I decide
    Motto: Illegitimis non carborundum

    /people/boris.zarske/blog/2007/06/13/sizing-a-system-for-the-system-landscape-directory-of-sap-netweaver
    I have some queries related to improving the performance of a scenario in my landscape.
    Scenario : IDOC-SOAP (Synchronous with BPM)
    The mapping is simple with 3 fld direct mapping.
    Works grt with no problem in normal cases for one message transfer.
    But initial load ( when we put it in new system, the scenario generates erros if we send more than 23 IDOCs at a time)
    I have decided to perform the following to solve it.
    /people/william.li/blog/2008/03/07/step-by-step-guide-in-processing-high-volume-messages-using-pi-71s-message-packaging
    Will it help me because its a IDOC sync scenario.
    What can I do to improve the performance of this scenario?
    Please suggest me good suggestions to improve the performance
    Please do list me out points that I have to perform (for a sync scenario with BPM) as I am already confused watching lots of blogs posts.
    Nikhil.

    do you think that the performance tuning that I mentioned in the link will hold good with sync scenarios?
    i dont think so.....in this scenario the async mesg processing is made to wait
    from the blog:
    As you can see, for the 1st minute, all the messages are waiting to be processed. After 60 seconds,
    the packages will be created and processed. There is no change to the monitoring of each of the
    individual messages in SXI_MONITOR.
    ....but if you make a sync scenario wait....then probably you may run into the risk of blocking the Queues.......
    If this is going to be in production then i would have been more careful...becoz firstly it is BPM....then synchronous BPM.....then a processing wait......normally do not try to make the BPM processing wait...my small suggestion

  • It is Any suggestions for improving Oracle Tools GUI performance?

    Does anyone have any suggestions for improving the GUI performance of Oracles Java Tools? Response to events is very sloooow i.e. click on a menu in Oracle Directory Manager wait three seconds before the menu items appear.
    System Environment:
    Dell Inspiron 8100
    Windows XP Pro
    256MB Ram
    1 GHz
    Oracle:
    Oracle91 Enterprise Edition 9.0.1.1.1
    Other:
    No non Oracle Java components installed (JDKs, JREs etc.)
    Thanks

    If the database and the tools are just on the one box more memory is probably required. I had an nt box with 500MHz 256MB and Oracle 9i and the java tools were unusable. I upgraded to 768MB of ram and the java tools were much quicker. I use the java tools on my laptop 256MB and 800MHz and they work fine for remote databases (ie. no rdbms on the laptop).

  • Suggestions to improve the INSERT performance

    Hi All,
    I have a table which has 170 columns .
    I am inserting huge data 50K and more records into this table.
    my insert would be look like this.
    INSERT INTO /*+ append */ REPORT_DATA(COL1,COL2,COL3,COL4,COL5,COL6)
    SELECT  DATA1,DATA2,DATA3,DATA4,DATA5,DATA5 FROM TXN_DETAILS
    WHERE COL1='CA';
    Here i want to insert values for only few columns.Hence i specifies only those column names in insert statement.
    But when huge data(50k+) returned by select query then this statement taking   very long time to execute(approximately 10 to 15 mins).
    Please  suggest me to improve this insert statement performance.I am also using 'append' hint.
    Thanks in advance.

    a - Disable/drop indexes and constraints - It's far faster to rebuild indexes after the data load, all at-once. Also indexes will rebuild cleaner, and with less I/O if they reside in a tablespace with a large block size.
    b - Manage segment header contention for parallel inserts - Make sure to define multiple freelist (or freelist groups) to remove contention for the table header. Multiple freelists add additional segment header blocks, removing the bottleneck.  You can also use Automatic Segment Space Managementhttp://www.dba-oracle.com/art_dbazine_ts_mgt.htm (bitmap freelists) to support parallel DML, but ASSM has some limitations
    c - Parallelize the load - You can invoke parallel DML (i.e. using the PARALLEL and APPEND hint) to have multiple inserts into the same table. For this INSERT optimization, make sure to define multiple freelists and use the SQL "APPEND" option. If you submit parallel jobs to insert against the table at the same time, using the APPEND hint may cause serialization, removing the benefit of parallel jobstreams.
    d - APPEND into tables - By using the APPEND hint, you ensure that Oracle always grabs "fresh" data blocks by raising the high-water-mark for the table. If you are doing parallel insert DML, the Append mode is the default and you don't need to specify an APPEND hint. Also, if you're going w/ APPEND, consider putting the table into NOLOGGING mode, which will allow Oracle to avoid almost all redo logging."
    insert /*+ append */ into customer values ('hello',';there');
    e - Use a large blocksize - By defining large (i.e. 32k) blocksizes for the target table, you reduce I/O because more rows fit onto a block before a "block full" condition (as set by PCTFREE) unlinks the block from the freelist.
    f - Use  NOLOGGING
    f - RAM disk - You can use high-speed solid state disk (RAM-SAN) to make Oracle inserts run up to 300x faster than platter disk.

  • How to make suggestion for improvements in LR

    How do I make suggestions for new features or improvements in LR?
    The stacking function, IMO, needs to be improved.  The time between shots does not take into account the length of exposure.  For example if my exposure is 5 seconds the stacking exposure will not add the two exposures together in the time setting < 4 seconds.
    Ideally I would like to see an HDR stacking function, looks at time between exposures (taking into account the length of exposure) and changes in exposure.
    ideally there would be similar options for pans and focus stacking.
    Thanks
    Rich
