Suggestion: Click Box needs option to display success/failure caption until next click

As it stands right now, if I want to put several click boxes on a page and have the success captions for each appear in the same location, I can only set the success/failure caption to display for a limited amount of time. That is the only way to make the text disappear from the screen.  The problem is, I want to have several different click boxes. When the user clicks, the success caption should display. Then the user shoudl be able to click on another click box and have the success caption for that appear in the same location. The problem is the success caption from the previous click box may still be displayed (depending on how long it was set to display for).  There really needs to be an option to select that says display until next click.  It does no good to guess how long a user will want to read the success/failure text before they decide to click on another text box.
You have the same problem with audio. As it is right now, a user can click on several click boxes and have several different audio tracks playing simultaneously. There needs to be an option to disable the first audio track upon clicking the next click box.
I can't believe this problem hasn't been fixed before this. It is a very annoying problem. I never had half the problems I have with Captivate, when I used Authorware. If there is some kind of work-around I'd like to know what it is.

My suggestion would be that you think a little further outside the box to solve this 'issue'.
It appears to me that you want to display information in captions that appear and disappear based on user interaction, correct?  AND you also want audio to play at the same time, but you don't want more than one audio track to play, correct?
To achieve what you want requires at least two separate mouse events.  One event triggers the caption and audio to appear.  The other must trigger any previous captions to disappear and immediately shut off their audio.  Since you don't know which of your objects will be the first one interacted with by the user, all of them must be set up to check for any previously invoked captions and audio before turning on their own caption and audio.
Now all of this CAN be done using Captivate's variables and advanced actions.  But there IS a much simpler solution staring you in the face. Why is it essential that all of this MUST happen with mouse clicks?  Why not use mouse overs events instead?
Captivate provides rollover caption and rollover image objects for which you can attach audio to the object that appears on rollover.  These objects have two mouse events (rollover and rollout). Rollover triggers the caption to appear so that the text displays and it's audio plays, while the rollout triggers the caption to disappear and automatically shut off the audio.  This means that the user merely needs to move their mouse around the screen rolling over the hot spots to see information and hear audio. And if you just place a click box or button on the slide to pause the playhead, your user can spend as much time as they want reviewing the content before moving on.  You don't have to worry about rewinding the playhead with Advanced Actions because clicks on your content objects would resume play.
These rollover objects can be set up in seconds with audio attached.  I'm surprised more Captivate authors don't use them given how easy they are to apply in comparison to other click-driven solutions using Advanced Actions.

  • Several click boxes on screen but only one failure caption appearing

    Hi,
I'm using Captivate 6 and I have 3 click boxes on one slide. I have set each click box to have a Failure caption however, only the failure caption of the click box in the top position of the timeline appears in the course.
Ideally I want all 3 captions to appear at once if the user fails to click in any of the correct areas.
Do anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Liam

    Hi Liam
One way I can fathom would be to create a blank slide. Insert three text captions that present the text you wish to see and arrange them so they "work" aesthetically. Then preview the project and screen capture. Then configure the background as transparent and save the image. Use this image as the Failure caption for that top level Click Box object.

  • How can I display the failure caption with click box when using function keys to navigate a sim?

I am using the keyboard function keys to navigate a simulation using Click Boxes. For instance, F7 advances the simulation to the next screen, but if the learner selects F5, a failure caption displays. I have tried deleting and re-entering the click box, placing the click box at the top of the timeline levels, starting the click box at 0 and 0.5, making the click box visible and invisible, and make the click box the entire size of the screen.

Well, I guess that's that. Thanks for replying, I do appreciate it or else I would have been trying for days, wasting all sorts of time.
    Until we meet again,

  • When links are clicked, they do not fully display the NEW page until the mouse is moved.I know it is a current bug, and appears in no other browsers that I know of.

It was pointed out that my links do not function correctly on Firefox on a Windows platform. When links are clicked, they do not fully display the NEW page until the mouse is moved! I have now observed it for myself on my fathers PC running Windows XP on Firefox. My PC is on Windows7
It is the 5 version of Firefox, so I know it is a current bug, and appears in no other browsers that I know of.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4+ you can use one of these to start in <u>[[Safe mode]]</u>:
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

  • Is it possible to hide success/failure captions in the test, but make them available in the review?

    Hi Everyone
I've got a 50 question, timed quiz and we want to disable the success and failure captions because they slow the students down, frankly, are kind of annoying.  However, we want to allow the users to review the quiz after taking it.  The problem is that the review feed back seems to use the success/failure object, so, when you review the quiz, you just see the questions with no feedback.  Kind of pointless.  Does anyone know of a way to disable (or remove) the success/failure captions in the quiz, while providing feedback in the quiz review?
    Thanks

    Hello,
For the moment a lot of people are still working with CP4, others have adopted CP5 already, so it helps if you mention the version you're using.
The feedback showed during review is in the Review area (you can see it in the slide on the stage). The message in this Review Area is not linked to the Correct/Incorrect/Incomplete messages you can show during answering the Questions. If you are using CP5 you can deactivate the Correct and Incomplete messages in the Quiz Properties panel, region Options. You cannot deactivate the Incorrect message. If the user answers correctly and the Correct caption is not there, the project will continue after clicking on the Submit button. However when the user answers incorrectly, the Incorrect message will appear however, instructing them to use 'Y' or click on the slide to continue.
During Review the user will see the Review Message, if you allowed Review (Quiz Preferences, Settings). The message showed is configured in the "Quiz Review Message' that you'll see in the Properties panel when the Review area is selected (or using the button 'Quiz Review Messages...' in the Quiz Preferences, Settings). If the user answered correctly, the message 'You answered this question correctly" (is indeed similar to the Correct caption). If the user answered incorrectly, his answer will be displayed and the correct answer (which is different from the Incorrect caption).
Hope this explains the difference.  If you are using CP4, let me know and I'll try to explain the workflow in that UI.

  • Strange issue in custom Success/Failure captions

    Hi,
I have a strange issue in my custom Success/Failure caption. If I use 'S' letter in my customized caption .bmp file, it is not showing properly in the captivate. Attached file is for your reference. I tried converting text into image in photoshop, still it shows the same thing. Any thoughts??
    Thanks in Advance,
    -Ajay

    OK.  That's what I thought.
So what I think is going on here is due to the way Captivate assembles text captions that can stretch to any size based on the component images.  I think your corner image that contains the text is being stretched right at the point where the S character is located on the end of Congratulations.  Captivate is achieving the resizable text caption by repeating the last few pixels of each background image.
If you want to test my theory, just make your Congratulations text slightly shorter (use a condensed font or make the font size smaller) and I think your issue will go away.

  • Memory Game Success/Failure Caption Duration

Is there any way to extend the amount of time the success and failure captions stay on the screen for the memory game in Captivate 7?

Memory game can fail because of time out as well. Since the variable assigned to memory game does not show up in the variables list, I don't think you can delay it for failure condition.
For success condition, delete the default captions, add your own caption, name it as say, Success, assign the following advanced action for On Success.
    Show Success.
    Assign cpCmndGotoFrame with CpInfoCurrentFrame

  • Why do I continually get the message about "... a script on this page..."?? Happens many, many times during the day, and requires a click on that box to get rid of it... until next time!

I haven't written down the remainder of the message in the dialogue box; I think it continues with "...has stopped running...", or, "... has stopped working...". If I don't choose one of the two buttons, and try to continue whatever it was that I was doing, the the 'preferred' button blinks / flashes until I select one of those two buttons. Only then can I continue with my interrupted task.

  • F9 as shortcut key in click boxes

I've captured a software program with Captivate 3. Now I want
my users to simulate the Function buttons. I've assigned a short
cut key to a click box, so when a user clicks the right function
button, they go to the next screen. Everything works fine except
when I use the F9 key, when I do that, the screen opens and
immediately goes to the next screen. I've checked the option 'Pause
for success/failure' captions as I did with the other screens,

    Can anybody help ?

The correct answer needs the whole text you want them to

  • Click Box does not show failure caption

In one of the slides, I have 4 pictures. I put click box over
each of the pictures, one of them I set success caption, the other
3 failure caption. When I click the success box, success caption
shows, but when i click the other box, the failure caption could
    not show.
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks

    Hi EstherH
I don't believe you can make it work that way. Here is how
Success/Failure captions work with Click Boxes. Any click on the
box itself will cause the Success Caption to dsplay (If it has been
enabled). Any click OUTSIDE the Click Box area will cause the
Failure Caption to display. (Again, if it has been enabled).
I'm thinking you can get what you want by thinking backwards
a bit. For each of the three incorrect Click Box areas, configure
    the
Success Caption to resemble what you want the Failure to
read. You may also wish to change the caption style so it's
different. If you did this, a click on the other Click Box would
trigger it's Success Caption to display, but it would effectively
present a Failure to the user.
    Make sense? Hope so... Rick

  • Click Boxes in published PDFs

I have a click box that opens a linked PDF (not a url but an actual file) in my Captivate program.  When I publish the Captivate program the SWF and HTML5 versions of the program will open the linked PDF file when I click on the click box.  However, when I publish a PDF version of the Captivate program, the PDF version will not open the linked PDF file.  I have put the PDF in the publish folder.  Does the PDF version of not support the ability to use click boxes to open linked files?

    Hi there
This is not a bug. Click Boxes are invisible by their very nature. They are invisible buttons.
Likely you feel into a trap of sorts. It seems you felt you would need to clear the visible option in order that your user would not see the Click Box.
In reality, clearing this option simply removes it from the slide during playback. Perhaps you are using Variables and Advanced Actions. Maybe you are making a game of sorts. You wish to allow clicking on a certain area, but having no action when the click occurs. UNTIL you click another area to make this one finally "clickable". You would accomplish this by using the Advanced Actions and Variables and turning visibility off and on. So when the user clicked another area, the action turned on visibility for the Click Box that was formerly hidden. And if the user clicked before and nothing happened, they click this time and see an action occur.
Make sense? I hope so. If no, perhaps I can toss together a small demo to show you.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Captivate advances when wrong click box is clicked

I have a simple slide with 5 weblinks. I need the slide to stay on screen until a user clicks a specific button to continue but that allows them to select any of the others (weblinks) before doing so - this is what I setup...
    - Clickboxes were arranged for each website reference on the slide and were set up to open a new window with the webpage URL. They were not set to pause until user clicks as they should allow the slide audio to continue until done. They are also all set in the URL drop down to allow the project to continue. This seems to work fine on its own with the slide audio continuing as the user selects the webpages they want to check and the screen remained after audio completed. Perfect.
    - Good so far. Now I add a button and a click box but this time set it to pause until the user clicks and set an appropriate caption. I expect it to do just that and all is well unless the slide playtime ends. If the slide has reached the end of its play time (approx 17sec) and ANY click area is clicked the presentation continues. So, regardless of whether the continue click box is clicked or and of the weblink clickboxes are, the project advances and continues playing the next slide.
Captivate does not seem to be able to discern WHICH box is clicked but I do not want the advance to occur until the user clicks this box.
Am I missing something - hopefully? This seems basic.
(this is in Captivate 5, latest release v5.0.1.624)

Issues like this make a very regular appearance on this forum. In most cases they can be easily resolved by correctly timing the pause point of relevant clickboxes and buttons, or by adjusting the pause behaviour (turning it off or on).
You need to remember that Captivate slides are not like web pages.  They're really movies playing at 30 frames per second.  They don't sit still like a web page does.
If you can't get the desired behaviour via timing or tuning of your clickbox/button settings, the other option you have is to use Event Handler widgets instead of clickboxes or buttons: http://www.infosemantics.com.au/catalog/widgets/interactive/wdgt_event_handler_01
You can use as many of them as you want on the same slide.  They have options to disable Pause or Disable Continue, depending on what playback effect you're trying to accomplish.

  • How to make page continue after all click boxes have been clicked (CP6)

    Hi,
I have a standard non quiz hotspot page in my course. I want this page to continue to show a final animation once the learner has clicked all click boxes on screen.
At the moment, I have set up Advanced Actions to make the click boxes show the relevant information successfully. I have also set up an array which tells the page to continue once all the click boxes have been clicked, however the page does not continue until the user clicks on the page again AFTER clicking all the click boxes.
    Why is this happening?
    Thanks

Lilybiri, I had problem with advanced actions and you helped me a great deal with your skills and your template for reusing.
I will try to explain the best I can, If there are 3 buttons on a slide, and when each one is clicked: they assign some variable from 0 to 1, conditional action says if all assigned variables are 1 then do action for that slide, slide action can be: show 4th button (initially invisible) for example. That 4th button will be visible only if you proceed to some other slide by clicking one of those first 3 buttons (via jump to slide), and when you navigate back to that initial slide 4th button will be visible. This was the only way for me to show 4th button which is initially invisible on a slide with conditional actions. Standard actions works just fine: you click something and assigned action is performed. But, again for conditional actions slide needs to be reloaded.  For me it works only this way otherwise nothing happens on a slide when I have situation like this (with conditional actions). This is why I have replied in this way since I have recognized my problem. Am I wrong? And yes, event is triggered on slide Enter.
