Suggestion for better Multi Tasking

The Multitasking isn't what it should be.
It is quite a hassle to quit every app separately. And it seems to drain the battery life quickly.
So I have a few suggestions:
In the settings, add the possibility of giving the amount of apps that can be opened for multi tasking. So if you set this to e.g. 4, only the last 4 apps will stay open.
In the settings add the possibility of defining which apps can run for multi tasking and which apps should close immediately, so they will not be used as multi tasking.
Add the possibility of closing all open apps in one action e.g. by adding a button for this in the multi tasking bar.
If someone has other suggestions, please add them to this discussion item

Just because an app is available in the multi-task bar does not mean the app is running in the background. This is also a recently used app list to quickly select an app that may not be launched.

  • Design Suggestions for Multiple DaqMX Task Streaming App?

I'm working on a LabVIEW application in which I'm streaming high-speed data to disk from multiple PXI devices simultaneously.  Each device has its own DaqMX task, and all tasks stream to the same file.  The PXI device configuration (which devices are in the chassis, which slots they're in, and which channels to read from each device) is determined at runtime.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a design model for this?  To make matters worse, I'd like to be able to specify a channel to monitor its data during the streaming.  I'm thinking the Producer-Consumer model is the basic approach, and I'm at the point where I have an array of DaqMX tasks, one for each device.  I could probably extend that array to be an array of clusters containing:
       1) DAQ Command (e.g. Initialize, Start, Stop, Acquire, etc)
       1) Task ID
       2) Control reference to 2-D array (where each DaqMX read can be stored)
       3) Array of channel names (to allow selection of channel to be monitored
This could be passed as notifier data, to a data collection subVI, but the part I'm struggling with is finding the best way to run X number of tasks in parallel, where X is not known until runtime.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the input.  With regards to the file format, the decision has been made by my superiors not to use TDMS - unfortunate, but NI hasn't provided the information to write a MatLab file reader, which is a requirement.  So, I've created a custom file format tailored to the needs of my application, but generic enough to be used for other apps. With it, I've been able to stream 8 channels at 800KHz (4 channels each from 2 PXI-6120s) without breaking a sweat.  However, the performance varies greatly depending on which slots the cards are in (but that's a whole different discussion - see the PXI forum for that one).  Once NI solves that one, I'll feel a lot more comfortable.
I have already made reentrant subVIs that can perform a specific DAQ task.  The problem with a for loop is that the VI sits and wait for a start trigger, then acquires the streaming data.  I can't start the next VI because I'm in the first one.  I thought about creating a data collection VI, and this VI would start up to 6 other VIs in parallel, based on how many and which cards were present.  It's a bit messy, because each slot can contain one of two devices, so I'd need to check which type it was before calling it.  I'm thinking I'll have to create the task list and the references to the data in the main GUI loop, and then pass this using a notifier or queue to the data collection loop.

  • Feedback on Captivate as alternative to Authorware, or suggestions for better alternative?

    Hi -
I've been using Authorware for a number of years to create questionnaires for research studies...and I'm glad it still works on Windows 7 and we're going to test our applications on a Windows-based tablet soon.
But I know I will need to find a new solution for a development tool as technology moves forward.
I've seen suggestions to head towards Captivate.  We purchased a copy and I've been testing it.
I'm learning that Captivate does not support arrays, and will only support a limited number of user-defined variables (although I haven't received a clear answer as to the exact number....but the estimates I was given were really small).  In Authorware, we've created systems that use 3000+ variables using arrays and have had no problems.
From the Captivate forum, I'm learning that it appears that there is not a simple way to export data to a text file on the computer (like Authorware's WriteExtFile and AppendExtFile).  I'm told I need to have an internet connection, and set up a LMS (learning management system).
Our projects are research studies, so we're not grading or scoring...we just need to capture the answers that people provide and write that data to a text file.
Two different people suggested that SurveyMonkey would be the better option.
We would prefer a solution that allows for the creation of a standalone executable file with a nice graphical user interface, audio, easy data handling, and not be required to have an internet connection, etc.
As Authorware users, would any of you have a suggestion for an Adobe (or other) product?  Or should I just learn Captivate and grow with it and hope some better features are added in the future?
    Thanks!
    Scott

Yeah, it'll be a while, I think, before CP is anywhere close to the capabilties of Authorware. If you want the 'ease' of Captivate, you likely have to rethink how your product will work. Overall, filesystem access is going to be a challenge - very little software seems to allow that these days, and understandably so considering security issues.
Lectora may be the best more for you, all that said. I'm not positive they allow filesystem access (write text files) but I think so. It's also not Flash-based, so if you do want to move to mobile delivery without Flash plugin support issues, well, there ya go.
On the other hand, I believe Adobe's AIR product (method of bundling a Flash application for local playback) may now allow filesystem access, so if you can pick up Flash or Flex, publishing to an AIR application may be an option.
OR you could try to get a Flash Widget made that you insert into CP to handle the text file writing, though that doesn't get you around the custom variable limit...
...BUT do note that CP can call JS functions in the parent HTML window, so you might be able to do what you want, as far as variables go, by creating the functions, values, etc. in JS then have CP call those functions...?
All that said, Xerte may be a good option for you. It's got quite an underground (i.e. quiet) following:
    http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/
It's designed to be an Authorware replacement in design and form, though I've not touched it in years so have no idea how far it's progressed (the support listserve is pretty active though).
    And it's free...!

  • Any suggestions for better wifi signal?

    Hi everyone,
So I live in a bit of an older home, and since the walls are pretty thick and everything is compartmentalized, my wifi signal doesn't reach everywhere with the best signal.  Below are the details of my set-up along with additional potentially-relevant information to provide context:
I have FiOS internet with basic cable (just downgraded from FiOS premium cable to save $$$)
The FiOS console is in basement
I have coax cables from the basement console going to: (internet) one router (the MI424WR Verizon FiOS Router) in office, and (cable TV) three TVs - one in the basement, one on 1st floor and one on 2nd floor.
My internet is only 2-3 bars in the location of the TV on the 1st floor.  This is probably where we spend the most time using our devices when I'm not working, and would need the greatest signal boost.
Since I've downgraded to basic cable, I'd like to be able to stream on-line content in the location of the 1st floor TV without too much lag.
It would be very difficult to string an ethernet cable from my current router in the office to another router in the 1st floor TV room.
In the past I've tried relatively cheap [$30] wifi extenders with no help.
I've read a bit about installing a second wireless router, but not sure if I can do it by just splitting the coax going to my 1st floor TV into another wireless router without an ethernet cable from the office-router.  (I'm okay with technology, but am somewhat behind in my understanding of wireless networks).
I'd like to spend less than $100 (assuming I'd need to buy another router - any recommendations?) to do it, if possible.
All suggestions (including non-second router recommendations) are greatly appreciated!!!  Also, details on how to hook up the configuration would be especially welcomed.  Thanks again and have a happy holiday!

    phillyrx wrote:
    Hi jsk2,
Thanks for the suggestion.  No, I haven't tried to move the router to the 2nd floor.  Is that supposed to improve the signal house-wide?  The 2nd floor coax is on the opposite end of the house of the 1st floor coax.
Also, might  be a really stupid question, but can the coax cables be used interchangably?  (ie: the coax for my TV can be used for the router, and the coax for my router can be used for a TV)?
    Thanks!
You don't mention what your tier is but I assume it's under 100mb?
any of the coax connectors can be used for tv AND router by adding a splitter - up to a max of 8 I believe.
Go onto ebay and get a couple of old fios routers and add one on each floor
Of course using ethernet would be a far better coice but I guess that's not an option

  • All suggestions for better reporting solution will be much appreciated!

    Hi there,
I have a requirement (Reports 6i C/S) to print out a number of word documents (stored as BLOBS in a table) and the associated notes data. Here is the table structure
    SQL> desc cip_cases
    Name                            Null?    Type
    CIP_CASE_ID                   NOT NULL NUMBER
    CIP_CASE_REASON_ID              NOT NULL NUMBER(7)
    CIP_ID                          NOT NULL NUMBER
    DATE_ENTERED                    NOT NULL DATE
    ENTERED_BY                      NOT NULL VARCHAR2(30)
    NOTES                                    VARCHAR2(2000)
    CASE_DOCUMENT                            BLOB
    QUEUED_FOR_DELETION                      VARCHAR2(1)
    QUEUED_FOR_DELETION_BY                   VARCHAR2(30)
SQL>Now I can produce a simple report to preview / print the DATE_ENTERED, ENTERED_BY, and NOTES fields and I have developed code to print the BLOB documents in the background using OLE but once the Word docs are printed out there is no way to link them up to the corresponding notes.
Therefore the next most obvious solution (to me anyway) is to print out a single notes record followed by the corresponding word doc, followed by the next notes record and so on and so forth. Then at least they should come out on the printer in the correct order.
It doesn't sound particularly elegant so I was wondering if anyone had a better idea?

I guess no-one has any suggestions then?

  • Suggestions for better router than Airport Extreme?

Just like everyone else, I'm having problems with networking my Mac Pro (Nehalem) to the Airport Extreme router upstairs (fwiw, my G5 PPC tower connected just fine). Anyways, connecting an ethernet cable is not realistic, considering the length of cable going down 2 flights of stairs. So I thought I'd try swapping my router. Can anyone suggest a solid model to try out to get my Mac Pro connected to the internet?

Netgear. And there are signal boosters and repeaters.
No way to run through the wall hidden inside I guess, out of sight and out of the way?
Anyway I have upgraded to latest Netgear wireless ADSL modem/switch along with a router/switch and happy with both.

I have an iPhone 5 16GB, I bought it 2 years ago, and it worked perfectly. I used it with iOS 6 (the best),7 and now 8. Since the moment I upgraded to 8 (Nowadays I'm using it with iOS 8.1.1) the device starts to open the multi-task slowly, it takes about 3 seconds. I don't know what to do.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • What are your impressions of "multi-tasking"?

If you have iOS4 and a capable device, you should have multi-tasking and opened apps appearing in the task bar. Newer app versions are able to run in the background. In my opinion, when I close most apps (by pressing the home button), I want them to close completely, not run in the background. Aside from being a privacy issue, apps in the task bar may use battery power or if truly in a suspended mode, they still take up memory or process capability. In order to really shut them down, two additional home button clicks and then two more screen strokes are required. Not very efficient and probably leading to an earlier home button failure. Why not have some kind of screen command (tap or swipe combination?) to simultaneously shut down all apps in the task bar? The bar itself is useless if you have used many apps in the course of a day. To find what you're looking for, you have to scroll through a long parade of icons. It's a lot easier to just tap the icon where you know it is sitting in the nice folder you created. I don't get it. I realize the bar can be used for switching open apps, but this is really not that big of a deal for the vast majority of apps. Furthermore, there should be an option to enable or disable multi-tasking globally as well as for individual apps. Now that would be an improvement.
    What are your thoughts?

I havent done any kind of multitasking on my ipod touch, im waiting to upgrade my software to the newer one. However, I couldnt agree more with that of pressing the home button many times to perform basic function to switch apps or enable the multitasking ability. I think palm adapted a better design of software than apple ever did with their IOS 4. Palm's webOS can handle full multitasking--something the iPhone can't do. Palm uses what it calls "a deck of cards model" for managing multitasking: You can view each of your open applications at once, shuffle them any way you choose, and then discard the ones you want to close. All of this is done with intuitive gestures that mimic handling a physical deck of cards. Apps remains live, even when minimized into the card view, so changes can continue to happen in real-time, even if you've moved on to another activity.
I had the time to experience a bit of a palm web os software on an AT&T store and my impression on that software is done more elegantly than apple multitasking home pressing button system.
P.S to NYtroutbum: you should definitely present that idea to apple by its feedback product page. Let's hope it listens.

  • Naming Suggestions for Albums

I just had surgery and so have a few weeks to sit at home. I would like to redo all of my albums in iPhoto (about 30,000 pix in three libraries).
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good album naming system? I have used "Thanksgiving 2005" for example in the past but I haven't been consistent. Before I start I thought I would see if any of you have found a surefire system that helps with sorts, etc.
    Thanks for your time!
    Denny

I probably have as many photos as you if not more, but I do not use keywords. Also, since many of my photos are scanned-in snapshots, the dates on many are the date of the scan, not the actual date. It was too daunting a task to redate them all.
My system is purely chronologic. I use iPhotoBuddy to create several separate libraries. My first one contains photos from the 1890's through 1978. It happens to be labeled 1920-1978 because that was the earliest date of my photos until we found the 1800s ones . Each of my libraries contains a maximum of about 6000 photos. I chose that number because the prior versions of iPhoto would get sluggish with more than that, and that size is not too large to work with. I now have 10 libraries; some are just one year, some are 2-3, and some are about 5 years of photos. In the earlier years, without digital cameras, the total number of photos for a year is way less than the current year with many digital photos.
I use albums to keep my photos organized for each year. My main reason for this is that I scanned in the photos at different times. Most of them came from our photo albums......one area of my life that has always been carefully organized. However, I would then run across some photos in picture frames, or other places and had to add them into the proper chronologic position. In the Events, and in the previous Film Rolls, the position of the photos cannot be moved as they can in albums.
I use albums to place each photo in its proper position. When I have finished with the positioning of all the photos for the year, I then number them. (I don't put the exact dates on them; I know they go from Jan to Dec, and from the content it is fairly easy to identify when they were taken. I really don't care if a particular photo was from March 4 or 16....I know it was after Valentine's Day and before Easter!). My numbering system is also very simple. I use 3 or 4 digits depending on how many total photos are in the album. For example, for 1985, my first three photos are: 1985-001, 1985-002, 1985-003. For 2007, my first three photos are 2007-0001, 2007-0002, 2007-0003. Numbering them consecutively keeps them in order when I export them to an external drive as backup or burn them to disks, so I would not have to resort them.
I use my albums when I make my iMovies for each year, so it is crucial for me to have the photos in the correct order chronologically. I make DVDs of each year....some years need 4-6 DVDs for all the activities, photos and videos, but some years are less eventful and I can get all our photos and videos on one DVD.
I do keep my photos in Events, labeled as to what they are, but I use that just for viewing the photos I want to see or show someone. I have a pretty good sense as to which photos are where, so I haven't really needed to make a search for specific photos except one time for a friend's anniversary. When I initially began to scan in my photos, I did put titles on them, but that became tedious and repetitious. I found I wanted to use the same titles for different photos of the same people or places. Keywords were not a part of iPhoto then. Now, my scanner just numbers the photos, so I have numbers on those and the digital ones. I do add descriptions to many of my photos, but I should add keywords as well. I may get to that after I finish my iMovie/DVD projects. I have about 10 more family movies to do first!
Whatever system you chose, it has to be one that works for you. My dad (on a PC)keeps his photos on two different drives and put them into folders by person. He is sorry now that he did it that way because he can't find anything. I helped him resort his more recent photos by date, since he now thinks that might be a better way of organizing. I tried to get him to consider how he thinks of the photos, and his response was that he liked the combination of people and years, so that is what he is using. I wouldn't like it, but it is working for him.

  • Why has Apple decided the 3G won't have mult-tasking with the new OS 4.0

Just would like a answer if apple would re-consider enabling multi-tasking on the iphone 3G when they release OS 4.0, maybe in a limited form.
My experience is the iphone 3G will often leave applications running in the background on OS 3.x and I have to use "freememory" third party app to clean it up when the iphone becomes too slow.
This suggests to me there nothing technical why the 3G can't have multi-tasking as in away it already does do this when the applications aren't closed.
Maybe if they limit the multi tasking to 3 applications on 3G, rather then none out all, this would make me happier.

The developer response as to why FreeMemory no longer available:-
"Apple has demanded that we remove the feature to Free Memory from all our apps. We have decided to remove our existing Free Memory 1.5 and MemoryInfo 1.1 apps from sale. We have instead submitted Free Memory Lite and MemoryInfo Lite without the Free Memory feature."
So I suppose I was lucky to find the tool before Apple banned it.
It is interesting as most iphone's have 8 or 16GB of Storage RAM, but only 128MB 3G, 256 3GS of runtime RAM, and because the phones doesn't have the ability to use virtual RAM, memory is limited on iphone, this would of been a nice feature to add to OS 4.0.
My opinion is Apple decided to limit functionality so people are forced to upgrade to the latest iphone, a little cynical I suppose, but I feel is true.
The release of the OS 4.0 and not providing multi-tasking for the 3G is probably another example as it doesn't really appear to be "technically not feasible".
I feel the developers need a bill of rights, as Apple decisions to "ban" apps is too arbitrary and unfair.
Sorry for my comments about Apple policy of banning apps or limiting functionality it just my opinion, although I think it is shared by many.
To some find my comments harsh but it is in Apple interest to make all iphones the best phones in the world

  • Reinstalling Arch. Need suggestions for older laptop.

    Hello!
Recently I revived my old HP Pavilion zv6000 by buying a $5 charger off of Amazon. It works quite well, surprisingly.
    Specs:
    - AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz CPU
    - ATI Xpress 200M w/ 128 MB dedicated VRAM VGA
    - 512 MB DDR RAM 333 MHz
    - 80 GiB 4200 RPM HDD
Now, right when I got it I installed Arch. I used x86_64, JFS for / and XFCE as my DE. This combination didn't turn out very well. I would run out of usable RAM all the time and would start swapping like crazy, which would eventually lock up my computer and force me to hard reboot. During one of these reboots, I lost several files. Also, I would always have 100% CPU usage in any file operations. From un/archiving things, to just downloading big files, I would always hit 100% CPU usage, reducing my computer to an unusable state. I even tried the 2.6.38 (with the 200-line 'miracle' patch) kernel out of the testing repository, and while this did help with multi-tasking a little bit, my computer was still pretty unusable, sadly. I couldn't go on having it do this. I needed it to be in a semi-usable state.
Anyway, I installed the OEM Windows XP back on it (Ugh...) and it runs really good. Downloading files takes no CPU, and I have enough RAM to function pretty well with Firefox. Unfortunately, I prefer Linux much more then Windows, and I only installed Windows as a stop-gap solution until I figured out my re-installation game-plan. The problem is, I don't know what was wrong with my setup in the first place. I was thinking about falling back to i686 this time, and I will probably use LXDE as my DE instead of XFCE. This should cut down on the RAM usage. I was considering using JFS again, but I have lost my loyalty to it as of late because of the aforementioned problems.
So, I wanted to consult people smarter than I am on this issue. The Arch community seems very helpful. I would like to complement you guys on your fine wiki and distribution. Ever since I've used Arch (about a year ago), I have stuck with it. I am just having a difficult time getting this old-ish machine to run well. I am not expecting too awful much, all I really want to be able to do on it is browse the web with Firefox comfortably, maybe a bit of C/++ coding with Geany, edit some documents using OO.org and listen to music. Kinda like a netbook. An 8 pound netbook.
All recommendations are welcome. Thank you!

Thank you for your suggestions and quick reply Inxsible. I am surprised that you have that machine running well! That gives me some definite hope that I can get this machine running well.
Google Docs is interesting. I did not think of that. I'm not too big on 'cloud' computing, but I do suppose OO.o had gotten hefty lately. I will look into using alternatives to OO.o. Would Abiwod and Gnumeric be a good choice, or would they still be too heavy, do you think?
As far as the file manager goes, I could probably use the command line fairly well, although it's always nice to have a GUI file manager around for certain things. I'll look into XFE. I liked PCManFM the last time I tried it, and it seemed to be very light. I like the fact that it can manage my desktop too.
JFS seemed to perform poorly for me. I will likely follow your suggestion and use ext4.
I really like Firefox, and it'd be very difficult for me to not use it anymore. It's the one thing that I'd have a hard time giving up. This computer will be 90% web browsing, so Firefox is really important to me.
Leafpad looks solid, nice and lightweight. I like Geany as well, having used it a bit lately it seems very fast and lightweight, but has all the features I care about in a development environment.
I'm not too sure about my music player. I will certainly consider deadbeef. I didn't look at it too closely, though it looks really good from what I saw.
