Suggestions for Developers of the Playbook

So after a year of trying to come up with a good reason to buy one, I finally went out and purchased a playbook last week. There are certain things about the device, certain problems, that are not apparent when you're futzing with them in the store. The real problem with the playbook is the complete lack of context menus. All the other blackberry device have it (click the Rim Icon to the left of your touchpad now). The lack of this context menu eliminates an enormous number of functions that would make this device sing. For one...a big one apparently...photos. If there was a context menu in the photos app, you could simply select a folder or a photo and manipulate it, rename it, send it (email, bluetooth, facebook, twitter), print it (that's another feature I'll get to). Pretty much all of the media types on the Playbook could benefit from this.
How do you implement a context menu you might ask...simple...copy what you already have done with the Torch and Bold. Program the OS to show a context menu for an item when a finger is placed and held over said item for an extended period of time.
Rim is touting blackberry devices as tools not toys, but the playbook is neither. It's media apps are not robust enough to compete with toys like the Ipad, it needs a more interfaced connection to social media apps, bluetooth and email, a unified interface for media files and better streaming so it can stream content to smart displays (we have a Smart Tv in our boardroom and I can't get the playbook to share at all...although I'm sure someone will pipe up with a way to do it). It's business connectivity apps are not robust enough to compete with the Blackberry smartphones. This device needs native vpn  and the ability to be able to browse networks, manipulate folders and files easily and natively with context menus, and print...yes...print. It's a no brainer...even my digital camera can print directly to a printer...universal printer drivers exist.
I want a business tablet...Rim is the only company out there promising one. So far the only thing my PB has done well is showcase photo's for a presentation (not to the boardroom display unfortunately) and Angry Birds...which I have wasted entirely to much time playing.

And native power management. Something simple, like a setting to allow the device to warn when it reaches 10% battery and shutdown when it reaches 5%. Within the first three days I was subjected to the no charge-no ability to charge problem.

  • So are we to assume that the preview for developers is the WP 8.1 update intended for Lumia Icon users?  Why is it taking so long for this update to be released?!

Of those of you that have tried out the preview for developers on the Lumia Icon, what issues have you seen from it?  Does it in fact void your warranty?

I have largely given up on this device, I think that I made mistake trying out a Windows phone.  I really miss my Android device and feel like I have made a 2 year mistake.
I don't think you should give up on Windows Phone.  I think you should instead give up on Verizon.  Lets say you had an android device, Verizon could do the same thing and hold up an important update that you're waiting for.  AT&T is much quicker to release Windows Phone updates so you may want to try them next time. For example, you can see on this page Availability in North America - Nokia that AT&T has released the update for their top two phones the 1020 and 1520.  The Verizon icon is almost the same as the Lumia 930 which is the international version.  The 930 has been on Windows Phone 8.1 for many months.  Windows Phone 8.1 has lots of new features including the notification center and Cortana.  It's a shame that Verizon is too lazy, too slow or just doesn't care.  I'm probably going to start installing the developer preview soon and you could do the same.  Basically, you sign up for a free developer account.  Then install the developer preview app to get the updates. Google has no such option for android uses so if Verizon were holding back an android update you'd be worse off.  At least Microsoft gives us a stupid carrier work around...  It's annoying but then you can enjoy your Windows Phone with out having to wait for Verizon whom doesn't care.  They haven't even said a word about it which = worst carrier ever in my opinion.

  • Why is there a 30 day limit for email on the Playbook

Sorry this isn't really a support question but I was wondering if anyone knows why they maintained the maximum 30 day limit on email etc for the Playbook.  I kinda understand the logic for a phone (although it would be nice to have the option of all my mail) but I use my playbook differently and really need all my mail not just the last 30 days.

Thanks so much for the best of all of your choice by email again then we will not receive this email is not responsible or so of this tag only one I have been the best time for your help and the next level of risk from you again and learn how much you owe.
Yep, the above is seekrit code explaining the why part. If I tell more they might harm me.
    Enjoy the playbook.

  • Suggestions for structure of the business package content

    Hello gurus,
We have imported CRM business package into our portal. We have about 6 departments in our organization and we have identified about 15 roles for all these departments. But the content going into these 15 different roles is more or less the same except for few of the BW reports, which can be different for different depts and diff roles.
Could anybody give suggestion as to how I need to create portal content structure to manage the content in a better way?
    Points guaranteed for useful suggestions.
    Thanks much in advance,

  • Suggestions for Fios in the New Year

I posted this over on DSL reports too, but figured this was a good place to make the suggestions as well.  I'd love some reaction from the folks who work at Fios.
    1. Ditch FYI and find someone better to provide the guide data.
    2. Add NASA-TV.  NASA-TV is now starting to provide some programming in HD and I think it would be a big draw.
    3. Create a new category of english language news channels from around the world.  I'd love to get news from CBC, Sky News and several others.  (you can find a bunch of them on http://www.livenewscameras.com)
    4. Make FSN provide a full-time HD feed.  Right now, it goes to an SD test pattern when HD programming is not on the air.  There's no reason they couldn't offer all the FSN programming on this channel with the side bars when HD is not on.
    5. Create a channel to advertise the latest features and programming on Fios.  I say this because we so often have to find out things here on this forum.  It would be nice if they'd tell us directly.  I'm not sure what their original idea for Fios 1 was, but it has yet to be rolled out to most markets. Maybe they could make channel 1 just such a channel.
    6. Fix the message light on the set top box.  The light never comes on when there's a message in the message center.  It always did when I had comcast.  I can't believe they can't figure out how to fix this.
    7. Streamline their websites.  In looking up information from Verizon regarding Fios, I have found I usually have to look at 3 or 4 websites to get it all.  There should be one website you go to for all your needs when you sign up with Fios.  I'm sure they'll tell you that's the case - but that has not been my experience.  There are a lot of good features of Fios that are online. (games, NFL network stuff, the ESPN360 access, etc)  They need to advertise this better.  It'll draw and keep subscribers if they do.
    8. Add an HD only tier.  Give people who want it the option of only watching HD programming for much less than they pay for the full Fios service. It would be pretty simple, if Fios has an HD channel, you get it on this tier.  That would include all the movie channels.  It would not include the NHL center ice channel or some of the other pay per view things.  Offer 100+ HD channels for 50-75 bucks or so and I think you would get quite a few takers even if that meant they couldn't get any SD programming.

    1. Ditch FYI and find someone better to provide the guide data.
I can only say that a lot of the info from ESPN this past weekend was totally invalid.
    2. Add NASA-TV.  NASA-TV is now starting to provide some programming in HD and I think it would be a big draw.
OH YEAH I'm ALL FOR THIS
    3. Create a new category of english language news channels from around the world.  I'd love to get news from CBC, Sky News and several others.  (you can find a bunch of them on http://www.livenewscameras.com)

Any HD feed any provider gets is from the actual channel so if they aren't broadcasting in it we won't get it. They also have to send it to us so that we can put it on the channel.
    5. Create a channel to advertise the latest features and programming on Fios.  I say this because we so often have to find out things here on this forum.  It would be nice if they'd tell us directly.  I'm not sure what their original idea for Fios 1 was, but it has yet to be rolled out to most markets. I am going to look into this.
    6. Fix the message light on the set top box.  The light never comes on when there's a message in the message center.  It always did when I had comcast.  I can't believe they can't figure out how to fix this.
I just go into the message box and remove the messages however if they are still there I'd try a powercycle. I don't have this problem on any box at my house
I'm gonna say yes in regards to this but I think the services is what will keep subscribers the most and could keep more if they were steamline I'm a Yes/eh on this one.
I'd Prefer not to pay extra for HD content and have it provided automatically
    Kudos! Thanks!

  • Trying to set up my brand new MacBook Pro and it does not connect with the wifi network I have selected for this purpose. Nothing wrong with the wifi as both my iPad and iPhone are happily connected. Suggestions for connecting to the wifi network accepted

Setting up my brand new MacBook Pro and it will not connect to the wifi network. Nothing wrong with the network which is happily working for my iPhone and iPad! Suggestions accepted for making this connection.

Fixing this is a two step process:
    1) System preferences > WiFi/Airport ...
... check [√] Ask to join new networks
"Known networks will be joined automatically.
If no known networks are available, you will
be asked before joining a new network."
    2) Remove unwanted networks from the list of "known" networks under
    System preferences > WiFi/Airport > (Advanced) > | Airport/WiFi pane ...
Close the window and save changes. If no joy, do a restart to ensure you are playing under the new rules.

  • Suggestion for developers of Safari

I switch back and forth from Safari to Chrome but have spent much more time on Safari. There is a feature in Chrome that I think would be useful to Safari users. There is a new tab link at the end of the url window. If, in Chrome, I want to open a bookmark, I can just drag the bookmark title to that tab link and the page opens. In Safari, as far as I know, the only quick way to bring up a different bookmark is to press "control T". Which requires an extra step. In Chrome, I don't have to do anything other that drag with the cursor.

I hate to be the one to inform you that the N9 and Meego have both reached the end of the line. One of my all time favourite phones and still using mine daily but just biding time before I call time on it.

  • I recently replaced the hard drive in my computer.  I am afraid to download and reinstall itunes again because I worry about losing all the music I had on my iPod Nano.  Any suggestions for solutions?

I recently replaced the hard drive in my computer.  I am afraid to download and reinstall itunes again because I worry about losing all the music I had on my iPod Nano.  Any suggestions for solutions?

    The dragging does not work:
    - Transfer iTunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - For other music you will need a third-party program like one of those discused here:
    Copy music
    - Connect the iPod to your compouter and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up.
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Nothe that the backup that iTunees makes does not include synced media like apps nd music.

  • Drive setup suggestion for multiple users editing simultaneously?

At work here, a city college, not a professional company or broadcast studio, so resources are limited, we often have three people editing HDV content simultaneously in Final Cut Pro.
Keeping the content on our multiple backup servers, there's simply too much network traffic to do this smoothly.
Instead of keeping projects locally spread across multiple machines, I would like one centralized place for everything, for the Macs to access directly over gigabit or something else.
So, what kind of setup do you guys suggest for this?
The machines here are two quad-core G5s (no RAID or fiber-channel right now), and a Core2Duo iMac, F400 only.
Again, it'd need to be able to handle three HDV projects going on simultaneously without skipping due to having to seek back and forth all over the drive.
    Thanks.

Yes, an XSan system would perfectly fit the bill for what you want to do, but an XSAN is not a cheap solution. When it is all said and done, it will cost you tens of thousands of dollars.
The best, cheap solution would be to use Firewire drives. I would not duplicate a project onto three drives, because you will then always be trying to figure out which version is the most current. Instead, keep all of your project, capture scratch and render files on the firewire drives. Then move the drive to whichever computer you want to do the editing on.
Properly log & capture all your footage, then archive all your project files, because Firewire hard drives will fail over time, loosing all the info on the discs. I did say this was the cheap solution. "Cheap" does have its costs…

  • Suggestions For Lightroom

The first change Adobe should make for the improvement of Lightroom is this Forum. I personally find this forum extremely difficult to navigate. It's cluttered, difficult to read and seemingly archaic compared to the Apple Forums.
Here are my others suggestions for Lightroom:
-Allow the ability to select Quick Collection images and Delete them from the disk not just Remove them from the quick collection. The benefit here would be that we could select images from several different folders that might be of the same subject/situation that had been loaded at a different time but still are similar images to others in the collection. This would allow us to clean up redundant images from any number of different folders. Presently when we select Quick Collection images and hit delete it just removes them from the Quick collection leaving them on the hard drive. I want an option to get rid of them from the hard drive.
-When trying to move images from bottom of a gallery to the top of a gallery and there are hundreds of images, grabbing the ones to move up, when getting to the edge of the gallery, the gallery doesnt move consistently.
-When in the compare mode it would be nice to have the file name below each image in the bar that contains the Star rating and pick or reject flag.
-When in the survey mode it would be helpful to differentiate the X & / more effectively. Why not highlight the X in Red and leave the / the color that it is.
-Include a Preference option that allows us to always have the Spell Check enabled when a catalog is opened. Presently you have to continually remember to turn this feature on each time a catalog is opened.
-Spell check does not ignore when I select the Ignore option. Seems to be a bug
-When I select Check Spelling it comes up with the spell check box, up comes the suspect word. I click ignore and nothing happens, I select Next and nothing happens. Bug?
-Would be nice if P-Picks and X-Rejects could be toggled on and off with the corresponding key.
-when loading images from a camera card you have the option to have it load to folders. Presently it loads images to folders, dating those folders by the day the images were shot. It would be nice to be able to tell the loading procedure to create folders by the day images are imported.
-When loading images from camera card you can select a secondary destination. I would like to see the secondary destination look identical to the first destination. Not something completely different as it is now.
-When using the sequential numbering optin for renaming files on import, the last number in the sequence should be remembered by lightroom and the next import should take off where the last import ended. Photo Mechanic works like this as well as Nikon View and Picture Project.
-Is there a way to see more than one line of the caption in the Grid/thumbnail mode? If not that would be beneficial.
-When you select flags and rejects are hidden or shown, currently the grid view goes back to the top of the file/grid. It would be nice if the grid view would stay at the current selection
-would be nice if during the input of captions, while in the minimal Metadata mode, that the main Metadata window would scroll down as you type a long caption. Presently when a caption goes beyond the window at the bottom of the Metadata pane you have to stop and scroll the Metadata/caption pane down to see what you are typing.
-I change metadata in MS Expression and tell it to synch with original NEF. It does which you can see by taking the same image into Photoshop and looking at the metadata there. However, the same metadata does not synch in Lightroom even though I have save to XMP enabled..
-Bug? Going from Grid view to D-Develop. Adjust the exposure and Lightroom hangs up. Have to Force Quit LR to get it back.

Six changes that would be basic improvements - sorry if these look like bug reports, but they have lasted through all the updates and upgrades and I consider them to be overripe for improvement.
For mouse-heavy users it would be helpful to have a Grid icon in the toolbar in the Develop module, the same as appears in the Library module.
The consistency of having a Done button in all places that present a secondary work screen would make leaving those screens simpler.
When organizing folders, keeping the focus local after a Delete would be good, instead of the focus jumping up to a higher level as it does, requiring a search for your location. If you're making a lot of changes this can be time-consuming and frustrating. I know some other program do this, but not all and it's solvable.
When moving a folder of files, the last file doesn't get moved and could wind up in some random place if you don't suspect this and go after it to move it by itself. This seems to be unique to Lightroom.
In leaving Compare, it's not clear which image you're keeping because the filename isn't visible, only the rating (if used). Changing the rating to exit can disable the Done button. To get it back it shouldn't be necessary to swap the images. Why not use a more standard release action like the Escape key?
In LR 3.3, when using the noise reduction slider the option to update the whole filmstrip to use version 2010 is available only if the demonstration "compare" screen is retained with a box checked. If you uncheck that box, there's no way to get that screen back the next time, so the option to update to 2010 for the whole filmstrip at once is gone and subsequently requires one-by-one clicking to update. This could be simpler and faster.
I use LR every day and teach it, but I may have missed something so forgive my naming ills that have already been mentioned. Thanks for listening. DKD

  • Apple watch hardware availability for developers

    Hi All,
I want to develop for Apple watch and was wondering if the hardware was available for developers before the actual launch.
I have already got the WatchKit SDK and all, but wanted to test on a real hardware piece.
    With Best Regards
    Adarun

We are just users here. Apple is not present. We can't answer your question. If you are a paid developer there is a paid class from which you can purchase hardware at reduced prices. Nothing is free for regular developers.
