Suggestions on DV Converters

Hello,
Our post-production facility at work is set OUT from a JVCDVM600U (DV/DVD deck) IN a TV monitor that is a good set-up for capture and tape review. I'm used to see the work through a larger TV monitor while I edit.
The mirror effect I can achieve with the existing VGA S-composite adapter is of no use. It seems we need a DV converter. Also available all kinds of other cables (from RCA's BM's, UHF's eta). Any suggestions on how to go about it? a particular DV converter you favor?
Thanks,
-nefeli

Nefeli,
When you are editing in FCE you can display the video on an external monitor (or TV) by using a converter box like the Canopus. You connect the converter to one of the FireWire ports on your Mac and to the video-in of your monitor or TV (like this: Mac -> Firewire port -> Converter -> External Video Monitor). When you play the video on the FCE timeline you will be able to see the 'real' quality of your video on your external monitor.
Using the miniVGA adapter is a completely different matter. It only lets you show your computer display on an external monitor or TV, so you would see your entire Mac Desktop, not just your video. The quality is not very good.

  • Any suggestions on MTS converters?

    I'm attempting to edit with some MTS video files originally shot on a Sony video camera.  I would like to transfer them to MOV files at the very least and hopefully to 720P Apple Pro Rez 422 files at best.  Are there any suggestions for a MTS converter that can achieve that?  I have not found anything on the web that is anywhere as good as Mpeg Streamclip but if there is I'd like to know about it.
    Mac Book Pro OSX 10.6.8   FCP 7
    MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.53 GHz), Mac OS X (10.6.8)
    I posted this in FCPX too and got some backlash and a suggestion: Clip Wrap.  If there are any others I would appreciate it.

    Have ever you tried this MTS Converter and this powerful video converter

  • Need High quality fla to dvd playable file converter

    Hi,
    I'm making a project in swf which has got audio, video and images. I need to release this project in flash format and DVD format also.
    Could anyone suggest me any High quality fla to dvd converter ? I just used trial versions of Moyea and few others before deciding to buy but they don't convert in high quality.
    Even if they do, The file size becomes really too big. For instance just a 10 mb file becomes 4 gb.
    Please suggest some good converters.
    Thanks.

    Did you render the Timeline fully?
    Just so you'll know, the Viewer in FCE/FCP is just that; a viewer that shows the image at it's native resolution. The Canvas (and Firewire output) shows the image at the Sequence resolution - not the original resolution of the image.
    If you're not going to be pushing in to (zooming in) the image, you should resize the images so they're close to your Sequence resolution. For example, if you're working in an NTSC DV Sequence, the resolution will be 720x480 (rectangular pixels). If your images are much larger than that, it may be part of the problem.

  • New issue with blank frame at end of coverted .avi

    Here is the project (scenario details):
    I have 2 .swf files. Both are 30 fps. Call them "chapter1" and "chapter2". Frame count is 3600 and 9600 respectfully. The last frame of "chapter1" contains the same image as the first frame of "chapter2" - basically I'm splitting up an overall animation so I can easier manage two Flash documents versus one large document. I used SoThink SWF Converter to create 2 .avi files. When I place these .avi files back to back on the same timeline in Encore, both .avi files have an extra blank frame at the end. This causes a black frame flicker between the end of "chapter1" and the beginning of "chapter2". Even if I drag the end of the .avi on the timeline to the left (as to trim the video track), I still see a black, empty frame at the end. I don't think the problem is with SoThink because I've even imported these .avi files into Sony Vegas and zoomed in all the way to the end of each video track and the very last frame of both files is as it should be. This leads me to believe the issue is with Encore somewhere. Also, initially the problem in Encore was the audio tracks were extending a few frames beyond the video track thus causing the back to back .avi files to align according to the audio track (which was leaving a few blank frames from the video track). I have included some screen shots of the last 3 frames of "chapter1" and the first frame of "chapter2". Hopefully the images below appear in progression as I attached them. Watch the timeline indicator. One frame before the end of "chapter1" is black. I've run out of troubleshooting ideas. I can't imagine this would have anything to do with the .swf being 30 fps and the Encore timeline being DV NTSC 29.97 fps.

    Stan - thanks for the reply...
    I don't recall what was covered when you posted the similar question earlier:
    Not much more than me explaining the flicker between 2 .avi files, and the only response was someone telling me to just have one .swf file. I'm not sure why some people's response is to "just do it a different way" instead of trying to figure out what is causing the issue.
    What does mediainfo or gspot show about the avis?
    I'm not sure which information you need, but I will attach what I was able to get out of the problematic .avi. Let me know if you need different information. This was the first time I used MediaInfo.
    Without knowing what to look for, I did notice a couple of lines that caught my eye. Line 25 mentions 30 fps frame rate (which I imagine is this .avi). Line 26 mentions 25 fps as the original fps (which makes me wonder if SoThink misread the .swf file as 25 fps instead of 30 fps) - not sure if I'm reading this right. Also, lines 45 & 52 mention a 26ms delay in audio (relative to video). Could that be why the audio track in Encore extends a couple of frames beyond the video track? Either way, Vegas is STILL showing the last frame as filled with the image. What does this report tell you? Maybe I should find a different way to export .swf to video. Is there anything else out there I might try (to see if the problem is SoThink)? Just looked at the .avi in PremierePro. The last frame looks fine. SoThink won't let me convert .avi to 29.97 fps.
    Could the fact I have a 30 fps .avi placed into a 29.97 fps project timeline, could this be the issue? I tested another .avi (from a movie), and the last frame appears correctly in Encore. Now this looks as if the issue is back to SoThink's conversion to 30 fps. I really should find a different .swf to video converter and retest. Again, thanks for any help (from anyone) in this and suggesting alternative video converters.
    *added - the .swf files contain tweened and frame by frame animation along with a streamed audio layer, but even when I completely remove the audio layer, the resulting .avi still shows up as a blank frame at the end. I thought at one point the fact I had a streaming layer of audio might have been forcing the frames in Flash to skip around, but this wasn't the case.

  • Copying video to iTunes

    I have videos that are not recognized by iTunes such as mpeg-2 files. Is there a way to get those into iTunes? The iTunes help talks about converting files into files that my iPod touch can read but how do I get those files into iTunes?

    iTunes cannot play MPEG-2 files. You'll need to convert them, and any other files that don't meet the requirements for iTunes:

    If you search this forum for "video convert", you should find a number of threads with suggestions on video converters.

  • I have a 1st Gen Time Capsule 1tb. It turns on, boots up and turns green for 5-10 mins, but then turns solid orange and then blinks orange.  I have removed the hard drive and replaced the power supply . . . still the same problem.  Suggestions?

    I purchased a used 1st Gen Time Capsule with a 1 tb hard drive.
    When I plugged it in and did the initial setup, it worked fine, but gave me a hard drive error.  A few minutes later the green light turned solid orange, then blinking orange, then the status light went off.  The lights in back stayed on.
    I removed the hard drive and rebooted, it turned green for 5-10 minutes then reverted back to a solid orange, blinking orange, then went off.
    Next I purchased a remanufactured internal power supply, and installed it (without the hard drive in).  It turned green almost immediately.  After about 15-20 minutes, I decided to try to install the hard drive again, booted it up, and tried to erase the hard drive with was working properly according to the software.  It stopped erasing the disc after about 20 minutes and turned solid orange again, then blinking, then no status light  (but back lights were still lit).
    I'm a bit flabbergasted at this point, any suggestions on what to do next?  I think i've pretty much replaced everything except the logic board, but can't seem to find any information on the symptoms of a logic board malfunction.
    Thanks!!!!!!!

    A Gen3 is identical board to a Gen4 although they have some differences in firmware and wireless card was updated on every model.. but a Gen3 is substantially faster than Gen1, Gen2 which also have identical boards.
    You can with careful shopping get a Gen3 pretty cheap.
    Most use a delta power supply which I think is a lot better than the flextronics used in most Gen1/2
    You can sell back the parts to ebay.. people still would buy the power supply etc. Even just the case can be useful to a repairer.
    But if the board is gone.. it is hard to repair.. not impossible.. but hard.
    Gen 3 and Gen 4 are not without faults.
    See this page.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/new-issue-with-a1355-gen-3-tc
    I have fixed it a different way.. by using the small converters you can buy in bulk from ebay for $1 each.. KIS3R33 .. they produce 3.3V at 2A peaking at 3A.. amazing.. I keep using them to replace onboard power converters by removing the inductor and simply power directly.. the end result has worked great. You can simply change the resistors around and get any output from 1v to 20v depending on input.
    Is it worth doing it .. no of course not.. it will waste many more hours than $50 is worth.. but it is kind of fun that you can actually make things work again.
    Here is a pic of the Gen 3 totally powered by me. All onboard power removed.
    This was to track down the fault in the Gen3.. but I am kind of pleased that it ended up neat enough and reliable enough to work for more than a year.. the Gen3 still serves as a way to get Netflix via network for a friend running 24/7.
    The units supply (from left to right)
    1v, 1.1v, 3.3v, 5v, 1.8v
    It is feed by 12v supply which is also directly connected to the hard disk.
    So it is possible to fix.. !! Only got to be a bit crazy.

  • Mojarra doesn't implement setting properties on declared converters?

    Hi,
    I tried to register a custom converter in faces-config, by means of the following declaration:
    <converter>
              <description>Formats a number with exactly two fractional digits.</description>
              <converter-id>numberformat.two</converter-id>
              <converter-class>javax.faces.convert.NumberConverter</converter-class>
              <property>
                   <property-name>maxFractionDigits</property-name>
                   <property-class>java.lang.Integer</property-class>
                   <default-value>2</default-value>
              </property>
              <property>
                   <property-name>minFractionDigits</property-name>
                   <property-class>java.lang.Integer</property-class>
                   <default-value>2</default-value>
              </property>
         </converter>I've used this kind of code before a long time ago when using MyFaces, and this always Just Worked. However, with Mojarra it just doesn't work.
    I used the converter on my view like this:
    <h:outputText value="#{bb.someVal}">
         <f:converter converterId="numberformat.two"/>
    </h:outputText>By putting a breakpoint in javax.faces.convert.NumberConverter, I can check that the converter is being called, but the properties just aren't set on the instance.
    I hunted the Mojarra source code, but I also can't find any code that is supposed to set these properties.
    For instance, the ApplicationImp.createConverter method consists of this code:
    public Converter createConverter(String converterId) {
            if (converterId == null) {
                String message = MessageUtils.getExceptionMessageString
                    (MessageUtils.NULL_PARAMETERS_ERROR_MESSAGE_ID, "convertedId");
                throw new NullPointerException(message);
            Converter returnVal = (Converter) newThing(converterId, converterIdMap);
            if (returnVal == null) {
                Object[] params = {converterId};
                if (logger.isLoggable(Level.SEVERE)) {
                    logger.log(Level.SEVERE,
                            "jsf.cannot_instantiate_converter_error", converterId);
                throw new FacesException(MessageUtils.getExceptionMessageString(
                    MessageUtils.NAMED_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND_ERROR_MESSAGE_ID, params));
            if (logger.isLoggable(Level.FINE)) {
                logger.fine(MessageFormat.format("created converter of type ''{0}''", converterId));
            return returnVal;
        }So without all the error checking, the method basically boils down to just this:
    return (Converter) newThing(converterId, converterIdMap);The heart of newThing consists of this:
    try {
                result = clazz.newInstance();
            } catch (Throwable t) {
                throw new FacesException((MessageUtils.getExceptionMessageString(
                      MessageUtils.CANT_INSTANTIATE_CLASS_ERROR_MESSAGE_ID,
                      clazz.getName())), t);
            return result;So there's no code that's supposed to set these properties in sight anywhere.
    Also the converter tag (com.sun.faces.taglib.jsf_core.ConverterTag) nor any of its base classes seems to contain such code.
    Either I'm doing something very wrong, or Mojarra has silently removed support for setting properties on custom converters, which would seem awkward.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    rlubke wrote:
    Mojarra has never supported such functionality, so it hasn't been silently removed.Thanks for explaining that. Like I said, the silently removed option thus was the less likely of the two ;)
    The documentation for this converter sub-element states:
    <xsd:element name="property"
    type="javaee:faces-config-propertyType"
    minOccurs="0"
    maxOccurs="unbounded">
    <xsd:annotation>
    <xsd:documentation>
    Nested "property" elements identify JavaBeans
    properties of the Converter implementation class
    that may be configured to affect the operation of
    the Converter.  This attribute is primarily for
    design-time tools and is not specified to have
    any meaning at runtime.
    </xsd:documentation>
    </xsd:annotation>
    </xsd:element>
    That documentation is quite clear indeed. I now notice that the project I was working on still had a JSF 1.1 faces-config DTD, and that documentation said this:
    Element : property
    The "property" element represents a JavaBean property of the Java class represented by our parent element.
    Property names must be unique within the scope of the Java class that is represented by the parent element,
    and must correspond to property names that will be recognized when performing introspection against that
    class via java.beans.Introspector.
    Content Model : (description*, display-name*, icon*, property-name, property-class, default-value?,
    suggested-value?, property-extension*)So there it actually says nothing about the design time aspect.
    I do have to mention that I think this entire difference between design time and run time could maybe have been a bit more officially formalized. Don't get me wrong, I think JSF and the whole of Java EE is a really good spec that has helped me tremendously with my software development efforts, but this particular thing might be open for some improvements. A similar thing also happens in the JPA spec, where some attributes on some annotations are strictly for design time tools and/or code generators, but it's never really obvious which ones that are.
    More on topic though, wouldn't it actually be a good idea if those properties where taken into account at run-time? That way you could configure a set of general converters and make them available using some ID. In a way this wouldn't be really different in how we're configuring managed beans today.

  • Format bpt needs conversion to mpeg-2 so it can be used in idvd, any suggestions ? Also, it has been stated that some Mac OX'S need a download to read bot format. I have Mountain Lion 8.5

    I have downloaded "Photo Theater Slideshow Movie Maker" from Apple. The format is if bpt, this is not recognized by idvd. the program does alllow a DVD to be created, but only one (1) To use idvd, several movies can be put on a DVD. Therefore, I need to get this bpt format converted to mpeg-2.   Any suggestions ? I have "Prsim" & "iskysoft", neither of these converters recognize the bpt format.

    Export your Photo Theater project to .mov, which is QuickTime.  The PhotoTheater documentation indicates it can export to multiple formats, including .mov.  Import the resulting .mov file into iDVD.
    iDVD, Toast and similar DVD authoring tools are normally what encode video to MPEG-2, which is the codec used on playable DVDs.

  • Suggestion for Moderators

    Just a suggestion but how about putting a 'sticky' thread at the top of this forum as an FAQ?
    e.g. link to documentation can be found HERE... Download the application HERE...
    Common issues which keep being raised (like the agent test only performing a ping).
    Common explanations like how Controller (OLT), Agents and Test Manager are interlinked (and how OpenScript can be used for both functional and load testing).
    I only mention this as this forum does seem to be getting a lot busier recently (certainly moreso than 2-3 years ago) and common threads are starting to appear.
    Maybe have a "Newcomers Start Here" thread? I know what it's like to be a n00bie and get pointed to threads where people have asked EXACTLY the same thing (just worded differently).

    This is indeed very difficult to grasp. I wish someone, somewhere would write up the definitive answers to what’s going on.
    Here’s my take (I could be totally wrong and would love some clarification):
    1. You import a RAW file. That’s a Master and it can’t be touched. Of course, this is true in a lot of RAW converters. The RAW data is used to render an actual color image. I would then call that a Version. Sound OK?
    2. You import a PSD file. That’s a Master (again, Aperture doesn’t touch it, although it could). I’m under the impression that if you try to do anything to that PSD file, a Version is made for the edit to be applied. Sound OK? Note, I think this and all versions are actual full sized, pixel based PSDs. With RAW, multiple Versions are instruction sets to be used to build a true pixel based file IF you export that data (or Open with External Editor). Is that correct?
    3. The reason Layered files are not working as many would like is that while the Master PSD (with layers in this example) is inside the Library, as soon as you wish to work with it, a Version is made and the result is the Version is a flattened copy (this doesn’t have to be but it is). Sound OK?
    3A. Apparently if you option drag the layered Master into a different album, it is copied with layers intact. From there, I think you can alter it and retain layers.
    How we tell Masters from Versions seems a bit unclear. Apparently if you open a Master in Photoshop (the result of course is a Version), you get the bullseye.

  • .mov to Xvid? Any recommended converters?

    I need to convert a .mov to Xvid encoded MPEG with an .avi file extension.
    So far, only a program called iSkySoft Video Converter seems to have the capability, but I wanted to see if the community had any suggestions on other availabe converters.
    Thank you!

    Wondershare makes something called Video Converter Ultimate only $59. I use it all the time, and it does exactly what you want it to do. You pick your source (in your case the DVD disk), and then what you want the output to be. In your case you would just choose the preset for the iPod Classic. It works really well, and is really easy. Note though that it rips your movies into one continuous video file, with no chapter markers. Not sure if this is even possible in any video file playable on an iPod.
    In any case, I feel like Video Converter Ultimate is a steal for 59 bucks. It basically converts any video to any other video format you want. I've used it to convert .avi files that came from a Windows computer as well.

  • Using Custom Converters with Custom Components?

    Hi,
    I have written a Custom component. I wanted to attach Custom Converters and Custom Validators to this component.
    <custom:comp1 id="test" rendered="true" size="20" value="#{bean1.val}"/>
    I have written the following code in Custom Component class
    public class CustomComponent1 extends UIInput{
    public CustomComponent1(){
    super();
    setConverter(new CustomConverter());
    Converter converter = getConverter();
    if(converter == null){
    addValidator(new CustomValidator());
    @Override
    public String getFamily(){
    return "CCFamily";
    The Validator is working fine, but the converter is not. Please suggest.

    I have tried like this as well as we do for a standard component.
    <<faces-config.xml>>
    <converter>
    <description>
    Converter for credit card
    numbers that normalizes
    the input to a standard format
    </description>
    <converter-id>LongConverter</converter-id>
    <converter-class>
    com.wellpoint.converter.CustomConverter
    </converter-class>
    </converter>
    <custom:comp1 id="test" rendered="true" size="20" value="#{bean1.val}">
    <f:converter converterId="LongConverter"/>
    </custom:comp>
    But, this also did not work for me. Please suggest.

  • Need GUI "plan of attack" suggestions

    I'm looking for suggestions on going about a chess board gui. I want this to look nice, not cheaply done, since it will be used with several different side projects I am beginning to work on such as an correspondance chess client and notation converters.
    I would prefer the pieces to be "drag and drop", all ideas are fine with me though. Resizeable is also desired.
    I wasn't sure what the best way to go about it was as far as having many panels, or one big canvas, etc, etc. I haven't dealt with drag and drop with java before, so i'm really not sure what the best things to use are as far as the inner work or even the best type of images for it. Any suggestions will help.
    A board functioning much like the one from games.yahoo.com/ch would be best.
    It needs to be able to have custom positions built as well, and scroll through to earlier parts of the game, and possibly through different branches.
    Any GUI experts out there know a good way of tackling this side of the project?

    I'd probably make a GridLayout of panels. You can use a MouseListener
    to tell which panel you're over for picking up/moving pieces. You can render
    pieces as images on top of the panel, and drag/drop similarly to:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/2d/images/doublebuffering.html
    When they drop a piece, you can ask the listener what cell you're over,
    erase your floating image, and dump it into the center of that cell.
    Of course, that's with 20 seconds of thought.

  • Standard converters: setValueBinding is missed

    I noticed that the JSF Sun implementation and also MyFaces one don't offer a setValueBinding() method for Converters.
    I need to dynamically create an input component in my backbean and add a convertDateTime to it, I would like to set the "timeZone" attribute using a value binding expression.
    There is any other way to do this without the setValueBinding() method?

    I would like to create the following code dinamically in my backbean:
    <t:inputCalendar value="...">
      <f:convertDateTime timeZone="#{MyBean.timeZone}" />
    </t:inputCalendar>so, the backbean code I wrote is:
    Application application  = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getApplication();
    HtmlInputCalendar input = (HtmlInputCalendar)application.createComponent(HtmlInputCalendar.COMPONENT_TYPE);
    DateTimeConverter converter = (DateTimeConverter)application.createConverter(DateTimeConverter.CONVERTER_ID);
    converter.setValueBinding("timeZone", "#{MyBean.timeZone}"); // no setValueBinding() method defined in javax.faces.convert.Converter
    input.setConverter(converter);the problem is that neither Converter interface nor the DateTimeConverter implementation offer the "setValueBinding" method, only setTimeZone(TimeZone timeZone) is present.
    Obviously, the problem is not related to the specific input component I used in my example.
    Any hint or suggestions are very appreciated...

  • Using the internal sound card with good optical A/D converters?

    Dear Logic users, I have two questions:
    1) I was wondering if the internal sound card of my MacBook is of such quality that I can achieve good results if I bought a good A/D converter with a digital output to plug directly into the optical line in of the MacBook? E.g. the Samson C-valve http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1651&brandID=2 along with the M-Audio Co2 http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/CO2-main.html to convert the coaxial S/PDIF to optical? (Same procedure for the line out signal, with a D/A converter of course.) Or is the internal sound card of such inferior quality that I should stick with my current MBox 2 Pro? My initial thought was that if the signal is kept within the digital realm, it is really the A/D converters that determine the sound quality, and that the internal sound card of my MacBook does little less than calculate the digital signal. Maybe someone with a more intimate knowledge of how the internal sound card works with digital I/O could chime in?
    2) If the above mentioned approach would be feasible, suggestions of other A/D and D/A converters would be most welcome.
    The reason for this is to be free from the driver issues that sometimes occur with external hardware, especially with software/OS upgrades.

    If you are recording Midi using loops and all it wont make a difference in having a AD/ converter. as everything you are doing is in the box.
    However if you want to get a Analogue signal into the computer then its a different case, and I'm not talking about using Optical from a keyboard, and even if i was you would need to have a converter anyway,
    even though i am talking about Recording Vocals or Live instrument!
    This is where the Converters come into play, be aware Converter and sound-cards are two different source of hardware,
    anyway Back to Converters on live vocals this is where the AD comes into play,
    transferring Analogue Signal into Digital,
    and also getting used to the sound of the converts, or even liking the the sound of the converters/soundcard which is always going to be subjective and which also shares a relation with Near-field monitors,
    you change your monitors and it seems as if your sound changes that is how tight the relation is between the two.

  • Best Ipod Video Converters

    HEllo Everybody i about to get a ipod video and i am trying out video converters but cannot find any good ones so can anybody help me?? Like what is in your opinion the best converter for video i have tried the PQ DVD to Ipod converter and that seems ok but i wanted to know of other better one's.
    Thanks for takiing the time.

    I'd suggest MPEG-Streamclip; works really well.
    http://www.squared5.com/ It might take a while for
    the site to load but you have to be patient.
    I just tried this and it works way better than Videora - no A/V sync problems. If I have any complaint it's that it doesn't grok WMV format - but that's okay, 'cos I'll just render my videos as AVI instead, which is 4x the speed of a WMV render.
