Summing up the networking grief

I'm apparently having similar issues as many others with internet/network performance following update of my MacBook to 10.5/10.5.1. Possible solutions are spread out over many threads here, so I'd like to try to pull them together and note that they don't fix the problems. I have read something to the effect that "Apple is working on a fix;" this message is basically an alternative to sitting on my hands until that happens.
The problems:
- Very slow download speeds; streaming AV can't keep buffers full (was no problem on same connection with Tiger)
- Large downloads (>15MB) routinely stall, with connection dropping (Activity Monitor incoming data line drops to zero)
- AIM unusable, whether through iChat or Adium: constant bogus "signed on from 2 locations" messages and server request timeout errors.
The environment:
- 2Ghz Intel Core Duo MacBook
- PPPoA DSL via Actiontec GT701 modem/router, both wired and wireless, 1280/640 Kbps
- 1997 iMac running 10.4.9 on same network has no apparent trouble; outperforms MacBook in network speed and stability
The attempted solutions:
- Upgrading router firmware (Actiontec GT701)
- Using Airport Express instead of DSL modem/router's native wireless
- Going from open wireless to WEP to WPA, public to closed SSID
- Disabling router firewall
- Changing AIM port to 443
- Using OpenDNS instead of ISP DNS
- Deleting NetworkInterfaces.plist, preferences.plist, com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, com.apple.network.identification.plist
- Trying Adium instead of iChat
- Trying Firefox instead of Safari
- Changing QuickTime streaming connection speeds to max
- Enabling 802.1X login
- Bypassing airport/wireless altogether and plugging straight into the DSL modem/router.
- sudo ifconfig en1 mtu 1400
Going to OpenDNS and setting the mtu to 1400 both seem to have a small positive impact on the problems, but are far from completely resolving them.
I'm pretty sure the DSL or this particular modem/router is a key part of the problem, because connecting to other networks, wired or wireless, is nowhere near as bad.

MTU 1400 is not going to kill your speeds at any bandwidth home users have. Please do the math before making a statement like that.
The MTU values are not a craps shoot and can be calculated. I believe I made the recommendation to go to 1400 during a troubleshooting session because if it does not work, then the issue is not with packet size since that value would account for PPPoE/A overhead, any sort of IP/GRE tunnel overhead, and any additional TCP options that may be set by the user. If it does work, then the real MTU can be calculated.
If you ONLY have PPPoE in the loop (probably most people), 1492 would be fine since it's an 8 byte header. Taking it any lower than that should be uncommon.
In reality, you should never have to touch the MTU. You should transmit at the size your local media will support. Other protocols, such as PMTU-D, kick in to auto-adjust things down. It can't adjust up. If you have to touch this, it's due to one of those protocols not being able to function currently either due to a router or firewall (possibly your systems built-in firewall). MSS should normally be adjusted before the MTU is. However, that setting doesn't seem to take in Leopard.
Taking your window size down to 65535 would cause a heck of a lot more impact than a 1400 byte MTU. There's a good reason why it is increased.
At 65535 byte window and 100ms of latency, which is quite possible over the Internet, you're going to be limited to about 5 Mbps. It's set high for a reason. To get 30 Mbps, which many of us do have to our homes, you'll need a 375,000 byte buffer. Once you have a buffer that large, the other speed improvements provided by Leopard such as SACK need to be enabled or if you drop a packet you'll be in a world of hurt.

  • Deployment Optimizer - Equal weightage for all the locations in the network

    Hello All,
I am having difficulty in assigning equal weightage for all the locations in the deployment network.  My scenario is as described below:
    Deployment Source location: LOC1
    Destination locations: LOC2, LOC3
    I am running Heuristics to plan LOC2, LOC3 & LOC1, followed by
    a Deployment Optimizer run at LOC1 to deploy to LOC2 & LOC3.
ATD quantity at LOC1 is always calculated after saftisfying the requirements at LOC1 and the remainder is deployed to LOC2 & LOC3 based on the cost settings.  This seems to be the case even if I don't run the heuristics at LOC1 and start deployment optimizer after running the heuristics at LOC2 and LOC3.
The need at this client place is that all three locations are equally important even though LOC1 is the only deploying source location.
This applies for all demand categories i.e. Sales orders, Forecast and forecast at all the three locations.
I would appreciate if anybody has done this kind of configuration before and let me know how to model this.
    Thanks,
    Venkat

Have you follow all this checking ?
If you think that you already follow all the steps, but the value is not as per your config, you can raise ticket to SAP about it.
But I suggest you to double check your computation.
To determine a vendor's price level, the system compares the vendor's effective price with the market price for the material.
       1. The system first checks whether the buyer has maintained a market price for the material or the material group.
       2. If not, the system calculates the market price which is equal to the average of the effective prices for all vendors supplying this material. Prices from purchase orders and prices for subcontracting are dealt with separately.
       3. The system then applies the effective price for the vendor from the conditions.
       4. The vendor's effective price is then compared with the market price and the percentage variance determined.
       5. The system then assigns a score to the variance in accordance with the settings made in Customizing.
       6. This score is valid for the material, that is, at info record level. Since the score the vendor receives for a subcriterion is based not on an individual material, but on the total of all the materials he supplies, the following steps are necessary:
       7. The system repeats the comparison between effective price and market price for each of the vendor's materials.
       8. The system calculates an average from the sum of the scores determined. This average represents the vendor's score for the subcriterion Price Level.

  • Thinkpad T60p fails to connect to the network.

    Greetings,
I have been having connectivity problems with my ThinkPad T60p. As a result, I removed and re-installed the network drivers.
At this point, when I turn on the wireless, I can see all of the available networks, but when I choose an open network, anyone, the network connection process starts, almost completes, and then, I get the following error:
"Unable to connect to the selected wireless network. You may need to configure your system to support the authentication that is in use. Contact you network administrator."
I am not a network expert, so I would appreciate some help.

  • Hi, I am trying to update an iPhone 4 from iOS 4.3.3 to iOS 7.0.4, and every time I try to update it comes up with an error message saying that there was a problem because the network connection was reset. Is there any way I can get past this and update?

    The full message said:
There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone "Judy's iPhone 4". The network connection was reset.
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.
I am trying to update the iPhone for my grandmother, Judy, as I am leaving for Paris on Wednesday night and we want to have Facetime installed on her iPhone before then, so we can stay in contact with each other. It is the simplest way for this to happen but the program simply will not allow me to update her iPhone.
Is there any way to get past this error and update her iPhone? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Dear Jody..jone5
Good for you that can't update your iphone because I did it and my iphone dosen't work for example I can't download any app like Wecaht or Twitter..
    Goodluck

  • How do I add a printer connected to another iMac on the network to my printer list?

How do I add an Epson printer connected to an iMac on the network to the printer list on my MacBook Pro? I cannot get it to show up in the list for printers to add.

That only works if the printer is itself a network printer. You can't do it if it is directly connected to another computer on the network unless it is configured to be a Shared Printer on the other computer.

Did you get anywhere with this? I'm getting the same error when I try to use Home Sharing. It worked through all the 9.x versions, but with 10.0.1, I can't even home share between two identical MacBooks. I get the above error when I try to copy a song / video / etc. from one library to another.

  • AirPort Extreme extends my network and has worked well for three months. Now it can no longer extend the network and flashes Amber. I have restored to factory settings moved it closer to time capsule and rebooted the system without luck

i have a blinking Amber on my extreme now and it cannot extend the network.  It was working fine and nothing has changed. I have restored to factory settings moved it to another room and rebooted the system without luck. Any suggestions

    What OS are you running?
Please give me a screenshot of the current AE setup..
I strongly recommend if you have issues.. take control of all the variables. Apple routers have too much auto..
Here is a list that I use for setups when using Yosemite.. but it relates to any OS.
You will need to factory reset again to get going.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite or whatever you are using.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
    eg AEgen5 for basestation.
Use AE24ghz and AE5ghz for wireless on each band, with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for router but if the AE is bridged you can have trouble.. Try using the static IP method or control it via the main router dhcp reservations.
    4. Check your share name on the computer/s is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Set up the extend to the Express using 2.4ghz and then see how good or bad the connection is.. this is better in the old v5 utility but if you hover your mouse over where it shows connection an extra chunk of info comes up.
I have specifically used 5ghz to make the extend.. because by testing it works better.. but do not be fooled.. this good connection is poor.. the RSSI.. which is difference signal .. at -79dbm is down the bottom of the stable.. and it drops out on a daily basis.. you want to see that signal around -60dbm at min.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.

  • My iMac can no longer find my Canon Mg-5320 on the network.

I have a 2012 iMac and a Canon MG-5320 printer connected on home wifi.  It was working fine when last I checked, about a month ago.  Today the iMac can't find the printer on the network.  I ran the setup on the printer, even though it runs fine on the PCs in the house and my iPad.  I started and restarted both machines.  I reinstalled the driver.  The iMac still can't find it on the network.

Well duh.  I restarted the router and then it was able to find the printer.  There you go.  Thanks.

  • "filter failed" HP printers fails to work over the network

I got the common error "filter failed" when using my HP Color Laserjet 1600 through the network. Yet the printer works fine using directly from the computer it is connected via usb.
This is my home network and I am not here often, but I am fairly sure everything worked out-of-the-box few weeks ago...

try making certain that you have the latest drivers installed, which you can caget fron HP. After downloading do to system prefs>>print/fax. hightlight the HO1320n (use the - key). then use the add 9+) key ang select the HP1320n icon to add the nem printer. Set the HP as your your default printer. When you go to print for the first time, make sure that the selected printed is the the HP1320. It should go. Sometimes it need to be re-created when there are multiples.
Good luck and hope this helps

I have a network of 9 macs that connect via ethernet and a router. All of a sudden one of the macs cannot be connected to. It can connect to all others and the internet, but no one can connect to that one. I have appletalk active and file sharing on, but everytime someone tries to connect to it, it is not on the network. Additionally, the personal file sharing keeps turning off even though I have it locked. Any ideas?

    Hi orangekay
not sure where you got the idea that I have
bizarre encrypted filesystem plugins and scripts you have manipulating them all the time
because I do not have any such running, just normal Applescripts that do tasks that could be done by hand.

  • We have a PC with iTunes that needs the hard drive reformatted. Right now, it can't connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my music to a thumb drive, then re-load when the computer is reformatted?

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting?  How do I do it?

Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.

Thanks for your response; however, the first screenshot is through the Sharing settings in the System Preferences.

Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

    Hi,
So switch a LAN card fix this issue...seems a compatibility issue or maybe some packs or programs you installed recently cause this issue.
Have you manually check the network adapter driver from the PC's manufacture website? sometimes, it will be a time delay before Microsoft push out the driver update.
Check if issue exists in safemode with network, this mode will launch Windows with limited sets of files and drivers.
if you have a restore point, restore the pc to a previous point at which the pc is functioning fine.
