Sun Solaris8 'Aide' Installation

Hi There,
I am a new with Sun Solaris baby. I mean totally know nothing about Solaris. Now I have 3 Sun Solaris8 to manage. Some one recommeded me to install 'Aide' (Advanced intrusion detection environment). I installed it fine on one of my box. The problem now is I have no idea how does it work. The 'Aide' manual is great, I mean I can't find what to do with this manual. Can some one help me where to start with this software? And what steps need to be done after the installation.
Here what I did:
1. Installed 'aide' - OK!
2. Tried: aide --init - ERROR: "can't find aide.conf in /usr/local/etc"
3. STUCK!
Please share with me your good 'aide.conf' file. Thanks!
Stephanie

Although this really has nothing to do with Solaris I can give you one hint....
1. Installed 'aide' - OK!
2. Tried: aide --init - ERROR: "can't find aide.conf
in /usr/local/etc"
3. STUCK!I'd say add an aide.conf file in /usr/local/etc. You might like to check this website for some good examples: http://www.cs.tut.fi/~rammer/aide/manual.html.
Seriously; if you can't create your aide conf file yourself you're probably better off not using aide instead of creating a false feeling of safety. Safety isn't obtained by installing whatever software package, its by having a good understanding of the way things work and what they are doing.

  • Solaris8 Intel Installation Troubles..

    Hi,
I'm trying to install Solaris 8 for Intel on an old HP Vectra VL8i (400 Mhz, 128MB ram). Currently this machine has a screwed up install (*my fault* ) of Linux Mandrake 7.2. I downloaded the Solaris8 binaries off of sun.com and was trying to make a boot diskette on my 2000 adv. server box to then create the bootable .iso cd images (set of 3 cds for install). Once that was done, I had planned to start the install on my Vectra (the one running Mandrake). However, now I realized the "format a: /s" option is no longer supported under 2000. Its not even an option listed under the format help info screen. So I'm in a bit of a pickle...I'm trying to figure out how to get the necessary files on a formatted floppy diskette to make the diskette bootable with CD ROM driver support. I know I need to copy an autoexec.bat, config.sys, and setup the mscdex file to make this work, but I get lost in the details of it all.
    A little later,
OK, I reinstalled Mandrake on it and its working fine now that way I can start from a clean point. I burnt 2 CDs of the first installation CD for Solari8 intel to test this with..
According to the informational instructions at Sun.com they recommend using "winzip" to unzip the archive and Adaptec EZ CD Creator to burn a "bootable .iso CD image". Well, I have both those programs and so when I unzipped the .iso file for the installation CD it appeared on my desktop as an adaptec ez cd icon. I opened it up, selected bootable CD (according to cd creator help file to make a bootable cd I need to copy a bootable floppy over to it..), it prompts me for my boot floppy, I insert it works, and creates 2 boot files. Then I add the solaris8.iso for the install cd, and burn the CD. Now, I take it over to my HP Vectra, pop it in, power on, and it loads the oak cd rom driver and sets my floppy as A: and my cdrom as X: I can now enter X: and see the solaris-8.iso file but can't do anything with it.....
FYI: I have set the CDROM to boot before the HDD in the bios.
My next attempt after reading your post was to just extract the .iso file from the zip archive and then burn it in ISO format as is...no bootable CD junk per Adaptec's Help file. I do that and pop it in and my computer does nothing, just boots up to linux mandrake because it doesn't start the install when it hits the cdrom first....again, just has the solaris8 install .iso file on it, and this time nothing else on the CD.
My question is, is there something I am missing regarding the install .iso file? Do I have to extract that to something? Windows views it as an archive.... I have scoured the sun docs and solaris intel install information and not much is on this except "extract using winzip and burn a bootable .iso using adaptec easy cd creator with the .iso file you extracted from winzip". I'm really confused at this point...I know I was trying to load it on top of a Linux Mandrake OS, but it had 4.2 GB of free space. I can't even get the installation process STARTED!!! LOL!
    Thanks for any help...
PS...I think something is messed up with my HDD now. I went through fdisking my non-dos partitions (linux mandrake) and formatting the HDD from a boot floppy to see if this might help. It didn't. However, now there is supposedly nothing on my HDD. However if I just let it boot up it comes up to a "grub" shell, and has only limited functionality (like 20 commands). So there is obviously something still left on my HDD.
Oh also, before that I tried using the first Solaris OS .iso file not the INITIAL install .iso I was previously using. This is the .iso you mentioned I should try to use. I am still stuck at the same place...it won't start the install. I don't know if its because something is incorrect with my HDD or if its something I'm missing regarding copying the .iso onto the CD to start with....ANY, and I do mean ANY help is greatly appreciated here!

Hi, I'm not sure that I understanded your actual problem correctly, but I think that your installation CD's, where you said are .iso files, you messed up. The ISO files are images, like HD partitions archived in one file for portability. You have to burn those images with burner which supports ISO images, in other words, burning software unarchives the ISO image while the burn process, so correctly burned CD contains all ISO images files and directories , not just one big ISO file. I think 'cdrecord' in Linux supports ISO images.
Sorry my bad english, its not my native language :)

I changed both memory and the hard drive but I still have the same problem. Can anyone please tell me what the problem might be or what remedial step I should take to install Solaris 10 on R31?
    Thanks

Did you try install check CD before the installation?
I think that there might be two main reasons:
    1. Your computer is not supported
    2. Hard drive may need to be formated to FAT32 or UFS

  • Sun Federation Manager installation problem

I'm trying to install Sun Federation Manager on a machine running RedHat Linux and Sun Application Server. The installation in itself appears to go ok, and the loginpage appears when i connect to http://x.x.x.x/federation The problem is when I try to login with the username and password, it only redirects back to the login page. It seems like it tries to go to AMAdminFrame, but gets redirected back. First I thought i didn't login correctly, but when I look in the amAuthentication.access file, it says that the login was correct.
Has anyone else had this problem? I've tried with both 8.2 and 9 of the application server, and the problem is the same on both. All help would be appriciated.
I've also tried with the Sun Webserver, but it threw an nullpointerexception on me. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hello,
When you create any user through SUN Access Manager, is that user is created in LDAP
datastore, or is it created in SAM flat file repository ?

"Error writing native components to disk. Aborting wizard"

I've asked around for a solution to this problem. At the moment my last resort solution is to do a format of my machine and try again =) because all my mates have had no bother so far.
If anyone could give me a hint as to what's wrong I'd be utterly grateful.
    Regards,

As wierd as it sounds, one of the things that will trigger this behaviour is if you have a file called Documents on the drive where your %USERPROFILE% directory is. For instance, if %USERPROFILE% is c:\documents and settings\username, the existance of c:\Documents will break native toolkit bootstrap process.
Workaround is to temporarily rename the file and run the installation...

  • Where to download SUN JES 5 installer package for windows / linux

Can someone pls advise where to downlaod the SUN Java System Applcation server package 7.1 installer for windows / solaris.??
    Thanks.

Sun Application Server 7.1 is not even part of JES5 which comes with Sun AS 9.1 (GF 2.1)
If that was just a typo, then try edelivery.oracle.com, otherwise, you will have to request it from Oracle support since that version is ancient.

  • Sun Directory Server Installation

    Hi all,
I am a student in a Computer Science degree and as my project i am designing a web application that allows users to exchange ideas through a "messaging" system.
After discussion with my tutors we have come up with a design idea that we would use an LDAP server to authenticate users as well as keep message details such as Topic, message header, etc. The actual body of the msg should be kept in a separate database.
    To the point....
It has been suggested that i use the Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2 for this project and i was also given a compressed installation package. I have tried to install this and received error msgs similar to the ones i have found others have had in this forum.
    For example topics:
    1. Forums - Directory Server configuration issues in Windows
    2. Forums - Install failed on Windows XP
I am using windows XP and from what i have read although it is not supported some people have managed to get this to work. Also i read that maybe Studio enterprise might solve this issue or provide some support?
Is this true and if so can someone give me some guidance on how to achieve this?
Also i would appreciate your opinion on wether this design approach( LDAP for authentication and database for store) is feasible or technicaly "correct" and maybe suggestions to a different approach....

I think that its never a bad idea to get acquainted with something like the Sun Directory Server although I'm not sure that means that one HAS to use it in a project.
The DS can be a pain to get up but for the most part if you get the latest DS5.2 Q4 or something...most installations go smoothly. If it was me I would just chuck every thing about the convo into the directory but I'm sure that there's a reason that you want to use the DS in conjuction with other storage DBs.
I don't think you need to get Studio enterprise. I was able to get it up and running all by itself on windows. After I installed it I jsut made sure to remember the two random ports it picks up for Admin and DS ldap usage. Also I changed the password expiry time of the account that is used by the Admin console.
    GLuck with this.
    Cheers,

  • Sun Solaris: guess installation type

    Hi,
a tricky question for you: how can I guess which kind of Solaris installation is on a system?
For istance, how can I know wheter a Solaris Entire Distribution + OEM installation was done? Is there a configuration file? Should I check all SUNWC package names and compare them with my "pkginfo" output or is there a file that contains something like "entire distribution + OEM installation"?
    Thanks in advance
    Antonio

    Antonio,
This is really easy to do:
    # cat /var/sadm/system/admin/CLUSTER
Also to see the build installed:
    # cat /etc/release
    SUNWrnet -Reduced Networking
    SUNWCreq - Core System Support
SUNWCuser - End User System Support
    SUNWCprog - Developer System Support
    SUNWCall - Entire Distribution
SUNWCXall - Entire Distribution plus OEM support

I have tried downloading the Java DMK 5.1 but have been unable to run this on Windows and the downloaded package does not match the instructions i.e. there is no Windows folder in the package.
Can any one give any clue or advise please.

Are you using the ZIP or Native installation of DSEE 6.0? Is there a reason why you're not trying 6.3 or 6.3.1?

It's supposed that a standard installation includes Sun ONE Studio and Sun ONE Application Server 7 with PointBase.
I installed twice, in both installations the IDE works fine. But despite the installation completes without any error message neither Sun ONE Application Server 7 nor PointBase are installed.
    My OS is Windows XP.
Could someone help me to find why this happens?
    Thanks!!!

I read now the log generated during the installation. It shows a lot of error lines. But I'm not able to know the cause of the problem. The IDE is installed OK, but there is not any evidence of PointBase and Sun One Server installation.
It follows the log file content:
