Sun Studio 12 linker error

When linking, I get the following error on Studio 12 under Solaris 5.10.
It's a big program, which has been used for years and compiles fine with SUNPro62 Solaris 5.8 and 5.10 and
using g++ on Linux RH3 and RH4, 322-bit and 64-bit.
It's a heavily templated piece of code.
I've gotten patch 124863-03 already, which didn't help.

My co-worker posted the same problem here in September of last year, but was never able to resolve the issue.
Can anyone help me, or give me an idea where to look? The symbols mentioned are inside the system file algorithm.cc
Thanks,
Tom Jewell

We were unable to find a cause for the problem, or even duplicate the problem, based on the information provided. Apparently at that time you were working with a Sun Support engineer. You should return to that support channel. There's only so much we can do via the forum. Someone needs to look at your source code and build process in detail to figure out what the problem is.

    In general, if you are having a problem compiling Open Source code with Sun Studio, you need to try the community support portal for that code.
    Start with the Iperf home page
    [http://starplane.org/tooldoc/iperf/]
    Often, Open Source code has been tried only with gcc, and won't build with other compilers without some effort.
    If nobody else has tried using Sun Studio, you might need to do some debugging of configuration scripts and even source code.
    The Iperf home page provides an address where you can report such problems.
    In addition, older versions of autoconf and libtool don't work with Sun Studio, and can generate invalid makefiles. Be sure you have the current versions of both, if they are used by Iperf.

    Hi Kiran ,
    if you cannot upgrade Sun Studio, I suggest that you take a view on this solution:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=850&threadID=5069680
    It only works to std::vector::__insert_aux method, but I think you could get some useful idea from it.
    Good luck.
    Bye.

  • Sun Studio 11 do not parse make output and create link to file?

    Hi,
    Running Sun Studio 11 and can only get file links in the output window when I run a make command that uses CC -g (debug option). We have integrated other tools into our make system (flexlint, cppUnit..) and even though we make sure that the syntax is exactly the same as the compiler output and matches regular expression under tools->options->building->make settings->error expression, it doesn't work. Why do you have to debug compile to get sun studio to create a file link in the output window? Doesn't sun studio just parse the text from the make command?
    example of flexlint output for which no link is created:
    "/vobs/project/oss/fm/fm4/fm-fmalib/fmbal/fmaaulib/src/FMA_List.cc", line 440: Error 84: sizeof object is zero or object is undefined'
    example of make debug output for which we do get a link:
    "/vobs/project/oss/fm/fm4/fm-fmalib/fmbal/SunOS5.10/inc/FMA_alarm_record.hh", line 1310: Warning (Anachronism):Info "static" is not allowed and is being ignored.
    Regards,
    Ola

    I'd second Maxim's suggestion: try NetBeans 5.5 with C/C++ Development Pack. The official release of NetBeans C/C++ Development Pack 5.5 has happened a few days ago. You can download it from
    http://www.netbeans.info/downloads/all.php?b_id=2284
    Some of the changes between the beta3 build and FCS are:
    * Significant performance improvements in the code parser resulting in faster results in the Class View and Code Completion
    * Programs now run in an external terminal (system dependent) by default. This allows better input control
    * Significant performance improvement in the debugging module
    * Significant functionality improvement in the debugging module
    * New project type "C/C++ Project From Existing Code" which simplifies creating a project from existing code
    * Macro support in code completion
    * Hyperlink navigation for macro usages and #include directives
    * Reformat code
    * Code folding
    * Code completion
    All these features will appear in next Sun Studio release, so you can
    consider NetBeans C/C++ Development Pack 5.5 as a preview of new
    Sun Studio IDE.

    I have no idea what could be causing this. I can find one link to it on this forum: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9488983 . But the only answer to that query says it is the same as another bug which appears entirely different, not to mention being very old (while talking about an imminent fix), and being related to a different OS and (I think) a different version of sun studio (express vs. normal?).
    Any ideas? Could it be related to having gcc/g++ on the machine?

    I have a shared library built with Sun Studio 9.

    This gives me a link error:

    Any ideas what could be wrong?
    Thanks in advance,

    You can use a binary created by an older compiler in a program built with a newer compiler. We take care not to invalidiate old binary interfaces in new compilers.
    You cannot use a binary created by a newer compiler in a program built with an older compiler. The newer compiler will in general use features from headers or system libraries that are unknown to the older compiler.
    If you have a set of binaries created by different compiler versions, you must build the final program using a compiler at least as new as the newest compiler that was used.
    Similar rules apply to verions of Solaris where the binaries are built. If you build a binary on an older Solaris version, you can use it on a newer Solaris version -- but not the reverse.

  • Sun Studio Express - February 2008 download link points to internal site

    The download link at http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/ssx/readme.html, part 4 points to a Sun internal
    site (http://dscpreview.sfbay/sunstudio/downloads/express.jsp).
    Can this be fixed ?

    Not exactly the same topic, but it is not currently possible to download the express edition of Sun Studio due to an error that occurs when submitting an email address. The error given (from http://subscriptions.sun.com/util/sunmail.jsp) is:
    Error  :  Requested action failed for the email address [email protected]
    SunMailThread : nullAttempting to use the "Send Comments" link is also met with failure. After I fill out all the information, it sends me to a page with just the first and last name fields highlighted, as if to tell me they need to be filled in (yet - they are), but there is no form to submit on this page. Hence, I am stuck.
    So, I come here in hopes that both these problems get fixed sometime!

    I googled "SSServiceTagSupport.java:257" and found out that it is filed as IZ 154094 against Netbeans:
    http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=154094
    Actually it was reported many times:
    http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=151921
    It suggests a few workarounds.
    Workaround 1:
    "Simple workaround is to disable registration using command line option -J-Dnb.registration.enabled=false"
    Workaround 2:
    "The file ~/.netbeans-registration/6.5/registration.xml is empty, so I have this file erased and restarted the IDE.
    After this step, the file was not regenerated, but the IDe starts now without this problem."
    Please, try one of them.

  • Sun Studio C++ v5.3 adding complex gives errors

    If anyone can privide info on the following issue I would greatly appreciate it.. I have a simple test app that does not compile. This is with Sun Studion C++ v5.3 (I think then called Sun Workshop Pro) on a Solaris 5.8 machine.
    #include <complex>
    using namespace std;
    int main()
      complex<int> a(1, 2);
      complex<int> b(3, 4);
      complex<int> c;
      c = a + b;
      cout << "Answer: " << c << endl;
      return 0;
    }When compiling I get the following error:
    /opt/SUNWspro/WS6U2/include/CC/Cstd/complex Line 1006: Error The operation "std::complex<int> += const std::complex<int> is illegal
    sol_cpx.cc Line 10 Where: While instantiating std::complex<int>+ ( const std::complex<int>, const std::complex<int> )
    sol_cpx.cc Line 10 Where: Instantiated from non-template code
    Are there any compiler flags to handle this or is there an update I can get to fix this? Any help would be much appreciated since I'm clueless. Thank you!

    complex<int> is not supported. The only specializations of type complex are float, double, and long double.
    The suggestion to try stlport won't work with C++ 5.3.
    We began supplying stlport with C++ 5.4.
    C++ 5.3 has been declared End Of Life, and only limited support is available for it. You can download a copy of the current release, Sun Studio 10, and try it free for 60 days.

    asm(" .A9999:");
    asm(" popl %ebx"); /* restore the register */
    return(r);
    Can someone let me know if this is a Compiler issue or it has something to do with my code .
    I'll Appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks in Advance
    Somak

    If you specify -S compiler option, assembly file will be produced and it enables you to look at the code assembler is complaining about. For example:
    /ASM
    pushl %ebx <== line 31
    /ASMEND
    I'm not too familiar with AMD64 ABI, but it is possible that you can't use 32-bit registers in 64 bit mode with some operations like memory (including stack) access.
    I was able to compile code with the following changes:
    asm(" movl $1,%eax"); /* this 1 inworking reg will set x /
    asm(" pushl %rbx"); /* save the register; eax already saved */
    asm(" movl 8(%rbp),%ebx"); /* move the address of x */
    asm(" xchg %eax,(%rbx)"); /* atomic swap a one with x /
    asm(" cmp $0,%eax"); /* test what was in x /
    asm(" jnz .A9999"); /* jump if x was already set /
    r = 1; /* indicate set occurred */
    asm(" .A9999:");
    asm(" popl %rbx"); /* restore the register */

    C++ 5.7 will not give good results building Boost.
    Support for boost began with C++ 5.9 (Sun Studio 12), but you will get better results using the current release, Sun Studio 12 update 1, and better still with the upcoming release, Oracle Solaris Studio 12.2.

    Akos

    OK, I tried latest version of CC from Sun Studio 12 update 1 and can say that
    - the error about constructor not being accessible is Sun C++ compiler "feature" (only called feature because it existed for so long) that allows binding of rvalues to non-const references; this "feature" will probably be turned off in the next release. It can't be changed in a patch because client's code might rely on it.
    - the other errors are also not Boost-specific: the result of incompatibility of Linux headers and Sun C++ compiler; more thorough investigation is due, but in the past we had several problems like this. This particular can be solved by adding
    -D_GNU_SOURCE to compile line.

  • C compiler cannot create executables error, Sun Studio 12, snv_69

    I am having difficulty compiling a program for R version 2.6.0 from the bioconductor site called RSQLite. I have successfully build R with Sun Studio 12, but now this particular package complains that my C compiler cannot create executables and I have idea how to go about trying to fix this. I don't know if you need to see the 'configure' file to help with this.

    configure: exit 77

    Apparently the the config program is running dmake without the -m option. Dmake replies that it is defaulting to parallel mode, and the config program uses that message as a compiler command or option. After that, the wheels come off. :-)
    Fix the configure script to run dmake as
    dmake -m serial
    and see if that fixes the problem.
