Support for 8-bit pseudocolor visuals on Solaris 10 u8 Virtualbox guest

Hello,
I am running Solaris 10 u8 x86 as a Virtualbox (3.0.8) guest on a WinXP host with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 3500 vcard. I use JDS for the Solaris guest, and only 24-bit truecolor visuals are available for the desktop. I desperately need to run Xnest in 8-bit pseudocolor mode for an application. The video driver supplied with the Vbox Solaris guest additions has limited capability, and I think that until that driver is upgraded, I am out of luck. Does anyone have any different thoughts about that?
Is there a way to edit xorg.conf to get support for 8-bit pseudocolor overlay graphics? Wouldchanging the video driver in that file from vboxvideo to either VGA or VESA help? Any advice from an X expert would be GREATLY appreciated.
I've also tried to use svcadm to get the guest to open in 8-bit mode (default depth), but I think that the Vbox video driver (standard and VESA) only support 16- and 32-bit color modes. Is there some other way to get JDS or CDE in the guest to run in 8-bit color?
Thanks.....

Regarding expense, I was referring to the dual-headed card you suggested, not Xming.ah. my bad. Though most cards nowadays have dual outputs.
Here is a Vbox report documenting the whole situation, including Sun's replies regarding DirectColor:

it looks like you guys were talking past each other.

Note my outputs of xdpyinfo in there: no Pseudocolor visuals in 24-bit mode in the guest (the cause of my problem). My host NVIDIA card has dual DVI outputs, and I have two monitors; are you saying that I set one monitor in Windows to run in 8-bit, and then run Xming on that monitor, and then set up a remote display for my guest, and try and get the guest to display to that remote display? If so, that could be worth a try. If not, maybe I did not fully understand the idea from your first post. I'd rather not have to go out and buy a new dual-headed card unless absolutely necessary.The problem you have is that virtualbox needs a 8 bit display somewhere to send the output to. Send your end display is a windows display in 24 bit mode, it's a lose since windows won't (at least the last time I looked) allow an 8 bit window in a 24 bit desktop. You could try running the main windows display in 8 bit mode and then starting virtual box, but odds of things going in your favor is not great.
Your new idea of running a vnc server in 8-bit mode within Solaris is very interesting indeed. I am unfamiliar with vnc. I saw this page:
http://www.softpanorama.org/Xwindows/VNC/vnc_on_solaris.shtml
It says that VNC comes with Solaris 10 u5, on the companion CD. I assume that u8 has it also.Somewhere along the line, sun began do bundle vnc as a part of solaris proper. It should be in /bin/vncserver.
I'll look into that. If you know of any other source of info on vnc, please let me know. Thank you VERY MUCH for the suggestion!!!Here's more or less what you should do:
1) login to your virtual solaris box
2) Start up a 8 bit vnc server by typing "vncserver -depth 8 :1"
3) After the setup questions (if I remember, you need to at least set a password), you can connect to the vncserver by
typing "vncviewer :1" and entring the password.
You could also get a windows VNC viewer and connect to the solaris vnc server. This may render faster, since you aren't running the vncviewer in a virtual session.
4) In the vnc viewer display (which may look funny because the default setup is usually a horriffic twm session), start your Xnest.
If you want cde, edit your .vnc/xstartup to look like:
#!/bin/sh
xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
dtterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
dtwm &
If you want jds, replace the dttterm/dtwm with gnome-panel.

I have a X200T with the integrated graphics. I'm trying to connect to a server and set up a X Windows kind of thing, but I get this error message: "ERROR Failed to find either 24-bit TrueColor or 8-bit PseudoColor Visual"
Whe I go to Control Panel--> Display --> Settings --> Color Quality, I only see two options: 1) Highest (32-bit) and 2) Medium (16-bit). I don't see an option for 24-bit or "millions of colors", etc.
Any ideas?

BUG! Not system locale Filenames support for 32-bit applications error in Windows 8.1 x64.
All Windows x64 (XP,2003,2007,Vista,7,8) have no support for not system locale filenames|foldernames for all 32-bit applications. I think it is BUG!
For example, it is possible to read files|folders with French or Chinese in English locale windows installed, rename it, but it is not possible open it, edit or delete. (ERRORS: File not found OR Unknown format)
With using 64-bit programs no such problems. How does it works and how can I fix this? Is it problem with encoding in translating kernel instructions for 32-bit apps in x64 Windows OS's? Whether there are
solutions to this problem OR some hacks|fixes?

Hi,
Have you installed the language package for French or Chinese?
If no, please download the language package and install them.

• Support for 32-bit

I have a number of 32-bit files produced by the Merge to HDR routine in PS CS2 and CS3.
I store the 32-bit files as the key creative stage in HDR processing is in the reduction to 16-bit (Image> Mode> 16 bpc in PS) and so it's handy to keep the 32-bit files to make alternate 16-bit versions. Currently it's not possible to import 32-bit files into the LR Library, so I'm stuck with using Bridge if I want to be able to see these files. I'm not asking for the ability to perform the 16-bit reduction in LR, just to be able to locate them in the Library so I can use LR as the starting point for all aspects of my workflow. The Library is so much better than Bridge in so many ways...
Can we have support for 32-bit in LR1.1, please?

I second this motion. I'd really like Lightroom to support the Bridge-style Photoshop workflows (e.g. Photomerge, Merge to HDR) fully, including representation of all produced assets including 32-bit files. In a more perfect world, power-users could even create custom workflow scripts (e.g. in Javascript ala PS CS3 scripting) in Lightroom.
As a Photoshop user, I don't have a pressing need for full 32-bit support in Lightroom itself. However, I find Lightroom highly desirable as a photographer's workflow management solution and front-end to the more powerful tools in Photoshop.

• Support for AVM ISDN PCMCIA Card in Solaris 10 ?

Hi all,
I would like to install Solaris 10 on my Toshiba Tecra S1 notebook. Today I use an ISDN-Card (AVM FritzCard, PCMCIA) for dial-up connections under Windows XP. Are there any drivers for ISDN and/or PCMCIA-Cards in Solaris10? Does anyone have any experiences with this issue?
Every hint would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
Kindly Regard,
Holger

Hello.
There only very poor support for ISDN cards in Solaris. As far as I know only the on-board ISDN card of one of the SparcStation computers is supported (this card is available as S-Bus card for other SparcStation computers).
I think there is no support for any ISDN card that can be attached to an x86 computer.
I wrote a driver for USB based ISDN modems that are based on the Winbond 6694 chip myself due to this lack of ISDN support. I tested it under Solaris 9/Sparc.

• Support for 64-Bit Windows?

Hello,
Do any/all versions of ODP.NET support the 64-Bit version of Windows? Is there a separate version of ODP and/or Client 9.2 for 64-Bit?
Thank you.

Microsoft has not released a 64-bit .NET framework as of yet. So, it's not possible to support any .NET application on 64-bit.

• Vcast Media Manager -- where is support for 64-bit windows computers??

I purchased a Droid 2 in October, when I plug it into my computer it brings up Verizon Vcast Media Manager page to download that program (which is good because I want to get my music onto my phone from my desktop computer). But only after download attempt does it tell me that said program will only support a 32-bit operating system. Well, I, my wife, and a lot of other people have a 64-bit operating system. Is Verizon really that far behind the times? Seriously has no one noticed this, a 32-bit machine is outdated these days. Why can i not hook my Droid up to my puter, I thought this was smartphone technology... Maybe the phone is smarter than Verizons Programmers?? To VZW, please correct me if I am wrong, or fix the problem if I am correct.

Currently there is no 64bit version available at this time, and no ETA to when one will be available. I would recommend as an alternative using the Droid 2 as a mass storage drive to transfer music. I have included the instruction in an article below:
http://support.vzw.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=34780
If it still does not recognize it as a device, try putting it in USB debugging mode. Instruction article given below:
http://support.vzw.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=31366
***As long as a memory card is present in the device, it will show up as a drive on your personal computer. Once it shows up as a drive, you can drag and drop music and media files on the Droid 2.

• Support for Code Snippets in Visual Studio Lanuage Service

I need to add support for Code Snippets to my Lanuage Service(which I am writing using MPF). I am doing all according to this MSDN
article.
First I've added attribute to my package class, like:
[ProvideLanguageCodeExpansion(typeof(MyLanguageService), "My Language", 0, "My Language",
@"C:\My\SnippetsIndex.xml", // Path to snippets index
SearchPaths = @"C:\My\Snippets\")] // Path to snippets
SnippetsIndex.xml file content is following:

<SnippetCollection>

<SnippetDir>
<OnOff>On</OnOff>
<Installed>true</Installed>
<Locale>%LCID%</Locale>
<DirPath>C:\My\Snippets\</DirPath>
<LocalizedName>Snippets</LocalizedName>
</SnippetDir>

</SnippetCollection>
And in this folder there is one file with default snippet, like:

<CodeSnippets xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/2005/CodeSnippet">
<CodeSnippet Format="1.0.0">

<SnippetTypes>
<SnippetType>Expansion</SnippetType>
</SnippetTypes>

SnippetFile1

<HelpUrl>
</HelpUrl>
<Shortcut>
</Shortcut>

<Snippet>

TEST TEST

</Snippet>
</CodeSnippet>
</CodeSnippets>
I've added method for detecting installed snippets from this article to
LanguageService class:
private void _GetSnippets(Guid languageGuid,
ref ArrayList expansionsList)
IVsTextManager textManager = (IVsTextManager)Package.GetGlobalService(typeof(SVsTextManager));
if (textManager != null)
IVsTextManager2 textManager2 = (IVsTextManager2)textManager;
if (textManager2 != null)
IVsExpansionManager expansionManager = null;
textManager2.GetExpansionManager(out expansionManager);
if (expansionManager != null)
// Tell the environment to fetch all of our snippets.
IVsExpansionEnumeration expansionEnumerator = null;
expansionManager.EnumerateExpansions(languageGuid,
0, // return all info
null, // return all types
0, // return all types
1, // include snippets without types
0, // do not include duplicates
out expansionEnumerator);
if (expansionEnumerator != null)
// Cache our expansions in a VsExpansion array
uint count = 0;
uint fetched = 0;
VsExpansion expansionInfo = new VsExpansion();
IntPtr[] pExpansionInfo = new IntPtr[1];
// Allocate enough memory for one VSExpansion structure. This memory is filled in by the Next method.
pExpansionInfo[0] = Marshal.AllocCoTaskMem(Marshal.SizeOf(expansionInfo));
expansionEnumerator.GetCount(out count);
for (uint i = 0; i < count; i++)
expansionEnumerator.Next(1, pExpansionInfo, out fetched);
if (fetched > 0)
// Convert the returned blob of data into a structure that can be read in managed code.
expansionInfo = (VsExpansion)Marshal.PtrToStructure(pExpansionInfo[0], typeof(VsExpansion));
if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(expansionInfo.shortcut))
expansionsList.Add(expansionInfo);
Marshal.FreeCoTaskMem(pExpansionInfo[0]);
If I call this method from package initializing method I got count
== 0 in line
expansionEnumerator.GetCount(out count);
And if I call it from method ParseSource in LanguageService class
as MSDN recommends, I've just got expansionEnumerator
== null.
I've spent much time trying to understand whats going on, but still got this strange result. Could anybody tell me what am I doing wrong?

Your XML files look good. Maybe it is necessary to add a shortcut to the snippet.
In my ViewFilter, I also react on the VSStd2KCmdID.INSERTSNIPPET command in HandlePreExec():
case VSConstants.VSStd2KCmdID.INSERTSNIPPET:
ExpansionProvider ep = this.GetExpansionProvider();
if (ep != null) {
ep.DisplayExpansionBrowser(this.TextView, "Snippets", null, false, null, false);
return true;

I got the probes

and when I use ps -ef to grep the java, it shows

Does dtrace support 64 bit JVM?

Reading state information... Done
Package acroread is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package acroread has no installation candidate
Two questions:
1.) Does Adobe have any intensions on supporting 64-bit Linux?
2.) Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get the reader to work on a 64-bit system?

Adobe Reader is 32-bit only, and so is the plugin. This may change some time in the future, but for now it's 32-bit.

• Does Mavericks add support for 10 bit per channel capable monitors

Just bought a HP Dreamcolor z27X monitor and have a new Mac Pro 6,1 and would like to know if my workstation supports the full capabilities of the monitor I just purchased.

JonB8305 wrote:

That 'is a strong inhalation of breath' (forum will not allow s..ks). I have to say Apple are falling way behind in terms of supporting current media standards.
Not ony has 10bit video been around for quite some time now and is something used and supported in Adobe products in the Windows world, but Apple have also failed to support HD audio standards as used in Blu-Ray as an example and also look like failing to support H.265 as will be used for 4K video. (H.265 is twice as efficient as H.264 making it far more practical for the much bigger bandwidth requirements of 4K video.)
Now in the case of HD audio and H.265 it might be that there is no justification from a playback point of view from Apple's perspective, but what Apple appear to have forgotten is that Mac used to be the first choice for creating media files and if Apple don't support these standards then Macs can no longer be viewed as being suitable for media creation. Therefore this is a huge own goal on Apple's part as content creators would be precisely those people looking to buy new Mac Pro systems and Apple have at least designed the hardware to support 4K editing even if their software is increasingly too feeble to support the required standards.
Note: I have previously submitted an enhancement request to Apple regarding 10bit video support, and also H.265 support, both prior to Mavericks being released.
I have no problem with Apple not supporting Blu-Ray playback in the form of providing themselves a Blu-Ray player. However as above I feel they should make the Mac or more accurately OS X able to utilise the same formats as this will allow both content creation tools, and also the possibility for a third-party Blu-Ray player that supports HD audio formats. It is apparently possible for a Mac running Windows in Boot Camp to play these HD audio formats which makes sense since Macs use pretty much the same hardware as 'real' PCs so it is just OS X that is the problem. In fact the way things are going even Linux is moving ahead of OS X in terms of media format support.

• Support for 64 bit OS

Since a 64 bit OS is now the de facto standard on many if not most PC's these days (and probably ALL of the PC's of PSE Users?), and since editing photos is memory hungry, can Adobe please indicate when a 64 bit version will be available please?
I don't know about anyone else, but to me, 64 bit support is the number 1 'feature' that I would like to see. I have a PC with 32GB RAM and panoramic stitches failing because of 'lack of memory' where the issue is that only 10% of my PC's memory can be addressed by the app. I would rebuy the app today if I could have it in 64 bit. Please, pretty please.

Premiere Elements for video editing is already available in 64 bit; so perhaps it's only a matter of time.
