Swap config suggestions

We have three M5000 servers (with 256gb RAM each) in an environment where we are running multiple solari 10 containers on each server. I keep running into application issues where java processes are unable to start because of OOM errors. Physical memory is abundant, but swap is another story. The servers were originally configured w/ 16gb swap. When we first saw this issue, we grew it to 32gb and now 64gb after seeing the issues again.
My question is: What is the best practice regarding swap size for a solaris container environment?

Its mostly depends on the applications you are running on the Solaris container. for oracle database you can follow this guideline as an initial sizing for swap size:
RAM     SIZE SWAP SPACE
Between 1 GB and 2 GB     1.5 times the size of RAM
Between 2 GB and 16 GB     Equal to the size of RAM
More than 16 GB     16 GB
You can check http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19253-01/817-5093/fsswap-31050/index.html for general guidelines.
But i will advice you allocate at least swap size that is equal or greater than the RAM (except u are using RAM of 32-128GB!!!)
NOTE: for the issues you are having...better check for memory leakages! libumem can be helpful for your troubleshooting.

  • Quad Config Suggestions for Editing Machine

EDIT: OOPS - Meant to post this in FCP Forum, sorry!
    Hi All,
Getting ready to order a Quad G5. Need some suggestions.
Regarding the three video card options... I will be editing (up to) 8- or 10-bit uncompressed video, doing some light titling and motion graphics, and DVD authoring.
What advantages (if any) does the QUADRO card provide in my situation? Would the mid level (7800 I think) card be sufficient? I don't plan on doing much heavy duty work with Motion, and I believe that FCP doesn't take advantage of advanced video cards for processing, so what is the advantage of the significantly higher priced card?
Also - what is suggested re: Hard Drives? Will internal and external SATA drives provide the throughput I need to capture and playback very high quality video (configged as a RAID I imagine)? As I mentioned, we'll be doing HDV as well as 8 or 10 bit uncompressed (although capturing lower res for offline editing)..
    Thanks!!
    Jason

Quad, 4.5 GB or more RAM, Decklink video card from BlackMagic Design, a X-Raid or a Sonnet 8 channel SATA PCI card and a external SATA enclosure like the MiniG.
HDforIndies.com is a good site to visit and learn more.
I'm not into video quite on this level, but the info should help.

  • Looking for drive config suggestions

I am going to reconfigure my Mac Pro to enable the use of all 4 tb of internal hard drive space. I currently use a software raid 10 array that seems unstable and I need more drive space anyway. I don't really need speed, just space and some redundancy.
I am thinking of changing the 4 internal drives to a software raid 0 array and using a 3tb 4 bay external usb drive (raid o as well) for Time Machine. I will also periodically copy my iphoto & itunes library to an external drive for off site storage.
I was looking into the highpoint 4320 and Raid 5 but I dont like the idea of being a possible victim of poor or slow driver coding when Snow Leopard arrives. I also understand people use one internal disk as a system disk and raid 0 the other 3 for content but I'd like to keep everything on one disk for simplicity.
Just trying to keep things as simple as possible with 8 disks in play. I would appreciate any suggestions.

PM is great for running more than 4 drives, and making better use of your PCI slots for controllers.
Even the Sonnet E2P $79 is 2-channel PM card.
Then buy an enclosure that supports PM.
Strongly recommend investing in FirmTek 5PM, costs but quiet and easy way to handle 4 drives direct connect.
    Buy a 2TB WD Green $299.
One 4-channel PM SATA controller can support up to 20 drives using 4 x 5-drive cases. That is 4-8TB per case and 15-30TB.
One enclosure as backup A, one as B, and one as 4-10TB of raw live data.
You can't go wrong with PCI SATA controller. There are a number of choices and options. AMUG and Barefeats have some ideas and reviews. Sonnet and FirmTek are easy for me to recommend and worked with both for 10 and 5 yrs respectfully.
So you have one enclosure now to get you started and while not PM at least you have something. Always nice to include the make/model so I can look at it.... (or did I miss that somewhere?). Just don't want you using USB for anything other than casual single drive duty.

  • 9148 design/config suggestion- newbie

    Hello experts,
We will be getting #2 9148s for our storage. First time working on these :). About 5 servers and storage with total 8 ports (all fiber).
Requirement on MDS1:  Server1's HBA port1  should communicate with all storage ports but not to any other servers HBAs ports.
Same for MDS2 as well. Sounds like common requirement to avoid unnecessary communication.
I went thru  documentation and few q&a in forum thinking of design like this... (looks weird, but hope you got the point :))...
      Server1                           Server2
    MDS1    MDS2              MDS1    MDS2
       \(4)          /(4)                 \          /
      Storage                           Storage
->No connection between MDS and let servers software deal with redundancy.
->Create separate VSAN on each MDS and Zoneset and Zone (ex: zone1,2,3..).
    ->Zone1: Server1 HBA port1+ Storage 4 ports
    -> Zone2: Server2 HBA port1+ Storage 4 ports  etc.
-> No need of enabling routing on MDS.
Will this work or any suggestions? Do I need to bundle the ports(4) to Storage on switch?
    Please advise.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi MS
Below you see the CLI commands; I forgot to mention that it is also best practise to use static domain id's.
    device-alias mode enhanced

fcdomain domain 12 static vsan 101
    system default zone distribute full
    system default zone mode enhanced
    zone mode enhanced vsan 100
    zone mode enhanced vsan 101
    zone name host_vios2-16_h1_a--VPLEX-Bal16-11-B-FE-0-a vsan 100

    member host_vios2-16_h1_a--VPLEX-Bal16-11-B-FE-0-a

For your small environment, I would use CLI; the alternative is DCNM SAN (GUI).
Reg. zoning: both methods work of course; however in the field, mostly single initiator - single target is done
    Good luck

  • PDA DAQ channels swapping

    Hi everyone.
I'm experiencing problems with a PDA based app collecting analog data from 6 channels. All advice appreciated.
Hardware is a Juniper Allegro CX, running Windows CE.net 4.20, Intel ARM X-scale processor, 128Mb RAM, NI DAQCard 6024E in expansion pod.
Development platform is LabVIEW 8.6 with PDA module.
DAQmx base has 6 channel continuous acquisition set up, channels 0 to 5, 100Hz scan rate, 1000Hz conversion rate, as task 'readg' (see code)
Acquisition seems to be running perfectly well for a while, then channels switch around. e.g. all channels grounded, except for channel 2 with 0.1HZ sine input from a sig gen and channel 3 hardwired to 3V. After 30 seconds or so the channels all move around by 2 positions, Ch2 readings move to Ch0, Ch 3 to Ch1 etc. After another 30 seconds they move again by 2 steps, and after another 30 seconds or so they move two further steps (so they are back where they started). This continues until app is stopped.
This thread suggests something similar, but doesn't run to conclusion so no solution there... http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=250&message.id=12209&query.id=3315#M12209
(side issue - can anyone tell me how to post a thread in a neater way than this?)
Struggling here. 100Hz per channel is fastest required by my app, it's needs to run for up to 15 minutes, and channels need to stay put!
I'm posting code from a calibration routine that's doing this. The routine is part of a larger application. Upper loop is handling user interface and sitting in part 2 in the idle mode, so shouldn't be interfereing with anything.
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.
    Bandit.

    Hi All
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, I was out of office for a while. In the meantime though, a colleague of mine has been trying to replicate the issue using a PDA we have here at the office. Unfortunately though, whenever he tried taking measurements, he was unable to see any evidence of channels swapping in this manner.
Thanks a lot for posting, Mike. Funnily enough, Sacha still remembers that problem and I spoke to him about it as we sit nearby in the office. He described to me the way that your SCXI channels were swapping due to a nearby radar system and it does sound very similar to this issue. Bandit, could you be experiencing similar interference in your location? Are there any RF sources in your area? Could you try taking the PDA to another location and trying it out there to see whether that makes a difference. I would expect that what we are seeing is due to something in hardware, rather than software, since all the drivers do is assume that the first sample will be from channel 1, second from channel 2, third from channel 3 etc. Therefore, there must be some kind of hardware glitch that is causing this. Could you give us any information about the expansion module you are using to connect your DAQcard to the PDA? There may be a possibility that this interface is somehow causing a glitch in the data.
In terms of dealing with the channel swapping, one suggestion could be to pass a known reference voltage down one channel and detect when this reference voltage has been switched to another channel. This will tell you when the switching has occured so then you could tailor your other channels accordingly. I believe this is the type of thing that Mike did to get round the issue. Can you confirm whether this is the case, Mike?

  • Restoring config on concentrator

I was looking for an outline of the restore procedure for a concentrator, but haven't found anything. Even the textbook I have regarding Cisco VPNs has nothing about the steps involved. Is it as simple as getting connection via http(s) or ssh and restoring a backup of the config, for example
    List of Files
    SAVELOG.TXT CONFIG CONFIG.BAK
    1) Delete File
    2) Copy File
    3) View File
    4) Put File via TFTP
    5) Get File via TFTP
    6) Swap Config Files
    7) Export XML File
    8) Import XML File
    9) Reformat Filesystem
    10) Back
and overwriting the current CONFIG file? Are there any gotchas here?
    thank you,
    Bill

yes, copy a good known backup to CONFIG and reboot.
As long as the file you backed up from is good, there are no gotchas.
The admin account password is NOT contained within the config file though.

  • Configure AIR-AP1231G-A-K9 for WGB (IOS 12.4(13d)JA

    Hello,
I am trying to configure one of our extra 1231 AP as a work group bridge. The AP was configured as a lightweight AP so I think that might be part of my issue.
This was the documentation I found to do the config: http://cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/12.4_3g_JA/configuration/guide/s43hot.html
However I do not have the commands available that they list.

Is this not possible with the IOS and AP that I have?

    Hi Eric,
I'm just curious, did you convert the AP back to IOS already?
    This can be converted to an Autonomous/stand-alone AP that you desire;
    Here is a conversion method;
Reverting the Access Point Back to Autonomous Mode
You can convert an access point from lightweight mode back to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS Release that supports autonomous mode (Cisco IOS release 12.3(7)JA or earlier). If the access point is associated to a controller, you can use the controller to load the Cisco IOS release. If the access point is not associated to a controller, you can load the Cisco IOS release using TFTP.
Using a TFTP Server to Return to a Previous Release
Follow these steps to revert from LWAPP mode to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS release using a TFTP server:
Step 1 The static IP address of the PC on which your TFTP server software runs should be between 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.30.
Step 2 Make sure that the PC contains the access point image file (such as c1200-k9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar for a 1200 series access point) in the TFTP server folder and that the TFTP server is activated.
Step 3 Rename the access point image file in the TFTP server folder to c1200-k9w7-tar.default for a 1200 series access point, c1130-k9w7-tar.default for an 1130 series access point, and c1240-k9w7-tar.default for a 1240 series access point.
Step 4 Connect the PC to the access point using a Category 5 (CAT5) Ethernet cable.
Step 5 Disconnect power from the access point.
Step 6 Press and hold MODE while you reconnect power to the access point.
Step 7 Hold the MODE button until the status LED turns red (approximately 20 to 30 seconds) and then release.
Step 8 Wait until the access point reboots, as indicated by all LEDs turning green followed by the Status LED blinking green.
Step 9 After the access point reboots, reconfigure it using the GUI or the CLI.
    Hope this helps!

  • How to install solaris 8 in 30 GB ata/100 drive ?

Solaris installation fails saying that there is no suitable hard disk or partition available in my system.
If I run format utility I can see the hard drive but
Solaris does not recognize it's partitions and requires me to enter nr of cyls, heads etc...
I do not go further because it may destroy my whole partitions.
have 30 GB ata/100 Seagate hard drive and there is
a 5 GB empty slot reserved for Solaris installation.
It's just after a 12.5 GB of first primary (with logicals) and just before a 10 GB of another primary.
    I've tried followings without success:
    1- Leaving 5 GB unpartitioned
2- Created a 5 GB primary partition without format
    3- Created a 5 GB ext2 (using linux) partition
    4- Created a 5 GB ext2 with ufs format
Everytime I've got same error, Solaris cant find a partition. I suspect it does not recognize hard disks larger than either 8 Gig or 1024 cylinders or ata/100.
    What can I do?

    The conflicting devices are:
    - PNP0C01
    - ISY0050
Unfortunately, I don't know what they are. :(

There isn't a way to -change- the actual disk names returned from format, at east that I've ever heard of.
When I discussed the lameness of the QLogic disk names I was told they Sun was planning on reintroducing the standard c#t#d# convention at some point in the future.

  • Wrt120n - wireless stopped working

I have a wrt120n router.  My desktop which is wired can still connect.   I have three laptops, all wireless and all were working fine.  Now they all show an excellent signal from the router but will not connect anymore.   I checked the router security settings and everything matches my laptop wireless configurations.   I have a Compaq running Vista, a Dell running XP and a Tobshiba running Windows 7 with it being the latest addition.  Any sugguestions?   -   Chad

I have the same problem as the OP.  I purchased my WRT120N about a week ago (shoulda bought the 160N, oops) and it's having all kinds of wireless issues.  About once or twice a day, with no discernible pattern, the four wireless devices I have will all lose connection.  My wired desktop has it's connection, and continues to work fine.  Both laptop and desktop are running XP.  The only way I have found to restore wireless connectivity is to unplug and then plug back in the router.
    Devices:
    Desktop
    Dell Laptop
    2 iPhones
    PS3
I just updated to the latest firmware (issue was experienced with settings that come out of the box), so we'll see if that helps.  I have yet to try the settings config suggested a few posts above, but if the firmware upgrade doesn't solve the problem I'll try that and report back my findings.  If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears.  I'll keep updating this post until I can figure this out.
Occasional drops in a router this price range are expected, but not two or more times daily, every day.

  • General Install question - 10g Server location on RAC

    Hi,
We are trying to install 10g Server on a 2 node cluster using Sun Solaris 8.
We are using Oracle CRS and this is configured for 2 nodes.
For both nodes to see an 10g server install, do we perform a local install of the server twice on each node, or on a shared disk(raw device)visible to both nodes.
Also, if we then add a new node does the 10g server install propogate to the new node, or do we have to install the 10g server software prior to adding the node to the RAC.
Any help and guidance would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • High I/O  waits

Any thoughts about why, when Streams capture processes are started up, the disk activity pegs i/o waits constantly high. It is pretty much slow down the whole database server.
This is the state of CPU when we have streams instance up and without any dml activity.
    CPU states: 0.4% idle, 17.9% user, 4.5% kernel, 77.2% iowait, 0.0% swap
Any suggestion to any parameters tweaking or recommendation is truly appreciated.

    Hi
I have found this also, and have just raised an ITAR on it. On our new 10G servers the Capture process constantly re-reads the whole of the current log file. On one of our servers it is reading 110MB of data / second. As soon as we stop the 2 capture processes it IO drops to nothing.
Is this exactly what you are seeing. Does anyone out there have any ideas on a fix.
    Thanks

Any insights are highly appreciated! Thanks!

Try this workaround for your problem and let me know the outcomes.
Solaris bootstrap uses Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)
for device configuration and MP interrupt routing.
    Try to disable your ACPI.
    Steps to follow:
    1) Use either eeprom(1M):
    # eeprom acpi-user-options=0x2
    ( OR )
    * Modify the Device Configuration Assistant (DCA) boot floppy.
Manually edit the /boot/solaris/bootenv.rc to add:
    setprop acpi-user-options 0x2
In this method is applicable for at the time of Solaris 8 installation.
DCA for Solaris 8 10/01 download it from this URL:
    http://soldc.sun.com/support/drivers/dca_diskettes/
The ACPI conflicts problem is not fixed and is resolved by disabling ACPI.
In the example you gave, while it is annoying, it probably does no harm. In
some cases it causes duplicate devices to show up, like two floppy or IDE
drives - neither of which work properly. Disabling ACPI is the safest way
to insure there will be no problems if this message shows up.
    2) Reboot the System.
    Hope it helps.
