Swap Space Recommendations
Hi,
Is there a recommendation when it comes to setting the swap space for the system running the endeca server?
We are using EID 2.3 on Linux.
Our machines are currently freezing once the swap space gets consumed.

Is the machine running Endeca Server also receiving incremental updates or does your solution operate as more of a "kill and fill" operation where the index is being fully loaded each time?
Some other information that would be helpful would be the size of your index and the amount of RAM available on the machine. If you're not comfortable sharing that, a ratio would also suffice (i.e. I have 48GB of RAM and my index size on disk is 12GB so the ratio of RAM to index size is 4:1).
Typically, I've seen the "high water mark" of addressable memory reach about 2 to 2.5x the index size. Keep in mind that it only ratchets up to that level on rare occasions when an index that has been in use for a while (warm cache) is in the final stages of a bulk update, the usual running amount is much lower. And of course, swap should only come into play when your available memory is constraining the system.

Using Oracle 10gR1, Solaris 9.

Memory size: 16384 Megabytesswap space is 16g
Pga_aggregate_target = 2G and after checking the v$pga_target_advice, it shows optimal.

This could mean some kind of bug (memory leakage for example), or it could mean plain old fashion abuse of memory. Like PL/SQL code that attempts to bulk fetch a few million rows from the database with a single go.
On checking Metalink note, it said its an unhandled Oracle exception; have to increase the swap space.Wrong IMO (unless you were not following the recommended swap size factor). If you have have a giant swap area..moving the wall a few meters away (by increasing swap) will only enable you to run faster into it - I doubt that this is the intent of that Metalink note.
On increasing the swap space, and restarting the instance, the system was normal.
Now why does oracle use up all the swap space and what can be the workaround to avoid this in future?Oracle only use what is needed to perform the client requests that it receives. If the client request a mountain of data to be moved/processed, Oracle will try to oblige. If that mountain topples and crushes server resources, it is not Oracle that is to blame for trying to do exactly what was requested from it. -

I have seen in the above discussions that reducing the the heap size (Xmx) would give a solution, can any one please suggest me how much do I have to reduce my Xmx.

Out of memory they can result from different causes:
- The application is consuming too many resources inappropriately
- The application is opening and not enough threads are closing, leaving no space for the JVM
- You lose the connection with database, causing the connection pool is saturated, which makes the memory of the container is depleted and reaches its peak.
- The container does not have sufficient resources or is not tuned to meet the load generated. But would recommend to discard the above before using this option, because when using this option could work around the problem but could not really be attacking the cause.

JVM Crash OutOfMemory Chunk::new Out Of swap Space

We are currently experiencing a problem on both JRE-1.5.0_15 and JRE-1.6.0_7. We have a JEE application running with EJB2 on JBoss 423 that we have migrated to EJB3 on JBoss5. The server is Windows 2003 SP2 server running in 32 bits mode (with /3GB option in boot.ini) is set up with 4GB memory and 4GB paging.
Before migration, this app runs perfectly on JBoss 423 compiled on JDK5 with runtime JRE5 and JRE6 (not at the same time though) up to 50 simulatneous users on a single JBoss instance.
After migration to EJB3, we are experiencing this error as of 5 simultaneous users :

We also have created a file with the list of methods we want to keep out of the JIT. With this option, the server runs longer but it eventualy crashes.
So we reckon this is a JIT issue on the App Server. I have posted a thread on JBoss forum but they recommended me to open one here.
So I have modified the JVM options to increase the Perm size :

Many thanks in advance for your help !I recently experienced a similar issue on HP-UX 11iv2 with WebLogic 9.1 and HP JDK 1.5, and we were also using the CMS (Concurrent Mark Sweep) GC. I was able to resolve the issue by forcing the size of the Survivor Area using the -XX:SurvivorRatio=n parameter. By setting this to a value lower than the default (I think 25) it forces the Survivor Area to be a larger percentage of the New Generation, and hence larger in size. I found that I needed at least 8MB, but we have a pretty large application, so you might get by with significantly less.
As it stands, your New Gen will be 25% (default, I think) of you Xms, and I think the default SurvivorRatio is 25. The tricky part is the calculation using the SurvivorRatio. Since there are two Survivor Areas, if -XX:SurvivorRatio=25, then each Survivor Area will be 1/27 of New Gen. Anyhow, it's confusing, but you can easily verify these numbers online, and do the math yourself, but hopefully you get the point.
Obviously, I can't guarantee anything, but you might want to give it a try since my symptoms were extremely similar. -

1. can you safely shrink the SGA ? you would need to check the AWR reports, or recommended sizes.
2. can you safely shrink the PGA ? you would need to check the AWR reports, or recommended sizes)
3. can you reduce the number of processes ? (are there lots of idle processes ?)
4. can you tune sql to use less memory ?
If you can't reduce allocated memory, check if you can add RAM to the server / container.
If you still think you need to increase swap, you may need to add another disk (what is /dev/md/dsk/d60 ?). You can easily google for the Solaris commands to add swap, but if you are not familiar with this process I would not recommend you do it by yourself. Ask Oracle Support to provide the commands, and TEST them on a DEV box, followed by reboots etc to confirm it works. -

I have prod and test on the same server on AIX 5.3 box. And application is 11i. It's not a good config but thats the way it is here. And for the last 6 months or so we are getting PGSP_KILL error in AIX log files. My server RAM is 8GB and as per Metalink docs, i first set SWAP SPACE to 0.75 times the RAM but still the same problem. Now i have set SWAP SIZE to same size of RAM(8GB). Still getting the same problem mainly when copying files to tape or taking cold backup. After this happens we get famouus FRM-92050 Failed to connect to server: xxxx.xxxx:9000. ans users can't login.
I have gone thru many metalink docs. But plz recommend me to as what swap size should i set. Or find the offending process which is taking more resources. In errpt is shows FNDLIBR is process which is consuming lot of swap space. But i dont know what to do now.

The Solaris 8 Advanced Installation Guide recommends allocating at least 512Mbytes of swap space before upgrading. Is this referring to swap disk or total swap space?
Do I need to allocate more swap space before upgrading to Solaris 8?

DIf you are using the "Installation" cd with Solaris 8 then it requires a minimum of 512 to store the "installer" in swap so it can do the installation. If you forego the use of the Installer CD and start the Installation with Disk 1 of 2 then you don't have to worry about swap issues. The Advanced Installation Guide seems to indicate that you should use the WebStart Installer but it is not needed.
If you are doing an upgrade then it will use what you already have set up as a swap slice. If you are doing an initial install then you can make swap whatever you want. -

I'm having RAID 1 and RAID 5. RAID 1 is partitioned into 3 drive letters, C, D, and E. RAID 5 got only 1 partition, which is drive F. C for OS, D for SAP Kernel, E for Transaction Log and F for SAP Data.
In which drive should I allocate for swap space and tempdb? Of course for better performance I should have got separate hard disk for these, but unfortunately I can't.
Any suggestion.
BTW, my platform is Windows 2003 Enterprise and SQL Server 2005.

Here Swap space for - Field description, Initial records, Program, CUA, Screen, Generic key, Export/import are appearing in red strips.
How can I increase the SWAP Space for these fields. please mention steps.

DSCFor Clearing the RED Swaps its better to restart the SAP Instance Periodically.
That will only take the issue away temporarely, won't fix anything.... small amount of swapping in not an issue but execessive buffer swapping will lead you to performance issues.
The answer is simple... you need to review your current settings and increase the buffer size of the areas with problems.
I recommend you to take course ADM315 - Workload Analysis AS ABAP

You changed the size of the pool but did you also make sure that the new swap space was initialized? iow; does "swap -l" really show more swap ? So just for possible future reference..
The easiest approach (IMO) is to simply create a new swap filesystem, then tell the system to start using it, then turn off your old swapspace.. So something in the likes of...
zfs create -o volsize=2G rpool/swap2
swap -a /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swap2
swap -d /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swapAnd bingo.
Off course if you're a detail nut like myself then having a name "swap2" really won't do. So you could also simply use swap2 as temporary space and then resize your initial swap while also re-initializing the swapspace on it. I'm not too sure if that is also performed during boot.. So something like this:
zfs create -o volsize=2G rpool/swap2
swap -a /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swap2
swap -d /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swap
zfs set -o volsize=2G rpool/swap
swap -a /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swap
swap -d /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swap2Ofcourse all of this will put a little load on the disks, and if you're going to reboot anyway then it might make more sense to use a rescue cd of some sort and perform the change manually. However, I'd still advice you to double check since I'm not too sure about swap space getting re-initialized during boot. All the docs I've found regarding this subject all speak of re-creating the swap space itself as well.
Edit: And if you'd be a ZFS nut unlike myself you'd realize that its also perfectly possible to rename a dataset. So instead of creating a new dataset and moving the swap again it would be sufficient to simply rename it from swap2 to swap again. IMO this is really the easiest and safest way to resize swap. And it doesn't even require a reboot! -
Is Swap space necessary?
We have an installation of oracle 8.1.7 that is going from development to production.
In production we have 4 GIGS of RAM. Is is necessary to have ANY swap space configured
with this much RAM? thanks!When you install oracle on UNIX, if the swap space is not enough the linking of the products will give you problems. Check your operating system specific manual for the recommended amount of swap space. It is usually double the RAM.

Swap space for multiple instaces on the same box

I'm fairly new to Linux and have a general question about configuring swap space on a Linux box running 10g. From the 10g: Managing Oracle on Linux for DBAs class, Oracle gives the following recommendations about swap size:
RAM (Swap)
<= 2Gb (150% of the RAM size)
Between 2Gb - 8Gb (Equal to the RAM size)
8Gb+ (75% of the RAM size)
It's not clear to me from reading the book if this recommendation is good for all Oracle processes running on the machine, or if it's a per instance value? The box has 16Gb of RAM but there are going to be three instances running on it and I need to verify that 12Gb of swap will support all three without issue or if I'll need to configure 12Gb swap per instance.
Appreciate any input.As noted earlier in this thread, swap space is an operating system property, and has nothing to do with software you want to run on top of it, like an oracle database.
The function of swap space is to be able cope with memory allocations beyond the amount of physical memory. In most occasions you do not want to use swap space, because it has a severe performance impact (memory blocks have to be exchanged from the swap device to physical memory).
(please mind that on some unixes (AIX and HPUX if I am not mistaking), swap is pre-allocated for processes which means the swap size is not only depended of operating system and memory size, but also the number of processes. Linux does not do that, it starts to allocate swap pages under memory pressure. There are certain issues with some memory settings in linux (linux kernel memory management is quite automatic) that can get your system to page. (memory overcommitting is one thing))
In my experience, the amount of memory which is used is depended on the amount of memory on the machine in most cases. Whilst this sound simple, think of it: with 2GB used, probably most DBA's would allocate approximately 1.5GB to the databases on that machine, if your machine got 16GB you probably want approximately 14GB to be used by the databases.
This means (for me) that I use swapspace with the same size as the amount of memory. That few extra GB's allocated to swap won't cost you or your company an arm and a leg, so have that for not running out of memory. -

Swap space problem on Windows XP
I'm trying to install BI Publisher on Windows XP from a zip file downloaded last week (version 10.1.3.3.2). However after starting setup.exe in the install directory I get the message that my swap space = 0 Mb while 500 Mb is required. After this the installation procedure quits.
I haven't got a clue as what the installer is referring to (swap on windows?) but I have plenty of room om my two (logical) disks, no spaces in the directory name from which I start the installer (D:\download\bipublisher\Windows\OBI\install) and about 1.5 Gb of memory free.
Any hints what to do would be appreciated.

In computer operating systems that have their main memory divided into pages, paging (sometimes called swapping) is a transfer of pages between main memory and an auxiliary store, such as hard disk drive.[1] Paging is an important part of virtual memory implementation in most contemporary general-purpose operating systems, allowing them to easily use disk storage for data that does not fit into physical RAM. Paging is usually implemented as a task built into the kernel of the operating system.
Windows 3.x creates a hidden file named 386SPART.PAR or WIN386.SWP for use as a swap file. It is generally found in the root directory, but it may appear elsewhere (typically in the WINDOWS directory). Its size depends on how much swap space the system has (a setting selected by the user under Control Panel → Enhanced under "Virtual Memory"). Please check this file.

It just won't even let me click. I've tried downloading and using FireFox and several sites that ask you to allow. The mouse can hover over the buttons. Lion just won't let me click. I just bougt my first mac today, and I got a free download of Lion.

Hi All, I am using ESS/MSS. While generating reports I am getting an error. In MSS , I am able to select the report in first step and in second step I am able to define selection criteria. But when I try to get report results( as results will be show
