Switching Audio Channels

I hope I recorded on 2 separate audio channels with my Sony PD-170 - one for wireless mic and the other for on-camera mic.
Presently, I am getting equal/unison audio levels in my Audio Meter Window, for both left and right. Does this mean I only recorded on one channel?
How do I check both audio channels on FCP?
I hope this makes sense.
Unfortunately, I only have one working computer speaker at the time.
Thanks very much for your time!

To find out if you captured as mono or as a stereo pair, double click the clip to load it into the Viewer window. If both audio channels are on one tab, it's a stereo pair. If they're on separate tabs, they're mono.
To toggle the clip between stereo and mono, select (highlight) the clip and hit Option l (lowercase L). If they are mono (or once you've changed them to mono), you can adjust the level of each channel independent of the other.

  • Audio channels 1 & 2 switch L/R mid-project

I'm using FCP 6.0.5. I have created a project that uses a pair of mono audio files on channels 1 and 2. In the past this has always corresponded to L and R. With my most recent project, channel 2 switches from L to R at an edit point, and channel 1 switches from R to L (though it's not at an edit point). I can't figure out why this has happened, or how to prevent it.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Yes, this is what I was thinking, too.
In this instance, I've got two identical files pasted one after the other - and at the edit point it switches from L to R.
An accidental keypress seems possible, but what shortcut key could cause this? I can't even figure out how to specify which audio channel is specified as Left or Right. I'd always assumed that channel 1=Left and channel 2=Right.

  • How do I export from FCP to a QuickTime file with multiple audio channels?

I'm delivering a project where the first step is to generate an HD Cam SR master, which I will be doing at a post-production lab. They will then do a QC check for me. To generate this HD Cam SR master, they need to me to bring in my 98-minute long movie on a firewire hard drive, in five equal parts -- QuickTime files. From these five QT files, the lab will then be creating an HD Cam SR master that will have...
dialogue on tracks 1 and 2
effects on tracks 3 and 4
music on tracks 5 and 6
    MY QUESTION
    a) I don't see any way to separate these audio tracks accordingly in the FCP menu for QuickTime export. Does anyone have any experience doing this?
    b) And does anyone know the most efficient way to combine timeline audio tracks for this purpose? I have my dialogue sitting on the first FOUR audio tracks, actually. To deliver this film, I'll need to crush these four audio tracks to two, as listed above. I could generate an AIFF file, I suppose, import it back onto the timeline, sync it up, and then re-export along with the visuals to make the final QT file, but this seems like a generation loss.
    thanks,
    Shanked
PS the movie is made up of footage from a Sony PMW EX1. I used the codec "XDCAM 1080 24p 35mbs VBR" for editing in FCP. I'll either export to QT using this same codec or switch to "Apple ProRes" if my machine can somehow maintain the sync.

The following will answer both your questions a) and b).
Click on your master timeline and press cmd+0 (zero) to bring up Sequence Settings, then click on the Audio Outputs tab on the right. Click on the Outputs option and change it to 6. You can leave them as Stereo pairs.
Now, back on your timeline, you need to make sure all your audio is organised so each track. A1, A2, A3, A4 etc has all the relevant media on it.
Then, on the left of the timeline you see the Destination toggle buttons, then you see the Padlocks to lock tracks, then you have the Toggle Auto Select squares. If you right-click on the Toggle Auto Select squares you bring up a little sub-menu, at the top of this list you'll see Audio Outputs, which will show the stereo channels for that particular track. As you've changed the number of Audio Outputs in the Sequence Settings, the list will show: 1&2, 3&4, 5&6. You just tick whichever channels you want.
In your case, you have dialogue on the first 4 tracks, no problem, just go down through tracks 1,2,3 and 4 as described above and assign these to Audio Outputs 1&2.
Then just go down through your music and effects audio tracks and assign them accordingly.
Now, when you export your timeline as a self-contained media file, it will have different audio channels.
I hope that makes sense. When you change the number of audio outputs as described in the first step, I believe the rest of it is fairly self explanatory, once you know where the settings are.

  • How to show different recorded audio channels in timeline

I've recorded an interview with two microphones (one was really bad, so I only want to use the other recorded microphone). I imported the clip from the tape camera into FCP X. Now in FCP X on the timeline I only see one audio track when I seperate it from the video. The two microphones seems to be 'mixed'. This was different in FCP 7 where you see both audio channels seperated.
How do I manage to seperate the 2 audio channels into 2 channels. I'v troed with Channel Configuration via Audio Inspector but I do not understand it.
    Thanks, Pim

Select the clip in the timeline and in the audio tab in the inspector in the channels seection switch to dual mono. You can switch off a track here if you wish.

  • Embedding 4 audio channels in DVCAM

A distributor wants a DVCAM tape of a recent project that we did. We performed the downconversion (it was recorded on HD) and the director and producer proceeded to do an audio commentary for it.
Now the distributor wants a DVCAM tape with the project audio on the first two channels and the audio commentary on the third and fourth channels.
I'm outputting the movie through a Sony DSR-25 deck.
How do I embed 4 audio channels onto a single DVCAM tape and not have any cross-mixing between them? Essentially, anyone who wants to listen to the commentary will switch from audio channel 1&2 to 3&4 with no problem.
    Many thanks.

I may not be much help here, but DVCam tape records four track audio only in the 32k audio mode. It's a legacy feature from the early days--not used much anymore. (It was helpful in the olden days when the editing systems were linear, as opposed to non-linear.) Although you'd have four channels, as I recall they are two stereo pairs, not four separate tracks. What you described in your last line is how playback works (at least for monitoring): select either tracks [1&2] or [3&4]--or it might have been [1&3] or [2&4]. Regardless, the two pairs are not mixed in any way.
What you are looking to do is possible, but the deck and FCP have to support it. FCP used to, but a quick look at 5.1.4 indicates Apple may have dropped it.
The distributor knows what they are talking about, but I'm not aware of anyone using 32k audio anymore. If what they want is a separate audio track for a DVD, suggest a 48k two track DVCam tape and a separate audio file with the comment tracks on a disc.

  • Capturing 4 Audio Channels - HDV???

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is NOT possible to capture 4 audio channels all at once in FCP?
If this is this case, how do you go back and capture in another pass? Right now I can only capture the two channels that go along with the onboard mic, and not the channels that go with the XLR audio (in this case a Lav Mic.)
I've tried to create a new capture preset, but it doesn't seem to work w/HDV.
Should I try capturing the audio in a second pass using standard def? Would that work?
Any thoughts would greattttttttttttly be appreciated.
    Thanks!

As Thomas suggested in that thread, "Capturing Multiple Audio Channels", in chapter 20 of the the FCP User Manual is a great resource. But I'll break it down for you anyways...
Here's how I capture 4-tracks of audio via Firewire with Final Cut Pro:
    Go to -
Final Cut Pro Menu/Audio/Video Settings.../Capture Presets Tab
Create two capture presets (1 set for the first two channels, the 2nd set for the last two channels and maybe one for all 4 channels mixed if you'd like)
Select a Capture Preset and choose Edit then set which channels you'd like the preset to capture inside the Quicktime Audio Settings section of the Capture Preset Editor window. Make sure your device is plugged in and turned on or else the option will be greyed-out.
Open the Log and Capture window in the Capture Settings tab and select which Capture Preset you'd like to use depending of which audio channels you'd like to capture.
To make sure you're caturing 4-channels on your camera:
    Go To-
    Menu/Audio Setup/Audio Mode/ 12bit 1/2 , 3/4
Throw the phones on and monitor the channels using the Audio Monitor button on the side of the camera. You can switch between monitoring the first 2, the second two, or all four channels at once. Remember if the camera is set to record 4 channels then it'll record 4 channels no matter what channels you're monitoring.

  • 4 audio channels into two

I have footage with 4 audio channels of a presenter giving a talk. Channels 1&3 and 2&4 appear to be from the same or simliar sources. I am not sure whether the paired sources are each from a single mic with different levels or separate mics. Can you advise the best way to combine these to get two channels of mono that could be balanced on the timeline to provide a stereo output.

    Thanks Jim,
That's helpful, but it raises more issues. To try and see where this all
came from, I just did a test with my Sony PMW200. The two onboard mics were
switched off and separate mics attached to Ch1 and Ch2. Bringing in the MXF
files straight into Ppr results in 8 channels on the timeline. CH1 and Ch3
appear to be replicated as do CH2 and CH4. The other four channels are
blank. Sony assures me that the settings are correct on the PMW200 to
achieve two mono channels on the external inputs only. What am I doing
    wrong?

  • Audio Channels in Timeline

Can I break out audio channels, or eliminate a R channel once I've dropped it into the timeline? I have separate mics on L and R channels, and want to just choose the L channel mic.  But I failed to set channels on all clips before moving into the timeline.

You'll get different suggestions/methods, but what I use is the FILL LEFT and FILL RIGHT audio effects. If you want just the mic on the left channel of a stereo clip, add FILL LEFT and then you will only get the left channel audio, on BOTH the L and R channels.
To expand on that, you could copy/paste to duplicate the clip, and add LEFT to one clip and RIGHT to the other, and then mix them as if they were seperate channels to start with. Or, add razor cuts to single audio clip at points where you want to switch mics L or R, then alternately apply the effect as needed to each segment and add audio crossfade at cuts. Many ways to work with it.

  • Drop-out of one audio channel

Hello all. When I drag a clip into the canvas, only one audio channel appears. This started about a day ago. No idea why it happened. I never had a problem before. I always had two channels. I know it's not the clips or my tape deck -- I tested them. I assume I changed an audio preference by accident. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Thanks. M

how about the track assignment switches on the let of your timeline? are they in order? If any of them appear disconnected (seperated) then your channels wont be placed on the timeline. If so click to toggle the connection on and of.

  • Hearing only one audio channel in source window & in timeline

    Hi all,
As most of you I get a lot of footage where the audio is split - left channel for gun-mic\\front-mic and right channel for neck mic.
A lot of times I want to preview only one audio channel in the source window.
I cant find a way to do it.
Also whan I try to hear\monitor only one channel when the clip is in the timeline - its a problem -
the only way I know is by using the fill Left\Fill right effect - it is good when I do the final mix
but sometimes I just want to hear one of the channels.
without the tidius way of adding an effect just to preview something and then deleting it.
I'm sure there a way to do this - right?
    thanks!

Thank you very much for replying
Select the clip in the Project Window and duplicate.
Select duplicated clip > clip > Audio Options > Source Channel Mapping.
Disable one of the channel and hit OK
Place this clip on the timeline and ALT + double click so it will open in the Source Monitor.
This is a very messy and unconfterble way to work - because I need to toggle this every time I want to switch channels to monitor.
Instead of adding the effect fill left/right you can toggle the effect on and off for the whole track in the Audio mixer.
This is a nice solution when I work on the timeline - but it won't help when I go on the source footage.
I think the only way to switch channels for a quick preview in premiere is by buying a Sound card with a channel switcher - or using a mixer...
    so dissapointing...

  • Audio channels out of sync

I suddenly have one audio channel that is out of synch with the other audio channel. . The out of sync audio channel shows +5.22. The other audio channel does not show it is out of sync, but the video channel shows the same red +5.22.
I tried to lock the vidio and the clear audio channel, and then select the out of sync audio channel to move it into sync with the other audio channel. However, the locked channels were also selected so I could not move only the out of sync audio channel.
I hope I have explained this clearly enough. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
IMac 20 G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   150 GB HD and 200 GB external LaCie HD

Piero's is the way to do it. It sounds as if the sequence has been badly messed up. You may need to switch off stereo pairs if that's on, or switch off linked selection, move the items into sync. If there are items in the way you may have to spread items onto multiple tracks.
    All the best,
    Tom

  • Multiclip--select all audio channels

    Hi,
I am making a three camera multiclip. I would like to select between three video angles but keep all 3 audio channels playing simultanously.
The manual is not very clear about keeping all the audio tracks playing while switching between video angles. I have tried most of the choices but I usually get either a single audio track (angle 1 audio) only or the audio angle switches with the video angle.
Is it possible to play all three audio tracks while switching the video angle in a multiclip?
    Thank you,

I have found the problem, damn it, i should have tried it earlier xD..
maybe this will help some people having the same problem because:
They have removed alsa from the DAEMONS array (is needed to store sound levels) because they thought with pulseaudio it is not needed!

  • Audio Channel

Help ! i know flash player cant controlling the audio channel
( left and right channel ) when playing the fla file.
My *.fla file are the karaoke song. How on my programming to
    solve this matter

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Go to System Preferences>Sound>OutPut. Make sure that the sound balance is not set all the way to "R" or "L".

  • Determining which audio channel a timeline clip came from

    Hello,
How can you tell whether the source of an audio clip in the timeline came from channel 1 or channel 2 on the master? I've tried Clip Properties but that only shows which timeline track it's in (which is fairly obvious if you've just selected it).
    Many thanks!!
    -- Sean

Sean, its a very good question that sadly has an hopelessly inadequate answer.
Of course FCP does know exactly which specific channel of audio (from a multi-channel source) that it's referencing, but there's just no easy way of determining which channel that is after the edit has been made. In some situations I can see exactly how and why that would certainly be very useful, just as it would be useful (especially in fast turn around editing) to be able to simply reassign an edit instance's audio source channel after the fact eg to be able to target an audio clip instance and simply switch it's content from say ch1 to ch2 of the source.
As it stands, although it's possible to do this in other NLE's its not yet possible in FCP. As always, you can send feedback to Apple's FCP development team at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html
Ok, heres what you can do If its absolutely essential that you correctly identify your edit's audio clip's channel sources: you need to export your sequences as XML files (File > Export > XML). The exported XML will contains the full make up of your edit, including every clip instances audio channel sources. Its not especially human readable but neither is it encrypted, its just a plain text file .... so you can open it up in Text Edit and figure it out.
    Cheers

  • Premier Pro C.C.2014 combining separate AVCHD audio channels into one?

I am having an issue when it comes to working with AVCHD audio in P.P.C.C. 2014. I have gone through and done the proper importing of the video multiple times through the media browser.
But every time I put a clip into the timeline, it will put my channel 1 and channel 2 audio on the same audio channel. It's as though it isn't even reading the separate audio channels.
I spent two hours on chat with Adobe tech support to no avail. He said that Adobe did support AVCHD files, but that I should try to record my audio on a separate external device. That obviously is not going to happen nor is it correct, as the camera has two XLR audio inputs, so there are two different audio channels.
Has anyone had to deal with this issue and if so, are there any resolutions?

i haven't played with any footage like this to be sure the best way to do this... however the default sequence is set for stereo, as in two channels (left/right). if you have more than that, say 3 or 4 channels then you may need to create a sequence using multichanel in order to have global controls thru the mixer panel, to disable channels 1/2 and use only 3/4.  it may be possible to highlight all your clips in the timeline, right click and choose the "audio channels" option to switch them to channel 3/4.  if its two recordings into two channels, i think the "audio channels" will be the way to go. "audio channels" option is available in the project bin as well, under modify.
