Symbol output using VISA but it suppose to be normal string

i used VISA to retrieve data from device(TADATAKER). when i unload the historical data to my computer. The data come out all symbols and i am sure that the data is in normal string format because i can receive it correctly in using VB.How to solve it?Is it the computer speed will affect the VISA or the VISA time out problem to receive data?I also not really understand the time out function. If within the time out the VISA also cant receive data it will gv a error message.How do i know when the device will return data to computer.why it can not stand there and keep going receive data without gv error.What is the best time out number or how to determine it?

please post the exact VISA query you are using.
As far as the timeout, I rarely change the value. I usually set it to 2 seconds and leave it alone unless I have a very long operation coming up. There is one particular setting a have to use on my power meter to measure a very low duty cycle noise waveform. The power meter can take up to 45 seconds to settle and return data. So before I send the query command I set the timeout to 45000mS. I believe you can set it to a very very large value. Check the VISA manual. ]
The purpose for the timeout function is so that if you make a query and the instrument is not connected to the bus, or has an internal problem, or there is some other failure, your program doesn't have to just lock up. The query will fail with
a timeout and your code can use the error information to notify the operator of the problem. So set it to some reasonable value and change it when you start a long operation.
You mention using VB, but it is unclear if you are still using it. What are you programming with now? That may also be helpful to solving your problem.

Multiple inputs and outputs using DAQmx VIs

Hello,
I am fairly new with the LabView programming language. I have a few training books that I have been reading, and I have been following online tutorials and reading the forums. However, I have come to a problem where I don’t see a clear solution. I am using LabView 2009 (9.0f3) and DAQmx VIs.
I am using a NI 9172 chassis PLC, with two 9201 AI cards, 9217 AI RTD card, 9472 DO card, 9263 AO card, and two 9237 AI Bridge cards.
I am reading eight analog inputs with the 9201 cards, two analog RTD inputs with the 9217 card, three digital outputs with the 9472 card, three analog outputs with the 9263, and eight analog inputs with the 9237 cards.
I wrote a simple program to test one digital output task, two of the analog output tasks, and a single analog input task. I put all of them in the same while loop, and it worked perfectly. However, when I add analog input tasks to the same loop, I get an error 200022. So I tested each sensor individually by changing the channel before each run. I searched error 200022 and found that this is because I cannot start another analog input task until the previous one ends. With this said, I don’t know how to acquire an analog voltage in the same task as an analog RTD voltage. Both inputs take different constants in the start task DAQmx icon.
Attached is my test program. It is titled “Test All”. This is the program I used to test the various sensors. I tested the input sensors one at a time, and it worked fine. A few tasks are written just to test functionality, and will be added to later. The data is only displayed on the screen. I will add triggers and data write to disk functions later. This program works now, but if I add more analog inputs, it will generate the 200022 error.
Can someone show me how to correctly write the code for multiple inputs and outputs using DAQmx? All training materials and tutorials I can find all show a single input or single output, not multiples of each. Thanks for looking.

Labview isn't cheap, but it would certainly allow you to build a program (set of vi's - virtual instruments) that would do what you describe. Where would the timecode information come from? Your vi, or program, would: Start up, initialize the serial port, loop until a trigger happened, read the timecode (from where?), output that timecode out the serial port in a loop until you pressed the stop button. There is a free evaluation of Labview software available from NI - the base product itself runs about $995.

You really should use a DC motor controller to control a DC motor, look at the 754410 IC for a good example. You should be able to interface these to most DAQ devices.

I've tried to use hierarchy node variables, but it seems like you can't specify a attribute of the hierarchy such as level. So with the WBS hierarchy, if you create a hierarchy node variable, you specify the WBS value to select (If I understand this correctly). I wish I could instead specify "give me all the WBS nodes that happen to have the value of the level attribute greater or equal to 3. If I understand Juergens post, he is saying make security access so that only certain WBS levels can be returned in the query. I suppose we can try that, but that would then preclude getting the level 1 and 2 in the future if the authorization is global.

Controlling two GPIB instruments using VISA

I'm using Labview 5.1.1 (unfortunatly I have no way of getting a better version) and I want to control a multimeter and a powersupply. I need the power supply to vary it's output while the multimeter reads the data for the different power supply outputs. This means that the multimeter and power supply need to work synchronously. How can I do this using VISA? or is there an easier way?

This isn't really operating "synchronously" - you're really just trying to set up a closed-loop system. Is there an easier way? Yes. Check if the power supply has remote sense capability. This does exactly what you're trying to do. This is a far better solution that trying to perform the closed-loop system in software. In fact, I would get a different power supply if the one you have doesn't have remote sense capabilities, but that's just me.
If you *really* had to do in software you basically have to set up a while loop that get the measurements from the multimeter, compares it to the desired setting, sees if it's within your desired "error", calculates how much delta to apply to the programmed voltage for the power supply (taking into account that the
programming resolution of the power supply won't be the same as the measurement resolution of the multimeter), and the programs the power supply to the new, corrected, setting.
Still say you're better off with a power supply with remote sensing.

i'm a new user of labview 7.0 and trying to communicate with philips function generator PM5191. when i'm communicate using instrument io assistant, the front panel of the PM5191 is changing and i can get the output signal as i set in the string, but when i communicate using VISA, the front panel is changing but i cannot get the expected output from the PM5191. why?

How do I use VIs developed on LabView v8.2.1 with a system running LabView v7?

Hi...I need to use VIs developed on v8.2.1 for a Network Analyzer on another system having v7.0. Is there any way to down-convert or save VIs for previous version 7.0? I checked the 'save with options' menu but could only find v8.0 in the list of previous versions. Thanks.

Hi Omkar,
to save it for LV 7.0 you need LV 8.0 and as far as i know LV 7.1. With LV8.0 you can save it for LV7.1 and with 7.1 you can save it for 7.0. If you have only a few vi´s you can ask someone here in the forum if he can help you.
