Synaptics, acpi issues, battery status

I have a laptop with poor acpi support. The battery status reports correctly for about an hour of use then the icon turns black and acpi -bs shows the batter not to be present. I have heard that this can be fixed by setting up the kernel for EC polling mode instead of IRQ mode. I don't really understand what this means or how to do it though.
I'm running the 2.6.28 kernel.
Another problem I'm having on my laptop is that my xorg.conf has the mouse setup as a USB mouse, while it's actually a touchpad. I've tried configuring it according to the wiki, but any time I try to put anything regarding a touchpad or synaptics in xorg.conf, It ruins my X server and I have to regenerate xorg.conf to get gdm running again. The way the mouse is currently set up I can't use side scrolling.

Also my webcam doesn't work. It's a bisoncam, and I thought the uvcvideo module was supposed to work for them but it doesn't seem to. "dmesg | grep video" seems to detect it, but I can't get any webcam apps to load.

    Hi Tarun 49,
If you are having issues with your iPhone such as you describe, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
iOS: Force an app to close
Next, I would try restarting the iPhone -
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

  • Missing Blackberry Battery Status Indicator

I've looked all over the web, my instruction manual, the index inside the phone, and in still cannot find the meaning of this symbol in the middle of my battery bar. From what I've seen on the internet, its as almost as if it does not exist. I would probably believe so if it was not for the fact that I am staring at it right now as I type this. I have had problems with the USB port on it before and I am pretty sure that has something to do with it.  Also when Its plugged into the computer and the port and USB are  finally working in unison, the computer says that it is malfunctioned.
The icon appears when I've tried to connect to it to a computer or even sometimes to an outlet. It looks like a C or parentheses with a scrunched up 3 sort of like this:
    C    3
    or
     (    3
I was surprised that no one else has seen or inferred about this icon and even more surprised that a complete index of all battery status indicators would exist; including those for malfunctioned or damaged batteries.  Any help or recommendations to help me solve this problem is greatly appreciated.

    Hi silvaback75
Can you send us a picture of this icon?

  • (SOLVED) Conky and battery status

How come this will not work on my system:
    ${color red}$alignc Battery Information
    ${color lightgrey} Currently: $battery
    ${color lightgrey}$stippled_hr
I have tried a dozen scripts for battery status and nothing works. Does anyone have a sure fire way to get some status from my battery?
I am using a netbook, pretty standard stuff. I don't know why it won't work. I tried other commands and one returned "U" for unknown battery status and what not. How can I find out what is going on?
    edit:
    Battery: ${battery_percent BAT0}% ${alignr}${battery_bar 8,70 BAT0}
This displays 0% and an empty bar.
I went ahead into /proc/acpi/battery and found BAT1 and no BAT0, so I changed the script and I get a percent now...
This may be solved, but I am going to try the other functions to see if I can get the output I wanted in the first place.
    Why does Conky hate batteries?
Last edited by Google (2010-07-02 07:16:26)

"$battery" does not work because it assumes as default BAT0, which you don't have so it will have to be "$battery BAT1". See "man conky" for more info....

  • Excite Pro - Battery Status Indicator at 0%

Battery status indicator is stuck at 0% - battery holds charge ok just don't know what it is. I presume the battery stats file is corrupted - is the only way to fix it a factory reset?
Calibration either needs root - not possible or 60% charge - won't work as says 0%!!!!

I think you should set it to factory settings.
Press and hold power button and volume up button. Then in the menu choose factory reset.
If this will not work, then the issue must be related to hardware failure

  • The battery status light on my N200

The battery status LED, on my N200 is ALWAYS on, its on even if it is running from batteries, or if it is on AC power, even if its fully charged the status light stays on..
is this normal? its a status light....so it should not be "always" ON, right?
Our sweetest songs tell of saddest thought

Ok, you are not resetting the TC.. that is just restarting it. Resetting means to hold in the reset button or use the utility to reset it.
When you say it goes dark, you mean it is not lit at all??
Do any errors show up in the airport utility?
I would say the TC is faulty but it maybe just a very minor issue if the wireless and backup is working.
I would recommend a full factory reset.
    Unplug the TC power cord.
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in whilst you power the TC on.. it is helpful to have a friend (unless you have 3 arms).
Keep holding in reset without release for about 10sec after power on, until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and now redo the setup of the TC.. this will not harm any info on the hard disk but will reset the TC to factory and you will need to redo the setup.
I recommend this time around use all names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. Apple names have issues even with apple products.. see C9 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Once you have it setup again.. does the front LED now go green.. if not you might still have issues with the utility .. clear or ignore them.. what happens now??

  • Battery status icon meaning (?)

this seems like a dumb question, but i can't for the life of me find any apple document that explains what the battery status icons mean.
there's one with a lightning bolt and one that looks like a power plug.
i'm assuming that lightning bolt = charging and power plug means it's running off the adapter and the battery is fully charged?
i'm on a new macbook pro now, but the reason i ask is that in my old powerbook it was giving me both readings even while charging, so i'm confused...
probably due to faulty power adapter, which i've gone through like 4 of them....(due to them shorting out because they always seem to be on the wrong side of the computer from where i need to plug it in, and therefore causing connection problems due to the bend in the cord).
can anyone confirm what the icons mean?

    thanks.
the reason i'm asking now is that i have a separate issue that doesn't seem to be a problem yet. my current magsafe adapter's green light seems to go out when it's fully charged, if i wiggle it, it comes back on. but in any case, it charges normally and the battery icons function as they are theoretically supposed.
i live overseas and have converted many of my friends to mac's in the last few years, but everyone seems to have the same problem with these chargers, that the plugs short out near where they connect to the computer, this is due to apple putting the power plug on the side of the machine. many times you have to plug it into a wall on the opposite side, and it bends the cord, and after time it starts to fail.
i don't think it's happened yet to this charger, but i wanted to make sure...i swear that i saw the "plug" icon in my battery status with my old powerbook as it was charging, and the lights didn't correspond to what they were supposed to be.
    anyway, thanks!

  • My iPad 2 wifi keeps rebooting , and it doesn't update the battery status . Can anyone help me with this one?

My Ipad 2 keeps rebooting and it doesn't update the battery status anymore.

I had this problem for quiet sometime now, and I would really appreciate your help. THANKS

I did try restoring the ipad a couple of times and it didn't do the trick. I also tried updating the firmware.
The only thing that worked for a while when the ipad - on it's own - rebooted itself into a black screen with white text and automatically fixed the issue. It worked perfectly for a couple of months but it came back after I forgot to charge the ipad , does anyone know how I can force the ipad into that screen again ?

  • Battery status icon in menu bar not changing

My battery status icon in my menu bar either does not change it's status at all, or takes a long time to change after I plug in, or unplug, my power cord.
I'm not sure what to even try. I've tried removing it from the bar and adding it back with no luck.
This seems to have happened since the latest Software Update for 10.6.5. I have Build 10H574.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Chris

After charging, my indicator stays at 100%. The only way I've found to find out the real status is to put it to sleep, then wake it up again, then stare at it for about 2 or 3 minutes until it refigures the percentage. I got this battery as a Christmas gift and installed it 3 days ago. I calibrated it per instructions. This is very annoying. I can never quite relax because I'm afraid it's about to run down to zero.
I'm on a Macbook Pro pre-2008. My new battery came from the Apple store. It's my 3rd battery on this computer and I've never had this problem before. (I hope you find the answer. I rarely go to the Genius Bar, but I've been there twice this week for other issues--I feel like a knucklehead going back a third time so soon). If I find a solution, I'll try to post it here.

  • When charging, the battery status from 95% suddenly jumps to 100%

    Hi Guys!
I just bought my Xperia Z1 last month, i haven't full charge to 100% my battery since the the first 8H charging the time i bought. I always charge when the status 20% and below, but never flat. Now I noticed that the battery status from 95% suddenly jump on to 100% within a matter of seconds.
Please help.... don't know the cause, is my battery already damaged or spoiled?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well with any battery you need to cycle it completely once ina  while. Charging it from 20% back to 100% is actually detrimental if you do it on a regular basis.
Sometimes let your phone dicharge completely then charge it completely to 100%.
The issue you are facing however could also be due to the battery capacity being detected wrongly.
Try going to *#*#7378423#*#*  on your dialer and go to diagnostics and check battery health.. if it reads over 300000 then you are fine... Its not your battery.
Don't forget to give Kudos and / or mark the correct answer.

  • Battery status + drive clicking

Hi, I need to know if there is a systematic problem with the battery before I lose income by taking it in for a service. The battery status is random and goes all over the place. Sometimes it shows 10:00, then 4:49 then drops to 3:30 then i go look again its back to 4:30. Sometimes it's said I only had 2.5 hrs of life yet when its been on power all the time.
My other issues is, if i move the laptop only slightly while powered up, I get the heads of the drive clicking slightly. It's constantly clicking when parking when idle which is also iritiating but this is like a louder click.
Both of these faulty ? I wouldn't be surprised, which is why they make you pay extra for warranty to protect yourself from their cheap and nasty parts, that party doesn't make sense, they should build to last 3 years standard.
    Let me know thanks.

    electroteque wrote:
Sorry to alarm, its not the click of death. The drive normally clicks when parking heads when idle. This one is a little louder whenever the laptop is being moved. Im pretty sure its the drive, maybe its the superdrive. Something is doing it though.  Here is my power info,

      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          -1959
      Voltage (mV):          11818
Notice charge remaining, the power info says 2:54, there is 3/4 bars on the battery status. Is this an OSX bug ?
You cannot depend on the time estimates. It's like asking you how long you can walk. Well, it depends on a lot of things, like how hot it is, if you're pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with 1000lbs up a 45 degree slope, etc. That estimate, even if it was correct, is only a snapshot in time. Once variables change, so do the estimates.
Condition normal and 19 cycles is good, but I'm not sure what's up with the amperage. Try the SMC reset and see if anything improves.
Note: these batteries have their own little microprocessors in them, and they do not seem to be nearly as hardy as logic board CPUs . . . .

  • How reliable is the Battery Status Indicator?

I have had my MacBook Pro for a month now, and I don't know if I can trust my battery status indicator a the top of the MacOSX screen
It usually goes a lot shorter than the indicated percentage or the calculated battery life time.
I have another issue with this MBP.
Has anyone actually been able to use MBP for as close to 5 hours which is the battery life posted on the apple website?
I set my MBP to lowest backlight, no programs or widgets running, wireless and bluetooth off and kept it one for hours. The battery lasted a about 3hours and 49 minutes. Is there something wrong with this battery?

As you use your MBP on battery it collects information on your battery usage style and uses that to predict battery run times. based on that it's reasonable accurate providing you calibrate your battery ever 4-8 weeks or so. Also, the data it collects the more accurate it can predict your battery time.
Once you start using your MBP differently though the accuracy can vary but should still remain "reasonably" accurate.
I personally find the times reasonably accurate altough for the most part I run off the percentage rather than time.
Has anyone actually been able to use MBP for as close to 5 hours which is the battery life posted on the apple website?
No-one will ever get 5 hours. As you note from the specs it's "based on usage" or more to the point, it's non-usage. Those time are achieved by having it on my not being "used".
Average battery times should range from 2.5-4 hours depending on your actual usage.

  • Cant get battery status anymore

For a week now I cant see my battery status anymore. I'm not sure if it was an upgrade or a pacman -Syu that caused it. I cant even open the adesklet systemmonitor, gkrellm shows no info and the battery in e17 has no info. When I do modprobe this is the output:
    # modprobe battery
    FATAL: Module battery not found.
    I have a ECS Green 553 laptop.
    A related issue:
I have powersave, but powersave -s just gives me "unknown reply code to 'BatteryState' reques". This appears as a bug and a fix was issued for debian 24 may it seems. What about arch?

Found it out. I have to boot with the battery in.. I thought udev or something would detect that there was a battery inserted ?? How can I load it if I didnt have it in when I booted?

  • Battery status, and iStat Menus random freezes

So this weird bug i've been experiencing lately with mavericks! The OS runs fine, but from time to time, the battery status freezes, whether its during usage or during charging. It would just hang there at a fixed value, and a reboot later would fix it! The same thing with iStat menus. Any readings would freeze until again, a reboot is made.
Anyone experiencing this issue? Any ideas what might have caused this?

PS: I did a disk verification, and permissions repair once, followed by a reboot which also fixed the issue! The issue would happen again like a week later though!! Do we really need to keep on repairing disk permissions every now and then? It's cumbersum
