Synching iPod to new laptop

The PC I synch my iPod to is dead.  I want to synch it with my laptop and transfer the music from my iPod to the new laptop.  How do I do that?  The only option I get is to overwrite the music on my iPod with what is in iTunes on my laptop....
Thanks

Need help re-synching iPods with new computer and getting iTunes to recognize our iPods (it doesn't even recognize them when they're plugged in).
Hubby wiped my harddrive for me, so now I need to get everything back in proper places. I'm using windows XP and installed iTunes once again (I believe it's version 8). I also installed all of my iTunes songs. Now I need to know where to go from here. We have 3 iPods and I need to get them all synched once again. I know how to create different libraries for each of us, but I can't figure out how to get our songs back into our iTunes libraries. When I open iTunes and plug in an iPod, iTunes doesn't even show that an iPod is plugged in.
What do I do now to get each of our iPods synched with our own libraries?
    TIA
    Brandy

Thanks Zevoneer. The "Restart ipod service" worked and itunes is now recognizing my ipod! Hooray!
Okay, now how do I synch all of our ipods with our individual libraries (I don't want all of my kids' songs and vice versa)? We each have hundreds of songs on our ipods that we don't want to lose.
    Thanks again!

  • Synching ipod on new computer without deleting content

My kids each received a new laptop for xmas. I want them to make each of their laptops their "home synching device" for their ipods. Currently they are using my computer to charge and synch their ipods. How can they transfer computers without deleting what is on their Ipod??? I've been trying on the new laptop but it keeps saying they can only have their library on one computer and it I put it on the new laptop it will delete what is on their ipod!!! YIKES!

  • Syncing iphone and ipod to new laptop

I have just got a new laptop and am trying to sync my iphone and ipod to it
    everything is on another computer.
I have managed to drag my itunes folder from my old computer to a usb stick and transfer it to my laptop.
If I sync them will I loose all my music, ringtones and apps etc?
    Can anyone advise please?

You won't lose them, but they will be erased from the phone then put back on (so it may take a while).

  • Help!! Connecting ipod to new laptop deleted all songs!

My daughter got a new laptop for college. In fact she is leaving in the morning-- but disaster struck and she may not be taking her music with her!!! While trying to install the ipod software on the laptop all her songs disappeared! We then went back to the PC the ipod originally linked with and were unable to re-load the songs- it also looked like some of the buttons that had been there with itunes disappeared. The other thing we did at the same time was to update the software, as we were prompted to do. What happened and how can we get the songs back on the ipod and her new computer? We started to back them up on a CD but the CD does not include the names and artists for some reason. Please help.

    hmmmmm.
even though you don't have a Toshiba, perhaps try disabling the high-speed USB interfaces on that PC. (no need to restore ... we're just checking to see if you can get recognition and a sync with them turned off.)

  • Backed up ipod to new laptop but laptop messed up songs albums and covers

Any ideas how to fix this? I have successfully got a back up from my ipod to my new laptop itunes account but it messed up all the songs, albums and covers which was why I was trying to back up to laptop in the first place. Albums are still on home network but I really wanted to be able to sync to my new laptop but it's all a mess. I don't want to sync from itunes on laptop with the albums a mess as the ipod is still in good order but obviously I can't add anything new until this is fixed. Any ideas? I always manually sync.

I believe that Apple's "Backup" application uses a special storage scheme that normaly requires Apple Backup to restore the backup items. There may be a problem, though, because your screenshot shows the backup items as ordinary folders. I don't use Backup any more, but I have some old storage items made with Backup 3, and my full and incremental backup items look like single files in Finder. They actually are packages, "special" folders with the same internal structure as the one you posted, but which look like single files in Finder. Maybe you used an earlier version of Backup that creates folders instead of package files.
I don't know if Backup 3 will be able to open and use the "normal-looking" folders that you do have, but it's worth a try. If you don't have Backup 3 on your current Leopard installation, you can download it at
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL184
You need a MobileMe subscription to make new backups, but I think you can restore old backups even without a subscription. There is a Help menu in Backup 3 which includes instructions on how to restore things when you no longer have the backup plan used to make the backups. You would normally use Backup 3 to open the most recent IncrementalBackup file if there is one, otherwise the FullBackup file. In your situation I would try to open the folder with those names, not the folder contents.
If this doesn't work try double-clicking the "backup.sparseimage" files in the Folder>Contents>Contents subfolders. If the disk image mounts, look inside the mounted disk for your stuff and drag the contents back to your internal HD. Don't try to restore "settings", just datafiles.

  • Troube Connecting iPod to new Laptop

I have recently purchased a new Laptop but have had my iPod sync to my PC but now wish to Connect it to the Laptop.
When I connect the iPod to the machine it does not seem to pick it up so i am unable to see if under the devices in iTunes. I need to update the music that is from my Laptop to the iPod but can not do this.
How do i get the iPod and the Laptop to sync together so that i am able to do this????????

Have you had a chance to look at these troubleshooting pages? They may be of some help:

  • Unable to transfer music from ipod to new laptop

I have had to purchase a new laptop and want to transfer my music, etc, from my ipod onto my newly installed itunes, so I can then transfer it onto my ipad.
I can see the music on my ipod, but when I try and drag the music into the library on itunes, a red 'no' symbol is displayed.

The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
Copy everything from the old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

  • IPod and new laptop

I have my library on my home laptop that has iTunes. I've downloaded iTunes software onto my work laptop now. I'd now like to get my music off of my iPod onto the new laptop without erasing what's on the iPod. Can I duplicate what's on the iPod onto the new laptop and be able to use the library on both laptops?

Usually in cases where your connecting the ipod to a home AND work PC, the simplest thing to do if possible at your work location is to put the ipod in Manual update and play the ipod thru itunes.
You can copy songs off the ipod with third party software, but this would get tiresome and alittle complex if your trying to keep a home and work library exactly alike with the exact some music, especailly if your buying/adding songs on your work PC and also at home.
To set the ipod to manual update connect it to the PC u usually connect to ( ITake for granted its the home PC) and check "Manually add songs"
I Know alot of people use the third party program called Yamipod because it not only will copy songs off the ipod and onto the PC, you can also add the program itself to the ipod and run it off the ipod without having to install it on your work PC. This is very handy for work places that do not allow there workers to install software or limit it

  • Transfering music from ipod to new laptop on Windows

I recently got a new windows laptop, because my old one broke. I have installed the most updated itunes to it, turned on the home sharing, and I would like to add my songs from my ipod to this new laptop. Also, it will not let me update my itunes on to my ipod without erasing everything I have purchased?
Where can I find my bought music on my itunes account? Is there a way to transfer everything onto my new laptop without starting fresh? I do not want to buy the same song twice. So I won't use the itunes if I cannot transfer everything into one place, and add new songs from my new itunes onto my ipod.
This has happened before, and I redid my entire ipod. I do not want to spend more money on the same songs.
Is there a list of things I can do that will sync all of my music to my new itunes without erasing my ipod?

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
    iTunes & iPod software
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

Otherwise if you still have the dead laptop it may be possible to extract the drive and hook it up in an external drive bay. I've recovered data for a number of friends and colleagues this way.
