Synchronization of three USRP-2932

hy everyone,
I am using three usrp-2932 to build a system of three synchronized Receivers
Referring to the example of 8x8 MIMO system, it use one gigabit ethernet interface and through switch to connect the eight USRP
But, in my application, i use 12.5MHz as my sampling rate. Besides, due to the concern of the throughput, i use three individual gigabit ethernet interface to connect the 3 usrps.
So, I am wondering that using 3 gigabit ethernet interface will influence the Synchronization of three USRP-2932 or not?
Because it is hard to confirm that the 3 gigabit ethernet interface will send the message to the 3 usrp at same time.
Besides, i was using MIMO cabel to do Synchronization of two USRP-2932.
And now i am using GPSDO to do Synchronization of three USRP-2932.
But, in my experiments, it seems that the performance of Synchronization via MIMO cable is better than using the GPSDO.
So, i am wondering that is there any better way to setup the system. Using external clock and PPS ?

0. NI FlexRIO SDR and VST offer sharing of local oscillator among devices giving both time, frequency, and phase alignment among multiple channels. (cabling them together is required.)
----- Best USRP Sync Options
1. MIMO cable (2 devices). It synchronizes off of the 10 MHz reference and shares the time base over the link.
2. Clock Distribution (>2 devices) best is using an octoclock or other clock distrubiton method: https://www.ettus.com/product/details/OctoClock-G
(Using the 2932 you will have to power down the internal GPSDO to use this method, as well as move a jumper because it shares the same line as the external SMA inputs.)

3. GPS Disciplined Clock with GPS Lock (>2 devices) can provide you up to 50ns of synchronization. For best performance all devices need to be able to lock to the same satellite constellation and be stationary.
------- Good USRP Sync Options
4. GPS Disciplined clock with NO GPS Lock (>2 devices) gives you better frequency accuract but does not synchrnoize between devices.
5. Standard USRP with internal TCXO (>2 devices) is equivalent to no synchronization and you will need to consider frequency offsets between devices.

Hello everyone,
we have just bought a USRP-2932, and on the first run I get this error:
Error -1074118627 occurred at niUSRP Initiate.vi
Possible reason(s):
A runtime or configuration error occurred.
Code: 2410
Details: LookupError: Path not found in tree: /mboards/0/dboards/A/rx_frontends/0/sensors/lo_locked
One solution I found for resolving this error is upgrading the firmware, so I downloaded the USRP 1.2 software package and fired up the config utility to upgrade the firmware.
Are the firmware images for 292x series, that are included in the software package, compatible with 2932 because there are no discreet images for 293x series?
I didn't want to experiment with these images as I am not willing to brick or damage the USRP and there are neither forum posts nor support files that point out the firmware compatibility.

Hi Inovosel,
The NI-2932 is not supported with the NI-USRP 1.1 driver. Support for it was added in version 1.2. So if you ran an example using version 1.1, I would expect to see an error similar to the one that you posted. The units are shipped with compatible images for version 1.2, so that should not be an issue. If you are unsure of how to update the images on your device, use the Getting Started Guide for step by step instructions. If for some reason you do brick the device when updating your images, there is a switch on the motherboard that allows you to boot into a safe mode, so you would not need to ship your unit in for an RMA. However bricking the unit by updating the firmware and FPGA images is not common if you are using the images that are provided with the driver.
Once you update your driver, if you are still getting this error, please provide details of exactly what you are doing (attach a screen shot or your vi) to help us troubleshoot your issue better.

Hardware options for synchronization

Was wondering if someone could help "rank" these approaches for synchronization.
- TCXO with shared references/PPS (i.e. - MIMO cable or OctoClock)
- OCXO
- OCXO with GPS
The "standard" TCXO models require extra stuff (MIMO or OctoClock or external sources) to phase lock and time synchronize.
The OCXO gives you better accuracy...but it is unclear the degree to which this has an effect on phase coherency (and over how long a time). Presumably, you'd still need something like a PPS to time synchronize?
With the GPS disciplined devices, are you basically getting the phase coherency and time synchronization from the GPS signal rather than external 'stuff'? Or are there instances where you'd still need something like the MIMO cable or OctoClock to further nail down timing and synchronization?

Thank you for the extra information! I have been looking further in to this issue, and a lot of your question depends on your hardware and system setup. JamesB, awesome post! This is great information. To add to this, for our GPS USRPS (NI USRP 293x) unfortunately you cannot use the Ref In inputs, so splitting out the external clock is not going to be an option on this hardware. With this in mind, option (c) will likely be the easiest since that is exactly how our USRP's work. Are you using an NI USRP? If so and you're trying to sync up 8 of these USRP's together, GPS might be the only real option.
As far as direct cabling vs. GPS for accuracy, direct cabling is more accurate if you are using an external clock that is is more accurate than the onboard clock and if you're using a USRP that can use an external reference clock
The NI USRP 2930 and 2932 both have OCXO's which alone are more accurate but there is no way to extract the 10MHz source to another device, except for a MIMO cable which is only good to use for 2 devices. Therefore the direct cabling method only exists for specific scenarios:
1. Using MIMO cable for up to 2 devices
2. Using an external clock, and a splitter.
However, the internal OXCO does not do you any good for more than two device synchronization. Using a GPS antenna, clock disciplining and a clear view of the sky will let each USRP utilize it's own OXCO and still be synchronized. So it is not just GPS, it is the act of using GPS information to adjust the already great OCXO time reference which required each device to adjust it's own clock. The following document shows the specifications for a USRP without a GPS antenna (just the OXCO accuracy) vs. the OCXO accuracy in conjunction with the GPS disciplining in section 4 (Synchronization with GPS Disciplined Oscillators on NI USRP 293x):

I wanted to follow this tutorial with the USRP 2932, which will arrive soon, but I later found out that I don't seem to have any of the LabVIEW Communications. Will not having those prevent me from using the USRP radio? If not, then are there any restrictions on what I can do with the radio without Communications?

Hi BreadLB,
The link to the tutorial that you posted is based on LabVIEW Communications System Design Suite, a new software environment designed to accelerate algorithm prototyping and over the air testing. It is a completely separate and independent environment from LabVIEW. See my post here for more details. You can also download a free 30 day evaluation copy here. Your hardware is supported with both LabVIEW and LabVIEW Communications.
The NI 2932 is a network based USRP, and it has a small onboard FPGA. Because of that, the FPGA on that specific product is not a LabVIEW FPGA target. The NI 294x/5x family has a large Kintex 7 FPGA and can be programmed using LabVIEW FPGA or LabVIEW Communications, like in the tutorial that you posted. The NI 2932 can be used with your host PC and LabVIEW for a wide variety of applications. Unfortunately the tutorial that you linked in your post requires the NI 294x/5x hardware and LabVIEW Communications. If you have questions about a specific application for your 2932, please post more details and we would be happy to help.

USRP N200 , GPSDO toolkit , Magnitude and "Phase" !!

I need to run a simple experiment using two USRP N200 adjunct with labview program to receive magnitude and phase of the received signal ? Is it possible ? and how much is that received phase value reliable since i checked the magnitude value calulating it manually which is OK !!
Also Has anyone incorpated GPSDO toolkit with USRPs ? does that help in synchronising two USRP ? It would be a great help if some one has the labview VI to check to check the GPSDO toolkit is working well with USRP or not ?

Well, I figured out the problem related to magnitude and phase and thanks for previous suggestions. But, Now have problem synchronising two N200 USRP and the labview program is working intermittently and then shows some error. Much detailed description is scripted below.
I have been trying to synchronize two N200 USRP (Receiver and Transmitter) using GPSDO toolkit + GPS antenna. I am using niUSRP EX PSK TX and niUSRP EX PSK Rx example file (Labview 2011) at the transmitter and receiver end. I have been using following step:
1. Used the aforementioned labview example files without any modification as step no 2 of Instructions provided in ( https://www.ettus.com/content/files/gpsdo-kit_4.pdf ) clearly mentions that changing J510 jumper on motherboard from 1-2 to 2-3 switches external 10 MHz Ref Clock to GPSDO’s 10 MHz Ref Clock. I assume that the hardware change made in the Ettus’ N200 USRP box while installing the GPSDO toolkit is enough to let the Labview program to know about where its reference clock signal is coming from.
2. I made some modification to the labview file (both TX and Rx) by adding a property node which selects “Reference Frequency Source” and added a controller which selects it as internal as shown in the attachment_freq.
3. Similar to (2), I made some modification to the labview file ( both TX and RX ), this time around by adding a property node which selects “Time base clock Source” and added a controller which selects it as internal as shown in attachment_time.
à Point to be noted while performing this entire step (1, 2 and 3) was:
"The labview program works perfectly fine when no GPS antenna is connected to the GPSDO output of the N200 USRP. As soon as I connect the antenna to the USRPs, it throws error as shown in attachment_error"
So, my questions are directed towards these are:
[A]. What does the error actually mean?
[B]. What has the error to do with connection or disconnection of the GPS antenna to GPSDO tool-kit?
[C]. My objective is just to update both devices that the Ref-clock signal is coming from the same source ( as a mode for synchronizing both devices). I am using Ettus’ GPSDO clock with GPS antenna for that purpose. Since, my modification in program in step2 and step3 doesn’t work well. I would want to know how you incorporate that with labview. Is not there any example VI in labview that uses previously mentioned product to synchronize?

Unit of Measure PCE is not an ISO Code

Hi MDM Experts,
We experienced problems in transferring the Catalog item to the shopping cart. The following error message appears:
"Incomplete items in catalog. Only complete items were transferred "
I checked SLG1 for the OCI error message and found this log:
"Unit of measure PCE is not an ISO code. Item will not be transferred"
I checked table CUNI in both the ERP and SRM server and I found out that PCE is indeed an ISO code. How can I resolve this error? The system is saying that PCE is not an ISO code but the table shows that it is. Is this a bug or something?

It turned out that in ERP and SRM, ST is the ISO code used for UOM piece. The ISO code in the Data Manager was changed to synchronize the three systems.

Error message when configuring Sync

I downloaded Desktop 6.0, since I have Outlook 2010 (32 bit) on Windows 7. When I click Configure Settings under Synchronization, it pops up a window of "Determining the root configuration name for main system...", then pops up a small window, labeled as Intellisync, with "Unknown error reported". Cannot get past this.
This is when trying to configure synchronization for organizer. Media sync worked just fine, but this is a WORK phone. Need my email, please.
Would talk to a person, but apparently RIM now charges for this. Nice.

Actually, no. You call your carrier tech support and they will work with you on this. If they cannot, they should suggest AND you should ask for the issue to be escalated up to RIM level tech support.
Meanwhile, some few others are seeing this issue.
Just a few questions: can you please confirm that Desktop Manager 501 has been uninstalled from your machine?
Also, if you could please provide the following logs to investigate this issue, that would be a great help:
Three log files: pttrace.log, tif.log and synchronize.log are required.
To get these logs:
Open iloptcfg.cfg. which is found at %APPDATA%\Research in Motion\BlackBerry\Intellisync
Edit the following values:
MultiJobTraceLog = 99
TifLog = 99 (needs to be added)
Synchronize logs are located in the temp directory
LoggingFilter = 1 (only needed if testing filters. If it is not in the file, you can add it under the [ilwin] section)
Save and close this document.
When the you click Synchronize now, three files will be created in the same directory: PtTrace.log, tif.log and synchronize.log

How can I add new values only to a column of a spreadsheet?

I have three "while loops" that are executed in parallel, two generate values and the third while loop write the values in a spreadsheet.
The run time of each while loop is different, to synchronize the three while loops I use a "Wait Until Next ms Multiple", but sometimes the same value is kept twice.
I think that a solution would be to add a "Write To Spreadsheet File" in the blocks that generate values, adding a new value in the wished column in each cycle, but I do not know like doing this.
I could keep the values in two arrays and add them in a same spreadsheet in different rows or columns, but I need save values in spreadsheet in each loop and not all values at the end of cycle.

I think your three loops solution is probably better than putting different kinds of functions into one loop. Keeping data acquisition/generation separate from file i/o is usually better because the OS can interfere with timing on the file operations.
If you pass the data to the file loop via queues, place the data into shift registers, and only write to the file when you have equal amounts of data from each generator you should be able to keep things synchronized. You can write larger or smaller amounts as necessary to keep pace with the generators. If one of the generators gets way ahead of the other, you have to decide how to deal with that issue.
Writing to the second column of a three column spreadsheet can be tricky. It involves keeping pointers to the portions written and not written, reading the entire file into memory and overwriting the cells where new data goes and rewriting the entire file. This can get very slow for large files. If the file and data structures are simple enough it might be feasible to read only a portion of the file and overwrite it with new data, but that approach has lots of risks to the data.
Wait until next ms multiple is only reliable if the wait interval is sufficiently longer than the execution time (including random OS delays) of each loop. Look at the synchronization functions such as notifiers to synchronize your loops.
If you still have problems, post a simplified version of your program and someone will probably be able to suggest solutions.

How to 2-way sync?

Hey all,
Can anyone tell me how to setup a 2-way sync between the client and the server?
Right now I can get it so that the client either overwrites the server or vice versa. But that is not acceptable, I need to be able to have data entered on the client and different data on the server and then sync everthing up.

Oracle Lite synchronization supports three types of conflict detection and resolution. They are, Server-wins, client-wins and custom.
It sounds like you are interested in custom conflict detection and resolution. In custom conflict detection and resolution you must provide a server side stored procedure that provides your business logic to handle detected conflicts.
You may find a discussion of this in the Oracle9i Lite 5.0.2 Developers Guide for Windows in section 5.5

Agentry app Publishing through VPN is extremely slow

Hello.
I've started with Syclo only a month ago.
With current set up both PROD and DEV servers are on remote machine and accessible from VPN. I working using "Map network device" in windows and locally installed Agentry Test Environment. Every-time I do a little change and want to see it - publishing process takes about two hours. On that time Eclipse says "Not responding" for an hour and then it actually publish for about an hour. More then that, due to my low experience it happens some time that I do something wrong and to recover I have to Reset test client and publish a back-up of the project, after which initial Synchronization takes three hours more.
I kind of feel very bad - because technically my productivity is amazingly low. What I could do? look into? in order to work around and manage to do things faster with Agentry?

So I copy/pasted all the files from remote to local laptop and then tried to connect, that's what Agentry Test Environment client said:
"Communications error (14)
Connection failed"

Applications that I need on my Pre Plus

I was able to move from a Treo 680 to a Pre Plus because I knew that I could use Classic to emulate the PalmOS for applications that I really needed. I like many of the new Pre applications and certainly true multi-tasking is great but here is what I need and am missing in my Pre (in random order):
(1) Windows Office program - A full Documents-to-go was promised more than a year ago. Now, Quick Office is promised for Web OS 2 but Web OS 2 is eliminating Classic. That's a big problem because I still need the rest of this list which is only available through Classic and Palm OS.
(2) Genealogy program - I currently have "My Roots" that works with my PC program working through Classic. There is nothing yet in WebOS
(3) Worldmate - Bits and pieces of its functions are available through WebOS but nothing compares to the real Worldmate which is available in multiple smartphone formats, including Palm OS.
(4) Pocket Quicken or an equivalent - Here's a real problem. Intuit no longer licenses it but existing users can continue to use it. I use it on a daily basis through Classic. It synchronizes transactions with my PC version of Quicken. I'd settle for an alternative but there is none to my knowledge.
(5) Backup that I control - I have used RscBackup for many years. I like selecting my backup preferences and being able to restore partially or fully. Also, I want them on my PC (and its backups) and not on yours.
(6) One Synchronizing program - I currently synchronize with three applications: Chapura Synch Manager (dates, contacts, memos, todos), HotSync (for applications maintained in Classic), and Wifi Media Synch. And, still I have to use the USB connection to move files.
(7) File Manager program - I want to be able to, at least, move a photo between folders but even that means turning off my Pre and attaching the USB cable and then disconnecting and restarting. Come on, we need an easier way!!
(8) Better Music program - I really miss pTunes. It handled music, playlists, and radio with plenty of controls and adjustments.
(9) Better eReader program - I have, to date, used six major reading programs between my Treo (eReader, MobiReader, Plucker) and Pre (Kobo, pReader, & Popelli.) The Pre ones are limited and cumbersome. Also, none can handle the DRM protected files, not even the basic ones from the public library.
(10) Audio book reader - I am using the Music player on the Pre but I cannot stop and resume without losing my place in an hour long section.
(11) Holidays on calendar - One thing I no longer am missing is holidays on my calendar. After years of using an application on my Treo that added them to my calendar, which I could then edit, I am now following a suggestion on the Palm Forum to use Google calendar. I cannot edit these but it is better than nothing and since Classic cannot send items from Holidates to Pre calendar, I will live with this patch.
I love my Pre and carry it everywhere. I have used it worldwide. I use it a lot! It could be so much better and less annoying if some of the above were available.
Oh, and about the battery life...

5. Have you heard of homebrew and Precentral.net? There's a homebrew app called Save/Restore that will allow you to save application data onto the USB drive where you can offload it to your computer.
7. Continuing with homebrew, there's an app called Internalz that will allow you to browse all of the files on your phone, not just your USB drive.

How to switch between synchonized clips

There has got to be an easier way:
Ok, so here is my workflow so far with dealing with Multicam footage.
Clip 1, Clip 2, External Audio -> Synchronize all three. Add new Synch clip to my timeline. Open in TimeLine view. This shows me the Two clips (one stacked on the other) and my ext audio track. I detach and remove the two audio tracks that are embedded in the two clips since they are not needed once the clips are synched to the Ext Audio. Now here is where things get messy for me.
So I start editing and whenever I want to switch camera angles from the top clip to the bottom, I need to constantly "Open in Timeline" and drag one on top of the other, carefully ensuring that the timing doesn't change even with Snapping turned on.
This is a horrible process. Really bad compared to how easily I did things in FCP7. If I have an interview for example, I might have to make dozens of cuts to the synched clip just to eliminate stutters from the subject and interviewer questions. There has got to be a simpler way for me to alternate between the cameras than this.
I have tried opening in the Angle Viewer mode but it shows a black unselectable clip next to the primary (top most) clip that is running.
Any ideas?

So I discovered the issue I am having might be related to the fact that I created these clips as Synchronized Clips instead of Multicam clips. I think this is why they won't show in the viewer properly.

Just saw your post. Better late than never. You may want to
consider GameBrix.com, where you can create Flash based, casual
games using your web browser. No downloads are required. You can
create a game from scratch using a library of images, sounds and
game mechanics. You can also upload your own. The online script
editor will allow you to view and edit the ActionScripts associated
with each game mechanic. In short, a great way to ramp up on game
design and build your own game without investing a lot of $
upfront.
