Syncing music results in large Other data on iphone

using 8GB iphone 3G and iTunes 7.7 on mac OS 10.4.11, when i sync music to the iphone, i get 1.42 GB of music plus 3.31GB of Other. when i turn off music syncing, Other goes does to 228MB. this happens if i have all other syncing but music turned off. Any suggestions for what i can do to reduce the Other data being sync'd as part of music? Thanks.

seems to have resolved itself on the 4th sync.

  • "Other" data on iphone?

What is contained in other data on iphone?

"Other" data is real data including your system files and cached content that you put on your device by using the built-in apps. It's just that as you use the phone, it will grow. This includes:
    Messages and attachments
    Contacts
    Reminders
    Safari bookmarks and cache
    Email messages and attachments
    Calendar entries
    Genius data
    Music catalog and cover art
    Operating system settings
    Game Center status
To clear out “Other” data from your device, you don’t need to restore your device, just install and run iLike to resolve this problem.

  • Cannot sync iPod with iTunes and "Other" data increasing

    So here is my issue:
Since I updated my iPod to v1.2.3 (or whatever the most recent one is) my iTunes will give me an error message when I try to drag+drop files from my PC library to my iPod (error message 48). Now when this happens I'll get the error message but iTunes will keep transferring the files I wanted to add to my iPod, BUT instead of them showing up in either Music or Movies the tranferred data just adds to the "Other" section. And I don't know how to view/delete "Other" files.
Is the only answer to restore my iPod? And if I do this, won't I just have the same issue when my iPod is re-updated to the most recent version again?

If the iPod database gets corrupted, it will add files to "Other" instead of where they really belong.
Restoring the iPod will erase this database and recreate it.
And if I do this, won't I just have the same issue when my iPod is re-updated to the most recent version again?
No, it shouldn't. This is why you Restore the iPod. It erases the corrupt database.

  • Other data on iphone 2.5 gb, genius data????

My 'other' storage has steadily grown. It's now at 2.5 gigs. It annoys me that it's days I can't account for. Under usage on my iphone the apps list never tallies up. So I am referring to other (yellow bar) when you sync in iTunes. There are do many possible causes and many suggest resetting as new phone is only true fix but I think that's very drastic. Anyway it tends to manifest itself on usb syncs with iTunes. I don't sync often but every now and then the increase in other seems to occur its not more music, vids or apps as I rarely add anything. I think the culprit could be 'syncing genius data' which seems to happen periodically. Does anytime else notice same pattern. What on earth is this genius data sync anyway. I have no idea what it's doing and how to stop it (without disrupting iTunes Match)

Thank you. Unfortunately I tried iMobie a while back, small insignificant gains. I really think restoring phone as new is draconian. I believe I have identified the culprit as syncing the phone to itunes on the computer. I don't do it often but sometimes when this happens it goes through the whole cycle of syncing genius data. I am pretty sure this is when the 'other' grows. For example last night it did it. After it finished my available space decreased by some 300 mob and I saw the other data had gone up from 2.1 gigs to 2.4 gigs. So I wanted to find out if this genius data sync can be stopped. I don't see what benefit or affect it has on my phone. And by preventing it is ther a possibility of reclaiming some of this 'other' data. I do understand other can creep up a bit what with cloud services, mails, messages etc but I am pretty certain genius sync is to blame.
My phone is 32gb so I would of been pretty stuffed if I had 16 gb version. Even so to lose this amount of data to 'other' is still pretty annoying. Having to avoid syncing to itunes in the future because of this is not sonething I want to do
    Cheers

  • Help Deleting 'Other' Data on iPhone 4

So I recently noticed that anytime I'd try to take a photo on my iPhone 4, it'd say my storage was full, which makes no sense. I don't have many apps, have a lot of music but only 46 photos on my photo roll, and I'm constantly clearing history, and making sure apps are closed in the multitask bar. So, I decided to do a rare sync to iTunes, and it turns out I have over 6 GBs of 'Other' data. That takes roughly half the storage on my iPhone.
After reviewing various posts, I've seen plenty of explanations for what 'Other' constitutes, as well as plenty of solutions for what to do about it. Unfortunately, none of these have worked thus far. However, I'm not sure if I'm doing the restore from new method right, so if anybody could clarify these questions for me that'd be great:
Do I have to restore from new and then not restore from my back-up when prompted on iTunes? I've noticed after I restored the iPhone as new and then restored from the back-up (rather than set it up as a new iPhone) that it will show I have somewhere in the high 400 to low 500 GBs of Other. I'll clap and giggle like a schoolgirl, and then it'll skyrocket back to 6+ GBs as the sync takes place. My clapping and giggling will cease, frustrated grumbling commences.
So do I have to set it up as a brand new iPhone?
Does my back-up itself contain the corrupted data?
If I were to set it up as brand new, does that mean everything like my phone number, contacts, WiFi passwords, email set-up, etc. disappears?
Thanks for your help, really appreciated.
P.S. I have gotten the most recent software updates.

Your phone number is on your Sim card so no it would not be gone. Corrupt data does not go to the cloud. The only thing that the cloud saves are the specific things that you Checked in your set up and that's all that will be there.
I do not back up my phone to the cloud I only have the cloutd set to save specific things.
Again, look in set up under iCloud were you have signed your phone in as an Apple device and see what you've told it to save. I'm not sure exactly what data  you have saved but that is one of the options that you have. Be sure you uncheck data.

  • How can i sync music not purchased from itunes from my iphone to itunes library on my pc?

    Hi
I have quite a lot of music on my phone that I've ripped from cds that I have. How can I get these to sync into my itunes library on my pc? I want to upgrade to the new os but will lose a lot of my music if i do.
    Any help appreciated
    Nachan

If after researching the info in the other comments you still find that there is music that you would loose on the iPhone, there are 3rd party apps that can manage iPhone content without erasing the iPhone. Just search for a Windows alternative to iTunes.
    This one is popular for both Mac & PC;

  • HT1386 How do I sync music from my iPad to my new iPhone?

How do I sync music, notes, calendar from my iPad to my new iPhone? Not having success with iCloud for some reason.

You can sync content like music using iTunes as the vehicle in order to transfer content from one device to another. This support artcile might be helpful. You can sync and transfer purchases from the iPad and then sync the phone by setting up the sync preferences in iTunes for the phone.
iTunes 11 for Windows: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad
You can also download the music to the phone from the purchased tab in iTunes - on the phone, but it goes much quicker of you sync the content from iTunes.
If you want to sync notes, calendar entries using iCloud, and assuming that you have iCloud enabled on both devices, make sure that you turned these items on in the settings in Settings>iCloud>Calendars>On and the same for notes. You have to have an iCloud email account in order to sync this content unless you are syncing via your email account and that would have to be set up as well in Settings>Mail, contacts and calendars.

  • 15GB of 'other' data on iPhone even after iTunes factory restore...

    Hi,
Does anybody have a solid idea how to reduce the 'other' data on the iphone?
I have just under 15gb of 'other' data on my phone which I think could explain the slow operation when using it.
I've done a factory restore and it reduced the 'other' by 0.3gb. Not really worth the waiting around.
    Any advice is most welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Chris

If it is any condolances, i have similar issues, The only thing that worked was factory reset...and start fresh from the beginning.... If you are lucky enough to get rid if the "garbage" aka "other" memory

  • Iphone 4 sync lost foto's and other data

    Hello
In oktober last year my old iphone 4 needed repairs so I made a backup before I brought it to the store.
The iphone didn´t get repaired but In received a complete new one.
I started using my new ihpone normally for the next 4 months. Tonight (9 march 2012) I connected my new ihpone for the first time to Itunes to get some music back on my iphone.
Itunes started to syn and it restored the last backup i made 4 months ago. This resulted in the fact that I now lost all my new contacts from the last 4 months, but more importantly I lost pictures, movies, etc.
Is there any way to retreive the foto´s and stuff or undo the sync? I would really like my foto's and stuff back that itunes deleted.
    thanks in advance

No, the personell at the mobile store (not apple) were not very good.
He didn't even know I had received a brand new phone untill I told him so. He told me only some hardware was renewed.
Anyways, just very angry at the moment. I know I failed with using Itunes. But I truly believe that itunes should always ask you to backup before doing such actions.
i noticed there are a lot of people on different forums with similar problems. My theory is that when many people experience similar problems like this then Apple should look into the mirror and ask themselves if they did anything wrong.
I never asked my old backup to be restored on my new phone. Itunes just went and did it and deleted my content in the process. Just have to live with it now.

  • Iphone not syncing music from itunes. all other devices are, it's just one iphone on my account

I'm having an issue syncing one iphone with my itunes account. I have several other iphones and an ipod that will sync just fine. I am running Windows 8. There was a glitch earlier when the new ios came out that was resolved and everything was working fine... now this one phone is not syncing. The music is showing up but when you hit play it just skips through.

  • HT4527 My old mac book was backed up to a Time Machine drive.  That Macbook is dead.  I have a new Mac Mini.  How do I get the iTunes library (not just the music files but all other data...playlists, ratings, etc) on the new Mac from my Time Machine?

My old Mac died. I had it backed up to a Time Machine external drive (fortunately).  I have a new Mac. I want to get my entire iTunes library from the Time Machine drive to the new Mac. I want not only the music files but all the "library" metadata, playlists, song rankings, unique genre designations. How do I do this?

No backup is a huge mistake.

  • Syncing interrupted resulting in less Other space

i was syncing a movie of 900-ish mb. i accidentally disconnected my ipod. i connected it back again and when i did i saw that Other went from 330 mb to 1.2 gb. thats obviously the movie that was interrupted but its not in the movies section and i can't find that file anywhere. is there anyway i can get rid of that unnecessary space taker? thank you so much.

It would appear that the iPod hard drive or iPod software has become corrupt. This doesn't mean that the songs are not on your iPod, hence the fact that the iPod reports used space and iTunes may show them. I've never seen a plausible explanation for why it does this, although the accidental disconnection probably was the cause in this instance.
You should restore the iPod and then reload the content again from iTunes.

  • ITunes fails to sync correctly, fails to recognize most data on iPhone

I have a new iPhone 5 that has had a tough childhood due to retailer errors that made it difficult to get running as a phone. Now that those are ironed out, I am having chronic sync errors that I guess are associated with iTunes.
I stopped syncing Podcasts and abandoned iTunesU due to unpredictable behavior in both. Now even music syncing is failing. There is always a discrepancy between what is listed in the Music app and what has actually been copied to the phone. So I select a track and get a "red circle" icon beside it, and the player skips through a series of absent tracks until it lands on one that was actually copied.
When I plug in the phone and view the iPhone screen in iTunes, the bar at the bottom usu. shows only one type of data: "Other." As I go through the motions of syncing, "Audio" reappears during a sync, then usually disappears again. Syncs aborted with the dialog "The iPhone <NAME> could not be synced because the connection to the iPhone was lost."
I went through escalating steps to troubleshoot iTunes, did a hard reboot of the phone, restored the iOS software, and deleted the iTunes photo cache. The "could not be synced" dialogs went away, but the syncs continue to fail.
I read in another thread about deleting corrupt elements of the iTunes software that have to do with syncing, but no details were given. What should I do about this?
    iTunes 11, Mac OS 10.6.8, MacBook2,1
    iOS 7.0.4, iPhone 5

exactly same issue with iphone 4, Win7 64 bit, Outlook 2003, itunes 10. Everything worked fine until bought new laptop running win7. Now in Itunes I cannot select which contacts or calendar to sync to - no options to choose from. The I get the Sync failure message.

  • IPod touch won't sync, Other Data keeps increasing

    iTunes version 12.0.1.26
    iPod iOS 8.1.2
I received a new 64GB iPod touch this Christmas. I've had several issues with it, but they were mostly just irritating and not actually stopping me from using the iPod (can't make new playlists on iPod itself, for instance). However, I've now had to restore the iPod twice in 2 days after the Other Data grew to over 26GB and I couldn't edit my music or podcasts at all. As near as I can tell, after the initial sync to iTunes any changes to the music on the iPod result in new Other Data. It's like the iPod is deleting my access to the music but not deleting/overwriting the actual files. So each time the iPod tries to sync to the computer and update any changes, it just adds on to the existing files and quickly runs out of space. Each time I try the various tricks I've found online that are supposed to force iTunes to recalculate data usage, it just increases Other Data. Even just changing from automatic to manual syncing causes it to double the "used" space. I can't add anything new to the iPod, it just stays greyed out and stuck on either step 4 or 5 of the sync, saying it's waiting for the changes to take effect.
Right now I'm trying another restore and hoping to get everything added on before it can decide it's out of space (data bar shows 9.44GB free, with all music, audiobooks, and podcasts accounted for), and I already have over 700MB of Other Data.

If you only restored from backup try restoring to factory settings/new iPod.
    If a PC try:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
