System 7 software on a new mac

wwhat about symulators/emulators for such?
i'd love to access my 200 or so old music compositions w/ my imac g5...
thanks,

Of course, there is no way you are going to boot up a new machine in any Mac OS other than OSX. This leaves you with three options: 1) find a program that you CAN run on your new machine that can read your old files and translate them; 2) run an emulation program on your new machine that will run your old program inside a window in the new OS; or 3) acquire an old machine that will run your software, translate your files into something that you can run on the new machine, and transfer the files.
For option 1, it depends on what format they are in now, and whether there are any modern programs that can read them. Look for sound programs and then check their specs.
For option 2, there are a couple of Mac emulators you can find through Version Tracker (www.versiontracker.com) such as "Mini vMac" or "Basilisk" which may or may not work for you. Always worth a shot.
For option 3, you can find older Macs on eBay or sites such as 'www.lowendmac.com' (check tech articles for machine compatibility for OS 8–9 (docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25114) and System 7 (docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=8970). All of the really early Macs should run Systems 5–6).
Also note that pre-OS9 discussions can be found here: discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=102
Hope that helps,

Normally Microsft allows the installation of their programs, except Operating Systems, to be installed on a desktop and notebook at the same time as long as both system are used exclusively by the same person and Not at the same time.
So this should also be true for MS Office for Mac. The only way to tell is to install it on the Mini and then use the same key to activate it. If the activation goes through you are fine. But if you run both system at the same time do not open any of the Office programs on both system at the same time. That may trigger MS to disallow one of the activations.
MS Office for both Mac and Windows checks the local network and logs into the MS activation site everytime one of the apps is started to check current activation and to check if you have it running on more then one computer on your local network using the same key.

I just got a new Mac Mini at work and want to update software. It keeps asking for my apple ID and wants credit card info???!!!
What is that all about? I should NOT have to give my credit card info to update my system software on my work computer.
Is there a way around this?
    Thanks.

  • Old software on a new Mac

I'm not sure if this is the right forum thread to post this, and I apologize if it isn't.
I am happily awaiting delivery of my new Intel Imac! I was wondering if it is okay to put old software on a new computer. My G4 is officially dead, and I have an old version of Photoshop that I would like to continue to use until I can afford the software suite for the new computer. Is this okay to do?
    Thanks,
    Barb the Computer Illiiterate

Photoshop (an OS X version) will run on Intel Macs, however it will run in the Rosetta emulator so expect performance to be slower than you might expect.
Of course the older the version the less compatible it may be with the version of OS X that will come installed on your new computer. OS 9 versions can not run on Intel Macs.
You should have a minimum of 1 GB of RAM installed (2 GB will be better) because Rosetta will demand more resources.

  • Can I boot in system 10.8 with a new mac Pro?

I am upgrading my computer to a new Mac Pro and have a software program (Extensis Portfolio) than won't run in anything past system 10.8. Can I create a partition or boot from an external drive with system 10.8?

I can point you to Mavericks running a Maverick VM for one. Are you sure you want to go with "ML Only?"
I doubt it changed since Maverick days.

Apple's End User license agreement allows you to install up to two additional copies of Mac OS X 10.9 on a Mac that is already running a retail version of the operating system and not a pre-installed version. For a Mac shipped with OS X 10.9, refer to

Clone Host Machine & Run as Virtual Machine for Testing
    http://jeffgardner.ca/Blog/?p=738
to move back a forth between the test systems and my production environment was a process I found too tedious – requiring a reboot each time I needed to check things. Using two machines is minimally effective, since I can’t afford two Mac Pros.
I decided to use CCCloner to clone my software environment and VM Fusion to simulate my hardware – running this cloned environment as a Virtual Machine on the same hardware as my production environment. I basically see a copy of my machine as a window on my production hardware.

  • How do I move app store software to a new mac ?

I boughta new mac mini.  I restored my  stuff from my time machine backup.  I then upgraded 10.9 to 10.9.2.  Now if I try to update anything in the App Store, it say that an error occurred.  Same if I try to get a new app!  Any ideas to fix this? TIA

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Is it possible to install an older version of Mac software on a new Mac mini?

My wife just bought a new Mac mini that was Yosemite loaded. She struggles with font sizes and hopes we can end her frustration. I am still using Mountain Lion on my iMac and can easily adjust font size everywhere (all software, Safari, Firefox, etc.). Can we meet her Mac mini needs?

An older OS will not have the correct drivers for the new Mini.  With Yosemite you can adjust the contrast, transparency and also pick "dark mode" which can help in readability.  Look in preferences, accessibility and also general for those settings.

  • Should I install old software in my new Mac Pro, then upgrade?

I'm trying to transfer documents and apps from my PowerBook G4 to my new Mac Pro. I used Migration Assistant but it transferred only some files, no applications, no settings, even though I checked all those boxes. I've given up on MA. But here's the question: I have Office 2004, which I'd like to install so I can have Word on my Mac Pro, and then I would upgrade after installation. I've heard that pre-intel software can really slow down your intel computer. But what about starting with that software and then upgrading, so I don't have to pay for an entirely new MS Office? Same with Final Cut Studio. Any ideas about this would be appreciated!

MS Office 2008 is an upgrade, not an update. It does not replace Office 2004. It is a separate installation. It is like upgrading from Tiger to Leopard except 2008 does not replace 2004 as Leopard replaces Tiger. You purchase the entire 2008 installation like purchasing the Leopard upgrade, but can have 2004 and 2008 running on the same machine without partitioning. I have both installed on my iMac.

As far as I know, there is no discounted upgrade price from Office 2004 to 2008. I could not find it on their website anyway. I think to get Office 2008 you need to buy the Office 2008 installation disk.
I think (might be just me) Office 2004 running in Rosetta is slightly faster than the 2008 version. All the applications in 2004 launch faster. In Excel 2008, entries into cells are delayed by a fraction of a second but 2004 has instantaneous entry (perhaps MS in their infinite wisdom thinks the delay is a feature).
I am gradually changing over to 2008 only because it needs to be compatible with other computers in my office. If it weren’t for that, I would have stayed with Office 2004. Anyway, if you are going to buy Office 2008, you can install it and run it side by side with 2004 to see for yourself.
I’ve also seen posts here about MS Office 2008 having problems with the Spaces application of Leopard. If you use the Office Toolbox (formatting palette) it has bizarre behavior when using Spaces.

  • Is there anyway to run older versions of software on the new mac chip set?

I've got an older version of photoshop that ran fine on my 5 year old mac mini...which won't run on my brand new mac mini....anyone have the same problem and a work around....

The error message reads, "You can't open the "Adobe Photoshop CS.app" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." Would running an earlier version of OSX correct this?

  • My license is for PC I now have a Mac, how can I download the software onto my new Mac?

I purchased the Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 for windows. I was given a disc to download it onto my computer. Recenlty my computer died so I purchased a new Mac. How can I download my Adobe Suite license onto my new Mac?

To get a Windows versions of CS5.5 onto a Mac you would have to try using a Windows emulator such as Bootcamp.  CS5.5 does not qualify for a platform swap, so you will not be able to acquire a Mac version of it unless you find someone selling it.

  • Do you need to buy antivirus and firewall software for a new mac book pro?

If you purchase a new Mac book pro retina does it need antivirus and firewall products?

No. Although disabled when you buy it, OS X has a built-in firewall that you can easily turn on should you need to. You would only need to if you were connecting to public Wi-Fi networks like at Starbucks. AV protection is also built-in to OS X.

  • Display Software Required with New Mac/OS?

I just wondered whether the 30" display software that comes on CD with the screen (dated 2005) is required on a new 8 core MacPro with OS 10.4.9, or is the software support built-in to the system now?

Any 2005 software would be from before Apple started using Intel chips, so wouldn't be for the Mac Pro, anyway. Just use the software included in OSX.

  • Transfer software to a new Mac?

I am upgrading my macbook to a macbook pro and I have some applications that were downloaded.
Can I simply "burn a disc" from within the applications folder and use it to install on new computer?
Also, does anyone know how Apple Care works if you upgrade, I still have 2 years on my current computer, can that transfer or does it have to stay with computer?
    Thanks for your time,
    jb

For the Final Cut, if you bought it in DVD just delete it off the old system and install in on the new one. If you bought it from the Mac App Store, again delete it off the old system and  log in with the same Apple ID you used to buy it and download it to the new system.

  • Do I need antivirus software on my new mac

I just got my Mac Book yesterday and was wondering if I need anti virus software or is there some kind of software already installed. I'm new to the Mac world.

Any advice other than an unqualified "no" just feeds the misinformation that Apple products are just as vulnerable as Windows or Android. Anyone who believes those lies should immediately run into the bathroom and cover themselves with a mattress because a tornado could strike at any time. Really, it could.
Are there a couple of Mac trojans? Sure. What is the ratio of Mac malware to Windows or Android? 1:2? 1:10? Try 1:100,000 at least. Nobody really knows for sure. Android malware has jumped 472% in three months.
And you want people to worry about their Macs? Get real.
