System Backup: Need basic guidance

I just got my first external hard drive (500GB Seagate FreeAgent)and really need guidance from scratch.
I need to back up not only my computer but most importantly, photos and home movies.
1. Do I need to format the external hard drive?
2. How do I backup everything?
3. Is there a way for the computer to automatically do this with Mac OS 10.4.11?
4. Do I need to partition for any particular reason if saving photos & movies are my priority?
Thanks!

Yes, you need to prepare the drive:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Conducting backups relies on using backup software such as:

1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
10. MimMac (Commercial)
11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
You can also simply clone your startup drive to your external drive using the Restore option of Disk Utility:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup drive.
Source means the startup drive.
Backup drives should be kept separate from data storage drives. If it's you intent to use this drive for both then you should partition the drive. However, backup should be your priority. If yo save files and have no backup, then when those files are lost, erased, or damaged they are gone for good. Keeping backup drives separate from storage drives also protects against drive failure.

  • How can I create a system backup in Solaris 10?

    Hello,
    sorry about my English.
I need to create a image of entire disk or a system backup. I think use "ufsdump" but I'm not sure. Can I create a backup of whole disk with "ufsdump" command? Are there any application to do it.?
    I've got a Solaris 10.
    Thank.
    Alejandro.

If you want to create an image of the entire disk, then `dd' is an option. But you can also use ufsdump to create an image of a filesystem running on that disk, but you need to do that for every filesystem on the disk and please keep a copy of you vtoc for the future if you need to restore everything.
On the other hand you make me thing about someone who wants to clone machines and then a Flash Archive can also be an option. Please keep in mind to ask the question in the future instead of conformation of your answer ;-)

  • Time Machine will not complete a system backup and terminates with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.  This follows a problem when Time machne terminated when the volume was almost full.

On 11/1/2011, Time Machine (TM) terminated with an error message I did not record.  I noted that the drive was full and decided to do a separate complete bootable  system backup using Carbon Copy Clone (CCC), before clearing the TM volume and trying to start it over clean.  Part way through the full system backup CCC put up a message that there was a Physical Problem  "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16".  That was about the time that TM malfunctioned, so I assumed they were related.  After starting CCC over a couple of times, and getting the same error message, I let it go through to completion of the backup, which took three or four hours.  I then ran tests using Disk Utility and verified that there was nothing physically wrong with both the internal hard drive and the TM volume.  I also erased and reformatted the TM volume.  However, every time I started Time Machine, it would record a few GB and terminate with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".  I restarted the computer with no change in results.  Note that prior to starting the CCC backup, I "Repaired Permissions", "zapped the PRAM" and "re-set the SMC", hoping to have a clean bootable system on the backup.  I ran Techtool and no problems were found.
I'm running this on an Intel iMac under 10.5.8 and recording to a 500GB My Passport drive.  My hard drive is only about half full at 246 GB.  My assessment is that something happened at 16-28-16 on 11/1/2001 to screwup the Backup Directory in the file at "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16". My question is, how do I fix it?
I had just completed writing everything above here, explaining the problems I had been encountering for the past 24 hours.  I had the Time Machine window standing open on the desktop where I could see it, having recentlycleared it after the last termination.  As I was proofing what I had written, I looked at the window and noted that the clock had started a new run for a full back up, since all prior efforts had failed and the TM volume was empty.  As I watched and waited for it to fail again, as it had been doing at about 13 GB, it kept going and going until it just finished a complete backup, about 4.5 hours later, with my having done nothing.  Now my question would have to be - what could possiibly have happened to make it perform this way?   It will be interesting to see if it continue to operate normally, or if the problem will return, in a later backup run.

You should not keep those files for long, and probably shouldn't back them up (if you need them at all -- since you do regular backups, I'm doubtful just how worthwhile that feature is).
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
One of Apple's maddeningly incomplete messages. Most likely, there's a problem with a file (quite possibly the one CCC didn't like).  See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details and instructions on finding and fixing it.
If you continue running the Directory Protection app, be sure to exclude your Time Machine drive from it (as it will just take up lots of room, and won't help repair your backups if there's a problem);  and exclude the folders it creates from being backed-up by Time Machine (as they'll create large backups, and you probably can't use the backed-up folders anyway), per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Abap+Java System Backup

    Dear Experts,
We just take our bi system(abap+java)  backup online, so could you please help me which files we need to backup during the Sap system is online,
As the below help.sap.com link said that for filesystem backup "Create a backup of the SAP system directory /usr/sap/<SID>." (before we need to stop SDM)
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/4b/d8f23ea4b42e5ae10000000a114084/content.htm
Can we backup entire /usr/sap/<SID> directory while sap and db is still runnig ? if not which directories we need to backup ?
Should we backup filesystem and db backup at the same time for a consistent backup, or can we schedule separately filesystem and db backup if there is no deployment exist between db backup and filesystem backup schedules,
    Best Regards,
    Atakan

As suggested you can either go with the ofline backup for the abap and for Java you need to have the filesystem backup.
Or you should go witht he file system backup of all the file system. But for that you need downtime.
So what i shall suggest you thet go vith the online backup and have the archive log on and have archive logs backup too.
And just the online backup completes have the Java export of the Java system of your BI.Durng the exportthe SDM will stop while the Servernode and the dispatcher service will be running,so no error will occur when some one is using the JAVA BI.
This is the safest method ad you can recover the JAVA system any time. Please also have an offline backup at weekends of the abap system when its down.
Please check the Password of DDIC of client 000 and the J2ee_admin before taking the export.
    Thanks

  • Development System Backup - Best Practice / Policy for offsite backups

Hi, I have not found any recommendations from SAP on best practices/recommendations on backing up Development systems offsite and so would appreciate some input on what policies other companies have for backing up Development systems. We continuously make enhancements to our SAP systems and perform daily backups; however, we do not send any Development system backups offsite which I feel is a risk (losing development work, losing transport & change logs...).
Does anyone know whether SAP have any recommendations on backuping up Development systems offsite? What policies does your company have?
    Thanks,
    Thomas

    Thomas,
Your question does not mention consideration of both sides of the equation - you have mentioned the risk only.  What about the incremental cost of frequent backups stored offsite?  Shouldn't the question be how the 'frequent backup' cost matches up with the risk cost?
I have never worked on an SAP system where the developers had so much unique work in progress that they could not reproduce their efforts in an acceptable amount of time, at a acceptable cost.  There is typically nothing in dev that is so valuable as to be irreplaceable (unlike production, where the loss of 'yesterday's' data is extremely costly).  Given the frequency that an offsite dev backup is actually required for a restore (seldom), and given that the value of the daily backed-up data is already so low, the actual risk cost is virtually zero.
I have never seen SAP publish a 'best practice' in this area.  Every business is different; and I don't see how SAP could possibly make a meaningful recommendation that would fit yours.  In your business, the risk (the pro-rata cost of infrequently  needing to use offsite storage to replace or rebuild 'lost' low cost development work) may in fact outweigh the ongoing incremental costs of creating and maintaining offsite daily recovery media. Your company will have to perform that calculation to make the business decision.  I personally have never seen a situation where daily offsite backup storage of dev was even close to making  any kind of economic sense.

  • Java system backup

    Hi,
what is the procedure for sap java standalone system backup. as per my knowledge, we need to take a backup of:
    1. java database
    2. file strucute (sdm) for configuration data
can any one provide me the complete document or steps to perform the standalone java system backup.
    Thanks,
    Niranjan.

    hi Niranjan V,
i have followed follow the steps for backup in my landscape, the first procedure is the SAP recommended one for consistent backup for sap systemsand  the second procedure may take more space, but it is very easy to recover the system in short time.
    1)  take a backup by sapinst ( master installer ) is know as system copy.
                     ( or )
    2)  take another backup by file strucute (sdm) for configuration data
a )  disable all sap and oracle services at OS level
b )  take copy of whole of usr directory into a seperate folder ( ex:  bi_backup_01242009)
c )  take copy of whole of oracle directory into the folder ( ex:  bi_backup_01242009)
note : all sap and  oracle services should be disabled in services.msc in windows. where as in unix stopsap commnad stops all sap and oracle services please check if not stopped any one of the services ( processes) kill it.
these are the complete steps for file strucute (sdm) for configuration data
you have take the offline file backup by the following steps
    1)  down the sap instance by the command -> stopsap (unix) / MMC (windows)
    2)  i have created the the floder named  ->ex:  aed_file_backup_042409  in AED_Backup folder
    2)  /usr/sap       entire folder
    3)  /oracle/AED    entire folder except 102_64, desktop
    thank you,

  • OS File System Backup

    Hi,

    OS - RHEL 5.6
How i can take OS file system backup manually?-
    which is the best mothod?
I know, we can use tar?
could anyone tell me which is the best method..
    Thanks
    KSV.DBA

In addition to the link mentioned above, do you have to rely on free solutions, or do you have a budget for a solution?
You can perform a complete OS level backup of your Oracle database when it is shutdown, or put the database into online backup mode, but need to review the Oracle documentation for limitations. The tools of choice for Oracle is RMAN, which does not require extra logging or backup mode.
You can use tar or rsync if you prefer to backup data to a shared storage through NFS or use tar to stream the data to an attached tape drive. There is plenty of information and tutorials on how to perform incremental backups on the web, and here tar incremental backup

  • Cloning a bootable disk as a system backup

I have a Sun M5000 System running Solaris 10. It has 4 slots in the face panel for removable drives. The 1st 2 slots are the ones we use, for the mirrored, boot file system. I don't have tape drives on this system, but I do want to be able to make system backups.
What I do have are more identical, removable drives that I can add to the 2 other slots. (and we have the 2nd IO controller module to make those slots active) It seems to me that the easiest "system backup" to restore after a disaster would be to somehow 100% clone the mirrorred boot drives to a 2nd pair, and remove them for safekeeping. This pair could then be put into a replacement system, and immediately boot as the old system.
Is this possible ? Is there a simple technique to do this ? Hopefully it can be done "live" and not need to be in single user mode, as this system is in use 24/7.
    .

the no tape drive may hurt you in the long run if you update a lot of data on your existing mirror. you can use dd to do what you want, use meta* cmds or vxvm if thats what is the current env. note that if you update lots of data on your mirror, having the old boot volume usable may not help much or will result in lots of rebuild time anyway.

  • System Backup problems

I have an HP Pavilion dv6 laptop with Windows 7 on it. Everything seems to run fine, but I am constantly bombarded with messages concerning my system backup. For whatever reason, the only choice to save a backup to (unles I connect an external drive) is my E drive, which id dedicated to "HP_TOOLS." Obviously this drive has very limited space and only has 1.07 GB worth of free space. As soon as I do a backup I am greeted with a barrage of messages telling me I have no space left.
I am unsure of why I cannot access my D "RECOVERY" drive to save backups with 2.32 GB of space free. I've been deleting my backups on occasion to make room for new ones, just to find tons more of the same low-space messages. How fix these problems?

    Hi
As i see the Recovery D drive is a back up operating system for you and will have very limited space on it. In case you need to take a back you can back up data on CD/DVD or you could back on External Hard drive.
Click start then control panel Back up data then select the DVD drive or the External device that will fix your issue. Please dont select the Recovery D drive as it will have less space and you will get the message Low disc space.

  • Distributed System Backup

I just installed my first Distributed System. I am now trying to backup the system by using DB13 to start online backup using brtools. I have been looking for documentation on Distributed System backup. The best thing I found that could make some sense is SAP Note 1025707, 446172. So here is my landscape. I have one server call ORA which will end up hosting 3 oracle databases called SMP, NWP, SDP. There is no abap or java installed on the host only the database. I have other servers that host the abap and java stacks.
From reading the notes, I am guessing I need to install either a gateway process to do backup or do something with ssh. I am thinking the gateway process. First am I on the right track what needs to be done. If so should I install one gateway process as oraadm that could that control all the other SIDs? Or do I have to install a different gateway process for each SID? Or am I way off and there is whole different solution I should be using.
    Thank you
    Matthew

    Hi,
I don't think so you need to install sap gateway on database sever for same.
You need to configured init<SID>.sap which is located in /oracle/<SID>/xx_xx/dbs and set the respective file permission for brarchive, brbackup, brconnect, brtools.
    chown ora<sid>:sapsys brarchive
    chown ora<sid>:sapsys brbackup
    chown ora<sid>:sapsys brconnect
    chown ora<sid>:sapsys brtools
    chmod 4775 brarchive
    chmod 4775 brbackup
    chmod 4775 brconnect
    chmod 4775 brtools

  • System backup as a precaution.

I have the production server running solaris 10 and Oracle. I need to plan for the system backup in case of crash need to bring back all the file systems. As of now i have around 150GB data.
Can some one tell what kind of backup strategy should i follow?
PS:As a DBA, I am not a full fledged system admin and i do play a secondary role.
Appreciate if i can get some code tips too.

    Shankie,
If you have a Hug disk, you can create a similar configuration as you have in your OS using soft partitions, so you can copy the filesystem in there using ufsdump. There is only one problem ufsdump recommend to have the filesystem umounted when you do the backup, the reason of that is to keep the integrity, of course you can do so with the Operating system, so for the OS you can do it with the filesystem mounted, however be sure that you are not udpate user, kernel or patching the OS at the time that you are doing the backup.
Also remember that ufsdump is for filesystem not for directories so you can't store several filesystem in the same filesystem's backup.
I think you can trick the OS and store the backup in a file so, just move the file to the store.
    I hope that Helps,
    JoshD
