System came up, cannot launch app, cannot select anything on desktop

My 1.6 G5 (80GB HD, 1.25G RAM) running 10.4.7 is having the following problem:
- System started OK;
- I could use my mouse;
- Screensaver worked when I moved the mouse to the Hot Corner;
- but I could not select/highlight any item on the desktop;
- nor could I launch anything from the Dock (when I tried to click on an application, it would not launch)
I tried rebooting it a few times and got the same result. Any suggestions?

I believe you're right, the hard disk probably is not stable.Well, it's a possibility but I never said that, more likely it's software unless you are having other problems with your drive.
Why did repair disk find errors?
Have you run "Apple Hardware Test"?
If CD's came with your computer it is on a CD labeled "Hardware Test" To test with CD, insert the CD and restart holding the "c" key until you see the spinning gear.
If DVD insert DVD then:
1. Turn on or restart the computer.
2. Immediately press and hold the Option key. After a few seconds, the Startup Manger screen appearsThe Startup Manager scans for available volumes.
3. Optional: Clicking the circular arrow rescans for other volumes, including NetBoot Server volumes. You can eject any disc in the drive or open an empty tray-loading drive by holding down the Command (Apple) and Period (.) keys. The Command-Period key combination will also close the drive. After inserting a CD capable of starting up your computer, you could rescan for volumes.
4. Click the startup volume you want to use. "Hardware Test"
If hardware test does not mount or does not run bring the computer to Authorized Apple Repair.
As far as, transferring your system to the other drive it is simple. You could use SuperDuperand it's free for cloning. But assuming the problem is in the software (in your system) you would just be cloning over the same problem.
If you want to go that route, I'd reinstall from disk and then update to 10.4.9 with the Combo Updater. You'd also have to re-install your third party software. Yeah.
But if it is stable now, why not make a clone for backup on your second drive and that way if you do run into an issue, you'll be able to use the second drive to erase and re-install on your master.
Why did you not have a clone on your second drive before this?

The ARD agent ones vary depending on installation; that one looks like a language localisation.
Nothing to worry about. (and it and any others will appear everytime you repair permissions).
As long as the message 'permissions repair complete' is given, there is no fault.

System file associations - cannot select Bridge.

Since I upgraded to CS6 last year, I can't seem to change my file type associations to point image files to open in Bridge, and it's driving me crazy. On a Windows computer, I right-click and select "open with", then browse and choose Bridge.exe, but for some reason the selection doesn't persist, and I'm back to whatever was originally assigned for that file type.
This started happening when I uninstalled Adobe CS4 on my system. I have a feeling in the registry the path is still pointing to the old folders that are no longer there, (or something like that) but I don't know how to fix. I thought upgrading to CC would fix it, but it didn't.
I would appreciate if anybody has any ideas.

It was really convenient being able to launch it from within a folder full of images, instead of starting it generically, then browsing to that folder. With me so far?

Never used Bridge this way because Bridge is the first application I start and it is the central place for my work as photographer. On a Mac I tried what you always did, in Finder choose info for a selected DNG file and set Bridge as application to open it in.
It accepted this and double click on it did start Bridge. However my problem is that I always use stacks to organize my files in the content panel for a better oversight. The dng file I selected in Finder was part of such a stack and opening it the way your would like to use works but did unstack al my files in the content panel.
There is a longstanding problem with stacks ungroup them selves every now and then so I don't know it was a coincidence but I'm not giving it an other try…

Using Bridge CC on a Mac with OSX10.8.4 I still have the ability to select Bridge as default application to open a file in. I have no reason to believe this should be exclusive for Mac so the problem is likely to be found on your side I'm afraid
Don't know anything relevant about Windows, for a Mac you could try to repair permissions, try an other users etc but that is no help to you at this moment.

I cannot select anything with the trackpad on my Macbook 7,1

My 6-month-old son was playing an online baby game but got some saliva on the trackpd. It seemed to be very little and I wiped it up quickly. However, after cleanup, the mouse was barely moving and erratic. I shutdown for a day and on powerup the mouse cursor was moving fine again. The problem now is that when I click the trackpad to make a selection, nothing registers. Clicking sounds seem normal but there is no response to a click.
To complicate matters, I ran the Apple Hardware Test (initiated by powering up and press/holding the D-key before the grey screen appeared). Upon initiation of the hardware test, I noticed that the trackpad is functioning normally (cursor movement AND click-selection). I figured perhaps the test jogged something to make it work so proceeded to restart. When I got to the login screen, cursor movement is working find, but again I cannot make any selections and therefore cannot even log in. Shouldn't I also be able to login by selecting the account with the keyboard and pressing enter (without using the trackpad)? If yes, then that doesn't work either.
All this to say that it seems that the problem is software related since the hardware test passes without error. (I have't tried an external mouse as I don't have one handy.) Any thoughts on how to correct this?

Problem solved. Took it to the Genius Bar where the tech guy went through his diagnostic process. He finally reset the PRAM and all is well.
Gotta admit, I was skeptical in bringing it to Apple. I figured since it's out of warranty they'll probably just try to soak me for a ridiculously-priced repair. Nope, 20 minutes after walking in, I was a very satisfied customer!

When I open Safari I get a ipad giveaway hoax that locksup the system and I cannot do anything but close safari, how do I get past this hoax?

Not sure how to get around a hoax about winning an Ipad, cannot click away to a new page, the home page no longer loads etc... All I can do is open and close safari. Three seperate windows open up, two that talk about the Ipad and one little box that says click here to accept.

Which OS X version are you running?
To prevent the loading of the nasty stuff, try this -
Click the Safari icon in the Dock, then immediately press and hold Command-. (Command-periodkey). This should allow Safari to load and run, but prevent it from loading any specific page.
Then go to Safari's Preferences (in the Safari menu) and check your Homepage setting. You may need to redo it.
Before going anywhere on the web, I would also clear the History.

Help cannot install anything, installer keeps crashing.

I have a G4 12inch powerbook 1.5 running the latest Tiger operating system. I cannot install anything that uses pkg, such as Safari beta or iWork 08 trial. I double click the pkg icon and nothing happens. When I go check console this is what I see.

Try these in order. Stop if one of them allows .pkg files to install:
- Run Disk Utility to check for errors. (Do not repair permissions when booted to the install disk.)
- Try dragging and dropping the .pkg file on to the actual Installer. You can find it in /Applications/Utilities.
- Insert your Tiger install disk into your computer. Open a Finder window showing the contents. On the install disk go into the Applications folder, then into the Utilities folder. Drag the Installer icon from the install disk into the /Applications/Utilities folder on your hard drive, telling it to replace the version there.
- Archive and Install, preserving Network and User settings

I cannot export anything

I created a project in Motion 5.0.7. but I cannot export anything. The field where it says send (Bereitstellen, since I am german) is completely greyed out, I cannot select anything.

I've posted with this problem before, as well. My solution was to open a brand new project with the same settings as the current project that won't export. Then copy and paste everything from your first project into the new one, hopefully the share option will function, it did for me. Good luck.

My BROWSER LOCKS UP AND I CANNOT DO ANYTHING!

When I open Firefox, it freezes! I cannot select anything or type in anything! When I look at Task Manager, FIREFOX Memory Usage is sometimes up over 200,000k-300,000k. I have to wait long minutes, even longer before I can even type or select my bookmarks. Sometime I have to kill the process and just quit. This just started several days ago!

Try changing your firefox start page to "show a blank page" (in Options). And try NOT clicking the "Home" button on the toolbar.
If that works, then you have the same "about:home" problem as some of the rest of us.

The camera cannot be "lost" as it is a part of iOS. It can be disabled via Restrictions in Settings > General > Restrictions.
As for apps, ensure they are selected to sync in iTunes.

What are you refering to here? Mac OS 9 came out around 2001 ( or about ). Mac OS 9 last run in an emulation mode in 10.4.11 -- Tiger. Mac OS 9 ran on PPC machines that were last produced before 2004 or so.

Fortunately, AirPlay does not cost anything as it is a streaming protocol used by Apple. Currently, the AirPort Express and Apple TV are AirPlay-ready. A number of other companies, like JBL, iHome, Denon and Klipsch are also rumored to be working on AirPlay versions of their products.
Your other option would be to get an AirPort Express and connect it to your Onkyo analog or optical digital audio input and stream from iTunes that way. I currently do this with my 10+ year old Harmon Kardon HT receiver.
