System FCS error frames on Catalyst 3750

Please,
may someone explain what are the "System FCS error frames" I see with "show controllers ethernet-controller" on some ports of a Catalyst (on trunk and also on access ports) WS-C3750G-24TS-S (3 switches in stackwyse)?
Error counters advance slowly, but they do grow... and I am afraid this could be the reason for variable slow access time to a server application menu...
For example "8 System FCS error frames".
The ports are connected to a PIX-515E and I see the same error count on the firewall interfaces (PIX "show interface" command shows me "8 input errors, 8 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 8 ignored, 0 abort")
A few errors may be seen also on other ports, connected to other (C3550)switches.
I tried to upgrade the IOS version, so I loaded "ipbase 12.2(25)SEB4 " on the Catalyst 3750, but it did not solve the problem.
PIX firewalls are running software 6.3(4).
Why these errors are called "System FCS error frames" ? I could not find anything searching on Cisco CCO!
Thanks

I apologies for the delay answering, my notebook has been down for 5 days and also cco access password...
Thank you for the explanation and suggestion.
We have a second rack with another three switch 4750 in stackwyse, same models as the "faulty" ones, and the errors are not present on those switches, so it must be something hardware related on the first group of switches.
I cannot touch those devices at the moment, we captured traffic frames with 3 Notebook PCs running "Ethereral" lan sniffer, traffic to and from the server and two clients and we discovered that in different ports of those switches, some packets never reach the clients, causing many TCP retransmissions, especially witch continuous traffic (http get and ftp transfers). This problem is visible on some, but not all, of the catalsyt 3750 switches in stackwyse, but in every one of the three switches. We are planning to go on-site and replace the hopefully faulty one ( or reseat the cables as you suggested).
Is this a problem you have seen before?

  • Has anybody captured an error frame occurence with CAN driver version 2.2

I was very excited about the appearance of the Comm Error Frame Type in version 2.0 of the driver. I have a Series 2 card and was working with the CAN driver version 2.2 to attempt capture error frames with an in house written tool.
Currently we have a tool from Vector that we must use to monitor our CAN system for Error Frames that occur due to a discrepancy in the ATMEL CAN core that we are using. We would like to get rid of the Vector tool and though we could because this capability appeared to be available in the NI driver.
I executed ncConfig with NC_ATTR_LOG_COMM_ERRS = NC_TRUE and the called the ncRead command to get data from the Read Queue. The tools built upon the NI CAN driver and the Vector tool seen exactly the same data, except that when the a communication attempt was turned into an error, the Vector tool indicated and Error Frame had occurred and nothing was available from the NI tool.
Has anybody captured an NC_FRMTYPE_COMM_ERR Frame with the ncRead command, and if so would you be willing to help.
    Thanks.

Thanks for all of the support on this issue, I am better understanding how the NI CAN card works.
However, the described functionality provides little to no value in how I am using the National Instruments CAN card and I have submitted a Product Suggestion through the link provided earlier in this thread. Your example describes exactly why the implemented Error reporting is not useful. Many errors have to occur before the transition to Error Passive, but you only get the last one, which may or may not reflect what the overall problem is in the system.
Also, this leads me to another problem that I am having. The transition to Error Passive and Bus Off were added in a recent version of the CAN driver. Was there ever any though to making this configurable. It is problematic for me every time I restart the system that the NI card is connected to because the NI card ends up in Bus Off. I know this is following the CAN Protocol (our physical layer has Dominant = Zero = 0 V, when the system is powered down the NI Card would see may consecutive Dominant bits) because of Rule 6, section 8 (Fault Confinement) in the Bosch CAN specification. However, the NI card in my application is being used to monitor and interact with the system, it is not part of the functioning system. When it goes to Bus Off, my test application is dead. I would rather the occurrence of errors get reported, so I can see what the problem is, and fix what is wrong with the system, but still continue to function as best possible. I use the NI card in a lab environment for testing.
    Again, thanks for everything

  • Catalyst 3750 and jumbo frames

We're looking to implement a gigabit segment with a 3750 switch, with the latest apple imac G5 clients connected and and an xserve G5 connected doing link aggregation using a 4 port smalltree NIC.
Although the Xserve supports jumbo frames i believe the imac NICs DON'T support jumbo frames although the operating system does( the imac NICs DO support 1000T ) Ideally we'd want the 3750 switch to be configured for Jumbo frames. The 3750 switch we've chosen has all ports of 10/100/1000T with the SMI, so all ports will have the MTU set at 9000 if we enable jumbo.
Although the Xserve will be fine, i'm worried about traffic that ingresses from the xserve and egresses out to a 10/100/1000 port to which an imac is connected which i believe does not support Jumbo frames. What are the issues in terms of connectivity and dropped packets for an imac G5 connected to a 3750 ?
seeing as the MTU is set globally and all our ports are gigabit, and machines will be connected to these ports that don't support jumbo but are advertised as having 'gigabit capability'
Sorry if these sounds like an incoherent rant, but i needed to provide as much info as possible. Help much appreciated

just to add, in comparison HP gigabit switches can do jumbo vlan on a per vlan and per port basis it's a shame the 3750 can't do that

  • Catalyst (3750 24 10/100/1000T) and (3750 12 SFP) Stacking Problems

    Dear all
I'm having a very strange situation here (at least for me)
    we have 4 core switches
    2 x   WS-C3750G-24T-S Catalyst 3750 24 10/100/1000T + IPB Image
    and
    2 x   WS-C3750G-12S-S Catalyst 3750 12 SFP + IPB Image
Stack configuration is done this way
when the switches are powered on, the first two SFP core switches are seen as a single stack with the stack master LED turned green on the first switch
the other two (24 10/100/1000T) switches have the RPS LEDs always green, mode cannot be changed, and cannot be accessed by Console connection
but when the (24 10/100/1000T) are powered off, the first (SFP) switch in the stack reports that " Switch 3 and 4 has been removed from Stack "
which means they are stacked but there's something wrong, because
only the SFP ports are shown in the " Show interfaces status " , the ethernet ports of the bottom switches are not present !!!
can you please tell me what's the poblem ?

    Dear Daniel
Sorry for my delayed response but i was actually quite busy
but the problem was actually in another sense
the default profile for the Catalyst 3750 SFP is the Aggregate SDM Template
while the 3750 10/100/1000 ethernet Switch Default SDM profile was Desktop profile
so i had an SDM mismatch

  • Policer with IPv6 class-map on Catalyst 3750

    Hi,
    I've the following problem.
It's my goal to ratelimit incoming IPv6 traffic dependent on the destination IP address range.
On a Catalyst 3750 (Image: c3750-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE1.bin) I've set up the configuration as follows:
    mls qos
    ipv6 access-list DESTINATION-RANGE-A
     permit ipv6 any 2007::/16
    ipv6 access-list DESTINATION-RANGE-B
     permit ipv6 any 2B03::/16
    class-map match-all A
     match access-group name DESTINATION-RANGE-A
    class-map match-all B
     match access-group name DESTINATION-RANGE-B
    policy-map RL-POLICY
     class A
      police 2000000 8000 exceed-action drop
     class B
      police 6000000 8000 exceed-action drop
    interface GigabitEthernet1/0/7
     switchport access vlan 90
     load-interval 30
     service-policy input RL-POLICY
The last CLI command which should bind the policy to the specific interface, leads to the following error message
QoS: class(A) IPv6 class not supported on interface GigabitEthernet1/0/7
Are hardware/software limitations the reason for this behavior or is there any misconfiguration?
Thanks in advance for your help!

If you are thinking of IPv6 prefix I tried everything. From /128 for single host to /64, nothing works.

  • Kgepop: no error frame to pop to for AND In-flux value for a pin

    Hello,
I'have a big problems with my oracle forms web.
Since we have make an upgarde from 10g to 11gr1 of our system, some forms crashe when we make a search from the menu bar.
in the log file there are these errors:
    1) FRM-93652 : The runtime process has terminated abnormally.
    2) FRM-93546 : external message from runtime process: kgepop: no error frame to pop to for error 600
    3) FRM-93546 : external message from runtime process: In-flux value for a pin at 0x1f63b008
I've test with a button in the forms and not by the menu and it work fine.
    thanks in advance

  • /31 on Catalyst 3750 routed port

I've discovered the feature 'Using 31-Bit Prefixes on IPv4 Point-to-Point Links' and I'm interested in implementing it on a point-to-point uplink network that terminates on one end to a Catalyst 3750 routed FastEthernet port ("no switchport").
I can enter the IP address in the interface config (172.16.100.0 255.255.255.254), and I get the warning "% Warning: use /31 mask on non point-to-point interface cautiously". Since I can guarantee that this is in fact a point-to-point uplink to a Layer 3 device, can I safely ignore the warning? Is there any way to configure the interface explicitly as a Point-to-Point interface instead of a broadcast interface?
    Thanks!
    -Mason

    Hi,
It doesn't appear the error is platform specific. I am getting the same error in my lab 2600 when configuring a /31 bit mask.
You would use the /31 bit mask only on a p-t-p interface hence, you don't need to tell the interface it's a p-t-p interface. I don't know of any generic command to tell the broadcast interface that it's a p-t-p interface. There is a OSPF command but that doesn't have anything to do with this setup.

  • Catalyst 3750 interface explaination

    Dear Sir,
    I don't understand as follows :-
    1.) why on Catalyst3750 interface fastethernet 1/0/1 ?? <--- what's the meaning of 1/0/1 ?
2.) what's the meaning of no mdix auto?
    Please explain and advise.
    Thank you.

The 3750 has many interesting features, I recommaned you go through before you connect your switches in a production environment.
Basically, you should provision your stack master with the number of switches and their types. You could provision as well the interfaces with their corresponding configurations, even though the other elements are still not connected yet. This way, you ensure, when you add a provisioned element with the right number, it will take exactly the provisioned configuration you've already set on the master,... as well when changing an element with an other, when moving it,... you will have just to provision its number and then connect it to the stack while is not yet powered on.
Second, it is recommanded to set priority to each element, this way you will have a deterministic configuration and you know in advance which one will be reelected as master in any sitution.
If no provision is set on the stack master, when you connect a switch, it has by default the number "1", in this case the newly added switch will take the lowest switch number available (2).
    1.) 1/0/1 --> so the second will be 2/0/1.
And to address its ports you tape: 2/0/1, 2/0/2, 2/0/3,2/0/4,...2/0/24,...
How to stacked both of the catalyst 3750? just purchase one stackable cable to link both of them and will it automatically configure the 2nd switch from 1/0/1 to 2/0/1 after we plug in the stackable cable into the 2nd switch.
For large deployment I recommand the switches to be provisioned manually: Before stacking the switches:
1/ power on the switch that will be the stack master, then wait till it will be in "Ready" state by issuing "show switch detail" command.
2/ Provision the stack master with the desired stack configuration (numbers of switches, types of switches and interfaces configurations).
    3/ Reload the stack master.
4/ Provision the second switch with its number and type.
5/ Power off the second switch afetr having saved its configuration.
6/ Stack the second switch to the stack master.
7/ power it on. It will take the provisioned configuration on the stack master.
The advantage of this procedure is that switches could not be renumbered while stacked and running.
Repeat steps 4 to 7 for each new element having been provisioned in the stack master.
Do not forget to save after each step.
2.) so i put "no mdix auto" on catalyst 3750, what's the meaning and impact?
no mdix-auto will disable the advanced feature of abstructing the type of cable (staight throu or cross over). You will downgrade to the standard interfaces specifications. In fact, mdix-auto (activated by default) permits to not to have the "overhead" of distinguishing crossover and straight throu cables, the interfaces will adapt automatically to the type of cable.
An other advantage of this function is that it opimises (combined with other functions) error and recovery procedures in layers 1 and 2.

    Alex,
I'm working with a client that has a similar issue.  They have a 4402 and about 30 APs.  The FCS counters on all of the APs are growing at a fast pace (millions a day).  I've opened a TAC case to try and determine if the errors I'm seeing are "normal" (within an acceptable range).  The impression I have, thus far, is that it is not acceptable.  Since the users are not happy with the performance of the applications which rely on the wireless network, we've decided to pursue this further.   They had me dumb down the APs by making a few basic changes to the wlan and that did not reduce the rate of errors.  Now they're focusing on transmit levels.  The client only uses wireless from some thin clients and TAC wants me to find out what the max. transmit power level is for these thin clients.  Wireless is not my cup of tea so I'm not going to try and get into a technical discussion.  I'll only pass along what TAC is telling me (as I understand it).  The APs can transmit at one of 8 power levels.  Each power level is 1/2 the power level of the level above it.  For example, PL1 would be 100 milliwatts, PL2 would be 50 milliwatts, PL3 is 25, etc.  In any case, suppose that you have a device that has a maximum transmit power level of 30 milliwatts and your APs are set to transmit at 50 milliwatts.  What will happen is that as the client devices get further and further out towards the edge of their transmission range, they will still be able to pick up signal from an AP but the AP will no longer be able to pick up signal from the client device.  So, the client device will try to send data to the AP but the data will arrive at the AP with errors.  In trying to explain this to me, they used voice as an example.  They talked about how in wireless environments in which wireless IP phones exist, sometimes the phones will have a transmit level of about 30 milliwatts and what will happen is that users will experience 1-way audio issues because the stronger signal from the WAP will reach the phone but the phone signal will not reach the WAP.  So as a phone user starts to roam further from the WAP, the user will still hear the caller on the other end but the caller on the other end will not hear the wireless phone user.  As I understand it, the solution to that would be to reduce the transmit power on the APs to be more inline with the maximum transmit power of the lowest common denominator device on the network.  The downside to that, though, would be more holes in coverage.  You'd probably find yourself in a position where you'd have to deploy more APs to fill in the holes.  At least that's the gist I'm getting from the discussion I had with TAC on Friday.   In any case, if we end up doing somethnig that reduces the error rates I'll let you know what we end up doing.
    Regards,
    Steven

  • System fan error on g62-352ca on startup. are there two fans ie a cpu fan and a system fan?

I get a system fan error on power up?     Are there two fans in the G52-352CA?   Ie a general system fan and a CPU cooling fan or just the one CPU/heatsink fan?
If it is the CPU/heatsink fan then there are 4 part numbers for different options.   Is there some way to tell from the model number or features as to which is needed.    I would prefer to have the part in hand before opening everything up.    Are there better fans to buy and if so how do I find them?       This unit was always running a little on the warm/hot side,

  • Radio Utilization and FCS Errors

Here is an output from our Aruba Airwave server. I've been trying to reduce the constant radio utilization on some of our APs. I succesfully did it by disabling the 1 and 2Mb data rates on the APs. However, for some reason the FCS errors have gone up on all APs. Any ideas why? The graph on the left shows a drop in interference, so I would think the FCS errors would decrease.
    Thanks,
    Chris

On a good note, it looks like the drop in radio utilization translated to a significant throughput increase. On some of our APs, we are seeing a 100% increase in throughput speeds. This was using a 2.4Ghz N client with 20MHz channels connecting to an 1140 AP. I'm going to do a site-survey later on some of our 3500 APs.
I also temporarily disabled the 5.5 and 11 Mb speeds and saw another slight (20-30%) jump in throughput, but we aren't ready to kick 802.11b clients off the network.
