System just won't work...

After upgrading to Leopard (Archive and Upgrade), my MacBook Pro is non-responsive.
Upon boot, I see the dock and my applications starting up (iCal, NeoOffice, QS, X, etc). After a couple seconds, the dock, all of my desktop icons, and the finder bar disappear. I'm left with a mouse cursor on my desktop.
I can boot into "Safe Boot" mode and Leopard comes up.
Any ideas? Anything I should try? Should I just scrap this installation and erase the harddrive?
Thanks
-Eddie

There are no recent crash logs in ~/Library/Logs, but two from yesterday (this has been a long upgrade) in /Library/Logs.
The crashed process is mdworker in both logs.
I'm also showing a ton of airport errors in the generic console log.
Thanks,
-Eddie

  • Mac Sleep Timer (through 'Energy Saver' in System Preferences) won't work

    Hello,
    I have a MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009) running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3,
    and it has been installed with the latest software updates possible.
    (The latest update is the 'Security Update 2010-003')
    Previously I was using Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 on my MacBook,
    and I can vaguely remember the timed computer sleep through Energy Saver would work.
    That is, when the counter's time matches the amount of time I specified (e.g. 10 minutes), the computer enters sleep mode and displays a pulsing power light.
    After upgrading to Snow Leopard I can barely remember the scheduled computer sleep will work as I don't really notice how it sleeps / I will shut down my MacBook before I go to bed.
    ==========
    However, last night I was really tired and slept in front of my MacBook unconsciously.
    When I woke up, I found that my MacBook didn't display a pulsing power light but a continuously-growing power light.
    I tapped the trackpad and the display turned on, so I knew that my MacBook didn't go to sleep a whole night.
    *What that means is that the Sleep Timer (through 'Energy Saver' in System Preferences) won't work.*
    But the timed display sleep DOES work.
    ==========
    After spending a whole day Googling,
    I found that there are plenty of people suffering the same problem as me, although their Macs and OSs vary.
    I also found an official support page from Apple concerning the related issue:
    Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
    I tried the following methods but still can't resolve the problem:
    _- boot my MacBook in safe mode_
    _- use the 'Disk Utility' to repair Disk Permissions through booting my MacBook from the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installation DVD_
    _- reset NVRAM (Intel-based) (as PRAM is used by PowerPC-based Macs)_
    _- reset SMC (System Management Controller)_
    NONE of the above-mentioned methods can resolve the problem.
    Althought I am sure that the Spotlight isn't indexing the hard drive, and I just start my computer and do nothing and wait for the scheduled computer sleep, the scheduled computer sleep just won't work.
    In the other Mac forum, I saw someone suggest installing an application called PleaseSleep:
    http://www.dragonone.com/products/macosx/pleasesleep/
    It works.
    But I really want to find out what caused this problem as this is a function shipped with Mac which is expected to work normally.
    What's more, Apple is claiming to be a green Apple, right?

    ==========
    Looking forward to your replies! Thanks in advance!

    Found this discussion by googling "com.apple.systempreferencescouldn't find any matches"...
    One month ago I bought a brand new Macbook Pro 13", and after a couple of weeks I realized it wasn't sleeping on its own when it should, per the system preferences. (I did sleep when I chose "Sleep" in the menus or closed it... It just wouldn't sleep on its own, while open.) What was extra frustrating was that it was intermittent... It would sleep on its own maybe 1/3 of the time, but other times it would NEVER go to sleep. I deleted PowerManagement.plist, reset the SMC, etc... No luck.
    I took it to the "geniuses" at the Apple Store, and the guy took all of five minutes trying to diagnose the problem. When my MBP wouldn't sleep on its own, he promptly replaced it with a new one. That was nice, but I actually would have preferred that he diagnosed and fixed it. (I think the store was so swamped with people coming in for service that day that they were doing anything they could to close cases and get customers out of there ASAP.)
    Now, sitting here with my 48-hour-old MBP, I still have the problem. The other one was so new that I had barely put anything on it yet. The only applications I had put on it were MS Office for Mac 2011, Firefox, Chrome, and Adobe Flash Player. I've put Office and Flash Player on this one, but not yet Firefox or Chrome. That's it. No other customization or fancy business.
    I looked into the Console just now, and I see the "Couldn'tfind any matches" entry popping up again and again. The last three seemed to pop upright around the time when my MBP should have gone to sleep on its own, but not down to the second, so it's hard to definitively point at that and say it's it for sure.
    They need to fix this!!

  • My front Facing camera just won't work It freezes everytime

    My front Facing camera just won't work It freezes everytime

    Please tell me that it has NEVER been jailbroke.  If that's the case, here are some standard repair procedures:
    First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
    At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
    If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • Help - Php just WON't work

    I followed these directions and it simply won't work. Help. Why don't you put PHP and MYSQL in the installer itself? This is why I use Apache, and I can't stand Apache, I want to use sun, but apparently there is no hope for mysql to actually worth with your server, and php can?
    4.2 Configuring Web Server to use PHP as NSAPI Plug-in
    To configure the Web Server to use PHP as NSAPI plug-in, perform the following steps:
    Go to the web server instance's config directory.
    For example (UNIX):
    /sun/webserver70/https-mywebserver/config
    Add the following lines to the magnus.conf file:
    UNIX/Linux:
    # Initialize PHP v5.x
    Init fn="load-modules" shlib="libphp5.so" funcs="php5_init,php5_close,php5_execute,php5_auth_trans"
    Init fn="php5_init" errorString="PHP Initialization Failed!"
    Windows:
    # Initialize PHP v5.x
    Init fn="load-modules" shlib="php5nsapi.dll" funcs="php5_init,php5_close,php5_execute,php5_auth_trans"
    Init fn="php5_init" errorString="PHP Initialization Failed!"
    Edit the obj.conf file to enable the Web Server to process a PHP-based request.
    Important note: If there are more than one file with the name "*obj.conf", be sure to edit the correct file. Use wadm's get-virtual-server-prop command to get the correct file name. For more information on this command, see http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-3283/6n5h03hsu?a=view.
    For example:
    <web server install dir>/bin/wadm get-virtual-server-prop --user=admin --config=CONFIG --vs=VS object-file
    (a) Add the following lines as the first directive of the "default" object in the obj.conf file.
    <Object name="default">
    Service type="magnus-internal/php" fn="php5_execute"
    </Object>
    (b) Modify the PathCheck directive if you want the Web Server to handle index.php as an index for document directories.
    change
    PathCheck fn="find-index" index-names="index.html"
    to
    PathCheck fn="find-index" index-names="index.html,index.php"
    Add the following line to the mime.types file to register the PHP extensions with the Web Server.
    type=magnus-internal/php exts=php,php3,php4,php5
    (Windows only). Add the <php install directory> to the system PATH so that web server can load the required dlls. Because the web server runs as a windows service, any change in the system PATH requires a restart to take effect.
    For example:
    PATH=...;C:\Sun\Webserver70\plugins\php;

    You might also consider simply using the pre-compiled, comes with an installer script copy of PHP from here .
    Unfortunately this version of PHP is a bit dated. Hopefully Sun will update it at some point.

  • ITunes just won't work!

    Hi there,
    I've been trying to get iTunes working and it just won't! I have had an iPhone for a few months, and not sure whether this or a software update has anything to do with it? I basically use my iMac for the internet and as a glorified jukebox, but now I can't get it to open iTunes, the icon just bounces in the tray and then disappears.
    If I look at the iTunes application by clicking on the "Macintosh HD" icon, it looks like the computer thinks it's opening it though as the last time of use of the application is always when I last tried to open it (unsuccessfully). Please don't tell me to turn it off and on again as I've been at it for weeks! I've tried getting rid of iTunes and downloading it again, but that's not working. I can still see all of my songs, and have just found out that if I go into my music folder, I can preview the songs, which makes me think that there must be some form of music playing software still working on my computer!
    It's also affected iPhoto and Safari, as they are both doing the bouncy tray thing, but I think if I can fix one, I can fix them all (except I can't fix one!).
    Please help! So frustrating!

    Hi mm-
    One of the users on our network has the same problem (She's running OS 10.4). We've updated the OS (dot 11 now? whatever it is -- the newest iteration of 10.4). Here's what we've done (not necessarily in order, as we've performed some of these 'fixes' more than once):
    1) Ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions
    2) Reinstalled iTunes with a fresh download from the Apple site.
    3) Deleted the Genius list from the iTunes folder.
    4) We even ran some maintenance in Terminal -- sudo periodic daily, weekly, monthly, and update_prebindings.
    We still get the same inability to launch iTunes. If we click on the icon in the dock, it bounces once or twice and then stops. No launch, no error. No iTunes.

  • Express appears to be fine but just won't work

    I am still running 10.3.9 with my G4 ibook and until a couple days had no complaints about my airport express. The green light is on, all the bars are a go. Except, when I try to get onto the internet (using Road Runner), nothing loads. I don't even get an error page - it's almost like it doesn't know it can't get on. Like I said, everything looks fine (all systems go). I unplugged my express and was able to connect to the internet directly from the laptop so it's not a service issue. It's like it spontaneously just doesn't work. I've had the signal go out before and have reset it - this time is different because everything appears to be fine (I've unplugged it, etc, all the usual tricks). I would have expected to get an amber light or to be unable to access my wireless network (which I can do). Has this thing just died and I don't know it? Any words of advice/wisdom out there? Thanks!

    Hi campo72,
    I understand that you are having a problem with your wireless connection. Could you please tell me what operating system you running on your Mac? I suggest you follow the steps in this document for Installing the Printer Software for a Wireless Network Connection.
    I hope this help, let me know.
    Thank you,

    I am on systemd now, but it was the case since always, even before I moved.
    Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

    This is my take, which might not describe reality properly:
    Low swappiness favours keeping programs in memory and dropping cache, high swappiness means swapping unused (least recently used) portions of programs in favour of cache. Programs can work properly with a big part of them swapped out. They also need cache. If the part of the program you want to access got swapped out or the program doesn't have the stuff it wants to use in cache, it needs to use the disk, hence one perceives a greater delay.
    When you run the script, it continuously asks for more and more memory, it creates great memory pressure, so caches have to be dropped and least recently used parts of programs swapped out. Dropping cache is instantaneous, swapping out needs writing to the disk. Heavy swapping causes lack of responsiveness (light swapping out shouldn't be perceivable). How much swapping out occurs when running the script depends on how much the kernel deems viable for swapping out - the longer the system runs and the greater the amount of rarely used memory, the greater the amount that can be swapped out.
    The output of your "free" shows more than 1 GB free - the kernel shouldn't worry about swapping out or dropping cache at that point, whatever the swappiness.
    I prefer to have swappiness set to at least 60, so that unused portions of programs get slowly swapped out while my caches grow (my X takes 33 MB of my swap and 25 MB of my RAM at the moment).

  • Acrobat X XI Windows 7 just won't work

    I don't know if this is the appropriate place for this question, there doesn't seem to be much of an altenrative.
    I attempted to use a trial of acrobat x pro some months back but was not able to get the product to work no matter what I tried (installing reinstalling etc etc ad nauseum)
    Acrobat 9 works fine without any issues.
    Acrobat X will not work
    Today I've tried xi pro - I thought great, maybe it has been fixed; however, I have the same kinds of issues. All the program dialogue boxes are misshapen, bits are missing and I have to resort to task manager to shut them down as they won't otherwise. There's also weird looking - big, misshapen text that has 'crossed out' lines through it - one lot mentioned security certificates.
    I'm attaching a screenshot of the kind of dialogue box I get.
    I'm using CS6 as a trial, though I've purchased the PS subscription.
    I'm using windows 7 64 bit
    I plan to purchase the full CS6 next year as a student, but theres not much point if it won't work,,,
    I'd love a solution to this.
    Thanks

    Thank you so much, I don't think I would have ever found that post - and it worked, I'm extremely grateful for your help, you've made a big difference to my day

  • IMovie '09 just won't work

    I was working on a video in iMovie '09 and it stopped responding. So I forced closed and opened back up and since then (about 2 weeks ago) it just doesn't work, and by that I mean I can click nothing, nothing is responding but when I go to force close it is still responding so I really don't know what is wrong.
    Can someone please help?

    Hi,
    Not normally my area (I followed a Link in iChat here).
    I can relate this to some issues with some cameras and iChat. Some will apply here possibly.
    iChat 2 was designed initially for a Firewire cameras that could output a DV signal.
    Obviously the External iSight was the choice but other Firewire able DV cameras - if - the output was DV could be seen by iChat.
    If the format for output ws for a TV/VCR (as in PAL or NTSC) then iChat could not "see" it.
    Later HDV Cameras are also a problem for iChat as the format size has to be in 4 X 4 ratio
    iMovie can "see" many more codecs/formats than iChat can although it doe have problem with mpeg2
    I Googled your Model number an got link to Samsung but then could not find it under CamCorders.
    Another Link provided me with the information it is a Stills camera.
    This says it records in H264 which iMovie should be able to Import.
    H264 can have Variants and you will need to know if iMovie can see this one.
    Movie Clip : H.264 (MPEG4.AVC)
    I have a Very old Analogue camera that I imported film from using a DV Converter.
    I had iMovie set at the time to use PAL for the Project format (I think it applies to the Playback)
    It is a long time since I did anything in iMovie.
    I hope this start you off on the right track.

  • 32 Bit Java Just Won't Work

    I need to install both 32 bit and 64 bit java on my computer to run a variety of different applications. 64 bit installed perfectly, but 32 bit just won't. I get the message:
    ERROR: Could not create java virtual machine.
    ERROR: A fatal exception occurred. The program will exit.
    What do I do to fix it?

    I'm having the same problem. I'm on a 1st Gen (June 2006) MacBook. I'm completely up to date on Software Update, but I can't get Java applets to display in any browser. I've checked Java Preferences, and I know that Java is installed on my computer. What gives?

  • Just won't work at all

    Last year I dropped and kicked my Ipod Mini. I went to this site and did everything it told me to do. It never worked. I really need an Ipod and I have been mad because it won't work. I plug it in to charge. Does not show up on Itunes or computer, and has the folder with . So I toggle with the hold switch and press menu and select at the same time. After several seconds the apple logo shows up and does not go away until the Ipod is dead again. *Please I really need help on this one.* Can i fix it? Do I have to buy a new on? Take it in to get it fixed? I really don't know.

    I would book an appointment for the Genius bar at the closest Apple Store. http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ . A genius can take a look a the ipod, and see if they're any thing they can do to get it working. If it is dead, they can offer you other solutions.

  • [CS3] this._root. or this._parent just won't work + retrieving a MC's y position.

    I've got some buttons which when i click them i want them to
    make a particular MC move downwards. Well the thing is that when i
    try to reference to that particular MC it just won't happen (yes
    the MC has an instance name). For the button i tried something like
    btn1.onRelease = function() {
    var mcReferece = this._root.myMC;
    trace(mcReference);
    or
    btn1.onRelease = function() {
    var mcReferece = this._parent.myMC;
    trace(mcReference);
    since they have the same parent.
    Both returned undefined.
    I've also tried putting directly myMC in the tween, with no
    effects whatsoever.
    The second question is, how can i retrieve the y position of
    a MC?
    Also i've tried putting the tween on the MC itself...
    onClipEvent(enterFrame){
    import mx.transitions.Tween;
    import mx.transitions.easing.*;
    var myTween:Tween = new Tween(_level0.myMC, "_y",
    Elastic.easeOut, 195, 545, 10, false);
    But not only does it not animate it doesn't even go where
    it's supposed to go...
    Thanks in advance.
    P.S. This might be rlly simple to solve but it's been bugging
    me and can't go on without it. Couldn't figure it myself. Got rlly
    annoyed at some point :|

    The only 7 i can think of that i have in the project is what
    comes after 6 (ridiculous i know... xD) :
    for (i=1; i<=6; i++) {
    var current_btn = this["btn"+i];
    current_btn.onRollOver = function() {
    var currentAlpha = this.cover_mc._alpha;
    var myHoriTween:Tween = new Tween(this.cover_mc, "_alpha",
    Strong.easeOut, currentAlpha, 0, 0.5, true);
    current_btn.onRollOut = function() {
    var currentAlpha = this.cover_mc._alpha;
    var myHoriTween:Tween = new Tween(this.cover_mc, "_alpha",
    Regular.easeIn, currentAlpha, 100, 0.5, true);
    but that's just the animation for the individual buttons.

  • ScrollToIndex just won't work ... any workarounds ?

    Hello,
    Any ideas why scrollToIndex won't work ? Tried it on a
    tilelist,
    datagrid, ... all without any result. Not even an error
    message !
    This works, as the last item is selected in the tilelist:
    tlProductsSearchResults.selectedIndex =
    tlProductsSearchResults.dataProvider.length - 1;
    But this one doesn't do a thing:
    tlProductsSearchResults.scrollToIndex(tlProductsSearchResults.dataProvider.lengt\
    h
    - 1);
    Best regards,
    Frank

    found a solution !
    Had to add "dg.validateNow();"

  • My Yahoo Toolbar is gone. I tried re-installing it several times but it just won't work.

    '''My Yahoo Toolbar has disappeared'. I tried re-installing it several times but it just won't appear in the Toolbar space. I looked in the Toolbar view and it is checked. I even tried unchecking and re-checking the Yahoo Toolbar view. No luck. Please help. I use that toolbar constantly.''

    Could be. They're in the midst of updating their servers at the moment so expect the odd mishap now and again.
    Oh, and could you click the "Solved" button so that it takes this thread out of the loop?
    Thanks.
