System Preferences Screen Saver Bug

I recently purchased a new iMac running Mountain Lion (previous computer was first gen intel Macbook Pro running Lion) and have noticed that a bug that persisted on my previous computer now exists on my new one!
Essentially, when I browse to the Screen Saver Tab in System Preferences, it says "There was a problem connecting to the server X" which was an old networked computer (which has never been mapped ever to my new iMac) and the prompt refuses to go away until I close system preferences.
I have restored my Pictures, Movies, Music using my previous time machine backup (no migration assistant used) and selecting the previous volume... but I don't know how that would cause the following? (See image):
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

FIXED IT!!!
Ok - so in case anybody else suffers this problem it turned out the iPhoto Library was referencing a folder of files on a (non existant) other computer. This explains why:
1. It always happened when I went into Wallpaper prefs (was looking for these non existent photos)
2. It didn't appear in Disk Utility (because it was within the iPhoto Library package itself (i.e. the database)
3. It happened on a new computer as the iPhoto library was restored from a previous computer.
In order to find this, I troubleshooted by moving the iPhoto Library to desktop (without opening it) and wall/screensaver prefs worked fine. Then, I used terminal and the grep command (screenshot attached) to find where it was referencing "kitch_n_stage" (I.e. the windows share). Then I moved those files to the trash, but the iPhoto library back and opened iPhoto. It had to rebuild the database as I removed the photos folder and the library.adpb file.
The command was grep -lr "name of shared computer" *
(Would suggest backing up your iphoto library before doing this)

  • System Preferences - screen saver... bug or feature?

    10.6.8 MBP
I have a folder which contain several sub folders - the contents of one sub-folder I use as screen saver.
In the System Preference pane for desktop /screen saver I can see the standard options of:
    iPhoto
    Flagged
    Last 12 Months
I don't use iPhoto & the library is empty & I've trashed the associated iPhoto.plist's - therefore when I click the "Flagged" & " Last 12 Months" of course as expected I see the message ' Your selected submissions have no pictures. You can change…. etc"
However if I select the iPhoto box - then the screensaver displays the contents of all the sub-level folders. When it should display the same 'Your subscriptions…' message.
    Why?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I have seen a lot of cases like your issue, and it's easy to solve.
First, open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair permissions. Sometimes, a permission can be damaged and it makes that an application doesn't work properly.
If that doesn't work, open Finder, select Go menu > Go to Folder, type ~/Library/Prefereces, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" and restart

  • OS X 10.9 System Preferences - Engery Saver UPS Configuration

There used to be an option for a UPS configuration under System Preferences - Engery Saver for previous versions of OS X.  Can this feature still be accessed for OS X 10.9, and if so, how and where?

Yes.  A UPS tab was not showing up on the System Preferences---> Energy Saver pane when the USB monitor cable from my APC UPS was plugged into a USB hub.  However, I have just discovered that the UPS tab does show up when the cable is plugged directly into the back of my iMac, so the USB hub must have been the problem.  Thanks anyway!

  • Can't get MAC to shut down and start up via the schedule button in system preferences energy saver. Is there another way?

Can't get MAC to shut down and start up via the schedule button in system preferences energy saver. Is there another way?

    Try this to start:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Preferences, Screen Saver - Not Responding

    Hey everyone,
I am having trouble with a computer that's not responding amongst other things. It started with iPhoto....when opened it would take forever to load and then basically couldn't do anything within it. I made a new library and opened it and everything seemed to be working fine in the empty library. I tried backing the old library up and it wouldn't let me. Then I was in System Preferences and tried opening the screen saver icon and it also freezes....then crashes. The finder is also acting a little strange. I looked around on the forum and found the thread about Stuffit and tried everything with that but still no success. Any ideas???

Here is what came up. Thanks!

  • System Preferences Energy Saver - Icon is screwy (see pic).  Any clues?

    Hello all,
I have a strange one here. Somehow I've ended up with a screwy Energy Saver icon in my System Preferences. I checked the package contents ( System/Library/PreferencePanes/EnergySaver.prefPane ), and the Resources/EnergySaver.icns file within is intact and looks fine. It seems like the SystemPreferences app has just decided not to resize it when displaying.
Here is a screen capture (click for full view):
Anyone seen anything like this before? And if so, any ideas on how to fix it? Everything seems to be working OK. Hopefully this isn't a sign of a bigger problem... I can't figure out what would have caused it.

Quit System Preferences if it is open, and choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter ~/Library/Caches/ as the folder's location, throw away the item named com.apple.preferencepanes.cache inside, and then restart System Preferences.

  • Error message in System Prefs Screen Saver/Desktop

: When I try to open Screen Saver or Desktop Prefs, I get "There was a problem connecting to the server 'iDisk.mac.com'". I have a new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion.  How can I change the prefs, and stop getting the annoying message that again pops up as soon as I click "OK"?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    grep -R idisk ~/L*/Preferences
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste (command-V) into the Terminal window.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.

  • Odd system prefs: screen saver behavior

I don't understand why, but it seems that now most of the albums in my screen saver pane do not load correctly. Some load with correct photos and photos from other albums. Others only read as having the same two photos. What is going on?

  • Dictionary Screen Saver Bug?

Hello all. I just got my first iMac and I love it. I think their might be a bug with the dictionary screen saver. When the screen saver comes on you can press D and the dictionary will open with the definition. I have to say that is a nice touch. I changed my account to ask for my password when I wake from the screen saver. At that point if I press "D" I expected to be prompted for my credentials and have the dictionary waiting for me open when I log on. It looks like the dictionary does not open when you resume after you put you password on. I can kind of understand why this is but I think the screen saver wording should be changed to not say press D to see he definition if it does not work when you have a password protected screen saver. Does anyone else have this problem?
Is there I place I can report it as a bug?
Thank you all for your help.

THANK YOU so much den.thed - that was exactly what was happening - and I took the recommended steps to "avoid" this scenario from occurring again - but it's an OBVIOUS BUG that Apple needs to address/fix!
This fix is kinda like telling someone "don't drive the defective car" as opposed to fixing the defect - ya know what I mean??
Thanks again.  People like you make this community work!

  • [little bug] System Preference: Desktop & Screensaver (bug in Spanish lang)

I don't know how report a bug in Mac OS X (10.5.3) for this reason I post in this forum.
If I set the language of the system to "Español" (Spanish) since 10.5.2 appear a visual bug in +System Preference+, exactly in *Desktop & Screensaver* with the right scrollbar. This bug doesn't appear if i switch the system language, example, to English.

P.S.: Apologys for my bad english. I hope this help to the devs.

You can provide bug or feedback information in several ways with Apple. For generic feedback you can use this:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
To comment on a product defect (a bug), the best way is to get an ADC membership to become part of Apple's developer community. You don't need to actually be a software developer to join ADC, and the online membership is free. See this information:
    http://developer.apple.com/products/
Once you have a membership, you can use
    http://bugreporter.apple.com/
to report bugs. You might want to review this information before reporting your bug:

  • System Preference Screen Blank

    Hi Folks,
I have been in the forums and tried all that I could find before I posted this...
My Old G-4, Mirror door, 1.25 running 10.5.8 has a strange problem. When I try and open my system preference...the box is blank. I can click on things by chance and they open? Also when I open Pages or any i-Works 9 ap the template screen is also blank but I can click and things will open. Everything else seems to run OK
I have deleted the plist several times and run disk utility also.
I have also reinstalled the OS and updated it and no luck...
Frustrated is too small of a word to use to describe this!

    Hi,
How full is the start up Drive in this Tower ?
I would start with a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD (or ⌘)+ALT PR Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

  • 4.2.1 Does Not Fix" Crash-on-screen saver" bug or metadata issues

ATV2 crashes as soon as it goes to screen saver. 4.2.1 does not fix this. WTC?
You have to set screen saver to "Never" to prevent crashing.
    No one checks these things?

    Metadata issues still hosed.
    Not seen the screensaver issue.
Personally I think this update was a patch to fix the DVI flickering issues that rendered the device unusable for many people - other annoyances can be fixed later but we better keep reminding them:

  • Leopard ate up my System Preference Screen

I installed Leopard, and it seems to be working fine except for one big problem. When I click "System Prefence" under Apple, nothing happens! Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it? Thank you for your help!

Restarting iBookG4 while holding SHIFT Key ended up losing Dreamweaver and another application. They disappeared!!! System Preference did not work. Since then, I used both Disk Warrior and Disk Utility at least twice each, but no change. So, I now not only have no System Preference window but also two lost applications. HELP!!!!

  • Screen saver bugs

I am using screen saver on Apple TV with files of photos from my MacBook Air. I have noticed that the screen saver will only show a fraction of the photos. It cycles through maybe 50 photos when the folders have hundreds or thousands of photos. It also continually cycles throught the same photos. I have tried resetting it and changing the folders on my mac. Nothing helps. Any suggestions?

I had THOUGHT I mentioned Photoshop's file browser, but re-reading I see I only mentioned the version that started having it available....sorry about that, glad you figured it out anyway.
An added wrinkle is that Image Capture can also read the metadata, and before Tiger it would automatically apply the rotation, which I found very helpful and saved a step in processing photos. However evidently graphic pros complained about this--"Some pixels may be hurt in the uploading of my photos!"--so instead of making this an option you can set yourself the Apple programmers simply changed the code and now Image Capture simply imports "as is" which I find annoying.
Also initially in Tiger the Finder handled these things rather oddly, displaying the thumbnails that showed the actual state of the pixels and ignoring the metadata on rotation, even though Finder understands it, but that got "fixed" so that the Finder thumbs now display according to the metadata. Of course, this just adds to the confusion since you know you shot in portrait, the Finder displays in portrait, as does Preview, but applications such as screensaver and browsers such as Safari (which don't read metadata) display the actual pixels. At least Photoshop does indicate the situation, once you know what to look for.
