Hi,

@teateawhy I tried your options (de and us) but both makes pretty the same results.
I tried also on my second machine (diffrent hardware, but VGA's in both case are from Intel (MSI Wind U100 and Toshiba Satellite PRO S500-150), but with the same list of packages, and the result are the same. So for me it is hardware independent.
Perhaps I am missing some packages?

  • Slow systemd-vconsole-setup service at boot (apparently)

    Hello,
I am trying to understand the timing of my boot sequence, particularly the systemd part. I have the feeling that systemd-vconsole-setup.service is taking quite a long time for what it is supposed to do, since I get
    systemd-analyze blame | head
    3.744s systemd-vconsole-setup.service
    1.871s accounts-daemon.service
    1.425s systemd-logind.service
    1.357s alsa-restore.service
    1.356s dhcpcd.service
    1.256s polkit.service
    983ms systemd-binfmt.service
    952ms NetworkManager.service
    832ms systemd-remount-fs.service
    762ms gdm.service
I know that this time may not be a true indicator, so I have modify my systemd-vconsole-setup.service to prefix the command with a "strace" and redirect the output to a file (as indicated there), and here it seems that the process takes at least 1.5s (the output itself is a huge file). However, I could not follow the suggestion any further since we do not have the same output (presumably due to the fact that those are not the same distros).
Could anyone give me an advice to know a little bit more about this service and why it takes that time? Actually, it's more about knowing how the things work rather than optimizing at all cost my boot time.
    Thanks!
    Guillaume

  • Systemd and systemd-logind crash due to failed assertion

    Hi,
my system is currently only semi-usable because systemd *and* systemd-logind seem to be aborting due to a failed assertion. All systemd- and socket-related programs do not work. There are many zombie processes. These problems started after a reboot. (To be precise, the system hung up probably because of some graphics driver/mesa-related bug and I pushed the reset button.)
I previously had testing and community-testing enabled, but disabling them did not fix the issue. Also, I was running a custom 3.17 kernel before the reboot but the normal 3.16.4, the testing 3.17.1 and the linux-ck-ivybridge 3.16.6 (from repo-ck) kernels also don't work.
/usr is not on a seperate partition.
One bug should have been fixed upstream (here) and the other "disappeared" (there).
Pacman logs are cluttered with my attempts to fix the problem by reinstalling some packages (systemd, dbus, linux) so I didn't include them, but nothing important was upgraded right before the problem appeared.
The relevant log lines in short:
    systemd[1]: Assertion 'a >= 0 && a < _JOB_TYPE_MAX_MERGING' failed at src/core/job.c:314, function job_type_lookup_merge(). Aborting.

I worked around the issue myself by manually commenting the offending assertions out in src/core/job.c, so this is an upstream bug. I will report it at the systemd bug tracker.

You make an appointment at the genius bar of your local Apple Store and get it serviced/replaced. You broke it. If you can't even force a reboot, there's nothing much more you can do.

  • My lap top is extremly slow. It studders. It kind of sounds like there is a fan inside and it constantly stopping and starting. And, it takes a really long time for it too start up. Whats wrong with it?

    Do you have current backups?
Those symptoms could indicate a failing Hard drive. If it dies, all your documents go with it unless you have Backups.
I have had very good luck with physical and battery problem diagnosis at the Genius Bar. Those guys put their hands (and their ears) to these machines, all day every day, and they know immediately what all those sounds mean.

  • [SOLVED] systemd-tmpfiles-clean takes a very long time to run

I've been having an issue for a while with systemd-tmpfiles-clean.service taking a very long time to run. I've tried to just ignore it, but it's really bothering me now.
    Measuring by running:
    # time systemd-tmpfiles --clean
    systemd-tmpfiles --clean 11.63s user 110.37s system 10% cpu 19:00.67 total
I don't seem to have anything funky in any tmpfiles.d:
    # ls /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/* /run/tmpfiles.d/* /etc/tmpfiles.d/* | pacman -Qo -
ls: cannot access /etc/tmpfiles.d/*: No such file or directory

How do I debug why it is taking so long? I've looked in man 8 systemd-tmpfiles and on google, hoping to find some sort of --dubug option, but there seems to be none.
Is it some how possible to get a list of the directories that it looks at when it runs?
Anyone have any suggestions on how else to fix this.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    Thanks,
    Gary

Thank you very much falconindy. SYSTEMD_LOG_LEVEL=debug helped my find my issue.
The cause of the problem was thousands of directories in /var/tmp/ created by a test suite with a broken clean up method. systemd-tmpfiles-clean was recursing through these, but not deleting them.

  • Ebay states "This Connection Is Untrusted" and has done for a long time - please help me use ebay again!

For a long time now, every time I've tried to log in to ebay (I can get into ebay, but I cannot log into my account, etc) or Paypal (I cannot even access this site), I get an error message stating that "the connection is untrusted" "You have asked Firefox to connect securely to signin.ebay.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure".- I've tried the standard solution i.e. resetting the time and date on my computer, but still this does not work.
Please help as this is severely restricting the use on my computer - and it's frustrating as hell!
    Many thanks

Try to rename the cert8.db file in the Firefox profile folder to cert8.db.old or delete the cert8.db file to remove intermediate certificates that Firefox has stored.
If that helped to solve the problem then you can remove the renamed cert8.db.old file.<br />
Otherwise you can rename (or copy) the cert8.db.old file to cert8.db to restore the previous intermediate certificates.<br />
Firefox will automatically store intermediate certificates when you visit websites that send such a certificate.
If that didn't help then remove or rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old) as well.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • When I connect my new Ipod to the computer it freezes and I must wait a long time. What should I do?

My Ipod freezes when I connect it to the laptop. Then I cannot do anything with it for a long time. Can you help me with this?

Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for Manual Test, then select IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine taken when my 6th Generation Classic was about 2 years old:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press SELECT & MENU for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    Reallocated Sectors Count
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    Pending sector count
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • Erasing All Contents and Settings is taking a long time, showing circle loading logo.. is this normal?

I decided to first "restore" my phone in the itunes store and then i  "Erase(d) All Contents and Settings". Its been taking longer then a couple hours and it is not showing the apple logo is is showing the circle loading screen. Is this normal? Please help!

Try a normal reset; just turn your phone off and then on again:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Then connect it to your computer (with iTunes already running) via the USB cable.
Give it a few seconds, then look for your phone's icon in the left-hand column of the iTunes window. Click on it once.
In the right-hand (large) column of the iTunes window, look for RESTORE TO FACTORY SETTING. Click on that and let it happen; it will take a few minutes.
Do not bother with the Erase All command from your iPhone's Settings app - unless you have a significant security concern, it is not necessary to do that.

  • I purchased os x lion and it is taking a long time to download whats up

I purchased os x lion and it is taking forever to download ?

How big is "rather large" to you??  If you don't like non-specifity by others, don't do the same yourself.
If Apple listed the filesize of the download or something meaningful, we could all determine how long is reasonable for our internet connections, which we know despite the lack of capabilities from Apple in helping that regard as well!

  • I reset my ipod and it took an unsualy long time to turn on. I checked it the next morning and there was a picture of the charger with an arrow pointing to the itunes symbol. what does this mean?

I tried plugging it into my laptop and it wasnt syncing. so im not sure what to do now.

    - Try a reset and then connect to computer and restore if you can.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - If the screen still shows something, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try the reset and restoe again.

  • Erasing All Contents and Settings is taking a long time showing circle loading logo

So, I was trying to erase my phone (iPhone 4) because I'm suppose to sell it tomorrow since I have an iPhone 5 and no longer need a 4...  so I tried the "easiest" way with Erasing All Contests from the phone but it's been 3 hours and the circle is still there.
Now I've read other places where it says what to do, but my problem is the following my power button does not work at all.  So I can't press Power and Home because it isn't going to do anything.  Should I wait to see if the circle stops? Should I wait to see if the battery dies? is there any way at all to turn it off and try again?

iPhone 4 uses hareware encryption and doesn't require overwriting - should take only a few minutes.  The fact that yours is going for hours suggests the phone was hacked/jailbroken.

  • Photoshop says "Rendering Type" and loads for a very long time, how do I fix this? I'm new to Photoshop and I was trying to learn how to make a watermark. This happens once I press the "Text" tool. I'm using a Mac with OS X. Please help, thank you.

Photoshop says "Rendering Type" under a "Progress" Bar that shows up. I'm trying to create a watermark and this happens when I press the "Text" tool. Please help, I'm new to Photoshop. Thank you.

So you created a document 192000 pixels wide, and 108000 tall, and  set the type to be 2 inches tall.  Yes, the type is going to take a few minutes to render in that document.
Yes, you created a document much bigger than you probably intended (you probably wanted 1920 PIXELS by 1080 PIXELS).
Pixels and inches are not the same, and you need to pay attention to the units.
