Systemd or Bumblebee problem?

Hi everyone,
Archlinux is newly installed in a thinkpad Edge E430 with Optimus technology, so I follow the instructions to install Bumblebee and related packages to make use of Nvidia display card.  At the beginning it runs smoothly but, started from yesterday, the bumblebeed.service does not start automatically at boot, no matter how many times I try "systemctl disable|enable|reenable bumblebeed.service", bumblebee service is still not started after every boot.
However, optirun command still can work after manually typing "systemctl start bumblebeed.service".  In such case I cannot address the problem if it is on bumblebee or systemd, has anyone met such similar case or got any ideas to fix it?
Linux 3.7.4-1-pae (I have to run some 32bit software)
bumblebee 3.0.1-4
dkms-nvidia-bumblebee-utils 313.18-1
bbswitch 0.5-2
xf86-video-intel-2.20.19-1
systemd-197-4

Thank you so much for help!
Yes, some errors message about mouse appear (but my mouse, touchpad and trackpoint work without problem), I have no idea how to fix it, I am just a normal user.  The followings are the output:

    Any help appreciated

    So I logged out, logged in, installed mesa-demos package to get glxgears and now it works.
    Optirun glxgears runs the application using the discrete card and then it switches back over to the integrated card when I close it.
    I still have the above indications if I run the modprobe, insmod and lspci commands that I posted above.

  • Set up systemd with bumblebee. Now Xorg loads nvidia module.

    I have the nvidia module blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf.
    I have bbswitch set to turn the card off when it loads up using "options bbswitch load_state=0 unload_state=0" in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf.
    I have confirmed that the bbswitch module believes these configuration options are set, and I know that the card is successfully turned off when Bumblebee loads up.
    But when I load into my login manager (SLiM), the card gets powered on and the module is loaded up. I don't think bbswitch is involved.
    Is there any way to trace exactly which process loads a module?
    Is there something simple I'm missing?

    Thanks for the heads up! But that introduces the problem that I won't be set up for DKMS. Seems like a lose-lose situation with how often Arch updates the kernel. My cheap hack works for now. When I get a chance I may try to get the best of both worlds and build a dkms-nvidia-bumblebee of my own.

    I have actually had a success message among one of the  error messages, which was:
    Can't open display(null)
    And meant that everything is in order but I just did not have X started.
    I interpreted that incorrectly and tried to further fiddle with display configuration.
    Marking as Solved.

    Thanks! Read that article several times, but didn't notice that NOTE.
    Note: /etc/profile.d/locale.sh from systemd-sysvcompat or initscripts is necessary to be able to set users' locale correctly
    But why doesn't it have it's own locale.sh file?
    Why should one need to pull it from other package?

  • Trying to get google-chrome to run with webgl under bumblebee

    I have bumblebee working correctly, with both 32-bit and 64-bit applications (as far as I can tell simple proof below):
    ➜ ~ optirun glxspheres32
    Polygons in scene: 62464
    Visual ID of window: 0x20
    Context is Direct
    OpenGL Renderer: GeForce GTX 765M/PCIe/SSE2
    224.115844 frames/sec - 250.113282 Mpixels/sec
    ➜ ~ optirun glxspheres64
    Polygons in scene: 62464
    Visual ID of window: 0x20
    Context is Direct
    OpenGL Renderer: GeForce GTX 765M/PCIe/SSE2
    217.961129 frames/sec - 243.244620 Mpixels/sec
    I am trying to use it to run webgl on google-chrome (and thus run google-chrome with nvidia)
    When I try to run google-chrome with optirun I get:
    ➜ ~ optirun google-chrome-stable
    ERROR: ld.so: object 'libdlfaker.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.
    ERROR: ld.so: object 'librrfaker.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.
    Created new window in existing browser session.
    and even with checking that the flags are set correctly in google chrome (in chrome://flags disable-webgl is disabled and Override software rendering list, or #ignore-gpu-blacklist is enabled) this doesn't work.
    Now reading on the wiki page it directs me to a note in the installation section (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/bu … stallation) that reminds me to install a package which I have installed (and I assume that if that were the problem glxspheres32 would give the same error?) and so I don't know how to debug this.
    Any suggestions and ideas would be greatly appreciated
    If it's helpful here is a pastebin of the output for journalctl -f (http://pastebin.com/6RgaJcuu) and here's some info I think might be helpful/relevant:

    I used the following the last time (months ago) I tried running it with optirun:
    optirun google-chrome-unstable --enable-webgl --ignore-gpu-blacklist
    Note: I am using Chrome-Dev from the AUR, but I don't know that it matters.

  • Bumblebee daemon reported: error - ASUS UX303LN,bumblebee,geforce 840m

    Hello. I am trying to get bumblebee up and running but there seems to be an issue. This is what i've done:
    sudo pacman -S bumblebee mesa xf86-video-intel nvidia lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-mesa-libgl
    gpasswd -a $USER bumblebee
    sudo systemctl enable bumblebeed
    reboot
    But when i try to test it out i get the output:
    primusrun glxspheres64
    primus: fatal: Bumblebee daemon reported: error: [XORG] (EE) systemd-logind: failed to get session: PID 635 does not belong to any known session
    So i whent onto the wiki and found this: (and also installed bbswitch)
    systemd-logind: failed to get session: PID XXX does not belong to any known session
    If the console output is (PID varies):
    [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: [XORG] (EE) systemd-logind: failed to get session: PID 753 does not belong to any known session
    [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled.
    In /etc/mkinitcpio.conf change the MODULES var to:
    MODULES="i915 bbswitch"
    Or:
    MODULES="i915 nouveau bbswitch"
    And run:
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
    mkinitcpio ran fine with no errors. After i rebooted i got promoted with the same error. Can anyone give me a hint on if im missing someting?

    So which kernel are you trying to run bumblebee on?
    If you  try to run it on v4 you probably need to compile the nvidia modules against this version.
    What does
    systemctl status bumblebeed
    give you right after reboot?
    I always use v4 and have been used when i installed the drivers. Anything i need to do?

  • Bumblebee not working

    Pages read:

    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1178729
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=159666
    And many other threads too old and different to be useful.
    My system:
    $ uname -a
    Linux biscottyno 3.15.7-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jul 28 20:06:17 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux

    lib32-nvidia-utils 340.32-1
    lib32-intel-dri 10.2.6-1
    bbswitch 0.8-15
    Kernel version is not matching in uname and pacman, as well in:
    $ ls -a /lib/modules
    . 3.15.7-1-ARCH extramodules-3.15-ARCH
    .. 3.16.1-1-ARCH extramodules-3.16-ARCH
    I think I have to update GRUB from the debian partition. I'll check now.
    I installed bumblebee with:
    sudo pacman -S intel-dri xf86-video-intel bumblebee nvidia lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-intel-dri
    Anyway wiki doesn't suggest to install bbswitch, which I think is essential, so I've installed it as well.
    I've configured bumblebee:
    $ cat /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf

    Configuration done, now I try bumblebee with glxgears:

    I've read that specifying nVIDIA BusID helps, so I've done without success:
    $ cat /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Layout0"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
    Option "AutoAddGPU" "false"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "DiscreteNvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BusID "PCI:01:00:00"
    # If the X server does not automatically detect your VGA device,
    # you can manually set it here.
    # To get the BusID prop, run `lspci | egrep 'VGA|3D'` and input the data
    # as you see in the commented example.
    # This Setting may be needed in some platforms with more than one
    # nvidia card, which may confuse the proprietary driver (e.g.,
    # trying to take ownership of the wrong device). Also needed on Ubuntu 13.04.
    # BusID "PCI:01:00:0"
    # Setting ProbeAllGpus to false prevents the new proprietary driver
    # instance spawned to try to control the integrated graphics card,
    # which is already being managed outside bumblebee.
    # This option doesn't hurt and it is required on platforms running
    # more than one nvidia graphics card with the proprietary driver.
    # (E.g. Macbook Pro pre-2010 with nVidia 9400M + 9600M GT).
    # If this option is not set, the new Xorg may blacken the screen and
    # render it unusable (unless you have some way to run killall Xorg).
    Option "ProbeAllGpus" "false"
    Option "NoLogo" "true"
    Option "UseEDID" "false"
    Option "UseDisplayDevice" "none"
    EndSection
    Manually loading bbswitch or nvidia does not work:
    $ sudo modprobe bbswitch
    modprobe: FATAL: Module bbswitch not found.
    $ sudo modprobe nvidia
    modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found.
    Of course nouveau module is blacklisted.
    I have no clue on what to do.

  • Bumblebeed requires restart every time to work properly

    Hello all,
    I am having an awkward issue with bumblebee. Often it refuses to run due to the following error (systemctl status bumblebeed):
    bumblebeed.service - Bumblebee C Daemon
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/bumblebeed.service; enabled)
    Active: active (running) since mer 2013-11-13 07:15:15 CET; 36min ago
    Main PID: 409 (bumblebeed)
    CGroup: /system.slice/bumblebeed.service

    nov 13 07:51:47 StefaX bumblebeed[409]: [ 2211.424729] [ERROR]Could not load GPU driver
    The odd thing is that if I restart bumblebee, it usually works perfectly. Then I exit the game and, if I start it again, bumblebeed fails again and I have to restart it again.
    In dmesg I see:
    [ 2198.880234] bbswitch: enabling discrete graphics
    [ 2199.285757] pci 0000:01:00.0: power state changed by ACPI to D0
    So apparently it does its stuff properly by turning the discrete card on... it just cannot load the driver for some reason.
    This is the output of journalctl -u bumblebeed:

    I tried with nouveau but I am not that happy with the 3D quality it provides overall. This is an excerpt from journalctl _TRANSPORT=kernel:

    It looks like that it does not even TRY to load the module when it fails, but I could be wrong I have no clue on where to look for further information.
    I am using kernel 3.11.6-1-ARCH with official nvidia driver on an Asus X53S (there are two, I have the one with i7) with NVidia 610M.
    Anybody has a hint?
    Thanks in advance!
    Stefano

    OK--then you likely have a different graphics chip. But you could still have an intermittently malfunctioning graphics chip.
    Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test?
    Do you get the same graphics artifact on an external display? If so, it would tend to imply a graphics chip problem. If you have good video on an external display, the problem is more likely to be with the internal display or its connections.
    And if Apple's repair did not resolve the issue, you may have some recourse with them, depending on how long ago you had the repair done and how long their warranty is on it.
    Even though this sounds like a hardware problem to me, it may also be worth reinstalling the OS, just to eliminate the possibility of a software cause.
    Good luck!

  • Tip regarding the "systemd[1]: Failed to start Journal Service" error

    Just a tip regarding the well-known
    systemd[1]: Failed to start Journal Service
    error (which I ran into last weekend) to maybe save one or two among you a couple of hours of your time:
    The error is described here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151012 as well as in several other threads in other language boards / in other forums etc. It is usually (as in the linked thread) 'solved' by reinstalling the system - good old Windows magic, also useful when dealing with systemd.
    The Problem with this error is that you do not get into your system. Instead, systemd will print you the mentioned "Failed to start Journal Service" error message a couple of million times. There are also no logs that you could retrieve (when booting from a livesystem) and that would give you any helpful hints, since journal is systemd's logging service, old-style system logs are not kept, and the dmesg log doesn't survive the reboot with default settings.
    As pointed out in the above mentioned thread, you will see a few more instructive error messages when adding 'emergency' to the kernel line in the bootloader config.
    Now there may be plenty of reasons why the systemd journal service might not work. The most common and most annoying, however, appears to be this one:
    In this case you will see that the problem actually lies in
    systemd[1]: Cannot open /etc/machine-id: No such file or directory
    Now, 'man machine-id' reveals that "the /etc/machine-id file contains the unique machine id of the local system that is set during installation. (...) The machine ID is usually generated from a random source (...)". It is obviously perfectly justified to refuse to boot the system because an absolutely insignificant random number is missing. As far as systemd is concerned anyway.
    Usually, it seems, the /etc/machine-id is set by /usr/bin/systemd-machine-id-setup during installation or system upgrade. It is not documented anywhere that this is a rather important step and that you should better check if this was or was not actually done before rebooting. Obviously (but for no apparent reasons) systemd fails to run this (or to run this successfully) sometimes.
    Also to be recommended: Always retain (back up) your old kernel and initramfs and edit your bootloader config appropriately to be able to boot with your old kernel again ... just to have one or two options left to get back into the system in case of running into an unpleasant surprise from the side of systemd or other packages.
    The solution is, obviously, to create this file /etc/machine-id ... You probably want to do that from a livesystem (if you want to try it from the emergency shell, you would need to remount / (i.e. root) as rw and hope that systemd will not punish you for that) by just running the program that was designed for creating this file manually:  /usr/bin/systemd-machine-id-setup
    http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.s … devel/7528 states that it might also work with merely creating the file 'touch /etc/machine-id'. Though I didn't try that since I had enough fun with systemd for one week and didn't want to break my system again just to see if that works.

    Jristz wrote:
    ackalker wrote:Sorry for necrobumping this.
    Generating the machine-id in a consistent way is very important when working with KVM and containers, where the machine-id can be set for the VM or container. See `man systemd-machine-id-setup`.
    Again, _don't_ just put some random UUID in there, especially not in the systemd package install script, this makes provisioning Arch Linux containers a PITA.
    If you thing that the way that arch is handlynbg the machine-id is wrong or can be improved, then file a bug.
    He already did.
    Jristz wrote:Anyway, I thing if reinstalling systemd package or if systemd have a command to reinitialize the machine-id file.
    Like so many of your posts, I had to read this a half dozen times before it made any sense. I think you're hinting at the utility that ackalker already pointed out in the post you're replying to. And, if you read the install scriptlet, you wouldn't need to think about whether or not reinstalling would be an option. You would know that it isn't.

  • Archlinux is moving to systemd

    Hello!
    As far as I know Archlinux is moving now to systemd. Personally I fine with systemd, because I'm using it already. I'm also fine with SysVinit. I use systemd, because a dev told me that the move will likely happen in future and I had to install Archlinux some days ago on my new laptop.
    Please but this and similar informations in the "latest news area" of archlinux.org, so everyone know what will happend and can prepare for this (e.g. reading in the wiki about systemd or even migrating immediately to systemd, preparing for problems with self written scritps and so on). This way of communication is really important for the community and developers
    I know some that companys think Facebook, Google+ or Twitter are a way to communicate with their customers, especially because their own website are overloaded with unrelated marketing buzzwords and badly structured. We shouldn't follow this way. We have a well structured website for this! Personally I think a Official Google+ Account is an euphemism

    Question:
    Did somebody informed phoronix about this? Phoronix itself is not the "most trustworthy source on the web", but wrong news are still wrong.
    Also the "officiall" wasn't removed on the G+ page till now?
    Well, I created that page on January and since then _we_ (managers' page: me,
    Ionut, Ray, s, Daniel) never write something which wasn't announced by our
    website. Until today.
    I don't know who write that (neither I wanna know), but you pointed out
    something true, so I already removed the "official" suffix from our page and
    "fixed" the post about systemd. I hope this is ok now.

  • Systemd doesn't umount (encrypted) /home and /tmp on shutdown

    Hi all,
    as this is my first post in this BBS, I hope I'm actually posting in the correct forum. I also did some research but couldn't really find answers.
    I have a problem with systemd on shutdown. It doesn't unmount my encrypted home partition (and does not close the LUKS partition) and the /tmp partition. The corresponding output from journalctl would be this:

    Now, with the usual sysv-init this wouldn't be a problem but with systemd (which I'm new to) this poses a problem. I don't know where to start debugging this issue, really. I haven't found a way to run a script directly before and after the umount.target units starts so I can't really see which files are open or what the problem is at this point.
    Is it possible to drop to a shell on such errors and inspect the problem manually? Or does anyone have a suggestion why systemd doesn't want to unmount these filesystems?
    Here's my /etc/fstab:
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/mapper/root LABEL=ROOT
    UUID=27fed041-7765-4f63-a895-a7592113165b / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered,discard 0 1
    # /dev/mapper/home LABEL=HOME

    # /dev/sdb1

    UUID=dffd1518-d3b5-4d05-8b13-76e6fd841963 /data ext4 defaults 0 2
    and my /etc/crypttab:
    # <name> <device> <password> <options>
    home UUID=01f3da5d-1ca0-4bf2-b5a1-cfe69c597707 /etc/keys/home.key luks,discard
    If you need more information, please do tell! Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    gegenschall

    I think the /home part of the issue for me is at least partially due to how I have mpd configured.  I start it with my X session and it persists after I log out, keeping a few files in my home folder open.  If I make sure it is not running, log out to LightDM, and use its menu to reboot, I do not get a journal message about /home.  If I kill mpd, but instead issue a `systemctl reboot/poweroff` command from a terminal in X, the problem returns.  Is this normal?  I guess I expected everything to be automatically cleaned up.
    /tmp, on the other hand, remains a mystery.  If I remove it from my /etc/fstab - to use the default tmp.mount (tmpfs) systemd provides - the problem goes away.  But if I keep it as is, and do something silly like replace /bin/umount with this:
    #!/bin/sh
    /bin/test "$1" = "/tmp" && /bin/date -Ins >> /umount-tmp.log
    /bin/test "$1" = "/tmp" && /bin/lsof /tmp >> /umount-tmp.log
    /bin/umount.real "$@"
    all I get is a list of times.
    Also, I tried following the steps here (Shutdown Completes Eventually), but the output mostly mirrors what I get from journalctl:
