T 61 - Hard Drive problem after attempt to restore laptop to ex-factory situation

Hi all
I have a T61 Type 7664-17U from 07/10 bought at a charity auction. It came with all the disks to reset to ex-factory  situation. Worked nicely for almost a year the sound indicating that there was no drivers for it. Went to Lenovo site, got the correct driver and tried to install it.
A message came that only part of the request was executed, still no sound and no driver. I log off to sign up as administrator as it could be lack of "authority" so to speak, just to discover that the person that bought it for me and installed some software he had allowed himself to set up a password for "administrator".
No other passwords exist anywhere.
Because the T61 came with lots of software that I do not use and that were just slowing it down, and also because it came from other "hands" and including for security reasons I decided that it was time, to clean the entire hard drive to ex-factory situation.
Used all the disks and everything went well until after all the disks were run and inserted the "Supplemental Disk" in the end a message came up.
No AOD file found
After auto restart was made I was instructed:
"Click next to begin Recovery Process"
then
"Preparing Hard Drive"
The laptop freezed for about 3 or 4 seconds and proceeded again on its own but the hard drive was not formatted, simply no time for it.
New auto-restart
Then a message.
"No Hard Drive Present"
Now, on a 160 GB Disk, I can only see a single partition of about 6 (six) gigabytes named SERVICE 0001
Couldn't find a way around this problem.
Can anyone help me and tell me what might have happened and how to solve this problem ?
Buying another disk is simply not an option at this time.

Hello,
Have you tried erasing or wiping the disk using whatever tool the hard disk drive manufacturer provides, and then performing a clean install from the recovery media?  If so, what effect did that have?

  • USB Hard drive problems after sleep/computer inactivity

    Hi
I am the proud owner of a 2009 iMac after making the plunge and switching from my PC.
I am using my old Freecom 3.5" Classic 1TB external USB hard drive for extra storage and have reformatted one of the partitions to Mac OS extended (journaled) for use with time machine. i have left the other partitions in NTFS mode because I occasionally dual boot into windows. I have noticed that when I put the iMac to sleep and reactivate it or leave it unattended for a while the external drive powers down and cannot be recognised without switching it on off & on again. Sometimes the drive icons disappear from my desktop and other times they remain but without any icons inside the finder window when I open them. I also get the warning messages about not ejecting the drives properly and am worried I corrupt the data on them.
I have done a quick bit of research and have found that other people have described this problem with various brands of USB drives, however I can't find a definitive answer!
Does anyone have one? Your help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

I have the same exact problem... I know other people have the same issue; I've done research on the internet and we're not alone. Just no response from Apple or suggestions from anyone else. I find myself just mounting the disk as needed to eliminate the possibility of losing any data. I then use disk utility to remount when needed as opposed to shutting the drive down.

  • External hard drive problem after time machine [help!]

    Hi there! Please help me.
Last week, I partition a 320 G Samsung external hard drive into a 300G volume (format: Mac OS extended (journaled)) for Time Machine, and other 20G NTFS for data exchange between Mac and Windows. At the same time, I stored 40G IMPORTANT data in the 300G volume.
However, I plugged in the drive. My MBP MC374 managed to mount the 20G NTFS while the 300G is missing!
I opened up Disk Utility, it shows:
Please help! The data matters a lot to me!!

Specifically you screen shot does not show anything.
    Ciao.

  • External hard drive problems after latest updates

I just did some updates (listed below) and now my external drive is having a few problems.
    Updates installed:
    - Security update 2015 002
    - Remote Desktop Client Update 3.8.2 ver 1.1
    - iTunes 12.1
    - Canon Inkjet Printer Software 3.2
    Problems:
    - Double clicking on any file type leads to a 'can't find application' error, rather than it opening in the default program (i have tried it with several different file types)
    - Can no long click option + drag to copy. I get error code -8058
Any idea which update might be causing this? I'm thinking security or remove desktop client? If so, is there any way to remove the update? I've searched and can't find how.

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

is there any way to remove the update? I've searched and can't find how.
Restore from a backup before the updates were applied.

  • Big hard drive problem after 10.8.5 supplemental update

Hello, I just tried installing the 10.8.5 supplemental update, but now I can't restart my iMac at all. It keeps trying to reinstall the update, and then shuts down. I can restart from the recovery HD, but I can't reinstall the previous software as it says that both of my disks are locked, the main HD and the recovery HD. I tried disk repair, but it says the main HD can't be repaired. Is there any way to unlock the disks? Any other options? Thanks.

You will have to do internet recovery OS X: About OS X Recovery
or Mountain Lion Recovery disk assistant  OS X Recovery Disk Assistant v1.0
If you have a third party utility like disk warrior or techtool  DiskWarrior 4 - The Disk Utility for Mac Disk Repair, Mac Directory Repair, Mac Disk Recovery, Mac Data Recovery or Techtool Pro 7
they might be able to fix your drive, but this is unlikely.
If you can get the drive repaired and you are still game for the update, I'd use the combo installer instead. A lot of people have had problems with the supplemental installer. I just used the combo installer the other day for a problem I was having with iTunes, worked like a charm. OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo)
If the recovery partition will let you, you might have to erase the drive and reinstall ML and reinstall your documents from backups, which I hope you have.
If it won't let you, and DW or TT or Disk Utility won't fix or erase your drive, then the drive has probably failed, and you'll have to replace it.

  • Hard drive locked after time machine restore

Hi guys, I encountered a huge problem while restoring my time machine backup onto my new MabBook Pro. I was running OSX 10.10, the machine is brand new out of the box. I tried to restore my time machine backup onto the new machine, everything was working normally until I was prompted for the admin password to unlock the fire vault and that was the end of it. I received a message saying that there was a problem erasing the destination drive. Now when I boot the computer it goes straight to OSX Utilities. If I go to the disk utility, I can see Macintosh HD but I have no access to it. I can't erase it nor reinstall OSX. Has someone had this same issue? If so, what can I do to format the drive again?
    Thanks a lot!
    Andres

    Thanks for the reply guys.
Unfortunately none of what you said was helpful ds store. **** of a lot of effort and risk to go through just to get the drive unlocked. It might work though.
baltwo, thanks for the link. Those computer lingo sentances scare me big time. I'm a photographer, not some IT junkie! Thanks for the link as that got me reading some other posts and I then came accross other variations of " a+rx" that work for some but not for others. Sounded a bid dubios to me, especially since I'll have absolutely no clue as to what to do if things do go pear shape.
Nevertheless, I found the best sullution: a small app called BatChmod. (http://www.lagentesoft.com/)

  • Restoring iTunes files after hard drive problems

    HI.
I recently had hard drive problems and since the recovery of the data I have lost all my files from iTunes. The sogs I have put on to the Mac via CD's are all still there but all the iTunes downloads have disapeared. This is probably because I didn't back up!
I also have numerous duplications, which I eventually removed from itunes but I know the majority of which will return if I drag my music folder across.
This will be a hige taks again to remove the duplications.
I want to use this unfortunate incident to my advantage though and now have a clear out of my unwanted files and keep my iTunes nicely organised.
I also lost my playlists, which is a major pain.
By looking at the support threads it seems that I can use my ipod to put my library back as it should be. Will this also replace my downloaded songs? My other issue is that some of my iTunes downloads, downloaded with some problems, which are obviously on my ipod. How do I go about getting the songs repaired?
    Thanks for any help.

I imagine if the files exist on the ipod you can get them transferred over. if they don't exist, they are gone.
As for the corrupt files you would need to provide more information on the issues.

  • Optical drive problems after upgrade to Tiger 10.4.10

I've just had my machine updated to Tiger 10.4.10 after having two new hard drives installed after a hard drive failure. I'm now having issues with burning data for backup purposes.
I can't burn anything with Mac OS Disc Burner utility, it doesn't seem to recognize blank disc's DVD's or CD's. It keeps telling me to load a disc when one is already in the drive.
System profiler recognizes CD-R's & DVD-R's when they are in the optical drive
I can burn with Toast Titanium ver 6.0.3 DVD's & CD's. The burned CD's will mount. The burned DVD's will not mount.
I have checked the burned DVD's in the optical drive of my iBook G4 Mac OS 10.3.9 and they mount on it fine.
Movie DVD's will mount & play. Software DVD's will mount and load applications.
I have cleaned the drive with a cleaning disc.
The Optical Drive was working fine before the upgrade, so what is the problem?
I can only assume two problems now!
1.) the optical drive has a physical malfunction
2.) there is a software issue between Tiger 10.4.10 & this optical drive (this is my favorite at the moment)
The upgrade was done by an Apple Authorised Service Provider they say there are no issues with Tiger & the optical drive.
So any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem. I bought my G5 with Panther OS on it a few years ago. The DVD drive functioned perfectly back then. Then I upgraded to Tiger this past year which caused the DVD drive to open later..that is, I'd have to hold down the eject button for a good 2 or 3 seconds before it would open or close. Previously it responded instantly. Now what happens more and more is it can't read DVD-ROM disks that it has burned. My imac G4 with Jaguar has no trouble reading the disks but Tiger 10.4.9 and 10.4.10 simply refuse to mount DVD ROM disks that it burned.
I'm trying to make a duplicate DVD of the offending disk on my single-processor G4 and then put THAT disk into the G5 so it can read the info. Hopefully that will be my work-around.
It's got to be a software issue and I keep hoping the Apple wiz kids will put out an update to remedy this. Something's fishy with the DVD drive programming.

  • Recurring hard drive problems in MacBook Pro.

    Hi all,
This will be a fairly long post, so I apologize beforehand. I feel as though I should share as much information as possible in order to try to nail down this problem as best as I can. So, here we go...
About 6 years ago I purchased a 15" MacBook Pro. I had been using it just about nonstop for about 5 years, only closing the lid when I transport it, even in 3 hour car rides, and had no problems. I was using snow leopard for the duration of those 5 years. In August of 2012 I decided to take a year of study in Denmark so I could spend time in Europe. I wanted to make sure I was set for the year, so when mountain lion released, I purchased it and upgraded from snow leopard to mountain lion while skipping lion altogether. I also purchased a charger consistent with European outlets and power supply upon arrival. I used the computer just fine between the time I upgraded in early August until about the middle of October when the dreaded grey startup screen appeared with the folder and the flashing "?". I took the computer to the premium, certified Apple reseller in Copenhagen to have them look at it. i ended up paying to have the hard drive replaced because I was out of my warranty period. They fixed the computer and everything seemed to work fine.
Two weeks later the hard drive failed again. I brought it to the guys at the service desk again and they said "Yeah, it's the hard drive. We'll replace it for free since you were just here 2 weeks ago." So I let them fix it. When I received it a couple of days later I brought it home to restore everything from my backup and during the restoration process the dang hard drive failed again. At this point I had some friends coming to visit me so I got the computer repaired, didn't use it, and sent it home with them. Then, my parents went out and bought a newer 13" MacBook Pro and sent it to me.
This computer was wonderful. It worked great...for a month. Then the battery went out. Still under warranty, the computer hospital patched my little guy up and I was able to use the machine again. However, two weeks later, guess what happened? You got it! Another hard drive failure. At this point I was like "Ok, this has to be a user error." So I did some digging on the Internet and found that just closing the lid and hauling it around is not the way to handle the computer. So I started being more conscious about it, not running for trains, etc. I got the computer repaired again, this time under warranty and everything was great for another month when the hard drive failed again.
When I took it to get repaired again I asked what the heck was happening, why the same problem had been affecting two separate machines. They essentially told me to make sure the machine was powered all the way down. That makes sense considering what I had read previously. So this time I took all the necessary precautions and turned it off before I moved it anywhere. This method worked fine for two weeks. Today the hard drive has failed again.
The weird part about this story is that my dad has been using the old machine I sent with my friends ever since the end of December and has had zero problems with it, meanwhile I'm still having hard drive failure after hard drive failure. I just don't understand what's going on. Is this a user error? Am I doing something blatantly wrong with my machine that would cause this problem? Is it the fact that I've upgraded to the mountain lion OS? Is it merely the fact that I'm in Europe trying to use American products, even though I've gone out and bought the proper charger for the part of the world I am in? It's starting to become a huge annoyance, especially considering my finals are all next week and I have papers/presentations to prepare. Other than the obvious remedy of getting another repair job, is there anything I can do differently to make sure this doesn't happen again? I find it hard to believe that this is a fluke with 7 or so problems in two completely separate machines...
Sorry for such a long post. I figured that in order to get help people would need to hear the whole story. It's kind of unique and there are a lot of factors at play here. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your help and your time!

Well that's a tricky thing - I guess I should have said that it wasn't a completely new charger that I bought. The Apple certified store had just the wall outlet portion available. You know where you unplug it from the box and you can either make it a short plug or a long one? They gave me the long portion for the European outlets. The model number on the box on the charger from the old portion of the charger is - A1344. It's a 60W MagSafe power adapter. The guy at the store told me the box automatically converts so there's no need for a converter, you just need to plug it in. Can't find anything denoting a model number the half of the European charger. Both are Apple provided - the old portion is from my old computer of 6 years ago that is working at my dad's house and the newer half from Europe was from this Apple certified store. Hope that helps you out. I just want to make sure I don't make the same mistakes if they are my fault once I get back home. The Apple store is a 2.5 hour drive from me as opposed to a 15 minute train ride.

  • Help! folder icon w/ exclamation point - hard drive problem?

I live in the philippines and the store which i called up said the only solution is to show the receipt and they will send it to singapore but i still have to buy a new one. it's like they're not giving me choices at all. i know my iPod is not yet "dead", why do i have to buy a new one? how can i have this repaired?! it hasn't been a year yet, but around 10 months already and i don't have the receipt anymore.
    here's what happened...
for the past week my iPod has been skipping songs, going to the next ones but doesn't play at all. sometimes it even freezes. and i hear this whirring sound at the back.
so i decided to connect it to the computer and erase all my songs first coz i thought maybe the problem was with the files. but iTunes didn't recognize the device. so i decided to reset it (so that the songs and my factory settings will be erased) by pressing menu and select at the same time. then after i did this the "do not disconnect" message kept on showing up and eventually it just stayed there. so i tried resetting again. the apple logo shows up but after a while the folder icon with exclamation point shows up. then it would turn off.
I tried restoring it with updater but it says it could not mount the ipod. so this might be a hard drive problem already. how can i solve this?
    please help!

Try calling their toll free number <probably charges apply when you're calling outside the US>, 1-800-827-0685.
Usually, they will send your machine to the nearest repair station. I think in SEAsia, repair stations are in Malaysia.
Your iPod comes with a universal warranty, so you could definitely have that repaired even without the receipt. <Im from the Philippines too. I what you mean...>
    good luck!=D

  • Following having to erase the hard drive, I am attempting to re-install CS5 upgrade........

Following having to erase the hard drive, I am attempting to re-install CS5 from previously registered CDs as an upgrade to CS2. Although at the time of purchase, CS2 was acceptable, and the serial numbers of the NEW software remain registered on my 'account', the serial number of the original CS2 is now rejected as UN-acceptable, the oldest version now acceptable seeming to be CS3
    What do I do????

can you select cs2 as an upgradeable option in the dropdown box after entering your cs5 serial number?
if yes, use this serial number, Error: Activation Server Unavailable | CS2, Acrobat 7, Audition 3
if not,  contact adobe support by clicking here and, when available, click 'still need help', https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html

  • MBP Hard Drive Problem (Again)

My MBP is going back to the Geniuses for a HD problem for the 3rd time tomorrow, since I bought it in July. I am confused about exactly what is happening, and I would like any advice anyone might have about salvaging any of my data.
(The first two times, I brought it in because the HD died. The first time, they told me they had replaced the HD, though they hadn't. They ran diagnostics, decided it did not need to be replaced after erasing my data, and then gave it back to me. I brought it back the next day [t died that night as I was reinstalling] and they replaced the HD in about a day.)
Everything got really slow this weekend and I had "index" and "database" problems in my mail.app (twice), and my iTunes (twice). Now, the replacement HD has disappeared when I tried to reinstall the system software/repair the disk in disk utility.
    This is the chronology:
I have had this hard drive for 3 weeks, installed at the local apple store to replace my factory-installed dead hard drive.
On Friday, my mail app stopped working. After diagnosing the error message (thanks to this forum), I learned that the index file was corrupted, so I reinstalled the index.
On Saturday, my iTunes said it couldn't read my iPod, so I restored my iPod, erasing all of my data (music, calendars, contacts, important documents). I continued to get the same error message.
Today, I restored it again, but I still couldn't get iTunes to write more than 2 gb of information (of the 20 gb of data). At that point, I decided I would have to send my iPod in for repairs and stopped trying.
8 hours later, I got an error message that said the iTunes index was corrupted. I started to put the music back in to iTunes, but the MBP kept kept freezing.
I restarted the machine and received the blinking questionmark. I put in my system installation disks to run disk utility and, if need be, reinstall my system software.
This is where it gets interesting:
Disk Utility can see the topline Disk Description and the SMART status is verified. But the name of the disk itself is wrong and the mount point says it is unmounted. The capacity is correct, but under everything from owners enabled to number of files and space available, there is just a dash.
Unlike my previous hard drive problem, there is no clunking, and the hard drive appears to be working. Disk Utility found the following: Invalid B-tree node size. The volume needs to be repaired. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 HFS volume checked: volume needs repair. And that's it.
    My questions are:
    1. What is happening to my hard drive?
    2. Is it dead or is there any way to fix it?
    3. Is there any way to salvage my data? (Because of my iPod failure, I lost my calendars, contacts, important data from my last big back up 3 weeks ago, not to mention my carefully curated music collection. I have my documents backed up to gmail, but not my notes, which were on my iPod.)
    4. Does it sound like an internal hardware problem or is it really just two bum hard drives (from two different manufacturers) in a row?
MacBook Pro 2.16 ghz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

In case anyone receives a series of index problems which escalate into apparent hard drive failure and blinking question mark of doom . . .
the Geniuses fixed the computer by doing a complete wipe of my hard drive.
They said that the directory error may have existed from before my last hard drive was installed, but I am not certain how such a thing could exist.
Because it was a directory error, I lost all of my data on the hard drive, but I was able to take the machine home with me within an hour. Since the erase and reinstallation, my computer is running much, much faster, and seemingly cooler, but that may just be my relief at having a working machine back.

  • Been having Hard Drive Problems

I've been experiencing hard drive problems recently and this started 2 weeks ago. I'm not an expert in the hardware department (bare with me) but I own a 2.26ghz 2009 MBP and the hard drive has been fine up until recently. Not gonna lie, it's performance has decreased significantly over the years and Mountain Lion slowed it even futher.
Anyway I noticed it lagged after waking it from sleep; to the point where it wouldn't respond for longer than 10mins. I had to force shutdown several times, and was afraid of putting it to sleep in fear of encoutering the same problem over and over again. There was one day, where this happened , and it just died on me. Upon bootup, a logo appeared (circle with a cross through it, something to do with startup files?) so I force shutdown again, but everytime afterwards, I'd just get the grey screen of death.
At first I thought it was a virus, but then I took it into an Apple servicing store (I live in NZ, we don't have any apple stores) and they said it was the HDD. Long story short, I got a new HDD, plugged it in and proceeded to reinstall Snow Leopard. When I went to disk utility, it wouldn't even recognise the new HDD. I had the same problem when I tried to reinstall Snow Leopard to my old HDD (before I figured it was a dying hard drive).
My new drive is a WD Scorpio Blue, brand new. It should have no problems with being recognised right?
I've come to the conclusion that it has to be the SATA cable right now, but does anyone have any suggestions? If it is the cable, is there a specific one I should be looking out for? I'm still in HS so money is a bit of a problem. I just need this fixed so I can do my design work

One way to test is to place the HDD in an external enclosure and the boot the MBP with the Snow Leopard install disk.  If it appears in Disk Utility, then the internal connection is probably at fault.  A new cable should not be an expensive proposition.
    Ciao.
