T400 powers off or stands by randomly

My T400 has been doing the following 2 things randomly within the past week:
1) Without warning, system shuts down without blue screen.  No lights are displayed, even when on AC power.  Clicking power button does not reboot.  However, found a solution online on some other forum that involved disconnecting battery and power, pressing power button 10 times and then on the 11th time, holding power button for 30 seconds.  This works for me.
2) System randomly goes into standby mode, long before power management options should kick in (battery charge shows as 100%).
Could this be a battery fault issue or something else entirely?

Yea your running a bit warm.
If you giv your unit a good workout constantly that CPU grease and tend to burn up / dissiapate and/or you just need to dust out your fan.
If you want to confirm it's heat run the stress test under the Lenovo Toolbox.
If it's powering off while running that, and it's nto powering off when doing trivial applications (Notepad, WebSurfing) then it's most likely your fan.
Work on that first and if your still having problems hit us back up.
Could need a BIOS update. Could be further Hawrdawre issue.

  • MacBook Air Late 2012 randomly powers off. Won't stay on longer than 2 minutes.

I have a MacBook Air late 2012 model.
Every time I try to Reinstall OSX or try to run any diagnostics. It wont stay on long enough to finish anything. Some times it wont come on when you press the power key. I just does the Apple chime and then it could be 5 seconds or 2 mins but it always powers off.
I called Apple because the SSD was recalled for that year and the symptoms of a failing hard drive is random rebooting or powering off. So apple said they would fix it for free.
I am not near an apple store so I took it to an Apple licensed Technician to get the new SSD.  I got a call a few days later saying that the SSD was fine but I need a new Logic Board. He said it was the most expensive part of the laptop and that sounded very convenient for him that I need the most expensive part, about $478.00.
I would like to know the symptoms of a Failing Logic Board and the SSD
I can never get a straight answer from reading Apples forums.
This laptop was 1300.00 new and I had to buy it from my Ex again for 200.00 when she couldn't fix it. So im tired of putting money in a laptop that cant even run games or hold my entire iTunes Library lol.
If anyone has had this same problem let me know.
I'm afraid that its an easy fix and they are just trying to get more money.

  • WRT54G V8 randomly disconnects/"powers off"

Well, I'm having an issue here. I got a WRT54G V8 two days ago, so it's brand new. Anyway, I have this problem where the router randomly "powers off". By that, I mean that the power LED (orange light) goes off for a few seconds, then comes back on. The other lights stay on. When this happens, everything will get disconnected from the internet - my computer, my Wii, etc. However, everything go back to normal quickly after. I also had to disconnect/reconnect it once because nothing would be able to connect on the internet anymore, and the Linksys EasyLink software seemed to be convinced that I changed the router. After that happened, I decided to upgrade it to the latest firmware version. While this last problem didn't happen ever since, the power led still goes off randomly and I still get disconnected from the internet. Other than that, everything works like a charm and XP never gives me any network errors or anything of the sort. It's just that this issue is quite annoying when you're gaming and makes me wonder if I bought a defective one...
    Any help?
Oh, and in case you need more information... the computer has a wired connection to it, as my PS2, my Wii uses a wireless connection, and so does my DS when I use it. When the power light goes off, everything gets disconnected, wired or not. Also, I'm on a cable internet connection, the modem is a Motorola SURFboard SB5100.
Message Edited by Kelmster on 02-07-2008 12:45 PM

Okay, now I'm getting quite a bit annoyed. The problem keeps coming back randomly. Sometimes, it'll happen once or twice in a day and fixes itself quickly. But other times, like today, I feel like throwing it out of the window. Plus, I've been reading a lot of topics in here, and a lot of people seem to have the same issue as me. The orange light doesn't go off anymore, but the internet connection is being dropped randomly with no warnings, and the internet light does stay on. Power is not flashing, everything seems well when I look at the router. When the internet goes off, I can still access the router. I tried pretty much everything I saw in here, from disconnecting it and the modem for like a half hour to changing the IPs (gave everything on my network a static IP, even tried changing the router's IP), but that only fixes it for a couple of minutes, then bam, the problem comes back. Also did a factory reset, and yes the firmware is updated, but sadly, the problem is still there. It was there from day 1 and it won't go away.  I have no idea if it has to do with my Wii accessing the internet wirelessly while it's on WiiConnect24 (it connects randomly to check for updates). It would make sense if it did that everytime, but sometimes I play online on the Wii and the internet connection still works on my wired PC.
Seriously, is there anyone with a clue? I'm seriously thinking of returning it. I bought it to replace a noisy no-name wired router that seemed to like to make me mad. However, the Linksys one is giving me MORE problems! Is this a firmware or hardware issue here? Because I see a lot of people with the same issue, which makes me wonder if exchanging it for another one will actually change anything! I usually figure out problems by myself, but I have to say that this one has me clueless here. And, so far, in many, if not all, the cases where I was clueless about a problem, it was because of faulty hardware/software. The no-name router never dropped connections, and yet I always feared that it would explode in my face. But seriously, this is getting ridiculous. At this point, I actually wish that the problem is something stupid I forgot about, some setting that's hiding from me and that I have to activate/deactivate... I just wonder if exchanging it will fix the problem here.
Is there anyone who actually managed to fix that issue? If so, how did you do it? If you didn't, post here too, we need to make Linksys aware of that issue. Disconnecting the power every half hour or so is not a good solution. I hope it's just a firmware issue that could be fixed soon...

  • IPhone 4 keeps powering off at random times

My iPhone 4 keeps powering off at random times, I have restored it 3 times. It was real bad like every 15-20 mins, but after the restore, it is random.
It may turn off 2 times in an hour and be fine the rest of the day. Or it may turn off every 4 hours...
Nothing triggers it more then Ipod setting, Listening to the ipod.
    Any Ideas?

I had only the base apps. No music no other apps. Just played around with settings and checked mail. It did it with that as well.
Took it to my local apple store. They replaced it. New phone going strong so far. Full restore. All apps, all music, all ringtones, and movies. No issues so far... Seems like it was just a bad phone. But they took care of it!

  • My iPhone 4S keeps randomly powering off

Do you know why my iPhone 4S keeps randomly powering off?  I have rebricked my phone and it still does this.

Are you using a case with your iPhone? It could be holding down the power button on the top of the iPhone.
You can try restoring the iPhone as a new device, if that doesn't do it send it in for service.

  • IMac, update causing black screen and randomly powers off...?

I've seen many comment on this with few solutions.  It had never occurred until yesterday afternoon after the latest security update for Mavericks, 2014-005 v.1, was loaded and the system was rebooted.  After that moment the mac has been unusable.  It will start and after user log on, will black screen, sometimes still running and other times instantly powered off.  I have followed resetting the PRAM, and SMC procedures with no change and have booted into safe mode in order to examine the system and it is just as unstable there.  The times I have gotten it booted and running, attempting to access an earlier Time Machine backup, but before I can start reload it goes black.  The same goes while trying to check the sleep mode and security settings.  Unless this is an amazing coincidence, I believe the latest update has caused this problem and has for others as I have seen on many conversations.  Can this be uninstalled or does the drive need to get wiped and then reload from the Time Machine?
    Thanks.

Well, initial call into Apple Care and one answer.  "We have no idea what it is, we can get you an appointment at a Genius Bar in 4 days!"  4 days?!  Seriously?  At least they were kind enough to only put me on hold for 30 minutes, AND then transferred me to a "Sr. Care Specialist" who basically blew smoke up my arse only to tell me the same thing... why transfer me at all?

  • Samsung Gusto 2 powers off when close the lid

Saw another thread ("powers off randomly") about this and no answers were ever posted.
Is there a solution? Phone has plenty of charge in the battery and works fine when it's powered on. It just powers off immediately when I close it.

Removed battery and reseated. The phone now seems to remain in the powered on state when I close the lid.

  • Help: System won't reboot and powers off

I'm going out of my mind here.
I've been putting together an A64 system for 3 weeks now, and I get the weirdest behavior.
I put the system together with the following components:
    Neo Platinum Bios 1.3
    A64 3000+
    MSI 128MB 6800
    1 512MB Kingmax ddr500 DIMM in slot 1
Antec sonata case with Antec tru380 PS
    NEC dvd burner
Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB IDE drive
I could get it to boot up and start installing windows, but when it formatted the drives and would go to reboot, it would instead just power down.  If I hit the power switch, it would either start the fans, but not post with the diag lights all lit red, or do nothing.  If I pull the power cord for about 10 seconds and plug it back it, it will usually then post again.
I've bought or borrowed the following components and used them trying to solve this:
    Antec NeoPower 480 PS
    A different A64 3000+
    2 different Mushkin pc2700 256MB sticks
    A seagate 200GB hd
    2 different cd/dvd burners
    A different case
    A GeForce 3ti200
A UPS to be sure it wasn't a house power issue
    Some additional notes:
Thinking it may be a heat or heat sensor issue after a poweroff, I went into the bios and watched the hardware monitor the temp reads 65C which seemed high, but I see here there is a temp reporting problem with the bios.  More than once, when I hit the escape key to exit the hardware mon, the machine powered off.
Refusing to be beaten I slowly managed to get windows XP with SP1 installed on this machine.  Maybe once out of ten times I can get it to reboot, the rest of the time, trying to reboot does as above.
A few times while in windows, it has powered itself down while doing random things, often while typing into it.
So, I've read several suggestions here today that I will try such as putting the memory into DIMM slot 2 or 3.  Perhaps, I just have 3 DIMMS that all don't work with this board.  That will sure make this a much more expensive upgrade.
I've also seen much mention of problems being caused by keyboards.  I find it baffling that a keyboard could cause the above problems, especially the power cord needing to pulled for 10-20 seconds, but I will replace that that as well.
Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what is happening?  Could the board be bad?  It would be the second bad board I've gotten in trying to build this system.  The first was by another brand and had leads on the bottom of the board that were partially melted or scraped off, which is why I switched to the Neo Platinum.  Am I just the most unlucky person in the world????
    Help and thanks,
    mike

It very well could be power supply, even the one you temporarily installed could not have delivered enough amperage to get it through one of the more strenuous periods of system boot-up. You will need a healthy 22 to 24 amps PSU. Also, make sure the RAM you have installed, or tested with - is listed on MSI's test report for this board. Per RAM type, some sticks are only approved to run in certain slots.
Sounds to me either a RAM or PSU or both RAM and PSU issue. In addition...heat could also be a problem.

  • Why does my iPhone 3GS keep powering off into a black screen with what looks like a barcode displayed?

My iPhone 3GS keeps powering off at any point when between 5 and 50% battery remains.
I could be in the middle of texting, receiving a call or using an app when all of a sudden the screen goes black and very faint randomly distributed lines are visible from the top of the screen to the bottom. The display looks a little like a barcode. I am then unable to restart the phone without plugging it into a power supply. I've looked on the Internet and cannot find a similair case.
It is so frustrating and I am continually thinking it will crash at any point.
Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • IPhone 5 powering off

My iPhone 5 is randomly powering off at 35%, at 15%, and asking me to connect it to power. If I wait about 3-5 minutes, I can turn the phone on and use it normally. The battery percentage seems to move around quite a bit also.
    iPhone 5 32GB running iOS 6.1.4 (10B350)

If you've already tried a reset - holding down the power and home key until you see the Apple logo - then I think you'll need to chat with Apple regarding this.

  • Powering off and Drivers problem.

    Hi,
I just built my new rig afew days ago and all was well for until this morning. My rig keeps powering off by itself (no bsod or anything even though auto shutdown is disabled) and the power led on the case starts to flash on and off every second also the keyboard seems to still remain active (numerical lock led stays lit but non of the keys respond). The shutdown occur randomly and the only way to power back up is to disconnect the power cord for afew minutes and try again. I will be replacing the cheapo power supply with a Enermax EG465AX-VE in afew day hopefully but before I go out and blow £70 on one could anyone confirm this to be the most likely solution or could I try something else first.
The second problem I have got is that I can't install the Via 4in1 drivers (v4.51) and/or detonator drivers for the MSI FX5600XT card with out getting random lockups/frezzes and some programs failing to install e.g 3dmark2001 hangs half way through installation. I have re-installed Windows and am using the standard MSI drivers that came with the card. I also managed to install and run 3dmark2001 and Prime95 for 12 hours without any problems. But once I installed the Via drivers and/or Detonators /v45.27/v52.14/v56.64... and have AGP mode  8x enabled, I started to get those random lockups again so I uninstalled them.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Maxtor 160Gb SE
MSI FX5600XT with standard MSI Drivers (v5.2.1.4) that came with the card. Agp Fastwrites disabled, Apature 128Mb in bios, AGP mode: none.

    Hi,
I have installed the via drivers after uninstalling the MSI detonators then reinstalled detonator v56.72. I can now faithfully reproduce the 'invite loop error everytime I click on the FX5600XT tab in display setting and am getting a 'infinite loop error' 0x0..0EA. I have swapped both sticks of ram around tried one at a time but no joy.

  • Iphone powers off

Since 3.1, my phone will randomly power off and refuse to turn back on for a good 5 minutes or more. It will also power off while the battery meter is saying it has more than 10% power left, but in these cases the battery is actually dead.

    Hi,
I installed 3.1 yesterday night and I had the same issue 3 times today.
Edit: In fact, I don't think the phone powers off. I think it crashes. I have to reset it to get it running again. And for me, it does not seem to be related to the battery.

  • PC powering off when Video in Browser if Adobe Flash used...

    Hello.
My PC may randomly power off when using adobe flash video in browser.
    Similar topic:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1258555
    a) Temperatures in system are OK.
    b) System survived multiple stress tests. Some were focused on PSU, some on CPU, other on memory and other on graphics.
    c)Tested on:
    Opera 12 and 20
Browsers were either playing Flash, with chance to power off. When uninstalled Opera requested Adobe Plugin automatically on Youtube.
    Internet Explorer 11
If Adobe ActiveX not present, videos on youtube were played via HTML 5 without trouble. When ActiveX installed there was still no trouble, but since I have AMD graphic card, IE requested to enable "AMD steady video plugin". Once enabled there is still some chance to power off the PC.
    Catalyst settings:
When AMD steady video is not installed, or is disabled the chance for this behavior is still here.
If installed and enabled, system did not crashed due this.
I tried latest Adobe Flash 12, and previous 11 are causing this. I tried older Catalyst (13.12), and behavior repeats.
    Event log:
Empty. it literally looks like when somebody pulls the plug out.
    GPU behavior:
Usually last observed thing is that GPU clocks to full frequency for a while, and then to "video frequency" of 501Mhz.
    Other behavior:
This behavior is more like to happen when PC is "freshly booted". The longer is running, the longer it took to power off.
The symptoms are confusing to me. The issue is surely at least partially HW related, but bound only to Adobe Flash. No other HW accelerated video codec is causing similar behavior (at least until now).
On the other hand, its clearly bound to Adobe Flash 12 or latest 11, and some Catalyst settings.
Can you recommend me Adobe Flash version which is not using Amd Steady video at all?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for reply.
    a) System passed all stress test, whether graphical PSU, memory or CPU based.
    b) Its powering off only when using Adobe Flash player in browser.
I confimed that only Adobe Flash in any browser i tested is causing failure, but I re-think again what components are included in the whole chain. This was happenning even on stock frequencies and voltages, but...
(Data stream arrives from NIC, is transferred to RAM, then CPU picks it up, send it to GPU for (HW accelerated) decompresson , then back to CPU where browser start to manage the data and then back to GPU for displaying)
    a) CPU Core failure would cause BSOD, because I have 5 other CPUs to handle the event this way.
    b) GPU, NIC or Sound card failure will also lead to BSOD - CPUs will remain active...
    c) Memory failure will also lead to BSOD...
There is but single part of my PC, which can cause "Instant Power-Off" symptom. Its Northbridge/L3 cache.
Even when the Stock settings were causing exactly same symptom I focused on manual Bios settings. Yesterday evening (rather today early morning) I found configuration when Flash was stable.
Its not overheating, rather than overload of Northbridge/L3 cache. The amount of transactions between all devices must be tremendous... Therefore I had to customize CPU/NB settings in order to keep Adobe Flash stable. (slightly increase of CPU voltages +0,02v on CPU, 0,05v on NB when compared to stock).
For now I have to re-test those settings for few hours with Flash, and later with stability tests.

  • Envy 15t powers off

My Envy 15t has been powering off while I'm working on it for no apparent reason. I have contacted technical support via chat a couple of times. The BIOS was updated on the first session and a couple of drivers on the second, but they have not solved the problem. Has anyone seen this problem?

    Hi @Kouberator ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY 15 and just randomly starting to shut down.
I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which could help.
Here is a document on overheating which has many fixes that could help as well.
I recommend to do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook. I would suggest a date of just over a week before the issue started.
When performing a System restore please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices as they can cause issues.
Please let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
