T440s: Disk Password cannot be set in Bios

I got a new T440s with an 256gb SSD by Samsung. I would like to set a hard disk password in the bios. But the menu item "Hard Disk x Password" is not showing up on the bios page Security->Password. All other menu items from "Hardware Password Manager" to "Power-On Password" do show up.
Does anybody have the same problem? Is there another way of setting the hard disk password?

  • Unable to change or disable the KNOWN Hard disk password in BIOS

    Hello,
I am having few problems with my new TP W500.  I have enabled BitLocker Encryption in Vista Ultimate SP1 after I got my laptop and disabled it later. After a while I noticed that HD password option along with the passphrase option in the BIOS got grayed out and I cannot make any changes to the HD password. I know the HD password, system is booting up after I enter the HD password but very same password for the same hard disk is not working when I plug the Hard Disk into my TP T60p.
Called Lenovo support in Atlanta but they could not figure it out. They think HD got stuck encrypted eventhough I decrypted with BitLocker and formatted. Also called Hitachi and they don't have any idea about it. I also cleared and turned off the TPM in addition to clearing and disabling the security chip but  non of these actions were helpful to disable or change the KNOWN HD password. I wonder if reflashing the BIOS would solve it.
I would appreciate if anyone has an idea about this issue.
    Thanks.

  • I am trying to set up a mail account but I get a warning that my password cannot be sent securely to the server.  how do I correct the problem?

I am trying to set up a mail account but I get a warning that my password cannot be sent securely to the server.  How do I correct this so that I can set up my email account?

    1. If you haven't tried this already, just delete the user account entirely, and then try setting it up again.
    2. To find the permissions file:
         a. hold down the option key
         b. go to the Go menu in the finder
         c. scroll down to Library and open it
         d. in Library, go to Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences
         e. drag it to the trash and restart.
    3. if that doesn't work, go to Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access. In the Keychain Access menu, do Keychain First Aid, and repair.
This should keep you busy for a while.

  • How to set a disk password?

Hello all; please bear with me. I purchased my Macbook Air used and the original owner reset it, which required a "disk password" at startup. I wanted to change it and somehow managed to completely rid of it by turning off FileVault and then turning it back on. My question now is: Why am I no longer required to enter a disk password at startup if File Vault is on?

Ok, I've seen some other posts about this same issue and it seems to be a mystery. I'm wondering if it has to do with not actually having a user account set up when the laptop is restored to factory settings so a general disk password is set up? I guess my second question is this then: How does requiring a user password when File Vault is on any different from just requiring a user password without File Vault being turned on?

  • Can`t open password tab to set a supervisor password in security menu of BIOS. BIOS freezes

few days ago I bought one Thinkpad T60. All is fully functional excepting of one issue with BIOS password. It seems there is no password set previously since I can entry the BIOS menu and set all particular entries w/o any problem. Hovewer when I come to the point to set a BIOS password, the BIOS freezes suddently. Can anybody know what could be the reason for that? Is there some solution how to fix it? Thanks

Also just to clarify, reflashing a bios chip won't change the password or remove it, but if the chip is reburnned, which is often done when remanufacturing a board the entire chip's data is replaced. I don't know if this is possible or not, but since you suspected the system was "hacked", it is possible someone improperly reburned the wrong data onto the chip making the supervisor password option non operational. If (and I do stress the "if") this is the problem, then you can get the board repaired. This type of repair is often required if a bios flash is interrupted and the system becomes unusable, and usually costs $100-200.
Your best option might be to just use the system for what it is, or just replace the system board and be done with it.

You need to ask Apple for assistance with getting back into your old ID. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to resolve this issue through the Account Security team, fill out and submit this form.

  • Changed my apple id however cannot now use this new password to finish setting up iCloud on new iPhone bought today. HELP

    Hello,
This afternoon I bought a new iPhone 6! Everything was good until I needed to submit my Apple ID password to finish setting up iCloud.
I forget this password and so reset the password.  This password works on my computer however not on the iPhone when trying to complete setting up iCloud onto my new iPhone.
    Can anyone please help!?
    Greatly appreciated!

Make sure you are signed into iMessage and FaceTime with your current ID.  If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.)  Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iPad and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID).  Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless using iCloud Photo Library).  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out and choose Delete from My iPad when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device).

  • Time machine disk password rejected

I set up Time machine to backup my Mac on an external 3rd party hard drive and chose to encrypt it by using a password that I wrote down on the Mac itself (in a specific app). I regularly connect the drive to make a backup and it all works, except for the request, sometime, of the disk password. The first time I used that encrypted disk I had to enter the password that I wrote down before and confirmed the Mac to save it in the Keychain. Now, sometimes when the disk is connected, a dialog box appears asking me the "password to unlock the disk". I entered the same password everytime but didn't work (the dialog shakes), even though both the backup feature and the navigation (I mean accessing files and folders on the encrypted disk) work well.
I tried with different passwords and with capital letters but no success at all.
What should I do? Shall I ignore the request or may I have to fear that only the current Mac will be able to read the backup? Which by the way doesn't make a big sense!

Actually I thought that someone here would have replied to my question, so I guess the 100+ users may have read the topic cannot say anything about.
I sent a feedback to Apple about this issue, though it doesn't mean immediate assistance: they may see whether there's a bug and to fix it with an update, but it will require time. I currently do not fear the time, unless my computer breaksdown, as the Mac itself recognizes it and backs up my stuff in there.

  • T61p admin, boot, and disk passwords

Ok, my brother has been telling me to set the passwords on my laptop for some time now. He has a T60p just like mine. So while he was over here last weekend he stepped me through the various passwords you can setup to try them all out to see how they worked.
Since he was just showing me how to do this I figured I would make it easy on myself and set everything to the same password then come back and undo or reset them to something different. To make sure there were no issue, he did the same thing on his T60p. So we both stepped through setting the following passwords:
Power on, Hard disk and Administrator.
We set them all to the same simple word to to step through it and everything seemed to work. He showed me with each one how it was now protected from even powering up.  Then we tried to go back in and update the passwords to different more secure words. Well, we have an issue now.
Both of our laptops just tell us that nothing can be modifed in user mode in the bios. We power up and press blue button, then enter our password. Then select to enter the bios and enter our password again. But the Bios is just telling us that we are users and need the administrator to make changes.
So, is there a known issue with using the same password for all the different passwords?
    Any way to fix this?
I am sure of all the passwords as we both used the same simple word for all the passwords and now both laptops have the same issue.
As I can get past all the challenge passwords and use it and window 7 upgraded just fine it is not a large concern to me, but for Christmas getting myself a new laptop and want to give this to my kid. Would like to be able to clear out the passwords or reset them for him then.
As I have up to date full backups of my data, if I have to do some sort of reset/wipe and start like a clean factory machine again I have no issues with that if this is even possible. I tend to reload the machine 1/year anyway to keep it clean.

    good job figuring it out.
if you hadn't, there'd have been no solution other than a system board replacement.

  • Changing Shared Disks Password

    Hi All
I want to change the setting of my disk for shared disks from "With a disk password" to "with accounts" and when I do non of the files that was set up with a disk password show in with accounts.  I do disconnect and then reconnect but no joy.
Has anyone elso come across thisproblem and if so how do you resolve it?

If you want to work with accounts you need to do it from original setup.. you cannot apply accounts to an already loaded TC and expect to access the files.
Dump all the files to USB.. setup accounts and then copy all the files back.
But you should realise you have no improvement in security whatsoever if anyone has access to the TC.. they can just press reset button and all the accounts are gone and any files can be accessed.. it is totally inadequate as a security measure.. you are better setting up a encrypted file and adding files to it. And use encrypted TM if you are trying to stop other people getting access to your files.

How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.

    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.

    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • Boot Camp - Windows can read Mac disk, but cannot write to it

iMac OSX Snow Leopard. Windows XP.
Can anyone help me resolve this. I have installed Windows XP using Boot Camp. The Windows folder is 31GB using FAT32.
Windows can read from the Mac disk, but cannot write to it (I get an ACCESS DENIED) error.
I have checked that permissions are set to Read/Write on the Mac, and have run permissions manager to check all is well. I have also tried deleting and reinstalling Windows, and creating a second User on the Mac.
When I boot into OsX then I can write to the Mac hard disk from another (Windows) computer on a network.
I think this did work initially, and it stopped working when I changed the computer name on the Mac (though this might be a red herring -- but it did definitely work OK yesterday).
I'm a new convert to Macs, but am experienced with Windows machines, and I would appreciate any pointers.

This is by design. The driver that allows access to the HFS partition is read-only. This prevents any possibility that Windows viruses could become an attack vector against the Mac OS. If you need to transfer files between Mac and Windows, you can always use an external hard disk or memory stick formatted as FAT.
