Table 508 Acessibility in InDesign?

Hello,
we need to provide PDFs to a client that are fully 508 accessible. The one area that is always difficult are the tables - most of the tables our clients provide us with are complex (multiple header levels along the top, headers on the left, sometimes headers starting a new section in the table).
I've seen that Adobe Acrobat has a table inspector that can help with this. However, we do not design in Acrobat - we use InDesign. I've read elsewhere that Acrobat will not recognize table tagging done in InDesign (it will recognize a table tag, but not the tagging of individual cells - making them headers or data cells). Is that true?
The ideal would be for InDesign to have some kind of Table Ispector that would allow you to tag the tables in InDesign (data cells, header cells, even the "id"/"header" relationship of the cells if the tables are complex) and for Acrobat to recgonize these. Because right now, it seems you have to do all this kind of tagging in Acrobat, but if the client has a change and we need to output a new PDF, WE LOSE ALL THE WORK WE DID PREVIOUSLY IN ACROBAT.
Anyone facing the same thing that might hav found a work around?

Depends on the size of the magazine. I do a 100 page or so magazine every two months and I don't use a TOC I mark up by hand, which is easy enough to do.
Are you using CS4? Because you can use the cross references for something like this - I think, I don't have CS4 but from tuts I've seen it looks like you can.

How do I create a Table of Contents in InDesign CS6 for a print book that easily converts to epub?
Can anyone point me to a link for a step-by-step (not a video) on setting up all the elements of a print book properly (pages, table of contents and index) so they will convert and reflow perfectly from print to epub in InDesign CS6. This is not about building an ebook from ground up, but taking 50 backlisted print books (converted from old versions of Quark to InDesign) that now need to be converted to epub formats.
OR could someone point me to the link in the Adobe InDesign CS6 support that explains how to create a Table of Contents for a print book (5.5" x 8.5", 288 pages), one that will convert when the file is converted to ePub (for MAC OSX)?
Just downloaded the 706 page inDesign CS6 reference manual from Adobe <http://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/indesign_reference.pdf>  but there's not even a search feature on the pdf file.
Up until this week, we have only done print books, creating the TOC the old fashioned way, as a fixed page, comprised of two columns: page numbers and chapters/subject. The files I have created are taken by our printer and printed beautifully.
However, when I convert the same book to epub in CS6, the character and paragraph styles converted beautifully - but everything else is all over the place! The table of contents is on different pages, the columns split apart. That goes for the page contents as well - everything is all over the place. when it's converted to a pdf -- total perfection. Never any problems converting with perfection to pdf format and reading those on the various readers.
(Thank you so much in advance for any help).

<http://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/indesign_reference.pdf> Adobe Digital Reader does have a search feature for reading pdfs. Found the TOC instructions on page 176 of 706 pages.

Third-party plugins for InDesign can automate the process. Here's a thread from InDesignSecrets.com forums:

  • CS4-connecting to multiple tables within a single Indesign doc.

    Hi!
I recently downloaded Datalinker, a plugin for Indesign that lets you connect to databases. I created a table in indesign and pulled in data from one table in the database. The problem I'm having is if I create another table in the same indesign document and want to access a different table in the database, I can't get that to work. It seems like it only wants to be able to connect to one table at a time per document?
Does anyone know a different way to go about doing this?
    Thanks!

Have you contacted Teacup? They're very good about responding.

  • Best way to import tables from Illustrator to InDesign?

Taken over a new position and they have loads and loads of tables i'm going to need to bring into indesign...
    Any ideas much appreciated!
    David

Yes. Sorry, didn't think you wanted part of a file.
In that case I suppose you have a choice.
Crop out what you don't want in InDesign.
    or
Copy from Illustrator and paste into InDesign, but then you have to open
all of the Illustrator files. And if you are going to open them anyway
why not at that time remove all the stuff you don't want and place them
    as you would have.

  • I created a table of contents in Indesign CS4 exported it to a pdf format. Now having an issue in viewing it in full screen mode.

When I open the pdf document it is in full screen mode and when I click onto a table of content link it is  full screen vertical but not full screen horizontal.  How do I make it full screen both ways.

You are not making sense. Are you referring to the way the PDF is opened into your PDF reading application? If so, what has that to do with a 'table of contents'?
In any case, it seems not related to a problem with InDesign. Try the Acrobat forum instead.

  • Problem selecting table rows/cells in Indesign CC

I have a problem when trying to select rows and cells within tables created in Indesign CC. I am using a Macbook Pro on OSX 10.9.4.
As you can hopefully see from the image attached, I am unable to select cells & rows cleanly. Believe it or not the image attached shows the last 2 rows of the table selected. As I drag the cursor to highlight the cells/rows I want the highlighted section jumps all over the place so it is not clear which section of the table is actually selected.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what might be causing this I would appreciate your thoughts.
    Thanks
    Craig

I believe you should be on 9.1, this issue existed in that version and has been fixed in 9.2.1
I would recommend that you upgrade InDesign CC to at-least 9.2.1
    Thanks

  • Table Handling in XML Indesign Workflow

    Hi all,
I have a question related to the table handling in XML workflow.
The XML file have been imported to indesign for pagination purpose. Once the XML file have been imported all the tables and figure are came in Text Streams as INLINE, to make the figures and tables as floats we are draging from the XML structure to make it as floating instead of Inline, this is working for Figure.
I am not able to drag the tables from the XML structure.
Please help us to make the table float, is there is any script to make the table float or any other way.......

    Hi Kavya,
You have to create a dummy parent tag, now you can drag the parent tag to the frame.

  • Make Table Cells Transparents in InDesign CC 2014?? HELP!

    Hi!
I used to be able to make the fill on my table cells different transparencies in indesign. I could make it so the background would lightly show through, and the text would still be legible. I also was able to make the table border be transparent so the background would totally shine through. I can't do this anymore with the new 2014 release.
Does anyone know how to fix this??? Thanks!!!

I think it works like this here:

  • Help me tables on Multy page InDesign

Hi everyone, I want to ask about how to align text in table from word of IndesignEmpaste into Indesign table, the table spans multiple pages, however, whenever anew row into, InDesign automatically to the new page for that row, leaving a gap on the previous page. So how do you base text for it to jump to previous page A, for along table that seats just a few pages back losses this gap is not very good.

  • Create a two dimensional table in Acess

    Hi,
I am working with a database and the toolkit "the database connectivity tooset". I know how to create a new table from labview, but is it possible to create a "two dimensional" table from labview, i.e, where one table in Microsoft Access is linked to another one. I know how to do it in access, but it should be possible in program to crate a new table and this one has to be linked to another one then, just like the others. Does someone know how to do it??
    Thank you!

    Hi
I assume you are not so familiar with databases, are you?
First I want to comment your previous post:
well I have a table for a product that contains, say different data for the product, i.e. the date of the test, who is responsible for the test, where it was performed. Also, linked to the date (I guess it is the primary key), there are also some data related. so in my table in the database, next to the date, there is a "+"-sign, so I can open up the page of all the data related to the date.
Well, did you create this database on your own? So you must have created two tables (table one with fields Datum, Responsible & Cost and table two with fields Place1, Place2, Place3 & Place4). Then you must have dragged on field from one table to another field in the other table in the "Relations" view of access. Doing so, you created a relation. Due to this, access now knows how this date is related and displays the "+"-sign. You can not assume that the date is the primary key.
In fact you do not have a "2D" table, but just different datasets from two tables connected to each other. This connection is created by relations.
So, if I know would like to create a new table in my program (each product has its own table, so a new product=a new table), I would also like to create this "data" sheet that is connected to the data. Bu how do I do that?
I can easily just create a new table (i.e. a new product), just using the "DB Tools Create Table.vi". But I guess it is when I actually want to add the data to the database, where I create the "data" sheet? Using the "DB Tools Execute Query" and a SQL statement with INSERT INTO, is that the way to go?
As mentioned before, this "datasheet" is just a dataset from a second table which is made displayable by the relation. So if you're question is "how to create a relation using LV", you are quite on the right way. First create two tables one of which has to contain a field where the primary key from the other table is linked to. Then you have to set a PK in one table (using SQL statements) and then build the relation (also using SQL statements). I can't tell you, if you have to define the foreign key in the second table too.
Have a look at the MS-Access help on how to assign relations and how to define primary keys. There may be something to take care off. Basically standard SQL should do - but using MS you never know .
As this is somehow complicated, I always create the database structure in MS Access and that's it - afterwards all is done programatically (write and read data). Usually I don't open the database again with Access unless there is a special task.
Hope this helps you a little bit otherwise come and ask again.

  • Export table as image in InDesign CS6

I want to export a table as an image to use in an epub. When I open the Export dialog box, the Selection button is grayed out and I can't export just the table. Anyone have any suggestions why the Selection button isn't available?

Solved! You have to use the selection tool to select the text frame. Then you can export the selection.

  • Importing a large MS Word file with tables and graphics into InDesign CC

I have a large (300 page) Word file, either doc or docx and I'd like to import it into InDesgn to convert to a Kindle book.  I'm very new to InDesign.
    Thanks

You'll need to learn InDesign before you even think about going to epub.

Oh, and to answer you question, use file>place and then browse to the
Word file. Then shift click on the first page of the InDesign to
    automatically create enough pages.
