TAF with FAN issue

Oracle10gR2
RHEL 4AS 64-bit
Hello all,
I have configured TAF with FAN and I have got it to work. Here are the steps that I did to make it work.
1. Create a service with srvctl
2. Start the service with srvctl
3. exceute the dbms_service.modify_service package
4. Add the new service entry into the tnsnames.ora file
I tested it and it all worked fine. NOW, my question is I need to get it to work at the general user level. What I mean is if bob/bob@db1 connects to the database and issues a select query and then the instance is shutdown it doesn't failover...it looses the connection. How can I get it to work at this level? My current settings are SELECT and BASIC. THe failover works only when you login as SYSTEM, like the many docs out there show.
Any ideas
Thanks

Ok, so my question is at what level does it need to be set at? The database or instance or both? This is how I have it setup currently.

Do I also need to add the lines in PROD1 and PROD2??

  • TAF with FAN in oracle 11gr2 RAC

    dear all,
our enviornment is 11GR2 RAC with 2 ndoe RAC. it has four different applications accessing the database.
so for each application i have created services as A,B,C,D.
services in NODE1- Prefered service in NODE2 -Prefered
    A B
    C D
services in NODE1- available service in NODE2 -Available
    B A
    D C
now i have the services as described above.
    each services are created with
    srvctl add service -d DB -s A -r NODE1 -a NODE2 –P BASIC –y AUTOMATIC
    srvctl modify service -d DB -s A -q TRUE -P BASIC -e SELECT -z 180 -w 5 -j LONG
    srvctl start service -d DB -s A
now i have enable server-side TAF with FAN. so do i need to provide the TNS entries to application layer namely oracle client
    as below
    AP =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=cluster01-scan)(PORT=1521))
    (LOAD_BALANCE = YES)
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = TEST)
    (FAILOVER_MODE =
    (TYPE = SELECT)(METHOD = BASIC)(RETRIES = 180)(DELAY = 5))))
    or
do i need to add the above TNS entries in serverside tnsnames.ora file?
    1) the connection from jdbc thin or session established via JDBC thin is not having the TAF details in v$session view.
    SELECT machine, failover_method, failover_type,
    failed_over, service_name, COUNT(*)
    FROM v$session
    GROUP BY machine, failover_method, failover_type,
    failed_over, service_name;
if i execute the above query i couldnt find any session is having failover_method as BASIC and FAILOVER_TYPE as select.
all my application tier is using JDBC thin to access the database.
if i use oracle client from application server to access the database i could see my session having FAILOVER_METHOD as BASIC and FAILOVER_TYPE as SELECT.
so please provide me any realtime example for accessing database using JDBC thin with TAF and FAN properties for their sessions.

    Hi,
1.) No if you define a service with TAF, then the TAF information will be provided to the client, without having to specify it again in the TNSNAMES.ora (neither client nor server).
However it does not hurt, if you have specified it additionally (it just makes it more difficult if you want to change something, because the client side does not get updated).
See this whitepaper for more information:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/clustering/overview/awm11gr2-130711.pdf
2.) However it seems you have forgotten to specify something with the service (you seem to be missing -m):
    srvctl add service -h
Adds a service configuration to the Oracle Clusterware.
    -P {NONE | BASIC | PRECONNECT} TAF policy specification
-e <Failover type> Failover type (NONE, SESSION, or SELECT)
-m <Failover method> Failover method (NONE or BASIC)
    -w <integer> Failover delay
    -z <integer> Failover retries
    Regards
    Sebastian

  • More Heat/Fan Issues with Tiger--Help

I have followed the heat & fan issues for sometime. However, I finally decided it was time to move from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3.
I upgraded yesterday, first using the upgrade option to move from 10.3.9 to 10.4.0 and then installed the 10.4.3 combo upgrade. I've repaired permissions and rebuilt the disk directory using Disk Warrior. There were no directory errors and only a couple of trivial permissions changes.
However, my Powerbook's fans are running constantly and my CPU heat is always pegged at about 135 degrees F, which is as hot as it ever gets. This happens within about 40 minutes of starting the Powerbook up cold and it stays that way for as long as I'm using it, regardless if there are any apps being used.
Activity Monitor indicates that the launchd process is using from 18% to 20% of my CPU, even with nothing else running. I've disabled all Spotlight indexing and I've turned Dashboard off. It appears that it's the lanchd process that is accounting for the extra heat and fan use. It simply won't drop below the 18% to 20% of CPU. There is no other process that is using any significant amount of my CPU when nothing else is running.
My processor is set at Automatic, the same as when I was using 10.3.9.
I was using Silk, Application Switching Menu (ASM) and Macaroni, but I've uninstalled them. No change.
I've reset the Power Manager (including deleting the com.Apple.PowerManagement.xml file) and reset NVRAM. Again, no change.
Finally, when I boot back into 10.3.9 (on my backup hard drive), the fan activity and heat return to what I consider normal--much lower than with 10.4.3. Specifically, the heat and fan activity is directly related to CPU use. If I'm not doing anything, the heat drops and all the fans go off.
There is one other curious effect of 10.4.3 vs. 10.3.9. When I'm running Firefox (latest version), all Firefox user-interface stuff (menu selections, opening many tabs in succession, etc.) are MUCH more sluggish than when using 10.3.9. Frankly, I was expecting the opposite.
I would really like some help with this. I've read all the troubleshooing info on MacFixit and Macintouch related to heat and fan issues associated with Tiger.
    12 1.5Ghz Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I'm the originator of this thread and I appear to have an answer.
I tried an "Archive and Install" of Tiger, on top of my existing 10.4.3 install that was giving me the trouble I described above. I had the time today and figured "what the heck[ll]".
I then installed each additional piece (10.4.3 combo update, airport updates, quicktime updates, java updates, etc), stopping after each one to check CPU temperatures and CPU use in Activity Monitor.
I'm now back to a full 10.4.3 install, with all current recommended Apple software and I don't have the heat/CPU use problems I previously had. There is no significant use of the CPU by the launchd process.
I also re-enabled Spotlight indexing and that doesn't cause a problem either.
Also, my entire system is *MUCH* quicker and responsive. I wish I knew what piece in my previous system install was causing the problem, but hopefully my experience can help someone else. When in doubt, do an "Achive and Install" rather than an update to the previous system installation.
By the way, with heavy Spotlight indexing going on and mild web browsing, my CPU temp is just 112 to 115 degrees F. Previously, with no Spotlight indexing and with NO apps running, my CPU temp was maxed at 135 degrees with fans on full. And if you're reading this thread, you know what max fans sound like on a 12" PB.

  • For anyone with newer imac fan issues.

I posted about a week ago asking for advice on my fan issue.
I was getting istat readings of 2500 - 3000 - 3500 (max has been 3850) rpms from nothing more than being on the internet. The computer is 2 months old and prior to having the computer worked on for an unrelated issue I had never once heard the fans kick on.
But now my computer sounds like an airplane trying to take off - all the time.
So, with another visit to the apple store, support-line calls and a visit to an outside apple authorized service provider - I am here to tell anyone in the same boat, that having your fans blow LOUDLY, and ALL the time is perfectly "within spec."
I'm using it right now. Only safari is open and it sounds like monsoon season with a nice consistent rpm of 2700.
I am certainly frustrated but did want to share this follow up with anyone that's discouraged with their fans since I know when I first ran into the issue I scoured the forums for info.
Are they loud - you betcha!
Are they annoying - **** right!
Do they interfere with music and video - oh boy do they!
Does it sound like they computer is deathly ill - absolutely!
Is it all 'within spec' - yes, sadly it is.
I don't see anything else I can do at this point.

    @den.thed
I actually have that app. already. Its where Ive been getting all my crazy fan readings from.
The temp sensors I havent paid attention to though - which are the temp. sensors and what is abnormal?
Last time I took the computer into the mac genius(the 3rd time) - they just told me everything was fine and didnt even look at it! Then I was told by Apple Support to go to an outside service provider who also said there wasnt a problem. I had 50 screenshots of the fan at 3000+ speeds and they didnt seem concerned.
Overall I guess what im getting at is - even if it appears that there's a problem I dont even know what I can say to these people anymore!!! No matter what I say, Im told that the computer is fine. Its by far the most frustrating product/purchase problem Ive ever dealt with.
thanks for help so far though.
Anyone know how much I can recoup by parting the thing out?

  • 2008 iMac running beautifully untill recently. Screen glitches and freezing. Apple Hardware test showed error code  4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have not seen others with this code. Guessing it is a fan issue based on the ODD and HDD error codes

computer felt hot and while running apple hardware test the screen glitches covered the screen and it froze. Now computer wont boot up. Again AHT code is 4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have just seen ODD and HDD codes discussed on other threads. Those were hardrive or superdrive fans, so I am guessing this is a fan issue and then it fried by graphics card. Any help as to whether this is game over or worth repairing would be very appreciated.

You need to take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for a professional evaluation. Apple does not publish the codes from AHT, you can Google the code you got and see if you can determine what it means however the best method is to let a pro handle it.

  • G5 PPC Dual 2.0GHZ racing fan issue!

Hi all, as my previous threads show I have had some serious headaches with this issue.
    Anyway the saga continues....
I managed to get myself another logic board and fitted it in. The fans started to race - again! *Sigh*
But unlike before, they didn't start to race as soon as I turned the machine on and they didn't sound like
a jet engine in a hanger. Nonetheless they were still racing a little quieter and now they were starting
up once I could hear the hard drive kick in. Hmmmm
I installed a fresh version of 10.5 - no change.
I ran a system test - no change
I ran a thermal calib... Error on CPU1 - Tafs is out of range - processor needs replacing.
    *for f***s sake!!!!
Anyway - I ran a Systems Diagnostic and went thru the stand alone tests systematically...
all the tests passed (curiously enough so did the CPU's) but the only one that failed was the
    AMMETER SENSOR CPU B AD7417 AD4
Restarted and all is quiet! - *scratching my head now
Ran a Software Update, restarted - again, all is quiet!
Second Software update & 3 restarts later - all is still quiet!
Hopefully this remains quiet now but my question is... Is the AMMETER SENSOR failure fixable? Cheaply? Or anything to worry about??
    Rak

    Here are my readings:
    Temps:
    HD - 37
    CPU A - 60
    CPU A - Ambient - 29
    CPU B - 51
    CPU B - Ambient - 27
    Backside - 40
    Drive Bay - 25
    U3 Heatsink - 51
    Fans:
    CPU A INT - 300rpm
    CPU A EXH - 300rpm
    CPU B INT - 300rpm
    CPU B EXH - 300rpm
    Drive Bay - 1000rpm
    Slot - 76rpm
    Backside - 51rpm
I'm burning a disc as we speak aswell so no signs of any ramping up of heat or fans.
I also did a stand alone test using the ASD for the AMMETER SENSOR CPU B AD7417 AD4 that failed. As I was advised it may be a script clash and I should run it once more after any firmware updates & it failed again.
There is an issue but general running of the machine isn't hindered in any way. Almost like there is nothing wrong.

  • Question for those with memory issues on k8n neo plat

I have been having issues with my memory on the k8n neo platinum board since i built the system last month and i just recently discovered a fact I had overlooked.
I Have discovered that  if i test the system while it is cool (having sat turned off overnight for example), then memtest will pass the ram just fine and the system will be stable for a short period of time, generally longer if no intensive applications are used, ie. doom3 vs. websurfing).
This system, once it heats up ( seems mostly to be the nvidia 3 nb that needs to be "hot"- that is, a probe placed in contact with the module reaches about 58+ degrees c) then the system becomes unstable and memtest, if used, fails.
Prime95, if used on it when its cool, will usually take about an hour or so to fail, but if its used on the system when its been running a bit ( temps from nb at 58c+ and memory module hot to the touch) then it fails after about 20-30 seconds.
I have placed an active hs on the nb in an attempt to correct this, but temps still remain high with failures occuring.
I have spent the better part of three days testing the sytem this way and the above facts have held true in all these tests.
I have  tested at stock ratings ( not using "auto" in bios, but using "approved ratings" of 10 x 200 for fsb and timings of 2-3-3-7 for my ram at 1:1 (which is recommended as well) since i am testing for base stability at this point;Voltages have been left at auto settings, however.
I was wondering if anyone else with memory issues could try this out and post if this seems to be the case for you as well.
Perhaps the memory issues on these boards are directly related to a problem with the nvidia 3 chipset running too hot?
Does anyone have a memory issue with these boards who is using water cooling on the NB ?
Lack of issues from people using 'problem" memory, but having no failures with water cooled nb's would support my assumption.

    Yes i did mean chipset.
I am using a stock hs/fan from amd, which seems to run a tad hot but, considering that I wont overclock until I can get board stable, its not an issue. (runs 35-40 idle and up to 72 intensive). I need the warranty more then the extra mhz at present.
I removed the stock heatsink from the nvidia chipset and bought a generic chipset cooler (green, very little in the way of fins and seems to be aluminum) with a small fan.
I used a generic silver paste from Compusa to adhere both the cpu hs and the chipset.
I didnt lap either hs, just installed each as per instructions on artic silvers website (figured it had to go on the same way even generic).
I also bought a kingwin thermal center which i ran probes from to the cpu, case, and nb chipset.
I am not using it to adjust fans so those arent connected - its just a reference temp I can see at a glance, esp considering the funky bios reading this boards been known to give.
I assume from these responces that even a nvidia 3 250 chipset shouldnt get as hot as mine?
I asked about that from the retailer i bought this from but he seemed to think it was "ok" at 50ish celcius, but then again he didnt look too confident when he said it, lol.
Idle right now reads on Corecenter at 28 celcius for cpu and 33 celcius for the chipset, although, I have readings of 37 c and 43 c from the kingwin thermal center, which i believe to be more accurate.
My voltage reads at 11.67 for the 12v line at idle right now.
The psu i got is stick from the xblade case i bought in store. (http://www.xoxide.com/xblade2.html)
I have a dvd burner, cd drive, and two maxtor ide hd's attached to the system; The only card is the agp.
Is there a way to check and see if the cpu ispower starved? software monitor or even an external probe perhaps?
I havent put a probe on it, but the ram came in its own heatspreader, which gets very hot to the touch as well.
What temps should I be looking for on these items?

    MSI GT70 2PC-1044US - HDMI / GPU / FAN issues
I am having trouble with my HDMI port on a brand new MSI GT70 2PC-1044US . Whenever I plug my HDMI cable from my notebook to the TV, after a few minutes (5 - 20 minutes), my fan will start reving at around 5k RPMs and sounds like a jet engine. When this happens, according to MSI Dragon Gaming Center tool/monitor, the GPU temp reading hits 255 degrees Celsius, which is clearly a glitch. I used another monitor, msi afterburner, and when this HDMI problem happens, this tool reads a normal 40 degrees Celsius.
Here are the things I have tried so far but the problem keeps reoccurring:
    1. Called MSI tech support, sent me the link to the newest BIOS and updated it
    2. Called MSI tech support again, claimed the HDMI is controlled by the intel graphic controller, and they recommended that i update intel drivers (every software tool on my notebook says it's the NVIDIA GPU that controls the HDMI port /shrug???), so i did this as well.
    3. Called MSI teck support again, they suggested I send the notebook back to MSI so they could take a look at the hardware. I did not do this because I did not trust the tech guy and did not want to wait a few weeks to get my notebook back
    4. Luckily, the store I bought my notebook at was nice enough to replace my notebook for a new one. I got home, tested it, and the same thing happened. So I think we eliminated faulty hardware.
So now what? What else can I try?

have you done EC reset? https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/how-to-reset-the-ec-embedded-controller
can you try to plug the HDMI into your dell screen[insteal of sharp TV] to check if the same issue will hapends?
Install latest Intel GPU drivers from: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/graphics
    then retest
-Yes, I did the full EC reset. Once the EC flash was done, I removed the power cord from the back and the battery and let it sit for a few minutes before restarting.
    - My Dell monitor is old, and does not have an HDMI port, but I will try a different cable on a different TV.
-I already have the most recent intel graphic controller drivers, this one of the things the MSI tech support guys asked me to do by phone

  • Power Mac G5 PPC Screen Freeze Turbo Fan Issue

    Hello...
I've read most, if not all of the related posts; however, I have not seen any definitive answer to this issue.
My, almost mint condition, Power Mac G5 PPC has recently started the screen freeze, turbo fan, won't boot issue that seems to be prevalent with these models.  I've tried almost all of the suggested troubleshooting fixes and have had no luck.  My most recent attempt was to try and start in single-user mode (holding SHIFT + S at startup) and I received the following error screen then turbo fans: http://www.thishateofmine.com/Assets/photos/appleCPUpower.jpg
Remember...this is a PPC, so why am I getting an error referencing Intel CPU Power Management?  This leads me to believe the OSX 10.5.8 I've been running has installed system resources for non-existent CPU's and is causing a conflict.  This would be a major coding error on Apple's behalf, would it not?
I never had this issue when running any previous OS version and this computer had been running spectacularly.
It has only been used in my clean, smoke-free, home recording studio and if it werent' for a few blemishes left by external HDD's, this computer could pass as brand new.  There is very little internal dust and I have kept it clean with electronics approved compressed air.  I have not removed anything to get at the PSU area for cleaning, though.
If I could get it to boot from the original DVD's and install up from Panther, I would.  Based on the error message I'm receiving, I do not believe this is a logic board, RAM, CPU, etc... issue.  The computer will boot into open firmware and function fine, but not the OS; therefore, this would be an OS problem, right?  Is that not a logical mental path?
This HAS to be a known issue and have a resolve that is NOT logic board and/or CPU replacement related.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW...please read this as a positive communication from a frustrated (knowledgeable enough to be dangerous) user.  I just want my G5 back.

After plugging in the G5 PPC, as it had been unplugged for several days, here are last night’s efforts:
With only the original, main Hitachi Deckstar 400GB HDD in slot 1, I attempted to boot normal, boot holding SHIFT + COMMAND + V, boot holding COMMAND + S and boot to the original install DVD, all with no joy.  In my original post I incorrectly stated I was attempting to boot into single-user mode by holding SHIFT + S, which resulted in the screen displaying the OP’s linked image.  In attempting to boot into (actual) single-user mode and verbose mode, I get two different text messages – and have taken screen photos, but have not been able to upload yet – both of which stop with “DART enabled” and then do nothing else with no cursor capability, only to result in turbo fans and having to hold the power button down to shut down.
Next I ran (again) the Apple Hardware Test from the original install DVD and everything passed.
Feeling confident the hardware is all in working order, I used my brother’s Macbook Pro 3.1 (OS v10.6.8) as the host to mount the G5 PPC in target disk mode.  The PPC’s HDD mounts up with no issues and everything is accessible, so I shut down and swapped the original HDD with a 500GB Western Digital Caviar SE16 that did not have an OS on it, restarted to AHT DVD and ran test again with everything passing.
Now I reconnected the target disk mode setup, formatted the PPC’s WD HDD and installed Leopard on it while in TDM from the MBP3.1.  Everything installed, restarted will still TDM connected, MBP3.1 started up with the PPC’s HDD as the startup disk, went through all the typical initial install information and registration and voila I’m back in target disk mode with the PPC’s HDD as my boot disk and MBP3.1’s HDD on the desktop.  Everything’s accessible, functions and looks good.
Keeping in mind I’m only dangerously knowledgeable regarding computers, I’m thinking I should be able to shut everything down and now boot the G5 PPC from the internal WD HDD I just installed the OS on, right?  Wrong.  All I get is the infamous folder with a flashing question mark.
    Help!!!  (…please???)
BTW…as it has been mentioned in a few posts, but is one thing I have not done yet, I thought it worth mentioning.  I have not replaced the internal battery, but the last time I was able to get the computer to boot to the internal HDD and run for a short period of time, after being unplugged for several days, I did have to re-enter time, date, location, etc… info.  The actual last time I got it to boot, I did not do this, as it only got as far as loading the desktop before freezing, but the time was correct.  Didn’t get a chance to check date and location, as it froze almost instantaneously.

  • Having Macbook Pro sleep/fan Issues

SUMMARY: Macbook Pro eventually loses ability to sleep properly, will begin to constantly wake with fans at full speed and then quickly go back to sleep, back and forth every 30 seconds while the lid is closed. Restarting fixes the issue but it always comes back after a day or two. Help?
I only occasionally shut down my Macbook Pro - usually I just close the lid and let it sleep when I'm away. But I've noticed that, after a while from my last shutdown/startup, it has trouble staying in sleep mode when the lid is closed. Initially it will sleep and the light will begin to fade in and out like normal, but after about a minute the light will come back on and the fans will suddenly boost to full speed, then quiets down and the unit sleeps again. This cycle repeats every 30 seconds or so, so I'll come home to find my MBP hot and quickly fading in and out of sleep mode. When I open the lid, the screen comes on immediately, then fades to black. I have to hit a key or something to get it to wake up properly.
Any idea what's happening here? I have a feeling it might be software-related.

    Try these first:
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If neither hels then reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Has the T430 fan issue been fixed?

    Hello all,
I am thinking of selling my Macbook Pro and getting a T430, but I am a little concerned with the fan issue being reported here in the forums. Has the problem been fixed in the newer models? Thanks in advance for your reply.

I'm in the same situation, a year ago I purchased a T420 and I was very pleased as the notebook was very quietly most of the time. My notebook was stolen a week ago () and I'm looking for a replacement. As I understand not everybody is suffering this problem of whining fan,  have any idea  if this problem could be associated to only some particular models??. For example, this problem affects both the models with integrated & dedicated graphics (as far as I understand the dedicated GPU can generate lots of extra heat inside the machine that needs to be dissipated)??
    Best Regards
    Luis

  • Fan issues - noise unberable - mbpr

    Hello,
I'm having serious problem with fan speed/noise. Without any hard CPU usage (less then 20%), CPU die - digital is always very high and, I suppose, put the fans so high that the noise is unbearable.
I already bring my mbpr at the apple store, SMC reset ran twice and the Hardware test gave no error. They recommend me to change my 2 fans (around 90$) but it did not resolve the noise issues...

my 13" macbook pro 2011 turn hot when i open windows (boot camp) and also using microsoft word on mac os x, why this issue happen? anyone with same issue?

try smcfancontrol.its a good program controling the temp of computer if you set the speed of fan to a high value.
you know, the temp increases a lot when you are watching movies or doing work like data base or office work, due to high usage of processor.
