Talk about XP not supporting Java!?!

had to move to an XP machine recently.
i don't get BSOD, compile errors, runtime errors (yet)
but when i use the XP Search Companion to look for files containing certain words, it will not return the files if the file extension is .jsp or .java. for example:
1. created a new folder C:\New and file menu.jsp in it containing one line with the words "focus focus focus." i used the following settings in the search dialog:
- A word or phrase in the file: focus
- Look in: New
- Type of file: (All Files and Folders)
DID NOT WORK
2. changed the file extension of menu.jsp to menu.txt and did the same search.
IT WORKED!!!
3. changed the file extension back to .jsp and used following search settings:
- A word or phrase in the file: focus
- Look in: New
- Type of file: Java Server Pages source
DID NOT WORK.
4. changed the file extension to .java and used the following search settings:
- A word or phrase in the file: focus
- Look in: New
- Type of file: (All Files and Folders)
DID NOT WORK.
5. changed the file extension to .xml and used the following search settings:
- A word or phrase in the file: focus
- Look in: New
- Type of file: (All Files and Folders)
IT WORKED.
6. did the same tests on a friend's XP machine, same results
7. i've also tried the following but to no avail:
- XP repair reinstall
- My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View and unchecked "Hide protected operating system files"
not good. i use this tool a lot. esp when figuring out source code.
i must be missing something real basic here. please post if you know what's going on, have a fix or workaround, have any suggestion, have pointer to where i can look for more help.
thanks much,
--meg

well, Windows NT/2000 has been kind to me in the past years. i wanted it on the new machine but the computer dealer wouldn't support it anymore :(
i'm glad the search is back. grep worked fine for a day but i missed being able to just click on sort columns, click on files and delete/open/rename them, all right in the results window.
little things like this have kept me on windows for development. fortunately, java is quite portable and not much needs changing when moved to the unix production server.
now if only i can pry me away from emacs...
but i digress.
thanks for the replies.

The Firefox icon is the default feature for Windows Vista and 7 only, it does not apply to Windows XP users.
To have the Firefox icon instead of the Menu Bar:
View > Toolbars and UNCHECK the Menu Bar.
After that, click on the Firefox icon and you'll have the Menu Bar appear again.

  • NOKIA lumia windows 8 phones not supporting JAVA

Hi Nokia lumia latest windows 8 phones not supporting java. I Think its a big draw back because we cant install any java apps like Mobile banking Apps. Java apps market increasing day by day. Why nokia avoid this feature. is there any solution for this problem.

no solution unfortunately, however you may be able to try your luck with the WebApps app from the Store, and then search for your particular mobile banking website within that app.
and no, it is not Nokia that is not implementing support for Java, it is part of the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 operating system. if you wish to leave feedback with them, you can do so over at http://windowsphone.uservoice.com

Pogo games plays on Java - the last version of Firefox 3.16.14 has a bug that does not support Java - I have been instructed by Pogo to install an earlier version of Firefox. How do I do that?

Firefox 3.6.15 was just released to fix that Bug.
You can use Help > '''Check for Updates''' to trigger an update to Firefox 3.6.15.

  • I use mini i pad but is not support java ... Thi is whorse ..... Do somthing .... U r apple ... So u have to find a way to work the webpages that need java ...

Ill try to work with some pages that need java .... And apple not support java ???
How i work with java ? There is a way to work  and downloding the pages ?

    1. We are not Apple. This is a user to user forum.
    2. Java is not supported because it does not meet Appleñs security criteria for their mobile OS.
    3. You can download brwosers from the App store that support Java, though it may not be 100%.  Search for "Java Browser" in the App store.

  • I have recently purchased the latest ipad. Got to say I am extremely dissapointed that it does not support Java or Flash which are platforms needed to do online business banking. I am now faced with ditching it and replacing it with a competitors product

I have recently purchased the latest ipad. Got to say I am extremely dissapointed that it does not support Java or flash which are platforms needed to do online business banking. I am now faced with ditching an expensive toy for a competitors product that offers full business functionallity. Is there any way round this ? It seems extremely bad form on apples part not to support this or make it very clear of the products limitations at the time of purchase.

Well, my bank has an app but the website does not use Flash or Java.  While my credit union doesn't have an app, their website doesn't require Flash or Java either.
I pay all my bills online, bank, and access my brokerage accounts.  None of the sites I have encountered require Flash or Java.  Some government sites do require Flash so I use Photon, it's a browser that does Flash content very well.  So you might check out some alternatives browsers.
Otherwise I suppose you will either dump you bank, your iPad, or just not do online banking.

  • Windows not supporting Java after 2004

I read in a new flash a few months ago that Windows was not going to support java after 2004. Does that mean that everything written in java for windows will no longer run. Should I be looking for a different programming language if I want to write a program for window??

It isn't an issue of support so much as an issue of MS not being able to hose the java language. This was all part of the lawsuit Sun brought against MS for having an "imcompatible" version of java in the browser. They are simply not going to ship a browser that has a java VM in it. I say this is good news, for a couple of reasons:
    1> applets suck
2> Sun will provide a downloadable (just like they do now) plug-in.
3> nobody has to deal with 1.1.4 or whatever the crappy version of java MS had written
Unless your bussiness is reliant on applets (higly unlikely) don't worry about it, Java will remain on the server side for a long time to come. However I would say this (please don't flame me unless you have experience with C# and disagree) C# is quit an improvement on Java (at least sytactically and symatics wise) if you only need to write for Windows (There is a project under way to port .NET to other platforms and C# was one of the first languages implemented).

  • Why does Apple not support Java Runtime Environment?

I am a U.S. Armed Forces Service Member, and I have ran into this problem so many times along with millions of other people, and I would like to ask Apple why don't you support JRE?  My job requires me to use websites that is designed for government use to run on Java. I travel a lot, and I work on the go; I love using my apple products such as the IPad, but when it comes down the sites that I must use, I can't. It is very frustrating and impossible to get the job done without accessing these sites. Apple, you would get so much more support/business if you would allow your faithful followers to have access to Java. Specifically JRE 1.5+.  I still do not understand the reason why Apple has consistently refuse to work with Java based application. Apple, please swallow your pride and give your supporter something to keep going with. Thank you.
    Regards,
    U.S. Navy Service Member.

    One take on it here:
    http://www.codenameone.com/3/post/2013/01/why-oracle-wont-issue-java-for-ios-any time-soon.html
As James said, you can comment to Apple, but given the many serious security problems that have and continue to be discovered in Java, the chance of Apple implementing or allowing a Java engine in iOS is vanishingly small.
Expanding on what Phil said, there is at least one app/service combination,  VirtualChrome, which says it supports Java. But you could achieve the same result with probably more control over security by just taking control of a desktop system running Java.
    Regards.

  • Windows XP does not support Java!

I was not surprised to see the statement from Microsoft that they will remove the JVM from their new operating system Windows XP, as it is "unecessary files for the user".
This causes a huge problem for all companies basing themselves on making applets. The reason for using applets is to provide web functionality without having to download plug-ins, but now this is no longer workable.
As a solution I request that Sun should come to the rescue here, as Microsoft surely will not be helpful.
What we need is a TINY file that will replace the functionality of the MS Java for the Internet Explorer. No huge 1.3 libraries, only the most basic things needed to run 1.1 applets like the MS virtual machine could. This system should be EXTREMELY easy to install for the end user. Just one click, and only the very, very basic files needed to replace the functionality should be installed. And only for the browser, to save space.
Basically what we need is a Java applet viewer plugin for Internet Explorer, that downloads extremely fast and that has installation procedures almost invisible to the end-user.
I emphasize on TINY (no 5MB huge beast!) and EXTREMELY easy to install. I am aware there exists solutions today, but they do not follow these criterias. This would be like a Java Browser Micro Edition for applets. Also, new VMs seem to be almost in practice non-functinal running applets written for Java 1.0 or 1.1, as we have seen in Netscape 6 which can run only a few existing applets, and very poorly. Please use the 1.1. standard, this will also save downloading time.
I expect Sun to take this seriously, as an applet free web would surely void a lot of work put into this branch of Java. And as a Java developer through several years, I would not think twice leaving Java in favour of C# if Sun does not provide a web browser solution for me, and everyone else depending on applets on the net. Not because I want to, but I see no other real world functional options now.

As a solution I request that Sun should come to the rescue here, as Microsoft surely will not be helpful.<<<You are right. Sun should come to the rescue here. Sun is not only helping us, but also helping Sun itself.

No huge 1.3 libraries, only the most basic things needed to run 1.1 applets like the MS virtual machine could. This system should be EXTREMELY easy to install for the end user. I expect Sun to take this seriously, as an applet free web would surely void a lot of work put into this branch of Java. <<<To get Sun's attention, we should help Sun realize that Java will become un-popular, maybe even disappears, because of this. I am not sure they really care there is a lot of work put into this branch of Java (sorry if I am wrong).
I just don't understand why this type of solution is not available today. Everybody (including a guy like me who is always in the dark) could see what MS would do even two years ago.
Sun, if you don't give us a solution, I will switch to C#, "Not because I want to, but I see no other real world functional options now."
Did I get somebody's attention? Could we get more people to talk to Sun?

  • LiveCycle does not support Java 7

This is more of a comment than a question if anyone else has this issue.  Java 6 reached end of life in February of 2013 and security scanner has begun to flag it a secrious security vulnerability.  I work on several governmetn projects and we are being forced to upgrade to Java 7, but I can't do this with LiveCycle.  Has anyone gotten LiveCycle to work with Java 7?

out TAM told us not to use JAVA 7. I too am in govt.
Here is the supported platforms for ES3.

FYI, even on the beta of ES4 the third party folder came with JAVA 6.

  • Remote Objects do not support Java Integers

Another got-cha with using flex ... this is getting pretty
    bad .. :(
Integers do not cross over from Java to ActionScript3, using
remote objects. Strings work out great, everything else do not.
Where do I report this bug?

After further research, it turns out that flex 3 is still in
the ALPHA stage and is not ready for general release. You simply
cannot get repeatable results when using Flex / Java / JBoss /
BlazeDS in any shape or form with no code change.
Flex just quits, no errors, no nothing. 10% it actually does
it's job (return remote objects), the rest of the time, it does
    not, it returns empty objects.
Would be great if this was tested before release.

  • ADF Faces af:table support java.util.Set

I was using a java.util.Set in my model classes, as implementation of the Collection interface. And wanted to show the Set using a <af:table> after a while I discoverded that the documentation did not mention support of java.util.Set, only List.
Now I have to convert my collection to List in the backing beans of my view.
Is there a better approch than converting every Set in the view using
    new Arraylist(set)?
And what is the reason of the missing Set support (or General Colelction support)?
    Thank you

Deepak, I don't think you know what you're writing about.
No, we do not support java.util.Set in <af:table>. For that matter, neither does <h:dataTable>.
The "why" of it is that we require indexed access into the table for operations like "Display rows 526-550". java.util.Set does not offer indexed access.
By the way, one corollary - do not use java.util.LinkedList with tables (ADF Faces or the JSF data table). If the list is small, then it won't be a problem, but with a large list, you'll get brutal performance.

  • If Html 5 not supported, Flash Fallback

I want a fallback to my edge animations if the users browser doesn't support html 5. I'm talking about animations NOT video. I created the same animation in flash and now I just need to know how to dynamically switch it out. I assume this is going to need to be done with JavaScript which I'm not very knowledgeable on.

There are a few posts about it and you can search the forum. Also here is a great article about browser detection.
