Tape alternatives

I'm going to be teaching filmmaking at a university this year. They're getting 5 new iMacs with FCS2. And they're going to get 5 (very) inexpensive video cameras. They can't afford to get DV decks for the editing stations so they're going to use the cameras to capture footage. One problem with that (along with many others) is that when someone is capturing, someone else cannot be outside shooting.
I'm not up on the camera market right now. We can't get cameras that have P2 cards. Is there some other thrifty camera that captures to a card (like an SD) or something else, such that the footage could quickly be dumped into the iMacs and be in a format ready to edit? Or is mini-DV still the way to go?
Thanks very much.

Tape-based or nothing, sorry. The only solution I can think of (and it would be a bit of drag) is to use iMovie 08 (which supports some hard drive based cams) to capture, and then bring the footage into FCP.

  • Wire Tap Alternatives?

Hey, Don't know if I'm in the correct forum, but on my previous G4 I used wire tap (freeware) for quite some time and it was the easiest way for me to record sounds coming from my imac, be it dvd's, internet apps, streaming audio etc. Anyway, now it no longer works since Wire Tap Pro came out with like a $20 charge. Are there any free apps that allow me to do the exact same thing, that I can download, or that is already built into Tiger? What about Sound Studio? And, how do you set it up? What I like to do is record my DVD concerts and import them into iTunes. Anyway I can do that for free?

Wire tap consumes messages off the input channel and publishes the unmodified message to both output channels.
OSB provides Location Transparency i.e it is a strategy to hide the physical locations of service endpoints from the service clients & provides a layer of abstraction between the service client and the service provider, and improves the operational aspect of adding or removing service providers without impact to the service clients.
how can use OSb to implement Wire Tap pattern.Yo can make use of Service Callouts [ for Synchronous call], Route Actions or Publish Action [ Asynchronous call ] to pass on the message to target system.
You can have proxy service receiving you request and in message flow and then use OSB Communication Actions to handle your wire trap pattern.

  • How to estimate recovery time from rman backup

how to estimate recovery time from rman backup?
The database is of size 800GB.
the approximate time to backup is 8- 10 hours.

"Recovery time" is : RESTORE DATABASE time + RECOVER DATABASE time.
    RESTORE can be done
    a. in parallel with multiple channels if your backup was created as multiple backupsets
    b. using incremental backups
    c. whether the backups are on
    i. disk
    ii. tape
Alternatively, if you have a Recovery Area with an Incrementally Update backup of the database, you can SWITCH DATABASE almost immediately
    RECOVER depends on
    a. how many archivelogs (in terms of size, not necessarily number) need to be applied
    -- this depends on
    i. transaction volume
ii. the "freshness" of the backups (how recent the backups are)
    b. whether required archivelogs are available on disk (which can be the case if the database backup itself is a very recent backup and archivelogs since then haven't been deleted {whether they have been backed up or not}) OR whether they need to be restored from
    i. disk backup
    ii. tape backup

  • Can I export an .mp4 file created by Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 to tape using alternative software?

I am editng with Premiere Pro CS4 on a Windows XP system.  I attempt to disable all startup and background software .  When i export a one hour completed project to tape, I invariably get at least one glitch (momentary stop) on the resulting tape. Is there an alternate program I can use to export to tape an .mp4 file created by CS4?

Could be wrong, but as far as I know the only way to "export" to tape is to PLAY the timeline while the camera is connected via Firewire and in record mode

  • What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a "widescreen anamorphic" 16:9 SD DVD (original aspect ratio is 14:9)?

I just received the masters for a new SD DVD. I would like to author a "widescreen anamorphic" SD DVD horizontally squeezed widescreen image stored in a standard 4:3 aspect ratio DVD image frame. (On 4:3 displays, mattes should preserve the original aspect ratio. On 16:9 displays the image will fill the screen at the highest possible resolution.)
Below I've listed the specs of the Digi Beta master tapes the producers have sent to me for digitizing. I'd like to know this: What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a widescreen anamorphic SD DVD, using material with an original aspect ratio of 14:9?
I've also listed my guesses below. Please let me know if my guesses are right. If not, please suggest alternatives (and if possible explain why.)
    TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF EXISTING MASTER:
    Tape: DigiBeta
    Original Aspect Ratio: 1.55 (14:9)
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
    Frame Size: 720 x 480
Anamorphic: Full-Height Anamorphic (16:9 image displayed in letterboxed, non-distored 4:3)
    Display Format: 4:3 Letterbox
MY GUESS AT IDEAL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS (for a DigiBeta, that is):
    Tape: DigiBeta
    Original Aspect Ratio: 1.55 (14:9)
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Frame Size: 720 x 540
    Anamorphic: YES
Display Format: 16:9 Anamorphic (horizontally squeezed widescreen image)
Please feel free to ask for clarification or further information you need to answer my question.
Thank you so much in advance for your help!
    Best, Noetical.
BTW, I can't wait for the day when everything has gone digital and we get digital intermediates instead of tapes to digitize!

Hi Nick...thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.
    Nick Holmes wrote:
What you have there is a mess.
    NTSC pixels are never square.
NTSC is 720x486, even when it is Anamorphic.
You shouldn't be using an already letterboxed master to make an Anamorphic version. Get the master that was made before the letterboxing stage.
When you make an Anamorphic DVD it should display as 16:9 full screen automatically on widescreen TVs.
The same DVD will automatically letterbox on 4:3 TVs.
Um yeah...duh. That's exactly what I was trying to explain in the preface of my question. I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear...all these things you mention are the reasons I'm putting together a list of the technical specs of the DigiBeta I need so I can have them send that instead of the stupid letterboxed version.
Look, I'm sending this request to some intern at their offices in England, asking for a master with which I can make an Anamorphic DVD. They already sent me this master, which as you and I both agree is an idiotic asset to use for these purposes. As such, I was hoping for advice on a more precise way of requesting the master that I need than asking for "the master that was made before the letterboxing stage." Upon reflection, perhaps I'll just do that. If you or anyone else has a suggestion about something I should add to my request that would improve the odds of them sending the tape I need, please repond. Thank you!
BTW, It's been a long time since anyone has responded to something I've written or said as though I'm an idiot. I remember now that I don't really like it. (Moving along...)

  • How do I get Streamclip AVI files that were saved without first installing Quicktime ALternative 1.81 to play in Premiere Elements 11?

I had Hi-8 "home movie" tapes transferred to mp4 files. To pull many short clips from these long files, I used MPEG Streamclip 1.2. The default save for these short clips was mp4. Either they didn't work in Adobe Premiere Elements 11 or I thought they wouldn't -- I can't recall now -- so I saved each clip as AVI. These AVI files won't play at all in Premier Elements. I Googled for advice and found that I needed to convert to Quicktime Alternate 1.81. I fear this had to be done before I saved the clips, but I didn't realize that. Still, I just now uninstalled Quicktime 7 and installed Quicktime 1.81, then tried converting the AVI clips files, first back to MP4 (didn't work at all in PE11) and then to MOV (only played audio). The AVI files play fine in Windows Media Player and VLC.  All I have are the original files saved as AVI in Streamclip. Is there any way to get these to play and be editable in Premiere Elements 11? I've attached a jpeg capture of a gspot readout for one of these files. THANKS!

Glad that you finally sorted out what you were doing and discovered DV AVI.
In your particular situation Prism would serve your purposes of generating the DV AVI 4:3 since your footage is 640 x 480. However, for others with different footage, the free Prism shortcoming is that it cannot offer DV AVI widescreen 16:9; whereas MPEG Streamclip can do the job for 16:9 as well as 4:3.
QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 that does come with the MPEG Streamclip's required MPEG2 Playback Component (free) also meets the Premiere Elements requirement for QuickTime installed on computer with Premiere Elements to work. This works in spite of the fact that QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 is not the latest version of the regular QuickTIme.
In post 2 of the following older thread, I detail the use of Prism (for 4:3) and MPEG Streamclip (for 4:3 and 16:9) to produce the DV AVI file.
Finished video of project looks "weird" / slightly choppy? - Elements Village
Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
Moving forward, do not use AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) or H.264.avi in Premiere Elements. It is not supported.

  • Importing VHS & 8mm tapes at highest quality?

I've been using the VHS-to-DVD USB device to import old VHS and 8mm tapes to my Mac (using S-Video cable, then work on them in iMovie. Simple, but I'm wondering if there are alternative means with higher quality results. The mpg files I get are 640 x 480. Are there some professional products that are significantly better, or should I be satisfied with the current results?

I have been using iMovie, since iMovie 02 (and now use iMovie 06 and iMovie 11).
I have been constantly exploring the best way to convert VHS to DVD with a Macintosh.
    I like the Grassvalley ADVC300 A/D coverter.
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material.
For maximum quality use iMovie 06, or Final Cut Express. If you don't need to do fancy editing, then there's no reason to have Final Cut Express.
Your workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels, aspect ratio, and original quality.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 is a 100% "lossless" combination and my DVD's look like they came from Hollywood!

Is there a way to insert comments into numbers on an ipad, or an alternative?

If you mean in the iBooks app - tap on Collections in the upper left corner. Then tap New. Name the collection. Tap Done. Then tap the Edit button in the upper right. Tap on the books that you want to move to select them. Tap Move in the upper let corner. Select the newly created collection.

  • L440 Clickpad - "Tap to click" function not working in "Trackpoint Only" mode

On a fresh Window 7 install it is possible to tap-to-click when using the Trackpoint rather than pressing down on the Clickpad (which is *very* noisy compared to the X220/X230 buttons and requires far more force). This is very nice alternative to using the Clickpad for left/middle/right button clicks when using the Trackpoint only. It requires almost no force, it generates zero noise and is very comfortable.
Unfortunately, upon installing the Synaptics Ultranav drivers from Lenovo SU, this function is no longer present! You MUST click down the Clickpad otherwise it is not possible to register a left/right/middle click when using the Trackpoint.
Even with Touchpad enabled this functionality is not present, which is quite baffling because you would expect that when the Trackpoint is used, the touchpad should behave as mouse buttons + gestures + scroll zones.
I remember that there were plenty of tricks that could be done through registry entries to enable/disable "hidden" functions of the Synaptics driver. Is there a knowledge base that I could browse and find out if there is a way of enabling the tap-to-click feature when using only the Trackpoint?

    Hi Harris,
sorry for not getting back to you quicker, had a job getting hold of an L440.
When I received the system it had driver version 16.6.4.27 installed and tapping worked as expected.  After updating to driver version 18.0.7.99 tapping also worked.
Which driver version did you receive from SystemUpdate?

  • Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive Software recommendations

    Hi all.
I have an old Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive that I keep around to access the old tapes. Moving from computer to computer I eventually started using TimeMachine for backup to SATA Externals. I moved important stuff off of the tapes to get faster access to the stuff I backed up.
I am running out of space again and decided I am going to build or buy some type of NAS box. This will involve buying some more drives ultimately and maybe some new backup software that will run off of a server. I am thinking of just using Time Machine over a network but I haven't decided yet.
Unfortunately while cleaning some drives and getting rid of old software and documents to make more space for new stuff I wiped a system disk that was on the G4 this was running on. The Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive came with included software when I bought it. I am pretty sure it was some light edition of Retrospect but I can't recall. I have the old G4 (not in service minus drives), a Power Mac G5, an iMac, and Mac Pro Tower.
Here is my delema. I want to get the VXA working again as I still have some files on there that I never went through. I would also like to use it for as long as it will run as a redundant backup system. I have run out of space on all the drives I currently have and will most likely just buy an external harddrive but until I get the more expensive NAS up and running I would like to avoid spending any unnecessary funds. Since I can't locate the cd with the driver and software I looked on their site. Retrospect has changed hands several times and there is no availble downloads other than the Utility. Oddly enough I found my CD storage box and I have every other OS, Utility, Script, etc that I have ever used so I am thinking it's lost or fell out of the box during a move.
Can anyone recommend some very inexpensive software that will backup (and control) the tape drive? I am willing to use open source/free alternatives or to buy used software. I thought about an old copy of Retrospect but I can find any. The new stuff looks great but since the minimum will require slapping down about a bill ($100) I figured that I should just use that money to buy an external in the next couple of days while I sort out the bigger more robust NAS plan. I also looked for BRUs lite software but they don't sell it anymore.
BRU is a good product but it's out of the budget for now at least until I figure out the NAS.
I just need some creative thinkers to make some suggestions that I might be able to employ so I can start cleaning off some of the other drives because I plan to use the SATA I, II, and III drives I have to put in the NAS. I will probably use PCIe cards or firewire/usb host cards to ulitize all the drives. You might be wondering why I want to save so much data and it's really simple. I have asset libaries and client work product which I often need to go back to either because they want some element re-done in a fresh way or because I can actually re-use some work product on new projects for other clients. I often take mockups and demos and re-cycle them by submitting them on new projects so I can offer more than one choice to clients during demo submissions.
    Anyone got any ideas?

    Hi Ivan,
Thanks for taking the time to link to this. It will probably help someone else. Yes you are correct. I believe that it is the full installer. I made this post then went and looked at the box I had. It's Retrospect Express. I probably should have been clearer on that. I believe Retrospect Express is a light edition.
I did try that installer and it doesn't look like the version I was using. For some reason I am thinking it was version 4.x or 5.x Another issue is that the version you linked to required a license. I don't recall if the version I had needed one but if it did I would have kept it with the disk in a disk box I have. It's not in the box.
I also contacted Retrospect and sent them the license and asked if they could help or make a suggestion. Their reply was "The program is not supported anymore and due to change of hands we no longer have records regarding your registration. Please buy the new product"
Another issue is that I had someone help me set it up when I first started using it. I needed to get it up and running before I actually had the time to read the documentation. Dantz' first manual was probably the most confusing manual I have ever read. (Or as my daughter would say "ever, ever, ever, ever" kind of like the way Taylor Swift sings it). ;-)
I suppose I may have to start looking for someone on Craigslist who has an old retired copy they would be willing to sell me. Then maybe I could use the version you linked to. All I need is the ability to control the tape. Read/Write/Erase. I will even forgo the index rebuilding feature for when an index get corrupted until I figure out my NAS box.

  • How to manage the alternative / interchangeable material in a BOM

    Dear Sir ,
firstly i appreciate any effor to handle this problem ...
secondly excuse me for long problem description and details .
thirdly consider it as a challenge for you .
    Suppose we have a (Finished Goods -> M1,M2) and (Raw Materials -> x1, x2 , x3 , y1 , y2 ) , Suppose the BOMs are :
    M1—( x1 , x3 ) , M2—( x1 , x2 ).
    - We receive Change notes type ( A , B , or C ) from the designer :
    Type (A) : For M1 that x1 will be replaced by y1 --> (Stop use of x1 for M1)
or type (B) : For M2 that y1 will be Alternative for x2. (It mean that we can use both of x2 & y1 alternatively)
or Type (C) : For M2 that x1 used qty in the BOM will be changed (change in Qty.)
Find the flow chart in order to know the requirements of the business .
So how i can control this bussines for each type (A,B,C) ?

    dear,
all alternative at SAP system can you handle by many  method ,
1- if you didn't use this item again related to all BOM you can use
    follow up material method .
you can use it at master data tap "mrp4" put discontinue indicator 1 also, put the follow up material.
after that go to specified BOM and link the follow up material item by follow up group,
2- if you will use  two alternative item parallel you can use
    alt.item method :
you make alt. item related to 2 item at one BOM , it will depend to strategy method
3- if you know the date that the old material will sufficient your production ,you can use the
    changing note method
you will create changing note and after that apply it at the BOM .
    thx.

  • How do I get vhs tape into my mac and record it to make it into a dvd?

    What cables/software are required, etc?
I would greatly appreciate your help.

    What cables/software are required, etc?
The cable you need will likely depend on you VHS deck and the specific device used to digitize your tapes. This can range from use of a digital camcorder or DVD recorder to a dedicated DAC (Digital-Analog Converter) to a capture card installed in your computer. Most will connect to your VHS deck using RCA and/or S-VHS cables with the computer side using either FireWire or USB cables. (My preference would be a FrireWire "pass through" camcorder or a dedicated FireWire DAC.)
In a similar manner, the software required will depend on the device used. FireWire devices can connected directly to digital editor applications (like iMovie) or dedicated capture applications (like Vidi) as desired as DV files. Content recorded to DVDs would have to be re-converted to DV or other "edit" compatible compression format before being eited. The normal process is to edit the DV (or alternative) source files and then pass the resulting project content to a DVD authoring application (like iDVD or Toast) for the creation of menus and burning.

  • Capturing Multiple Clips Straight from Tape?

Alright - just got my brand new computer with FCE installed, I'm upgrading from putting together home movies and little amusements in iMovie and getting a heftier program to do them.
In order to do this, I need to have some footage to work with. But in that, my first task, I have hit a brick wall. In iMovie, you can connect the camera and tell it to capture, and it'll start spitting out clips. in FCE, it will only put it in one gigantic video file - when the footage cuts, from one scene to another, it's all together in one mess. Surely, this advanced video editing system that I paid a lot of money for can import video as easily as iMovie. I have to be missing something.
    Thanks for your help,
    Aaron
    2.33GHz Core 2 Duo iMac Mac OS X (10.4.9) Canon HV10

I have the same beef! See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1021778&tstart=15 where I got a helpful response.
I like the clips with iMovie so I can dump stuff I won't use and save disc space. 13gigs for an hour of tape plus all the editing can soon eat up disc space!
I found a utility called SplitFuse which is good. The alternative is to capture in iMovie and import the clips you want. Or, for really rough importing, use capture now at the bits you want, then escape when you've finished.
    Cheers

  • Alternative to the firewire cable for macbooks

I was wondering if there was some sort of alternative to firewire for uploading film footage? My macbook does not have a port to plug in firewire. I know that USB can be used instead but that this can lower the quality. Is there another way that you can upload footage without lowering the quality but using a usb cable?

    I was quoted...? that's a first.
Anyway, the transfer protocol isn't what determines video quality, it's the camera. The new video cameras that use USB are not true DV as they use a compression algorithm. Comparing compressed video to DV is much like comparing a CD quality audio file (44.1kHz 16-bit) to it's mp3 counterpart. Acceptable? For most consumers the answer is probably yes. However, the video degrades quickly if you have to change file formats or compress it more for a smaller file size. The compressed format is why the new camers can use SD type memory cards instead of digital tape.
It's probably true that USB2.0 couldn't keep up with the amount of data a DV stream
When transferring many small files, USB 2.0 is as fast if not faster than Firewire 400, when transferring several files over 30MB(approx) Firewire 400 is faster. Files do not have to be broken up into packets and reassembled on the other end.

  • Question re: Editing DVDs made from old VCR tapes

We recently had a relative take some old family VCR tapes and install them on DVDs. Now we want to edit the DVDs. What will we need to edit these. When we open the DVDs there are 2 folders labeled audio TS and Video TS.

    Alternatively:
You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
