Target object on stage from within Class

Hi,
I have a custom class which uses some buttons on the stage. Or at least is trying to.
say have this code in the customClass.as file
package{
     import flash.events.*;
     import flash.display.MovieClip
     public class customClass{
          public function customCLass (){
               btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER , btnOVER);
          private function btnOVER (e:MouseEvent):void{
              btn.gotoAndStop('over');
The Lines marked in red throw me this kind of error:
1120: Access of undefined property btn.

I am creating the class in a sepparate file.
when i create an object in this class i pass another object to the class from the timeline. That returns no errors.
I create objects from the timeline like this:
var object:customClass = new customClass();

  • Accessing display object on the stage from another class

    I've googled this to no avail, I've only found how to manipulate the stage itself and not a display object on it, and I'm noob enough to not be able to figure it out from there. :/
    I have a movie clip on the main timeline with instance name displayName. I created a button that should change what frame displayName goes to (in order to...did you guess it?! diplay the Name of the button. Awesome. )
    So I am trying to write the code in a reusable fashion and have the buttons all linked to a class called GeoPuzzle. Inside GeoPuzzle I instantiate a touch event and run the code. However, the function has to be able to change displayName in the main part of the timeline and, of course, the compiler says displayName doesn't exist because I'm in a class and I'm talking about the stage.
    Here is the simplified code in the class:
    package  com.freerangeeggheads.puzzleography {
        import flash.display.MovieClip;
        import flash.events.TouchEvent;
        public class GeoPuzzle extends MovieClip {
            //declare variables
            public function setInitial (abbrev:String, fullName:String, isLocked:Boolean):void {
                //set parameters
                this.addEventListener(TouchEvent.TOUCH_BEGIN, geoTouchBeginHandler);
            public function GeoPuzzle (): void {
            public function geoTouchBeginHandler (e:TouchEvent): void {
                   e.target.addEventListener(TouchEvent.TOUCH_END, geoTouchEndHandler);
                   //some other methods
                   nameDisplay.gotoAndStop(e.target.abbrev);
            public function geoTouchEndHandler (e:TouchEvent): void {
                //some other methods
               nameDisplay.gotoAndStop("USA");
    The lines in bold are my problem. Now this code doesn't actually execute as is so if you see an error in it, yeah, I have no idea what the problem is, but it DID execute before and these lines still gave me trouble so I'm trying to troubleshoot on multiple fronts.
    How can I tell displayName to change it's current frame from within display object class?
    Thanks!

    if displayName is a GeoPuzzle instance, use:
    package  com.freerangeeggheads.puzzleography {
        import flash.display.MovieClip;
        import flash.events.TouchEvent;
        public class GeoPuzzle extends MovieClip {
            //declare variables
            public function setInitial (abbrev:String, fullName:String, isLocked:Boolean):void {
                //set parameters
                this.addEventListener(TouchEvent.TOUCH_BEGIN, geoTouchBeginHandler);
            public function GeoPuzzle (): void {
            public function geoTouchBeginHandler (e:TouchEvent): void {
                   e.target.addEventListener(TouchEvent.TOUCH_END, geoTouchEndHandler);
                   //some other methods
                   this.gotoAndStop(this.abbrev);
            public function geoTouchEndHandler (e:TouchEvent): void {
                //some other methods
               this.gotoAndStop("USA");

  • Reference Flex Stage From AS Class

    I have an AS2 Class that I am converting to AS3. There are
    several functions which used to reference _root to get a list of
    objects from the main "stage". I am having trouble finding a
    reference from the class to the main application.
    Specifically, this is what I would like to do:
    In the AS3 class, I want to reference the main application's
    stage display list and parse through it. For example, if I were
    using the following code from
    http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flex/2/docs/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=L iveDocs_Parts&file=00001853.html
    in an AS3 class, and I wanted to parse through the DisplayList of
    the main application's stage objects, how could I reference the
    main application stage without having to pass the objects through
    from the main application?
    The following code works if it is part of the main
    application, but using 'this' in the function call doesn't work,
    nor does the use of 'stage' if this same code is moved to and AS
    class and imported into the main application.
    function traceDisplayList(container:DisplayObjectContainer,
    indentString:String = ""):void {
    var child:DisplayObject;
    for (var i:uint=0; i < container.numChildren; i++) {
    child = container.getChildAt(i);
    trace (indentString, child, child.name);
    if (container.getChildAt(i) is DisplayObjectContainer) {
    traceDisplayList(DisplayObjectContainer(child), indentString
    + " ")
    traceDisplayList(this);
    Any suggestoins? Am I just approaching this the wrong way?
    Thank you.

    Thank you Peter. This was exactly what I needed. To make it
    work properly I just had to:
    import mx.core.Application
    var tempObj:Object = Application.application;
    traceDisplayList(tempObj);
    It works great! Thank you.

  • How to add objects to panel from another class?

    Hi this is what i am trying to do. I have a drag and adrop tool working where the users and select objects on a small panel and drag them to another panel called the tpan. What i want to do is create another class, which creates objects and now i want to display these objects on the tpan. So say i have a class DisplayTpan(), this class is used to display the objects which have been dragged from the small panel, and objects on this panel have mouselisteners attached, so that these objects can be moved around on the tpan. I have created another class called creatObj(), and from this class i want to add objects to the tpan. The DisplayTpan class extends a Jpanel, would this be he case for the CreateObj() class? In the CreateClass i have made a call to DisplayTpan t = new DisplayTPan();
    t.add(object);
    But this does not add the object to the panel, any ideas on how it should be done?
    Problem number two i have is say, I have two objects created on that oanel, i now want to draw a line t connect the two objects, this is just simply a call to the drawLine function but how would it be possible to add a ,mouselistener to that line, so it can be extended moved around etc? Any help much appreciated thanks.

    As for your first problem...too confusing...too tired...mb tomorrow it will make sense :)
    Fer the second...no need to add a mouse listener to each line. There are a couple options that spring to mind, the easiest I can think of is just check to see if the mouse click intersects with any of the lines (bit of geometry).
    The second, ugly but a hella allot more accurate and better (me thinks), is to create a bounding box around the line, so the user doesn't have to click right right on the line. I created this bounding box by painting the pixels with a special key to correspond to that line. The other nice thing about this key is the fact that the lookup is quick.
    The first step was the create a array of integers the size of the surface. Whenever a line is drawn on the graphical surface, do a corresponding line in the integer array, and create the bounding box inside this invisible array. Now whenever the user clicks just do a lookup into this array and check to see which line was selected...then go to town.
    If you want a more detailed explination, i'll post some code later.

  • How do I refer to the stage from a class?

    I have a class that places objects on stage with addChild(obj) it allowes me to position objects using pixels( say obj.x = 10; obj.y= 50; ) just fine but if
    I try this:  obj.x = stage.stageWidth / 2;  I get a message that I Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference

    The stage property is only available to objects that are currently on the display list. Your best bet is probably to pass a stage reference to the class when you instantiate it.

  • What is the proper syntax to hide a div on the stage from within two nested symbols?

    Hi everyone, I have recently started to use Adobe Edge and had some prior experience with Flash.
    I have a button with a click action inside two symbols that should hide a symbol placed on the stage, which in turn its is parent symbol.
    I tried using the following code but it didn't work:
    sym.$("Step1").hide();
    Thank you!
    Nuno

    I've got a similar issue and I thought I'd piggyback on this thread since I can't get your suggestions to work.
    Here's what I've got in my file -
    stage / fullRadial symbol / smRadial symbol / gold_btn element
    When you click gold_btn I want to hide a different symbol inside of fullRadial call measuringContent. This is the latest code I've tried within the gold_btn element -
    On click:
    sym.getComposition().getStage().getSymbol("fullRadial").play("Gold Corner");
    sym.getComposition().getStage().getSymbol("fullRadial").getSymbol("measuringContent").hide ();
    It plays my Gold Corner label just fine, but I've I can't get the hide to work with anything I've tried.
    Thanks for any help you can give.

  • How to refer to a Label on the Stage from within a Symbol

    Hi Edgefriends,
    I'm working on a project in Edge Animate, however I have about zero experience with JavaScript and I can't seem to get this working without it so I hope someone can help me to get this done.
    Below you see the code I need help with. It's part of a Symbol situated on the Stage. What I need it to do is to play from a Label ('subFontsTitels') situated on the Stage-level. I've tried a lot of posibilities but with no (satisfying) results. Could you please help me?
    Part of the code:
    Symbol.bindElementAction(compId, symbolName, "${_Button}", "click", function(sym, e) {
    // play the timeline from the given position (ms or label)
    sym.getComposition().getStage().sym.play('subFontsTitels');
    // insert code for mouse click here
    //Edge binding end

    hmmm it doesn't seem to solve the problem yet. I'll paste the full code attached to the symbol, maybe there's a problem with the whole combination of the code:
    Code
    Symbol.bindElementAction(compId, symbolName, "${_Button}", "mouseover", function(sym, e) {
    sym.stop("over");
    //Edge binding end
    Symbol.bindElementAction(compId, symbolName, "${_Button}", "mousedown", function(sym, e) {
    sym.stop("down");
    //Edge binding end
    Symbol.bindElementAction(compId, symbolName, "${_Button}", "mouseup", function(sym, e) {
    sym.stop("up");
    //Edge binding end
    Symbol.bindElementAction(compId, symbolName, "${_Button}", "mouseout", function(sym, e) {
    sym.stop("normal");
    //Edge binding end
    Symbol.bindElementAction(compId, symbolName, "${_Button}", "click", function(sym, e) {
    // play the timeline from the given position (ms or label)
    sym.play("subFontsTitels");
    //Edge binding end
    The symbol's name is SubTekstTitels and it's located directly on the Stage. The label "subFontsTitels" is located on the Stage aswell. I hope this will help getting this done.

  • Referencing Stage From External Class

    I have an external class file that extends the MovieClip
    class and is linked to a movieClip on the main stage. I need it to
    be able to access properties of other movieclips on the main stage.
    How could I do this. Here is what my base movieclip class that I
    want to access the stage with looks like. Remember, it is linked to
    a movieclip on the stage, if that matters...
    Obviously there is more code in the class, but I removed it
    for the sake of simplicity.

    that's what I thought too, but it's not working.
    in my document class Main I tried
    mc_bg:MovieClip = new mc_background();
    then i tried passing the mc_bg MovieClip instance to the Background class.
    That gives Error 1180: Call to a Possibly undefined method mc_background.

  • Refreshing AbstractTableModel from different class...

    Hi there ppl
    Anybody know how to call:
    model.fireTableStructureChanged()
    from a different class? when i try i get a compiler error saying that i cannot reference a non-static variable from a staic content.
    the first jframe holds a jtable that displays the model which consists of data from a db. the second jframe (which resides in another class) has a jtextfield which when submitted will update the db, therefore the db results need to be updated and then the model needs to be updated via
    model.fireTableStructureChanged()
    but from a different class. Is this possible and if so can somebody explain to me how?
    Thanks fellow Javites.

    Thanks for replying...
    The TrainServiceFrame.updateStationTable() exists within the TrainServiceFrame class and is intended to update the stationModel object when called from another class (which will be the NewTrainStationFrame class).
    <code>
         public static void updateStationTable() {
              stationModel.fireTableStructureChanged();
    </code>
    The second code fragement is from the second class NewTrainStationFrame (which is not a subclass) which contains a jframe, jtextfield and a button. the method call to the stationModel(stationModel = AbstractTableModel) is done via: TrainServiceFrame.updateStationTable() when the submit button is clicked sending the string to a method ( addNewStation(newStation); )which updates the db.
    <code>
    button.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
              public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
                        newStation = newStationField.getText();
                        addNewStation(newStation);
    // this would retrieve the updated db results + store in a TreeSet object
    // TrainServiceFrame.getTrainStations();
                        TrainServiceFrame.updateStationTable();
    </code>
    I have just noticed something that is missing which when attempted to fix resulted in the same problem. there should also be a method called to retrieve the updated db, but as this is from a static context yet again i fall into the same ditch as the variables that store these db results are non-static and exist within the TrainStationFrame class.
    Is the solution simply to change these relevent variables and methods that are to be called from another class, so that they are all static?

  • Referring to functions on the stage from a movieclip.

    First of all, I'd like to thank you to anyone who takes their time to read this. I registered to this forum for the sole purpose of getting help to this one issue of mine, as I found most issues were solved in here. By reading my problem (and hopefully responding) you're doing me a huge favour. Thanks in advance.
    I just started "coding" in AS3. By "coding", I actually mean trying around with features and generally trying to grasp the vast amount stuff you can do with this software of. I have some coding experience, however the way   Flash likes to hide code snippets all over my project does tend to confuse me. Not knowing where I tried putting the code and/or rewrote some other stuff keeps me sorta busy.
    I'd also like to apologize for the title, if it in any way confuses you. Shortening down my problem to a single sentence was hard, please keep that in mind.
    Anyway, my issue is this:
    Messing around with movieclips inside movieclips, I've keep encountering the error "1120: Access of undefined property onTimerComplete." I do realize that this error generally is caused by not having defined an instance correctly or not having it defined at all - an error beginners tend to make.
    Nonetheless, I'm not trying to refer to an instance/symbol, I am trying to call a function defined on the stage from within a movieclip that also is placed on the stage.
    I've been reading huge amounts of text/articles and how-to 's, but they all seem to only touch the subject lightly or simply going in head-first - becoming far too complicated for me (a beginner) to grasp.
    So, trying to sum my questions up into something that looks like a tl;dr:
    - What's up with levels, "_root" and referring to functions like in the older versions of flash?
    Flash tells me to use some display-package instead of _root, when I use that... (I do realize the article is from Flash 5.0)
    - How do you refer to a function defined on the stage, from inside a movieclip? (The function is a timer, that is supposed to make the mother-movieclip continue to the next child-movieclip.)
    Please, I really don't know how to define my problem any further than this. Ask as many questions as you would like, I really appreciate any help I can get.
    - Mattimussi

    click file/publish settings/flash and tick "permit debugging".  highlight the line number referenced in the error message.  (and, use:
    Calling:
    stop();
    MovieClip(root).startTimer();
    Defining:
    var myTimer:Timer = new Timer(2000, 1);
    myTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER_COMPLETE,onTimerComplete);
    myTimer.start();
    function onTimerComplete(event:TimerEvent):void{
    play();
    //myTimer.stop();
    function startTimer():void{
    trace("startTimer function was executed");
    myTimer.start();

  • SetOnCloseRequest() from within controller?

    Is it possible to set OnCloseRequest event handler for a Stage from within it's Scene's controller?
    I'm not sure I'm being clear enough, so here is the scenario:
    User opens an item for editing from the list of items. Item editor is in a new window. The user makes some changes, does not save them and tries to close the editor. In that instance I want the program to ask her whether she wants to save the changes, close without saving or cancel closing.
    Of course, I want to setOnCloseRequest(EventListener<WindowEvent>) for the editor. :) Any thoughts or suggestions? It doesn't have to be my way, I just care about the functionality.

    Actually, this was stupid, because it doesn't work until you assign current Scene to a Stage. So, in early phases (i.e. initialization) it causes the NullPointerException to be thrown. So, the only way is from the outside?
    Just talking to myself here.... perfectly normal... B-)

  • How do i use objects from one class in anohter?

    Hey
    I have two GUI classes ShowWhiteGUI and BasketGUI and then a control class ShowWhite. The control class calls all the method from anohter class's which the GUI classes are gonna use.

  • How to target a label on the stage from a loaded composition

    from EdgeCommons I'm using EC.loadComposition to load another website into a container within EA.
    Now, from a button inside this loaded composition I would like to call a stop function to target a label on the main stage of the EA file.
    sym.getComposition().getStage().stop("scene4"); does not work.
    It think it has to go outside of sym because the composition container is actually an iframe.
    Thank you

    Hi,
    I think you may have replied to my post accidentally. I had asked a question regarding javascripts that could target the stage from a symbol, not about coloring book apps.  However I have made one in Flash, here is the page I made (don't laugh, I never finished it).
    http://boogerbunch.com/home.html
    Here is a link to the forum I used to get the Info to build it, I would think the process would be very close in edge.
    http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx2004/coloringbook.htm
    Good luck!

    Hi there,
    I noticed your Edge Colouring Page post on the Adobe Forums.
    For my University work, I need to create a colouring page using Adobe Edge Animate. Is it possible if you could post a tutorial or step-by-step guide on how to do this please?
    Many Thanks

  • Is it possible to call methods from another class from within an abstract c

    Is it possible to call methods from another class from within an abstract class ?

    I found an example in teh JDK 131 JFC that may help you. I t is using swing interface and JTable
    If you can not use Swing, then you may want to do digging or try out with the idea presented here in example 3
    Notice that one should refine the abstract table model and you may want to create a method for something like
    public Object getValuesAtRow(int row) { return data[row;}
    to give the desired row and leave the method for
    getValuesAt alone for getting valued of particaular row and column.
    So Once you got the seelcted row index, idxSelctd, from your table
    you can get the row or set the row in your table model
    public TableExample3() {
    JFrame frame = new JFrame("Table");
    frame.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() {
    public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e) {System.exit(0);}});
    // Take the dummy data from SwingSet.
    final String[] names = {"First Name", "Last Name", "Favorite Color",
    "Favorite Number", "Vegetarian"};
    final Object[][] data = {
         {"Mark", "Andrews", "Red", new Integer(2), new Boolean(true)},
         {"Tom", "Ball", "Blue", new Integer(99), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Alan", "Chung", "Green", new Integer(838), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Jeff", "Dinkins", "Turquois", new Integer(8), new Boolean(true)},
         {"Amy", "Fowler", "Yellow", new Integer(3), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Brian", "Gerhold", "Green", new Integer(0), new Boolean(false)},
         {"James", "Gosling", "Pink", new Integer(21), new Boolean(false)},
         {"David", "Karlton", "Red", new Integer(1), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Dave", "Kloba", "Yellow", new Integer(14), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Peter", "Korn", "Purple", new Integer(12), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Phil", "Milne", "Purple", new Integer(3), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Dave", "Moore", "Green", new Integer(88), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Hans", "Muller", "Maroon", new Integer(5), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Rick", "Levenson", "Blue", new Integer(2), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Tim", "Prinzing", "Blue", new Integer(22), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Chester", "Rose", "Black", new Integer(0), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Ray", "Ryan", "Gray", new Integer(77), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Georges", "Saab", "Red", new Integer(4), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Willie", "Walker", "Phthalo Blue", new Integer(4), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Kathy", "Walrath", "Blue", new Integer(8), new Boolean(false)},
         {"Arnaud", "Weber", "Green", new Integer(44), new Boolean(false)}
    // Create a model of the data.
    TableModel dataModel = new AbstractTableModel() {
    // These methods always need to be implemented.
    public int getColumnCount() { return names.length; }
    public int getRowCount() { return data.length;}
    public Object getValueAt(int row, int col) {return data[row][col];}
    // The default implementations of these methods in
    // AbstractTableModel would work, but we can refine them.
    public String getColumnName(int column) {return names[column];}
    public Class getColumnClass(int col) {return getValueAt(0,col).getClass();}
    public boolean isCellEditable(int row, int col) {return (col==4);}
    public void setValueAt(Object aValue, int row, int column) {
    data[row][column] = aValue;
    };

  • Calling parent method from within child object

    Hello,
    A quick question! Is it possible to call a method in a parent object from within a child object.By child object I mean an object that was instantiated within the parent object.
    Thanks.

    A quick question! Is it possible to call a method in a
    parent object from within a child object.By child
    object I mean an object that was instantiated within
    the parent object.Since you are using ambiguous terminology, it would be much better if you provided a small sample of your code to avoid confusion. I am guessing that you are actually talking about an inner class when you say child class.
    If that is correct, then you can do something like this:
    class Parent {
      void foo() {}
      void bar() {}
      class Child {
        void foo() {}
        void test() {
          bar(); // No conflicts, just call the Parent method
          Parent.this.foo(); // Use explicit qualification to avoid conflicts.
