TC with Access via User Accounts

Hi all folks,
I start using a new TC (2TB with 7.5.1) with access via User Accounts switched on, but it confuses me a little. In general I'm interesting in storing some more data to the TC, also I'm interesting in using seperate folder/mountpoints.
I add some User Accounts (I used the short names from my Mac, for example lutz, test, work, gast and admin) and every User can logon/connect to the TC, with a User Folder and a "Data" Folder, but admin can't connect to the User Folder.
All the time I try to logon/connect with the admin User, I can mount the "Data" Folder, but I can't mount the "admin" Folder (but the folder is shown).
In the Mac Syslog I find,
/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[111]:
NetworkNode::handleMountCallBack returned -6602
I got a box with,
The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "admin" cannot be found.
And in the TC Syslog I find,
Syslog Protocol 6 - All Information
Nov 18 00:16:54 Gewichtung: 5 AFP login OK from [email protected].
Nov 18 00:16:57 Gewichtung: 5 AFP session from [email protected] closing.
Nov 18 00:16:58 Gewichtung: 5 AFP login OK from [email protected].
Nov 18 00:18:03 Gewichtung: 3 No Address for NTP server time.euro.apple.com.
I got folders like this, "lutz" and "Data" and both are empty.
From the admin Point of view the "Data" Folder looks like this and the "admin" folder can't connect too.
"Data"
"Data/Shared"
"Data/Users"
"Data/Users/lutz"
"Data/Users/test"
"Data/Users/gast"
"Data/Users/work"
"Data/MacBook.sparesbundle"
"Data/PowerBook.sparesbundle"
My question, is "admin" an TC internal User too?
What's the reason I can't mount the "admin" Folder and why I got a complete view to the TC filesystem with the "admin" User only?
It's nice to see this, but what's the reason!
How to add some more Shared folder for data exchange?!
Any idea what's happend,
thanks for any help, I can't find any information about this behavior,
Lutz
p.s.
The password from the User Account definitions are ignored for the "admin" user, the TC Password is used all the time.
p.s.
I read "http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html", too.

Hi all folks,
anyone who spend some time to add an User Account named "admin" to a TC and try to logon/connect to the TC with this user.
If someone try to do this, don't use the same password for "admin" and the TC itself, but try to logon/connect with "admin" to the TC with the defined passwords, both. I can connect "admin" to the TC with the TC password only, not with the password defined via User Account.
Thanks for any help,
Lutz

  • Cannot access primary user account - even with Install CD

I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out how to solve a OSX problem for a friend that ran into some problems on his iMac. For some reason, he wasn’t able to log onto his user account – the only one on this computer. He didn’t try to change his password, but something strange must have happened.
We tried to reset the password with an OS X install disc, but I couldn’t even find, much less access his user account. Thanks to the help of some folks at the Genius Bar of an Apple store, we were able to log onto the Root account and create a new account. I tried t recreate the original user account, but the computer wouldn’t allow it, as that account was already being used. If that user account was still active, why wasn’t I able to reset it with an install disc?
I’ve rebuilt the volumes with Disk Warrior, and repaired permissions with Disk Utilities. I’m at a loss on how to deal with accessing the original user account, which has a lot of important data. I’ve copied the user data to an external drive, and I’m thinking I might be able to import various files – email data, photographs, and various documents, but I’m hoping there be an alternative to what seems like a tedious route. Other than using an install disc to reset the password to the user account it can’t seem to recognize, are there any other ways to gain access to this account?
    My friend’s computer is a G4 iMac running, I believe, 10.3.9.

There are several possibilities as to why a user account may
not be correctly available or a password to it reset to fix it.
One of them may be, if the short name of the computer or of
an account was changed by the user; and later the system
may appear different or changed, with some of the user acct
settings or preferences no longer as they were prior to that.
There is a way to create a new admin level user account and
then move the older user info into the new account; then go
in and delete the other one. I am not certain as to how to do
this; but the topic has come up in these discussions, and the
general path is about the same from Panther through Leopard.
A few details may be named different, but similar as things go.
    • Mac OS X: *How to change user short name* or home directory name:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1428
    • How do I change owner's name in my Mac:
    http://www.askdavetaylor.com/howto_change_owners_name_applemac.html
While these kinds of details may not be behind the exact problem in
the computer in question, directory and user account issues do often
have similar causes. Often, they are user-caused events. If the general
Directory of information on the hard disk drive has a problem, the use
of a third-party disk tool such as Disk Warrior is usually advised. If that
were needed, usually more evidence across the system would appear.
There may be a way to use a Setup Assistant to recreate a new user
experience and start over with a new admin account and user name.
Then go into the system to ferret out the old user info.
+Sorry I can't be of more help; as I am being distracted by an elderly+
+person who can't figure out why I am online or what it means to be.+
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can access secondary User Accounts but when in one no windows show up?

    Hi there,
We are running an iMac Intel Core Duo 2 with 10.5.8 and are having issues with a second account. We set it up so that my girlfriend and I have an account each for our own iPhones. However we can't get her one to work.
We can access it and it takes us to her screen, however it never shows any activity or windows we might have opened. We know it works because if you turn Voiceover on we can tell it's still tabbing through menus and options and running behind the scenes. But the options it gives us are limited, and it's totally unusable.
All software is up to date, all disk permissions are OK and I have tried many of the help topics recommended on these boards. Even setting up a brand new account has the same issue.
Any help or insight you could offer would be gratefully received in case there is anything I've missed.
    Many thanks,
    Sean

Should anyone come to this topic in the future and be having similar issues, after 3 days of trying and resetting various things I had no joy in rectifying the fault with the second user account.
However I have found a workaround situation for using an iPod and iPhone with the same iTunes. And it goes something 'like' this (from memory):
    1. First up, be sure to have access to all the Music and preferences on your second user account by locating their folder in the Users folder and copying their iTunes folder in their Music folder somewhere safe. You may need to press Apple + I to access the folder and allow Admin access.
    2. Start up iTunes by holding down the ALT key, which will give you the option to create a second account. Name it, say where you want it to be stored and start it up. When it's seemingly working, shut it down.
    3. Copy the whole iTunes folder you backed up at Step 1 into that folder. This should preserve the previous Users playlists, album artwork, info etc.
    4. Whenever you restart iTunes from now on, hold down the ALT key and it's simply a case of choosing which account you desire.
    RESTORING iPOD
If however, like me, the iPod still won't work with the new account due to being synced with the faulty User Account's iTunes, then unplug your iPod, start up iTunes holding COMMAND + ALT and then plug it in. It should let you restore the iPod. Then quit out, restart the application and beginning afresh.
BE SURE TO GET EVERYTHING OFF YOUR iPOD THAT YOU WANT FIRST THOUGH OBVIOUSLY.
There are plenty of little apps out there that let you do so for free.
It doesn't solve the bigger issue listed at the top of this thread alas, but goes some way to getting your iPod back in commission again at least...

  • HT202213 I have 3 users on one computer with 3 unique user accounts.  Each have unique ITunes accounts.  How do we share our music libraries using home sharing?

I have 3 users on one computer with 3 unique user accounts.  Each of us have separate and unique ITunes accounts.  How do we share our music libraries using Home Sharing?  Everything that I can find talks about sharing between networked computers, but this is all on the same computer.  I just want to share between ITunes accounts.  Thanks!

Hi b noir, I also have two users on one pc with two different iTunes libraries.  But I also want to put them onto an external hard drive so that I can free up some memory on the pc.  So I figure I need to consolidate the two users iTunes libraries first before moving to hard drive?  But not quite sure how to do that on the iTunes 11?  Thanking you in advance!!

With my own user account (Admin) Safari works very well. With the second user account I have problems to display Websites correctly. Place this folder with Word documents located in your Home folder/directory in the Shared folder for your user account at Home > Shared and this employee can do the same when wanting to share a folder or documents with you.
After doing so, this folder with Word documents will be available in this user's Shared folder when the user logs in to their account.
The Shared and Public folders let you share files with other people.
The Shared folder is located in the Users folder on your hard disk. You can use it to share files with other users on your computer. The Shared folder is set up with Read & Write permissions so that all users can open the files in this folder and copy files to the folder.
Use your personal Public folder inside your home folder to share files with other people on the network. To share information in your Public folder, you must turn on Personal File Sharing in the Sharing pane of System Preferences. Your Public folder is set up with "Read only" permissions that allow others to see and copy its contents, but not change the content.
Your Public folder also contains a Drop Box folder, which is set up so other people can copy files to your Drop Box, but they cannot see its contents.

  • HT1386 synced with a another user account

When I tried to re-sync my iPhone 4S in iTunes and I click the boxes to sync contacts and calendar I get a message saying that this is synced with a another user account.  I only know about one account I have which I used to sync this up before any help please

This issue has been around for literally years and apple unfortunately seems to be doing nothing about it. The only way to solve it is literally to back up all of the information on your iphone. Wipe it and start again. If anyone at apple would like to give us a better way to do it please do!

  • Library problems with two XP user accounts accessing music in shared folder

I'm sorry if this has already been answered; I have not been able to find the answer. My wife and I each have a different user account on the same Windows XP machine. I recently combined our iTunes libraries into the shared folder on the computer. I correctly pointed iTunes (in each of our accounts) to the correct location for the music files. I did an "Add Folder to Library" to make sure each account had all of the music. When I did this, I got duplicate listings of all of the songs that also had exclamation points. When I did a "Get Info" on these songs, I found that each song was correctly pointed to the correct file location. I laboriously deleted each "exclamation point" song one at a time (in each account). Now the problem I have is that whenever my wife or I close iTunes and the other person opens iTunes in their XP user account, none of the songs can be found. The best way I've been able to resolve this is to (unfortunately) delete the entire library, and do an "Add Folder To Library" to find all of the song locations and include all of the songs back into the library. Surely this can't be how this is supposed to work.
    So, my questions are:
    - Do I need to add new albums / songs one at a time to avoid duplicates (rather than use the "Add Folder" for the entire iTunes music folder again)?
    - How do I setup iTunes so that my wife and I can each go into iTunes in our seperate XP accounts and have all of our songs right where we left them (WITHOUT having to delete the entire libary and "add" again.)
FYI: I'm using the latest version of iTunes and (again) I'm using Windows XP.
My wife and I really want to each get a new iPod Nano, but if I can't trust iTunes... forget it.
    THANKS!!!

I have this setup at working. Two accounts with all files stored on a shared folder, mine is a network drive. Each account has its own library and can access all files. We also use one iTunes account for rare purchases.
This is how did initial setup:
Make a folder in the shared folder. I called mine itunes.
This is where iTunes stores its files.
With second account point iTunes at shared folder.
Import the folder you created earlier.
This worked for me without duplications. The only complication is that when importing from CD with one account the other doesn't know it. The other account must do import on the folder for the CD just imported. We keep track of this with a spreadsheet updated to show which account has which CD files.

  • Store access problems with different Mac user accounts

    Hi,
My daughters account cannot connect to the iTunes store ONLY when she is logged into her user account on our iMac.
When logged into my user account she is able to connect to the store.
I can connect to the store if I log into my iTunes account when I am logged in her iMac user account.
Hope you are still with me!
    I am running Mac OS X 10.5.2 & iTunes 7.6.2 (9)
The computers firewall settings are 'allow all incoming connections'.
There have been no changes to our netgear router.
As stated there is no ISP issue here as she can connect on other Mac user accounts and I can connect on her Mac user account.
    I have deleted her .com.apple.iTunes.secure.plist
The error message -50 takes about 5 minutes to arrive after the 'accessing iTunes store' eventually stops. We have also had error -4 on one occasion.
It is possible to view her account details but when clicking on the iTunes store icon in iTunes it doesn't connect to the store.
I have deleted the existing iTunes file and downloaded a new iTunes file. I have changed the purchasing from shopping cart to one click in iTunes Preferences.
And I have emailed apple. Their reply hasn't been of help as yet.
Hopefully someone will have some ideas as to what to do next!
    Regards, Jon

I've had another reply back from Apple which I am posting should anyone else have similar problems. Sadly it is a very disappointing and I think rather strange response.
+I understand that you are still unable to sign into your accouint on your other computer. I sincerely apologize for any frustration this may have caused you and I would be happy to assist you today.+
+I have looked further into this issue and your issue seems to be caused by a technical issue, which is out of my scope of support. The iTunes Customer Support answers questions about iTunes Store billing and accounts, downloading purchases from the iTunes Store, and iTunes Store content.+
+However, Apple also offers support for the .Mac services. Please visit the .Mac Support website to review the information provided or submit a question to the .Mac Support team:+
    +http://www.apple.com/support/dotmac+
+In the future, if you need assistance with the iTunes Store, please don't hesitate to contact us again. I hope that you continue to enjoy using the iTunes Store. Thank you for being a loyal iTunes customer.+
    Sincerely,
So my question is Who answers technical iTunes support from Apple?
Don't get me wrong, I love Apple - their design, the fact my computer does 'just work' and the way I now listen to music. Just a bit surprised by that reply.
Anyway fortunately I solved my problem and I hope this thread helps anyone else.

  • 10.7.2 with AD Mobile User Accounts

    Hi All,
I am experiencing a very strange issue.
I am build MacBook Air operating environments, that bind via a script to a 2008 AD Server. The problem I am experiencing is when the system/Mobile account is removed from the network, the user can no longer access the Accounts Pane in system prefs, it get a message syaing "Preference Error - Could not load Users & Groups preference pane"
Also, if I log out, the Mobile Accout cannot log back in again, but local user accounts are fine.
When I check Directory Utility, under the Directory Editor, the User does not appear, it is like Lion is not creating the account as mobile. I have the AD services pane set up with "Create Mobile Account at Login" enabled, and "Require confirmation before creating a mobile account" diabled.
The part that makes this really weird, is I have a MacBook Pro 10.7.2 image built off the exact same config (I followed the config sheet step for step) - the only difference is the MBA is built off a MBA Retail Bundle (these images are intended for CSS) and the MBP is built of the MBP Retail Bundle.
Has anyone experienced this before, or would be able to give me some clue where I could look for a solution - the school I work at is gearing up to roll out about 600 laptops early next year, and the deadline for a solution to this is getting very close.
    thanks
    Matt

A little bit of more research - it seems it is something int he binding process (most likely in the binding process we use here) that is reset wh the OS is re-inatalled.
    - I used a the MBA Retail bundle to install a system on the computer.
    - I bound the computer to our ad and logged in with a mobile account.
    - I check for failure and confirmed it had the issue I described above.
    - I reinstalled Lion over the top of the system (using the internet download model)
    - The problem was gone.
but.. when I try to build an image around this, I can't reinstall the OS after the system is bound (I am working at a school and with the number of system I am using it is just not practicle)
    so i did the following
    - I used a the MBA Retail bundle to install a system on the computer.
    - I reinstalled Lion over the top of the system (using the internet download model)
    - I bound the computer to our ad and logged in with a mobile account.
    - and the system failed. (the exact same as has been described above)
So I am now fairly stuck on where to go with this...

  • Creat new admin cannot access old user accounts

i got a macbook running os x 10.6.8 i forget the admin account's password i created new administration account using command+s and typing following commands
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
now i can not access my old data i got 80 gb hard drive i can only access 6 gb of it how can i access my old user accounts and all of its data
    thanks for help in advance
    regards
    hardeep

Does the old user account have the same name as before , or has it been changed to 'xyz (deleted)' ?.
If it has a usable name, just go to System Preferences - Accounts & create a new one with that exact name.
Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents
You can then logout & into the 'new' one.
If the name needs changing : follow https://web.archive.org/web/20130919225809/http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428
rather than the current version at Apple
If you want to continue using the new account you've already made, but access the old folders :
Select the old account home folder in Finder, then use Finder - File menu - Get info (command I). Open the 'Sharing & Permissions' section at the bottom, then click the padlock icon at bottom right & authenticate with an admin name & password.
Click the + button & add your new account name to the list, then select it & change 'Read only' to 'Read & Write'.
Now click the gear icon at the bottom & choose 'Apply to enclosed items...'

  • HT2518 I've migrated from PC to IMAC, but it has created new users. I can't access these user accounts even though I've set up passwords for them as administrator. Can you assist?

I have transferred files from PC to IMac using Migration assistant. This has automatically set-up new users on the IMac and I can't access these. As administrator, I have set-up passwords for these new users, but when i try to acces these new users usung those passwords, the screen shakes as if the passwords are incorrect. Any suggestions?

I don't do Windoze, so haven't been able to test migrating from a PC.
There have been a few similar posts here.   Are you trying to log on to the new user account(s) via Fast User Switching?  If so, apparently that doesn't work.   You need to turn that off (via System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options. Remove the check from the Show fast user switching .... box.
Then log out of all accounts, restart, select the new account from the login screen and you should be prompted to set the password.
I'm not sure a screenshot will help (and to be honest I'm not sure how to do screenshots on the IMac - I've been a PC man for over a decade!).
In most places, Shift+Cmd+3 will print the entire screen; Shift+Cmd+4 will produce a "target" you can drag over a portion of the screen.
EDIT:  by "most places" I mean after you're logged-on, and OSX knows your preferences about how & where to put the screenshot.  So it won't work on the login screen itself.

  • Can the Admin Password give me access to user accounts desktop

I want to install macs at my office but I also want to have access to the staffs desktops (email etc) how do I do this so they can have their own passwords but in essence I have a master paswword?

Maybe you're thinking about something like Apple Remote Desktop?
    http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/
You can also connect with any VNC client.
If you just mean violating user's privacy while they aren't logged in, you could login with an administrator account, and look at their files, i.e., using the sudo command, or using the root account. Depending on how their email is stored, you could arrange to access that as well, if you know what you're doing and have sufficient access privileges. Do you run the mail server?
It might be possible to setup a user account with the same userid (but different password) and same home directory as another user, and thus access their desktop effectively as them. You would have to manually configure this though, there is no automated way to do this through Apple's account management interface.
