TCP ports versus UDP ports

hi all i'm trying to understand the difference between connecting on TCP versus UDP ports.
My understanding is that you connect to TCP Ports like this
new Socket(server, port);
A TCP port scan would consist of trying to connect to ports 1 to 65536.
Is that correct ?

In case you don't have time, however, there are basically five things that direct a packet: the source IP address, the source port, the protocol (e.g. TCP or UDP), the destination IP address, and the destination port.

    I am unable to telnet on command prompt for udp port 514. But when I use packet snifer or wireshark I am able to see traffic going to the targetted server from udp port 514. I thought it might be a firewall issue blocking the port from communicating. But
    I figured out that windows firewall is disabled. I am able to make similar connections on the cmd for tcp port 514.
    I did a netstat -an and see that udp:514 is enabled and listening on the server.
    What am I missing here?

  • Are we telnet-ing to tcp port 22, or udp port 22?

    When we do "telnet x.x.x.x 22", are we telnet-ing to tcp port 22, or udp port 22? Because SSH port 22 is both tcp and udp.

    Stro,
    The telnet server/deamon will only listen to  TCP port 23.  A telnet client will only use TCP as the transport  protocol.  I guess you could write your own telnet client (or use  netcat) to use UDP but on a Cisco router the telnet process will not  respond unless the connection request comes in on TCP port 23.  A quick  search on the web reveals this question is asked alot, for what reason I  am unsure.  Here's a wiki article:

    I have a question. As we know, scanning TCP ports is a lot eaiser than UDP ports because active UDP ports don't respond and there are other reasons as well.

    look at the code above, it can only tell you active TCP ports for the Throwable e tells you nothing about UDP ports. An active UDP port doesn' respond to the connection call "soc". Therefore it will throw an exception(connection refused) after trying to connect an active UDP port. This exception is just like those of closed TCP ports.
    What i am saying is that active UDP ports will be treated the same as closed TCP ports. They are hidden in closed TCP ports. How do i sift them out? Any solutions?

    I am basically trying to determine how many UDP and TCP ports on a machine are open. Open TCP ports are easy to see. But UDP ports are tricky. Can you please tell me more in detail using a datagram socket?

  • Airport Extreme Simultaneous Dual-Band port forwarding broken if only TCP ports with firmware 7.6.1

    When configuring my Airport Extreme Simultaneous Dual-Band router, port forwarding is broken if you only specify TCP ports to forward. This is with firmware 7.6.1. What happens is that after you hit the Update button, when the router comes back and you open the port forwarding entry, the IP is still there but the port numbers are missing.
    I tried all different port numbers and ranges and nothing would stick if i only specified TCP ports. If i added UDP ports with the TCP ports then it would save them. And if you add a new entry with only UDP it saves them too.
    Now this is with adding a new port forwarding. I already have existing ports being forwarded that only have TCP. They are still working. I believe i added them with a previous version of the firmware.
    Any one else see this issue? Any ideas?
    Maybe i should perform a hard reset and reload a saved config.

  • Nexus Logging to different tcp port

    On some of the older switches you can run a command like the one below to point to a server and a specific UDP/TCP port.
    logging host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx transport tcp port yyyy
    Trying to do the same on the Nexus but cannot find the command to do so.  using the following command now:
    logging server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 6 use-vrf management
    any suggestions?

  • TCP Port 62078 on my iPad is open

    TCP Port 62078 on my iPad is open with tcpwrappers - also UDP Port 5353 is open/filtered - is this normal? How can I close these ports? On my Macbook Pro they are closed. I do not like having open ports on my network.

    I maintain a firewall for our corporate network and management asked for a mDNS proxy so that their iPhones on our Wi-Fi network could see our Airprint printers on the Ethernet LAN.  I regularly see firewall log entries for traffic from desktops on the LAN to iPhones on the Wi-Fi network.  At first it seemed random, but then I realised that the desktops and the iPhones were assigned to the same user in each case. The iPhones have presumably been paired with the desktop (iTunes) in the past and the iPhones are using mDNS / Bonjour to look for desktops that they have been previously paired with.  The desktops are communicating from ports in the range of 60289 to 62089 and always direct to port 62078 on the iPhone.  We don't have iPads on our network (as far as I know!), but from the Original Poster, it appears that this may also be the case with iPads.
    A little bit of digging found an article about Juice Jacking : http://www.zdziarski.com/blog/?p=2345
    So this port is used for iPhone or iPad Wi-Fi synching, as mentioned by rjw1678.  Once a pairing has been established with a computer, then your iPhone or iPad will always try to pair with this device until such time as you perform a factory restore on the iPhone / iPad.

  • MAC Floods ISP with TCP ports and is shutdown when count reaches 200

    I was told by ISP provider that my MAC floods them with massive amount of TCP ports when I open a single Safari or FireFox web page. When I am NOT connected, the TCP port count is ABOUT 3 with a Windows XP using a IE connection to APPLE.com PLUS AN SSL CONNECTION. When I open the same web page ON MY MAC, the count INSTANTLY jumps to 70+ and if I connect to another page it jumps to well over 100. If I leave pages open and jump to several different sites, I soon exceed the MAX TCP port limit of 200 and everyone on our home network is pretty much shutdown. Since it is a wireless connection to the ISP, the have to limit TCP ports to 200 per antenna connection. WHY DOES MY MAC USE SO MANY TCP PORTS FOR A SINGLE BROWSER CONNECTION?
    The home network uses LinkSys WRT54G router and WAP54G configured as Wireless Repeater. Windows does not have this problem. I do not have this problem anywhere else but on this wireless ISP connection. How do I remedy this problem?

  • Does Anyone Know the Standard TCP Port number for "itpc" Protocol?

    Hello,
    I am trying to determine if the TCP port number for “itpc://” protocols is 3689 (iTunes Music Sharing), 443 (iTunes Store), 548 (Personal File Sharing, Apple File Share), or another number. Searching through this form and referring to “Well Known” TCP and UDP Ports Used By Apple Software Products Tech document help point me in the right direction, I have no way of confirming any of the numbers as the standard.

    Common to all applications

    * SYSLOG 514 (UDP)
    Fabric Manager Server and Performance Manager
    * SNMP_TRAP 2162 (UDP)
    * SNMP picks a random free local port (UDP) - (can be changed in server.properties)
    * Java RMI 9099, 9199 to 9299 (TCP)
    Fabric Manager Client
    * Java RMI 9099, 9199 to 9299 (TCP)
    * SNMP picks a random free local port. (UDP) or 9189 (TCP) if SNMP proxy is enabled (can be changed in server.properties)
    Device Manager

  • Enabling TCP Ports 24000-24100

    I am trying to enable TCP ports to be able to use a web site. It says I need to enable TCP ports 24000-24100. I went to system preferences/sharing/firewall/new and made new port with the tcp and udp numbers 24000-24100. Sadly, my problems still where not solved. I tried restarting and such but it just didn't work. Is there anything else I need to look into, anything else I can try?

    If you want reporting on specific TCP ports and packet count is sufficient then an alternative to consider would be to create an access list and assign it to the interface (depending on your requirements you might want one access list for inbound and a similar access list for outbound). This access list would not necessarily deny anything. But it would have permit statements for the particular tcp ports that you are interested in and a permit any at the bottom. This way the access list would count packets for the TCP (or UDP) port.
    An example would be this:
    ip access-list extended count_in
    remark count tcp packets inbound
    permit tcp any any eq 23
    permit tcp any any eq 80
    permit tcp any eq 23 any
    permit tcp any eq 80 any
    permit any any
    ip access-list extended count_out
    remark count tcp packets outbound

    permit tcp any eq 23 any

    ip access-group count_in in

    then show access-list count_in and show access-list count_out would show the number of hits for each line and you would have packet counts for your specific TCP ports.

    I use Acrobat text highlighting all the time. It continues to work correctly in XI 11.0.09, but is now failing on 11.0.10 Any solution for this?

  • Mail Sounds Too Loud

    Since upgrading to Leopard I notice that my Mail notification sounds all of a sudden are very loud in comparison to the ordinary alert sounds and other audio. Has anyone else noticed that? Solution? Resetting the alert sounds in System Preferences do
