Tecra 8100 CPU speed 450 Mhz?

XP professional sp2 clean install
Power saver: Full power, Processor speed: Full
BIOS 2.50 set up to Full power
Speed measured with: EVEREST Home Edition and Intel(R) Processor Frequency ID Utility Release 7.2
How to install XP on this comp to run in full speed?

Hi
Like Jaba said try to check the BIOS options.
Furthermore as far as I know if the mainboard was replaced and no diagnostic test was executed so the CPU runs only with a 600Mhz speed. Well Im not sure if it is a same issue with your unit but its not wrong to check this possibility.

  • Tecra 8100 CPU upgrade???

    Hi,
what is the maximum CPU to install? And what Socket? Is it microPGA2 Socket and PIII 850 Mhz (100Mhz Busspeed) or what is the fastest CPU to use within the Tecra8100?

    Dear littlco,
probably this forum should be here to help people, but it isn't. I've read many topics here, and there always is a person who says "contact toshiba support". If a person doesn't know the answer, he shouldn't post a reply. And the cost of new CPU in EU is about 20 euro (talking about PIII 800 or similar) so it is much cheaper than buing a new notebook. And remember that following advertisements and buing new, high-end machines not always fits a customer needs. That's about the venting.
And to answer mrxmrx: Toshiba Tecra 8100 uses a microPGA2 socket. I can't tell you for sure what is the highest CPU it can use (somebody found such information yet), but it can depend on a BIOS version your machine has. I think it should run the CPU about 200MHz over the manufacturer's specifications, but the only way to check it out is to go to some nice store with used parts and ask the seller there to make some tests using various CPUs. That is what I did to learn that my SP 4270 can run with PIII 700 (instead the default Celeron 500).
    I wish you luck.

  • Tecra 8100 CPU gets too hot

Well, some could remember my previous post about fan activation in my Tecra 8100.
This notebook came to me as a gift by a customer, because screen didn't work. After a bit of research, the problem was the internal cold cathode, that was broken. Once replaced: yup! a free notebook for me!! It was a Pentium III 650 Mobile, with 64MB of RAM and a 12GB hard disk. I replaced all those componentes (that are now for sale, btw) and it now has a Pentium III 850 Mobile, 512MB of RAM and a 40GB hard disk. Some one gave me a PCMCIA 11Mbps WiFi card, and now how it is working, with Windows XP Professional and updated Toshiba utilities and drivers downloaded from Toshiba USA.
What's the buzz? SpeedFan, Motherboard Monitor and other monitoring utilities reports temperatures of up to 72?ºC in the CPU. I opened the notebook and put thermal paste instead of the sticker the heatsink has. Temperature keeps high, and Toshiba Utilities even at "high performance cooling" settings doesn't make the fan cool the cpu...
I have not hangs at all, but notebook case and pcmcia cards get too hot even with the system working with no apps running. Lowering the CPU clock or ratio doesn't help at all.
I'm thinking of putting an extra fan somewhere to force air flow and that way cool the cpu, unless that...
...Toshiba could develop an utility that allows to directly control fan speed. I don't know if thermal management is hardware or software driven. If it's software driven, it should be easy to create a utility that access directly to fan and temperature registers. That would be MUCH better that simply let the computer decide when and how long to activate the fan.
I'm sure that Toshiba engineers are busy with more important things that will not allow them to create the utility for us, so...
...what to check or do to cool down the CPU to more appropiate values?
    Thanks all!

    Hi
Like in you previous posting described the Toshiba power saver controls the CPU and fan usage.
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=12585
This software works great and if you use the notebook as prescribed, you shouldn't get any problems and overheating issues.
The problem is that you have changed all devices and parts on you notebook. The new parts are efficient but produce more warmness.
On the notebook you can cool the CPU with one little fan and if it doesn't last out, it's necessary to decrease the CPU performance.
This is a simple fact. All these functions can be set with power saver.
Furthermore it's very important that your cooling module is clear and no dust and debris handicap the fan working.

You cannot upgrade to snow leopard. Snow leopard was the first of os x to drop support for the motorola ppc processors. The latest you could possibly run would be leopard.

  • 450 MHz G4 Approaching the end of its Line... or Not?

450 MHz is not fast by any stretch I know, but for 5 years this machine has served me well and been 100% reliable. My G4 Cube is stock except for a 120GB HD, maxxed out RAM and Panther 10.3.9. Some common Photoshop chores on my very large files (200 to 700MB) do require a wait but it has never been unbearable. That is to say, while waiting, I could jump to another app or 2 and do something while photoshop did it's job. The extra RAM has certainly kept my machine useful and snappy in this regard. But yesterday is seems I finally hit the wall.
I was trying to run a DVD training video (via external firewire drive) and installed training app while following along in the application I want to learn. The video displays fine on its own but once I try to run all 3 items (the video, training app and the app. I'm learning) everything just slows down terribly. For instance toggling between an app dialog box and the video takes measureable time... i'm talking 10-15 seconds. Opening a pallet, causes it to disappear for a moment. Sometimes, the video instructs you to open a 4th app. Doing so takes over a minute just to get the app up not to mention loading the dialog box (another 20 seconds) and grabbing the file you need file... another 20+ seconds.
The training app suggests a 1.0 GHz processor but minumum required is 450MHz and if I recall correctly, when I installed I saw 16MB VRAM required... right where I'm at with a stock Cube.
Sounds like a no brainer... the computer is too slow. BUT WAIT... this is where I could really use some advice.
In the interest of keeping my system clean from unnecessary programs I opted to load both the Application and Training App onto one of my EXTERNAL FIREWIRE HDs which contains OS 10.3.9. I reasoned that the training app would not need to be a permanent installation so why clutter my main system. Up 'til now whenever I've booted from this external disc (which is pretty often), I really sense no loss in speed or performance of the system even when working in apps like photoshop. The firewire bus seems as fast as the installed ATA HD in real world uses. So, in the situation I just described both my firewire ports are busy.. one with an external system HD and the 2nd with the optical drive.
Could the bottlenecking be the result of running off 2 firewires rather than the internal drives?
Or could it be the marginal amount VRAM?
Or is the stock processor just too slow to handle my need?
Activity monitor shows CPU user usage in the upper 80s to mid 90s with the 3 programs running and just one user logged in.
This computer has a 100MHz system bus and I think 66MBps data bus.
BTW, I do perform regular maintenance on both my imac and cube. Each run flawlessly and most certainly would meet their bechmarks. I repair permissions before and after any installation, rebuild the directories every month, empty caches etc.

    I think
you would enjoy a faster processor but the Cube is so
limited in so many ways that I would consider a used
G-4 tower and upgrade it. The towers provide so much
more opportunities. I have added a usb 2.0 card and a
sata card to mine as well as the Sonnet and 2 gigs of
    ram. Tom
You're absolutely right... the Cube is limited. Not just in expandability but cooling and everytime I've looked at processor upgrades, I shy away because
I don't want to hack the case and of course a meltdown is not on my wishlist either. Plenty have upgraded cubes with DP, big video cards etc. For me, I've always considered the risk and the fact that I can never get USB 2.0... researched that one a year ago and no dice. If only I could talk my dad into parting with his G4 quicksilver. He uses his PCs for work duties and the mac basically sits there to go online because he doesn't want to invest in software for it.

  • T22 CPU Speed Change Automatically in Windows XP

    Dear All,
I am using IBM Thinkpad T22 Type 2647, I am facing problem of CPU speed. My Actuall CPU is 900 Mhz, but it changes automatically to 400, 450, upto 896Mhz. Every time i start my laptop it shows different Mhz in the XP. In BIOS it remains constant 900Mhz. I Reinstall Windows XP Home Edition but problem remains. Kindly Guide me in this regards, I will be very thankfull to you all pplz.
    Thanks & Regads,
    Suleman Khalil

    Welcome to the forum!
Your T22 is behaving normally, what you're seeing is SpeedStep in action. This can be disabled in BIOS under power management.
    Hope this helps.

  • Overclocking question on dual G4 450 Mhz Mystic

(I originally posted this under "using" instead of "expanding" your Power Mac G4...hopefully the right people see this now)
Recently I became interested in overclocking my computers. I have owned a Gigabit Ethernet Dual G4 450 Mhz "Mystic" for about a year, until about a week ago I decided to overclock it. Two weeks ago I bought an old 500 Mhz (66 Mhz bus) G3 iBook and successfully overclocked it to a 600 Mhz (with 100 Mhz Bus). I am certified in solder repair by PACE so this stuff is pretty easy...
My question is about the Mystic. I went online searching for info on how to overclock it. I found that everyone running Dual 450's successfully overclocked to Dual 500's. So I changed the jumper layout to a 5x multiplier setting, and that was it, I had a dual 500 Mhz Mystic. After reading more, I really didn't find any more information about anyone trying to clock higher than 500 Mhz, although their jumper tables showed it could be achieved. All anyone really said was that trying to go higher than a 50 Mhz speed boost would be unreliable.
And that's where my question comes in. About 3-4 days ago I decided to attempt to overclock to Dual 550 Mhz. Which I performed successfully. My computer is still running fine after vigorous testing, such as running some intensive testing with techtool (which also confirmed my 550 Mhz clockspeed), while running about 10 other programs. I ran Adobe Photoshop, iTunes, iPhoto, iChat, Safari...basically all the programs in my dock simultaneously for a few hours. I also ran Halo on highest graphics setting for a few hours, and The Sims and some other games just to see. And so far, so good. My computer seems much faster and I have not noticed anything unusual. It runs so nicely and my system is well kept, I clean out caches and temp files almost every week and defrag constantly with norton. So...
Do I have anything to worry about? Is there any reason why I shouldn't keep this setting if it is working correctly for me already? Also, is there any reason why I shouldn't test a higher setting, such as Dual 600 Mhz? Has anyone ever tried overclocking to a speed this high?
Another thing, if the reason people don't overclock to 550-600 is due to temperature, is it possible to achieve this setting by installing another fan to keep the processors cool? I am just surprised that I haven't found anyone who has ever tried overclocking higher than 500 Mhz.
If anyone has any information, please let me know.
Also here are some specs on my computer:
    Origially Dual 450 Mhz G4
    1.5 GB Ram (two 512 mb PC100, two 256 mb PC100)
    30 GB Quantum HD
    10 GB Quantum HD
    180 GB IBM HD
    150 External Firewire HD
    Pioneer DVD/CD Burner
ATI RAGE 128 (Been meaning to upgrade this...)
Digidesign MBOX 2 (External USB Audio)

The person on eBay (sngaporemac) was selling 933MHz upclocked 733MHz G4 CPU modules. I actually purchased one from him almost two years ago, to sort of test out so to speak (I am no stranger to overclocking). Although his elaborate and custom heatsink design utilised a heatpipe configuration, when I threw a solid RC5-72 ( http://www.distributed.net ) load to it, the computer would lock up within fifteen minutes. My solution (although a LOUD one) involved upgrading the Digital Audio fan, but that did not wind up being a long-term solution, so I ended up selling it.
Quicksilver G4 CPU modules can be used in Digital Audio Powermacs and earlier, as long as the 5th “power provision post” on the CPU module has +12V wired to it, and the motherboard revision is Uni-7 or greater for multiple CPUs: http://homepage.mac.com/leopoldporkstacker/.Pictures/overclock/tsunamimac/index. html
    and
    http://homepage.mac.com/leopoldporkstacker/.Pictures/overclock/qs_da1.jpg
Meanwhile, I have two MDD “Quadnostril” Powermacs running dual 1.25GHz 7455A CPU modules in them overclocked to 1.42GHz at the stock voltage. Of course, there are a few tricks to getting them running just right, involving full-flow case modifications:

    http://homepage.mac.com/leopoldporkstacker/.Pictures/overclock/hack3.jpg
    http://homepage.mac.com/leopoldporkstacker/.Pictures/overclock/justatad.jpg
I am no stranger to overclocking. It can be done, but (a) there goes the warranty, (b) there goes lots and lots of time experimenting, (c) your wife will hate you, and (d) shouldn’t you be having a beer with your mates?

  • Tecra 8100 problem after BIOS update

    Greetings
    I have a tecra 8100, 700 mhz with 256RAM,
and it works a treat, until I decided to update the BIOS, the date of the previous version was 1999!
As I run a linux OS on this device I downloaded the a boot image of the current Bios version and loaded it at boot, it reported update success.
My problem now is the system boots fine but runs exceedingly slow,
it takes 15 minutes to boot, and is virtually unusable.
I have run many tests for benchmarking and memory tests from Hiram's boot CD and the only problem to report was my 700 CPU is running at 114.82. And of couse running, the CPU is running at 100%.
I have cleared the cmos data and restarted using default BIOS settings.
Searched extensively on the net, and cannot find an answer.
    Please help.
    cheers Munka

    Hi
I have visited the Toshiba European driver page and found the newest BIOS version which is 2.50-WIN.
    Do you use this?
This BIOS can be updated only running windows OS! Therefore Im very surprised that you were able to update the BIOS running the Linux OS on this machine.
Try to download the newest BIOS version and update it like described on the BIOS update help page.

  • Tecra 8100 - no sound output except from mic!

I have a Tecra 8100 running Windows XP.
I can get no sound out of the speakers or headphones outputted from the computer, e.g. beep sounds, CD, etc. But if I un-mute the mic, I can hear through the headphones what the microphone picks up (there's just feedback without microphones, proving the speakers physically work). All the volume controls are on maximum and unmuted. All the devices are enabled and chosen correctly in the sound control panels.
Any help at all would be welcome!! Is it the sound card, or am I missing a driver? can't find anything else on the web with similar symptoms. Thanks in advance.

    Hello
Thats a good questions and I never heard about such an issue...
I think at fist you should start to update the sound driver of your notebook. Therefore you can look on the Toshiba website for an update:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Before you install the newest version, you should remove the old version first and restart the notebook.
Maybe a reinstallation of Windows with the Toshiba recovery disk could be also useful and in worst case its a hardware malfunction and you have to exchange the mainboard. :(

  • CPU speed MSI GX620

I have a MSI GX620 as you can see in the title, I installed CPU-Z to read my CPU speed, multiplier etc.
It has a P7350 processor, that should do at least 2 GHz, though when i check it at CPU-z it says i have a speed of 1850 MHz with a multiplier of 6, this all is with the turbo button on.
Before I've had a reading of 2.3 GHz with 7.5 multiplier, that is more like the way i want it, how do i get my CPU to work faster? When I'm playing a game it's at 100% CPU usage but my laptop won't push the multiplier to 7.5 for better results.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Your CPU is in "standby" mode when you are not doing anything, therefore it underclocks itself. When you play your games, it goes back to its full clock speed. If your CPU is always 100% when gaming it is because the CPU is not able to keep up with the game . Remember, a laptop always has alot less performance than a desktop computer.

  • Performance - Threads - Sys Resources = What's the CPU Speed n RAM ?

    Hi all,
I am writing a small program based on quick port scanning (pure Java). For that purpose I'm using threads to make the connections. I am using multiple threads in parallel. While running 64 threads theres a 10% CPU usage whereas on 128 threads theres a 60% usage (On AMD 500 Mhz).
Now obviously I dont want anybody with a 233 Mhz running my program with 128 threads and surely not the one with 1 Ghz being limited to only 128 threads. Thats why I need to find out the clients resources like CPU speed, total RAM etc. How do I do that ?
Someone suggested using JNDI for windows registry. I'm not sure how to do it that way. (if anyone can provide me a little code?) Is there another way round to this problem?
    Any help appreciated.

    My friend
please try to understand the problem here is not of OPTIMIZATION OF THREAD SERVICES but the OPTIMAL NUMBER OF THREADS TO BE USED at certain processor speeds.
fine I agree about different performances of processors (pentium 1Ghz != AMD 1Ghz)
    but surely (pentium 1Ghz ~ AMD 1Ghz ~ other 1Ghz).
and anyway in my program I'm taking the performance margins by 200Mhz to be on the safer side
    i.e.
x1-x2 no of threads for say 300-500Mhz,
y1-y2 no of threads for 500-700Mhz,
z1-z2 no of threads for 700-1Ghz. Get the point.?
Heres an incomplete example of my prog (if now anyone can make out a fair idea of the problem) :
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;

  • CPU Speed discrepancy, BIOS problems

My Win7 PC started showing weird behavior a few days ago. Slow performance in all Windows apps, bootup process was slower, monitor cycled through options trying to find the video channel, (HDMI 1) and failing, DVD Rom drive clicking as if trying to find a disc, and (yesterday) failing to boot at all. I cleared CMOS and loaded Optimized Defaults. When Windows started (much faster than before) several icons were missing from the system tray including firewall, Nvidia manager, and network, although they were apparently working. I rebooted again and performance was great, all seemed fine. AMD Overdrive listed my 965 Quad Core at 3000 MHz, each core speed at roughly the same speed. This morning my PC was slow again. AMD OD showed CPU Target speed at 3000 but with each core at a current speed of only 800 Mhz with NB voltage reading (in red) at 1.40. My next plan of attack is to Unplug-N-Play the OS setting in BIOS, uninstall all overclocking software and try again. Having said that I could use some feedback. Have you heard of any scenario like this before and do you have any guidance for me?  I use MSE for AV, MBAM and both show no infection. My system specs are below. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Start with unplugging your PSU from A/C power to properly >>Clear CMOS<<.  Then test with one memory module only and load "Optimized Defaults" in BIOS Setup upon restart.

What BIOS Version are you currently using?
What PSU (brand/model name/detailed specifications) are you using?

  • Cpu speed and ilife08 - help needed

help...tried installing ilife 08 on my powerbook g4, however can not install i-movie. may be that this requires intel cpu...currently system spec is Model Name: PowerBook G4 17"
    Model Identifier: PowerBook5,5
    Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
    Processor Speed: 1.5 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.8.4f1
....does this mean i dont have an intel cpu...if so, can i upgrade...and any ideas on how.
    cheers

According to the iLife '08 system requirements:
"iMovie requires a Mac with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster). "
When I installed iLife '08 on my PBG4 1.67GHz it told me that iMovie would not install. It did however, take me to the web to download the previous version for free.

  • Upgrading Power Mac G4, dual 450 Mhz, to use Logic Express 8

I am actually confessing to being a windows studying pc engineer, but am also interested in macs.
My sister has just purchased the G4, 450 Mhz, (dual) i am confused on a few things and am trying to help her!
    Basically can anyone help?
The problem is, does dual mean, that there's two processors (i am going to open it later when shes home from work and actually look!) and also, the 450 mhz, is dual, so is that 450 x 2 or just 450? I have looked about this site, and have noticed there is not much room to up the processor speed, but the goal is to get her processor speed up to a minimum of 1.25 Ghz.
Also, she wants to create her own music on a small budget, so cannot afford Logic Pro 7, it is installed on her machine but she has no key? (the guy she bought it from didnt say it needed one!)
So she now purchased Logic Express 8, but when trying to use it, the message is saying to the effect of not large enough processor speed. She has installed it on top of Logic 7, so both are now on there, will that matter?
Is the processor slot the same for the larger Mhz upgrades? if so, which are the best processors to use?
We have all the ram, she bought 1.5 GB, and large hdds, it is just this problem now, and she was in tears last night, due to the fact, every time she asks someone, she gets one step closer, gets hopeful, to find another hitch!
I am really sure i can get it workable for her, but need some apple expertise guys, sorry i know you dont appreciate windows users much, and i would own a mac, just when i can afford one!
    All help much appreciated.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Sounds like you are dealing with a Gigabit Ethernet model of G4, equipped with dual 450mhz processors. It was a monster in it's day, and still has good use left in it. Problem is, 450mhz, even dual, isn't much by current software requirements.

As for Logic- version 7 would be usable on the machine as is. There is no problem with installing version 8 on the same system. It would be nice for her to be able to get the proper "key" to be able to use v.7. It would definitely be worth pursuing the issue with the seller.
And, as you know, to use v.8, you need more processor. Processors are a relatively easy upgrade. There are many options available, as well. One of the best buys (performance for the money) are 7455 based single processor upgrades from OWC or Fastmac:

The following are all compatible with the dual 450 G4:

  • CPU Speed VS Heating problem

I had the firmware upgrade on my 2.16 MBP and it has performed very well, the CPU speed cuts back and usually runs at 1333 mHz and the CPU temp runs about 50 to 60 degrees C. Recently it began running at 2167 100% of the time and, of course, the CPU temp is running in the 80 degree C region.
Same apps being used, no new software installed. What gives? I certainly would like to have it return to the older cooler running mode.
Thanks for any assistance or suggestions.

No viable options to date although you may want to keep this in mind. Apple has made changes to the firmware and system management control so that you may safely utilize the performance you paid for. You may not notice it now although when Leopard is released, you may appreciate the maximum performance of your Mac with the current updates, as it is now able to run the more robust and demanding operating system of the future.
