Tell me the secret to sharp edges.

Hi guys,
How do i get a sharp edge each and every time.  I am using the rounded rectangle tool to draw some tabs.  At one time it gives me sharp edges and some other time the edges are blurred.  An example HERE
Why is that so.  What is the secret to sharp edges all the time.
Thanks for your response.

Please read through the thread linked just below. The answers posted by Buko and Zeno are on the mark, but I took a little more time explaining what's causing the fuzzy borders you're seeing and why the "Snap To Pixels" option fixes it.

It is pretty simple actually. I usually use free tools, including simple custom profiling code using System.currentTimeMillis(), and the free "hprof" heap profiler that comes with the JDK.
To run hprof, you invoke java with the -Xrunhprof parameter, in this manner:
    java -Xrunhprof:cpu=samples,depth=5 -classpath (...)
my.package.MyProgramand it writes the report out to a test file when your program exits. (By default, java.hprof.txt, but see the output from java -Xrunhprof:help for how to send it somewhere else.)
To make use of the profiling data, go to the end of the file, and you will see the different stack traces and how much time they took of the total execution time.
You will want to start at the top, at the traces with the highest percentages. Now each trace has a TRACE NUMBER. So you use the summary at the end, with the percentages, to tell you which trace you're interested in.
Then go up and you will find the traces. I usually search for "TRACE: xxx" in my editor to find the one I'm looking for.
Hope this helps get you started.
    Cheers,
    Colin

  • What are the secrets to sharp fonts in Elements 4.0?

    Hello,
I am searching for tips and tricks on how to render sharper and more elegant fonts in Elements. I always select anti aliasing but somehow it never looks as finished as when I use a publishing program like Quark, for instance. I am hoping there is some hidden potential in Elements 4 that I haven't discovered yet :-)

Th emain thing is to pay attention to th esize/resolution of the PSE document. 300ppi is a good number to think in terms of. Any fuzziness comes about when a text layer is "simplified" to pixels. The more pixels you have, the cleaner the edges will be. It's not a question of "hidden potential" - it isn't hidden at all. It is just a matter of appreciating the process.

  • Sharp edges on the mac book

I have owned 10+ macs and i am disappointed that my new mac book is giving me deep red marks from the sharp edges. Any suggestions on adding an accessory to stop by red, painful marks?

Grade of sandpaper? Heck, I dunno. I just grabbed what I had at the house. Pretty fine grade, though.
How much did I remove? I don't know that either. I just kept at until it felt smooth. Don't make it difficult. You just use common sense. You won't even see the difference, you FEEL the difference.
    For that reason, no photos.

  • Sharp edges on MacBook Pro

What chances are there of Apple changing it's sharp edge design on future Mac Book Pros? I've just returned a 13" MacBook Pro because the front edges are so sharp they left red marks on the the sides of my hands hurt after 2 hours of typing with the laptop on my lap. I know it's probably not the case if on table, but I often need to have my laptop in lap! (Which is what it's designed to do) - as I travel a lot with it. I'm a devoted Mac user - just love them - and I'm hugely disappointed by this but i't just not comfortable. I've just got a refund and will carry on with my original 1st Generation MacBook Pro (which is a great machine (lacking the specs of course) and very comfortable to use - until Mac come out with a kinder-on-the-wrists version. My partner's just got one and has the same issue and will return it. We're just hoping Mac will alter this at some point with upcoming models.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There have been numerous complaints about the sharp edges, and the best thing to do is to give feedback to Apple as sig suggests.
There is something known as a computer glove that might help should you need a new Mac before Apple gets around to changing the design.

Office Depot carries these if you want to look at one in person.
    Good luck!

  • Solution for sharp edges on Retina MacBook Pro

The sharp edges on the front of my new Retina MacBook Pro (late 2013) drove me crazy cutting into my wrists.
My solution is two pieces of self sticking velcro - the loop kind of velcro which is soft. Apply them across the top and down the front edge on either side of the trackpad all the way out to the side edges. They are not too thick so as to prevent sleep when closing the cover. They don't look too bad either. I'd say they match the black keys on the keyboad.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process (Finder) in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

If I paste the jpeg on a draw page and shrink it to fit, fuzzy print. If I create the text directly on a draw page, it's fine. (That suggests to me the problem isn't in the printer.) But I want to include a small drawing on the card, and the pasted jpeg of that small drawing is very poor quality.

  • Settings...what is the secret

i have had a heck of a time generating HD clips that will play in QT on my own computer without "staggering,"
i can down load an HD movie trailer from apple (armored) that is bigger (1920x912 vs 1780x720), in millions and at 24 fps (mine is 30). the trailer plays, as far as i can tell, flawlessly. both in H.264.
what is the secret? what are they doing that i am not?

tom, that is what i think too, but darned if i can figure out what. spent about two hours on the phone with FCE product specialists at Apple that last two days, and they weren't ready to guarantee clean running. one suspected underperforming hard drives. what really distresses me is that i can see some of this staggering inside of FCE where it shouldn't happen.
i took an exported clip to another machine at a local connecting point store and the staggering still happened, suggesting that it was embedded in the clip somehow. i can scrub the clip in QT using the right arrow key held down and all the frames appear to be there, but when running, every approximately four seconds, it staggers.
i created a separate boot drive with a fresh install of leopard and put only my video card drivers and FCE on it. disconnected everything except the firewire to the camcorder and the USB for the keyboard to try to isolate the environment. it still happened. before i even put the video drivers in, i played the exported clip. every four seconds i got a horizontal distortion that moved from the bottom of the clip to the top. after i installed the video drivers, this became the stagger.
tomorrow i am going to a retail store with my camcorder to capture the same clip there and see if there is any difference. i don't believe it is the camera as i can hook it up with HDMI to a HDTV and it plays fine. i suppose there could be a firewire problem in the camcorder.
    i am stumped and frustrated.

  • Help for Sharp Edges

Yesterday afternoon, I went to the Apple Store to try the new Macbook.
The screen is gorgeous, crisp, colorful and clear and a vastly welcomed improvement to the iBook's pale and difficult to read screen. Adjusting brightness levels may help reduce any glare or eyestrain problems.
The keyboard, with its reduced padding, feels like it was designed for stylish looks and not especially for long-term comfort. A workaround might be to reduce typing pressure and also to add an external keyboard for home use.
The palm rests are another story. They're an ergonomic catastrophe. The edges of the Macbook are so sharp that using the trackpad for a short while quickly induced pain in my hand.
Can anyone suggest ways to reduce edge pressure and sharpness and make an otherwise great laptop less ergonomically lethal to my palm and wrist? Thank you.

I understand what you're saying. However, from an ergonomic standpoint, it really is not good for you to rest youre palms on the 'palmrests' at all. The best thing you can do for your wrists and the tendons and musculature of your hands is to have straight, neutral wrists so that your fingers fall down on the keys from your knuckles onward while you type. Also, rather than rest your palms on the palmrest when you use the trackpad, try moving your whole arm from the shoulder. I also suspect that your table is too high since the edge is cutting into your wrists.
Resting your hands on the palmrests or using a laptop on a table that is too high is recipe for RSI in the long-term. So maybe the sharp edges may be a blessing in disguise! Seriously, I've learned the hard way.

  • Sharp edges on iPhone

I noticed the polished aluminum overlaps the brushed aluminum on the right side of my iPhone. It had not been an issue till I dropped my iPhone on my MacBook Pro and SCRATCHED the aluminum casing on my Macbook Pro. Has anyone else noticed sharp edges or should I take this into the Apple store.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   IPhone

That sounds like a manufacturing defect. I can catch the groove between the polished and brushed surfaces with my fingernail - but just barely. It's a very well-matched joint.

  • Sharp edges

    Hi,
I've used my PB 15" DL since November and have worked out most of the software problems I've had but here is something I wonder what people think of: There are some almost sharp edges on this machine (and probably others of the same design). In particular, if you press the delete key so that your finger is on the edge towards the right, you feel the almost sharp edge of the top plate brush against your finger. This same thing happens with almost any key as well. Try the keys on the left and you'll see the same thing.
The trackpad. Its edges are smooth but borderline sharp. The clicker has a sharp edge on my machine on its left side.
How about the hinge for the screen?! Quite sharp.
How about the hole where the latch for the screen goes in? Sharp. (And that's not even counting the two pointy things on either side of the top of the screen and the latch itself.)
Some keys don't respond as smoothly as others, I get the overall impression that while this is a very stylish machine, some corners were cut and the end result is not as "polished", literally, as it should be.
One other place that is disappointing: The battery compartment door. It isn't flush, it jiggles when you poke your finger at it and the worst part is the gasket that runs around it is already starting to fall apart! The compartment door has that same sharp edge that you can find all over this machine.
I tend to rub my fingers in these places to sort of temp them to hurt me or to dull them but they shouldn't exist at all. Bad design I'd say. (And there should be, maybe there is, a thread on the illegibility of the keyboard letters and the symbols on the sides. Grey letters/symbols on a grey case are hard to read. It's beautiful but a case of bad design winning over functionality.)
    Cheers,
    John L

I had the keyboard replaced a little while ago (to try to fix another problem mentioned in this thread, amongst others: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=584197&tstart=0) and I now realize that typing is so much easier without having to notice (worry about) the sharp edges.
It is a whole new experience for me on this machine. I had used my Powerbook Firewire for a little while while the new one was being repaired and I was going to say that keyboard felt so much more comfortable, responsive but now this one is better so I have no complaint anymore.
I was serious by the way. You all were no help with your sarcastic replies.
    Cheers,
    John L

  • Ipod Touch 2nd generation Sharp edges on bottom

    Hi all,
I love, love my 2nd generation ipod touch. As recent college graduate I used it everyday and everywhere. My question is... has anyone else experienced sharp edges alongside the bottom of the dock charger? When I constantly hold the ipod touch in my right hand, vertically, my right hand pinky finger constantly gets rubbed up against the dock charger underneath the bottom of the ipod touch. It has always been an issue, but I am not one to complain.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
    Thanks.

    Not Charge
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • When can I purchase the season pass for "The Secret Millionaire" Seasons 1 and 2??

I purchased the Season Pass for "The Secret Millionaire-season 3". I want to purchase the passes for seasons 1 and 2. Tell me why those first 2 seasons are not available for purchase??
Is ABC not giving you the rights to buy those seasons??
I see every TV show has multiple seasons. This not right.
I am sure that there are more individuals like me who want to watch quality TV shows.
    Brian

We are all just fellow users here and have no more idea than you do why any given item is not available. It's almost certainly an issue of rights, since the iTunes Store can sell only what they can license, but why ABC cannot or will not grant the rights is something no one here will know.
