Terminal Command to Re-Mount an Unmounted Local Disk Partition?

Hello,
Does anyone know a terminal command (or applescript command) to re-mount an unmounted local disk partition? I know it can be done using the DiskUtility, but I would like to do it from the Terminal without launching another program.
Using Tiger 10.4.5 on a G5
Thanks,
Tom
G5 2.3 MHz dual core   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi Tom,
AppleScript will execute anything that you can exectute from the command line that isn't interactive but it won't execute it in the same way. By that I mean that the environment will be more vanilla. In this case the problem is that the path is rather basic. All you have to do is to use an absolute path to the script and it should work. Apple has a pretty good reference for the mechanism, Technical Note TN2065: do shell script in AppleScript.
Is wakeonlan basically the same thing as waking upon receipt of a "magic packet"? I think you can easily make Mac OS X do that by itself. Just open System Preferences and the "Options" tab of the "Energy Saver" pane. Check the checkbox beside "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access".

I need help, How could I add Aliases to Local Administrator account via terminal commands???
I want to use commands to add alias for existing administrator account remotly by using ARD.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
a Windows Domain Controller does not have any local user or groups. So you might add the user to the admin group at Domain level.

  • Strange terminal command caching while manually running SWUPD.

I've built dozens of software update servers with little issues. This one has me stumped today.
I built a software update server to update solely our Tiger machines. Initially, I had sent a command to the clients that hit the wrong IP address. Once I realized the mistake, I overwrote the plist files on them to reflect the correct address.
Problem is, some of those machines, even tho I have thrown out the plist completely, still seem to be trying to update with the wrong address. I have verified 100 times that the plist is correct. And if I do a softwareupdate -l, it hits the correct address. When I send a softwareupdate -i -a, it gives me this error:
    2010-06-29 13:50:50.606 softwareupdate[728] Loading CatalogURL 10.192.170.11:8088
    2010-06-29 13:50:50.625 softwareupdate[728] loader:didFailWithError:NSError "unsupported URL" Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1002 UserInfo={
    NSErrorFailingURLKey = 10.192.170.11:8088;
    NSErrorFailingURLStringKey = "10.192.170.11:8088";
    NSLocalizedDescription = "unsupported URL";
    Error: unsupported URL
    Software Update Tool
The IP address it's reflecting is the original bad address. I'm thinking this has to be cached somewhere, but I've tried it via ARD on fresh machines that had never tried to push any of these commands, and I get the same thing.
I verified that this happens locally in the terminal and via ARD. But if you manually run the software update from the GUI, it goes to the right place and updates fine.

No, this is a Tiger server, updating Tiger clients. We literally update the plist via command line or ARD, and then run the softwareupdate -i -a command.
I have deleted all profile softwareupdate plists via root. It worked on one machine, but not the others. What's odd is that even if i run the software update command locally in the terminal, I still get this error, but if I run it from the Apple menu, it hits the right server and works just fine. So the plist is correct. So I'm wondering what's the difference between where the GUI grabs the address from, and where the terminal command gets it.

  • #30 | can i run the Terminal Command to stop Snapshots with no problems?

i am somewhat surprised to find out that the 75 GB of "Backups" that are taking up space on my MBP may be due to some "feature" in Mavericks or the new OS's or whatever and i have had to MOVE all my data off my laptop as a consequence of this over the last two months because i have no more space on my Hard Drive.
is it legit and OK to follow the terminal commands in #30 without having any problems?
i am on a mid 2009 MBP running Mavericks and i have a 2 TB Time Capsule that i am wirelessly backing up my data.
as some kind of sadistic test in advance of running this terminal command - can i plug my laptop into the Time Capsule, unplug the laptop from the time capsule, restart and see how much space got recaptured on my HD for my data?
i mean, well - i must be missing something but i mean i am hoping i can get this to stop so i can get my data back on my laptop. i'm walking around with an external HD of all my Mac Pro information just so i can get work done when i go to a coffee shop or something.

    for those suffering through this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24878591#24878591
    In Terminal:
         sudo tmutil disablelocal
Turn off local Time Machine snapshots and trigger automatic cleanup of accumulated local snapshot data. Requires root privileges.
(use sudo tmutil enablelocal to turn back on)
this got rid of my 75 GB backup file (!!) and now i am going to move my data back to my laptop...
not sure if there is an apple tech article to link to regarding this issue but it would be good to post if there is one.

  • Using Applescript to execute a Terminal command

I've looked at the possible answers that come up when I ask this question here, but none really fit my question.
I want to automate the Terminal command that cleans out obsolete entries in my right-click "Open with" menu, which I have to do often. Rather than copying the command each time I want it, then opening Terminal, pasting it in, etc., is there a way to automate this with Applescript?  Thanks!

Thanks for the fast reply, Niel. I understand this is a newbie Applescript question, but over the years I have just never used Applescript and other than this one thing, probably won't again.  So rather than take hours to learn it, I hope you don't mind the additional question regarding this.  Do I just put the following into the main Applescript editor?
do shell script "ls -l ~"
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework//Versions/A/\
    Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister \
    -kill -r -domain local -domain user;
    killall Finder

  • Multiple entries in 'Open Width'using the above terminal command

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
I tried using the above terminal command to reset launch services but it does not seem to work. I still have multiple entries. What am I doing wrong?

You may have to clarify. Multiple entries in Open With can be normal. For example if you have multiple versions of an application for whatever reason, they will all show. Plus, any applications that report being able to open a file type will show (had an annoyingly long list for text files on my old machine as some apps that didn't even handle documents such as games reported being able to open them).

  • Terminal Command to Start ScreenSaver (or Lock Screen)

Is there any way to start the ScreenSaver with a Terminal command?
The curtain mode is great, but if one connects to a computer with locked screensaver, I cannot figure how to reset the screensaver (or screen locking) before closing the connection. Otherwise the computer is locally accessible until the autostart of the screensaver...

    open '/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.a pp'
defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver idleTime 180
will set the screensaver startup idletime to 3 minutes
you can read the current settings by issuing
    defaults -currentHost read com.apple.screensaver
defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver idleTime 0
    is for never activate.
i've tried using 1 and it doesn't come on right away. the fastest i can get it to start is with 60 (60 secs)

  • What are all the 'Terminal' Commands?

I use Terminal for fun with the commands and the killall argument command but i really want to know all the terminal commands so that i am not that bored. I always use the commands i know but they are getting old so please help.
    PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks,
    Andrew.

The commands are be scattered around the hd.  A command is any file with the execution bit set on.
The best way to go is to go to your local library and find any book on unix or bash.  There will be some difference between what you read and what is available in X.  the man command should key you in on the differences.
A book on Bash would be helpful.
Here is the book that I use:
Mac OS X Tiger in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))
This is also good & was in my local library.

    Apple Shell Scripting Primer

Check you local library. Any book on Bash syntax will do. There will be minor differences but they will not be great.

  • Terminal command, when in system install disc

I was wondering if anyone could clue me in to a terminal command for when I am booting off the System disc, and need to get to the root on my HardDrive, or home folder

OK, if the drive isn't mounted then mount it with /sbin/mount -uaw or use Disk Utility in the menu to mount it, then look for /Volumes in Terminal.
Sorry, can't reboot off the Install disk to garner the exact commands, but it sounds like you may just need an inkling anyway!

  • Mount and unmount network drives

    Hello,
I am trying to create an automated script to first unmount the network drives and then mount them to ensure no duplicates are created.  I'm not much of a scripter but i found that you can use the following command to properly mount the drive
    mount "smb://username:password@server/share"
and it mounts it just fine, the issue is... I can't get the unmount portion to work.
    Can anyone shed some light?
    THANK YOU!!!

    I just tried doing:
    sudo unmount "smb://blahblahbalbh"
it throws out a syntax error stating "expected "," but found identifier.  It highlighted the "unmount" portion.
I am using automator to run applescript.  Any suggestions?  should I be going about this another way?
    @rccharles
nothing is running from the mapped drives.  I am simply mounting them and then trying to unmount.  They are not even open.

  • Can I spin down my internal disk? Open Firmware or terminal commands?

    Hello all,
I have not been around here for a while, but I desperately need your help.
Does anyone know how I can spin down my internal disk?
Possibly with the terminal or Open Firmware?
Does anyone know all the Open Firmware commands or
where a list can be found so that I can explore the situation myself?
Here is some more detail of what I want to do and why.
My internal disk crashed a while ago.
(My bag slid off my shoulder and the machine hit the brick sidewalk below right on its' corner:>(
I have since been running off my little pocket-size fire-wire disk.
Today the internal disk finally really bit the dust and the bearings are making quite a noise.
(If I tip the PB while it is running the noise turns into a whine of varying pitch and loudness.
It sounds like my poor PB is crying in pain. LOL)
I want to get the internal disk to spin down until I can afford a new one and I have the time to replace it.
    Any ideas?
I know I could open up the case and pull the plug on it,
but maybe there is something better and easier.
Can anyone guide me in any possible terminal commands to eject it or
give some insight into firmware commands that may help?
I know the firmware can spin the disk down. - It does so for power management.
Also, one time when I booted, the disk gave the boot process such a bad error that
the boot process asked me what to do. I told it to eject the disk - then the disk spun down
and the machine booted normally off the FW disk.
So, maybe there is an Open Firmware command I could use to permanently shut the thing off.
I cannot use the Disk Utility to unmount or eject it.
In Disk Utility, sometimes the disk is already unmounted and grayed out.
So therefor the unmount and eject commands are also greyed out.
At other times the disk does not even show up in Disk Utility.
    Thanks, Bob

    Thanks for the fast response.
Although your suggestion did not do the trick, it jogged my old mind into
finding a solution that does work. Or seems to work for right now.
The 'drutil' is a command for CD-R/RW media, so it could not see or act on my internal hard drive.
Your suggestion to use a disk utility command sent me off to find a command for other devices and
    I remembered the 'diskutil' command.
I did a 'diskutil list' and after a good wait for the failed disk to allow completion,
I was given a list that showed what device the internal disk was (/dev/disk2).
I then did a 'diskutil eject /dev/disk2' and after a similar wait, the disk was ejected and it spun down.
It was a pleasant surprise since the drive is not ejectable and since the OsX Disk Utility could not eject it.
There are things (running the disk utility) that do seem to wake up the disk occasionally,
but all I have to do is issue the command again.
    Thanks
p.s. Perhaps I was not clear in my original question that
I wanted to spin down my internal ide hard disk - sorry if that was a confusion.
p.p.s. It is also very interesting that I called Apple support and
they could not give me this simple solution.

  • Mount vs unmount

can anybody explain the difference between mounting and unmounting??
what is a mounting point and mount state???
    thanx

mount point is synonym of mount state. maybe you mean mount point of OFA http://ss64.com/ora/syntax-ofa.html ?
NomountWhen Oracle starts an instance it reads the spfile or pfile to determine the initialization paramters. It uses these paramters to allocate the SGA and create background proccesses. All this is done without associating a database to the instance! At this point the instance is started but not mounted, or as some say "Started in no mount mode". They say that because you can reach this state by using the SQL*Plus command "startup nomount".
mountWhen a database is mounted, the datafiles are actually associated is the instance. It's somewhat akin to loading the bullets into a gun; the gun is mearly a vehicle to utilize bullets and without them it's utterly useless. As a fun test, you can rename the datafile directory (where the control and datafiles are) and startup the instance without mounting. You won't get an error, you won't get a complaint... because Oracle isn't interested in anything but the parameter files at this point. Even though the pfile specifies the location of the control file, it hasn't tried to open the control files yet so it won't complain!

  • Terminal command to rebuild launch services database?

Anyone know the exact terminal command to rebuild the launch services database for Mavericks?

You MUST recopy the code above as there are (SPACES) that Terminal will not accept.  e.g.
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user ; killall Dock
Notice, 1st line 'LaunchSe' is cut off...this will show up as a blank space when copy/paste.  Edit this prior to using it in terminal otherwise it could become very frustrating.
Hope this helps it did for me once I did it correctly

  • How to post a very long terminal command in a scolling overflow cell?

I've forgotten how to post, in a forum such as this, a very long Terminal command in an overflow scrolling cell.
Terminal commands can be very problematic unless they are copied accurately.
I know that MacOSHints have these overflow cells included often, but unfortunately I can't find an email contact over there to ask how it's being done.
Maybe only some forums allow this?
Not the same as TinyURL links for URLs of course.
What I'm referring to looks like this when posted to a forum...
Does someone know what the code is for this for a forum?

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    Thanks.
It appears to work... though adding comments __above__ the HTML after using the HTML editor doesn't appear possible.
Some forums don't have the raw HTML editor (e.g. Mac OS X Hints) so I guess I just have to hit the <pre> in the Post Mode...
