Terminal Command to Start ScreenSaver (or Lock Screen)

Is there any way to start the ScreenSaver with a Terminal command?
The curtain mode is great, but if one connects to a computer with locked screensaver, I cannot figure how to reset the screensaver (or screen locking) before closing the connection. Otherwise the computer is locally accessible until the autostart of the screensaver...

open '/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.a pp'
defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver idleTime 180
will set the screensaver startup idletime to 3 minutes
you can read the current settings by issuing
defaults -currentHost read com.apple.screensaver
defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver idleTime 0
is for never activate.
i've tried using 1 and it doesn't come on right away. the fastest i can get it to start is with 60 (60 secs)

  • I need help starting a Terminal command at start-up to help silence CPU fan

I have a 24" iMac (Early 2009) and the CPU fan runs at full RPMs - NOTE: it is a refurbished model. I think that the person who did the refurbishing either messed up the CPU Temp Sensor or something, because the CPU temps are fine and the fan kicks on right after start-up chime.
Anyways, I have found a terminal command (see below) that, when used in conjunction with smcFanControl, will force my CPU fan to run at 1200 RPM. I need a way to either auto-launch this Terminal Command at start-up, or an easier way to launch it because having to type it out in Terminal every boot and reset is getting old.
    Terminal Command:
    /Applications/smcFanControl.app/Contents/Resources/smc -k F2Mx -w 3cf0
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You shell script should look something like this:
    #!/bin/bash
    your command line
Construct this in your favorite text editor and save as plain text, not .rtf.  Call the file anything you want, but here I'll call it slowfan.
    In terminal type,
    chmod +x /path/to/slowfan
where /path/to/slowfan is the path to the slowfan file.  You could drag the file into the terminal after typing the chmod +x followed by a space.  This step is only to mark the text file (script) as executable.
Now you can run Platypus and set up a simple app with admin privleges.  Then test the app.  If it works you can then add it to your login items.
If you decide to use applescript (do shell script descibed earlier) then you could just use the full pathname to whereever you saved the script and save that as a applescript application.  Again test it and then add to your login items.  I would bother adding an alias to .bash_profile.  That just adds to the complextity.
As you can see, with Platypus you only have the single app it creates to deal with.  The script is enclosed in the generated app bundle for easy updating if necessary later on.  With the applescript method you will need to keep track of two spearate files; the applescript and the shell script.  Actually three, the app too.

  • Why does siri starts in the locked screen even if i don't allow it in the restrictions??

Why does siri starts in the locked screen even if i don't allow it in the restrictions? if a thief got my phone he can hold 3 sec the home button and with siri he can call and do what every he wants..

    Thanks, you're my hero! :-)
The problem wasn't about the Restricitions because they are really irrelevant. The Problem was that i didn't had this Option to turn Siri off in the Touch ID & Passcode-Menu because i had to activate Siri first.
Here ist the way to deactivate Siri in the locked Screen:
[1] Settings > General > Siri > turn Siri on
[2] Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > ALLOW ACCESS WHEN LOCKED > turn Siri off

  • (SOLVED) Lock screen suddenly doesn't work as expected

It doesn't matter which lock screen (PIN, swipe, etc.) I choose, after the first unlock (after a reboot or change of lock screen), the phone no longer locks. Using the power button to lock doesn't work and I have the phone set to lock right away on sleep. It was working fine a few hours ago and there wasn't anything new I did to the phone.
    Any ideas?

Hello, I feel pretty dumb. I must've hit the "Disable lock screen" option in the BatteryBot Pro app by accident...I forgot it even had that option.
If anyone's curious how I solved this, I inspected system messages using OS Monitor while reproducing the problem (ie, flipping through lock screen options and turning off/on the screen) and kept seeing the app's name coming up as well as a few others. I'm not sure why it started disabling the lock screen today though; I'm pretty sure I didn't touch the app in the last couple days.
    Anyway, sorry for any inconvenience.

  • HP laptop won't let me change lock screen or account picture

I went to change my pictures for the lock screen and the account and everytime I try to change it, it gives me a message saying "Account/Lock screen picture error. Setting the account/lock screen failed. Please try again." I'll try to put the default pictures just to see if that would work and no matter what I do, it will not change. It's so aggravating. What can I do?

    Hi,
Thank you for providing the above information.
To ensure the fault behind the error is not with Windows, I'd recommend doing a system refresh to start. Refresh Your PC to Resolve Problems (Windows 8).
And just as reference when trying to set the lock/account screen afterwards, here are two Microsoft documents:
See pictures on the desktop, Start, and the lock screen
        Personalize your PC
I hope this helps, let me know how it goes.
    Thanks.

  • Air recovery start with command-R and I get a Lock screen?

I sold my mac,  after erasing some of my personal files and maybe something else I shouldn't have apparently,  wont boot up.  Tried booting with Command-R to recover but it gives me the lock screen with a password entry box.   Am I supposed to know some other password?  Help what do I do?  Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
What you are been asked for is a firmware password. If you haven't set up one, try resetting the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 Also, reset the PRAM > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If you don't remember the firmware password, the only thing you can do is to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get it removed because users can't remove it without knowing the password

  • Is there a Siri command to get to the home screen from the lock screen?

Here is the situation - an elderly friend of mine (94 years old) was in a panic because there were text messages on the lock screen and try as he might he could not "slide to open."
    He has no passcode set.
Anyway, I had him try this and it worked:
    1. Use Siri to "open calendar."
    2. After it opened, press the Home button to get to the home screen.
That way he was able to get in.
Is there a Siri command to go directly to the Home Screen from the lock screen? I tried various things I could think of, but couldn't figure out anything that worked.
What would be best is being able to bypass the lock screen altogether. I have another elderly friend who is blind and it is a source of constant confusion for him.
As for voiceover - he is finding it impossible to figure out. I can see, and I am also finding it impossible to figure out. We tried to use it to get into the TED app and select, play and stop videos and all sorts of weird UI elements starting popping up and it was frustrating him so we turned voiceover off. But that's for another discussion thread.
In the meantime, is there an easy way to get home if somebody is having trouble sliding?
    Thanks,
    doug

Yes, that can sometimes be true.
Unless your older but sighted friend has difficulty with fine motor movements, I suspect that the slide to open is a matter of practice. If you can convice your friend that they are capable of learning it and get them to work with it a bit that might help. I've found that older learners can become frustrated very quickly with technology. They either have themselves convinced they can't learn technolgy or that get annoyed because iPhones are supposed to be "intuative". The challenge is getting them to feel okay about being a beginner at something.
You're a good friend to take on this teaching task.

  • Locking screen with screensaver

    Hello,
I managed to add a Keychain Access icon to my bar, to make it easier to Lock Screen, but i want to start the screensaver when i lock the screen, how is that possible?

Update: you can do this with Automator.
Open Automator. Choose a new Workflow. Click on Utilities in the Library list in the sidebar. Scroll down the contents to Start Screen Saver and drag it to the main pane on the right. File>Save As; choose 'Application' and give it a name. Save it anywhere convenient then drag it to the Dock (to the left of the divider, with the other applications). You can now start your screen saver with one click.

  • I have an iPod Touch 5th generation and all of a sudden it started freezing on the lock screen.

I have an iPod Touch 5th generation that I've had since Christmas 2012 and suddenly today (June 27) when I tried opening one of my apps it froze and then shut the app down. At first I thought it was the app, but then it started happening to Safari and my Photos app. By time I had gotten to work when I slid the bar over to unlock it, it froze and wouldn't do anything. I had tried turning it off, holding the lock button down and sliding the power off slide, but the screen went black instead of turning off. Every few minutes it would suddenly light back up on the lock screen but wouldn't do anything after I slid the thing to unlock it. Sometimes it would seem to turn itself back on (even though I wasn't aware it had turned off, the apple logo never showed up) from black to the loading page (black screen with little circle thing lighting up to show it's loading) to the lock screen which wouldn't do anything. The time is constantly on track and the wifi connectivity icon on the top bar even shows when there's wifi, I just can't do anything with it. I could double tap the Home button and the music bar would show up and the volume level would change through me touching the screen and through the volume buttons on the side, but it wouldn't play anything. I also can hold the Home button and Siri shows up but then I can't actually speak anything to it.
I've managed to connect it to my computer and back it up to iCloud and on my computer and am trying to restore it right now, but I would like to know what's wrong with it. I've had it for about 7 months and have never had any issues with it like this before.

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

  • Is there a lock screen command in OS X similar to Screen Lock in Windows?

I want to lock screen for a brief period of time, and didnt want to log out or shut down the system.
Is there a lock screen command for this, so that I can lock it and unlock whenever I need?
Or I am wondering if I can log out without closing the application so that when I log in back, I get to the application and continue working from whereever I left.
I dont want to close the application and be able to lock or logout the user. Please suggest me some ideas.
    Thanks,
    Gopinath

Open the Security pane of System Preferences and check the box to require the password to wake from sleep or screen saver. In the Desktop & Screen Saver pane, set up the screen saver to activate when the mouse is at a specific corner. The screen saver can be unlocked with the password of the person who is logged in to the machine or with any administrator password.

  • Terminal command to lock and unlock the dock?

    Hello,
I manage hundreds of iMacs running Yosemite at a school site.  I use parental controls with the lock dock feature turned on.  I would like to periodically unlock the dock to customize it with new icons, but have not found a terminal command that works, or a streamlined process that is time efficient.
So far I have been individually unlocking the dock in parent controls on each machine, restarting, editing the dock, then re-locking it parental controls, then restarting.  This takes 5-10 minutes per machine).
I also tried this command but it didn't work.
    defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool true; killall Dock;
I also tried cloning the parental controls with an exported plist file to all the machines using ARD, which works for all the parental control settings EXCEPT for the lock dock feature.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Crystal

Sorry this is probably too late for you, but it may help others seeking this answer, I just had this problem [Mac OS x Yosemite 10.10.2] and found that the following worked for me:
    1. Use Terminal to LOCK the Dock by C&P or typing in:
defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool true
Then use your preferred method to Log-Out [e.g. Key Combo ⇧⌘Q or  [Top Left Menu] then select Log Out “name”]
    and then Log-In again.
    2. Use Terminal to UNLOCK the Dock by C&P or typing in:
defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool false
Then use your preferred method to Log-Out [e.g. Key Combo ⇧⌘Q or  [Top Left Menu] then select Log Out “name”]
    and then Log-In again.

  • Xperia Z3 Compact camera error when starting from locked screen (symbol lock)

    Hi
I'm a new owner of Xperia Z3 Compact and I have noticed a problem when launching camera. The app itself works perfectly well but when trying to launch camera from locked phone (screen locked with symbol) it shows only black screen with error message that camera app it unaccessible. After removing lock screen protection both camera symbol on lock screen and dedicated camera button works as intended. Is it supposed to be that way? On my previous phone I could launch camera app without unlocking screen but couldn't access any other parts of the phone. I'd love to have it working the same way here especially with the dedicated camera button.
    Hoping for a fast answer.
    Regards
    Huma

You may need to perform a software repair using PC Companion. The process will erase all internal memory. You might need to charge your device for about 1-2 hours before so the device has at least 60% battery.
Make sure the device is not connected to computer or laptop and turned off (sometimes you have to press power button and volume up until the device vibrates 3 times or on some devices you have to press the small button near the SIM tray or on the back of the device).
Open PC companion->support zone->phone/tablet software update->repair my phone/tablet blue highlighted.Follow the steps given,do not connect your phone until prompted to press volume down while plugging USB cable. If PC companion does not start the repair process, you might need to run it in compatibility mode with Windows 7 (in some cases XP).

  • My lock screen only stays on on for a millisecond on start up ipad air is this usual

my lock screen only stays on on for a millisecond on start up ipad air is this usual.

Thanks for the replies.  I like to power down most of the time to save battery so if it's gonna be normal for me not to be able to get to the slider screen before it goes into sleep I guess  I will have to accept it.  However I'm sure I remember rightly that the first few times I used it after set up it used to stay on screen for several seconds to allow me to slide the button over.  Now it never does and to be honest I would expect it to wait after all you don't boot up your PC and then it immediately go into sleep mode unless something was wrong.  I thought most things when powered on would let you sign in or whatever before "going to sleep".
Just concerned to do a reset in case the darned thing does erase stuff which would seriously tee me off.  Appreciate the feedback guys.
