Terminal doesn't accept my password! It doesn't even type it!

I need help can someone explain or help me to fix this.
I wanted to fix hosts file, entered the command
sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
Then Terminal shows this warning:
WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss
or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your
typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information.
To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort.
Password:
When I enter my password it doesn't even type?!
as if it 'froze' or it doesn't read my typing...
Now what? Help?
if I press Ctrl -C wil it abort properly?

No, it's taking your password, for security it just doesn't show it on the screen when you type it. That warning is standard. sudo means you are running as "superuser" with full, unrestricted access to all the system files. You can, by typing in the wrong command, nuke your entire drive. It should be used with great care -- make sure the command you are using is fully vetted and best to copy and paste it in. Typos can be disastrous. Case and spaces are critical.
If you didn't press enter after typing in that command then, yes, do a control-c.
If a process is running, you can type in q and hit enter.
Have you gotten another $ prompt? If so, just type in "exit" and press enter, then close the window. What do you want to do in the hosts file?
If you can't get a new prompt, then open Activity Monitor in Utilities, select "all processes" select it and force quit Terminal. Control-c may, if you've started one, quit a process running in Terminal, but not Terminal itself. You can try just closing the window, then reopen it and see if there's a new prompt. If there is, then the slate is clean.

  • Su command in terminal will not accept correct password

I have set up the root account and can log into it from normal login pane "other".
However, if I open a terminal window and type either "su" or "su root" it asks for the password. I enter the correct root password but it just says "sorry". Isn't su supported?

just discovered another strange thing. I enabled root long time ago and don't remember how I did it. I just followed a tip from somewhere. I thought I would go thru this again and see if I could reset the password there. The tips I find for snow leopard all say
    1. Open Directory Utility in its new home, which is /System/Library/CoreServices.
    2. Unlock the application by clicking the padlock icon and entering your Administrator login.
    3. Select Edit » Enable Root User.
    4. Choose Edit » Change Root Password, and choose a password for the root user.
in 10.6.7 there is no Edit
    Something has been changed.
Tomorrow I'll try this on the imac which is still 10.6.6

  • Why won't app store accept my password on iPhone?

The app store won't accept my password . I've even changed it multiple times to try to fix it. Also I can sign in and out of iTunes with my password, just not on the app store.

I didn't do anything to fix it - the next day, after another reboot (for an unrelated software update) I opened iTunes and tried again, and it worked fine. Go figure.

I changed my password and used the new computer, next time I tried to log in it wouldn't accept the password. I tried the old one as well but that doesn't work either. Can anyone help?

    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu. Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Be sure to open Keychain Access and repair the keychain:
Assuming that you are using a recent build of OS X, go to /Applications/Utilities and launch the app called Keychain Access. Go to the Window pulldown menu and select "Keychain First Aid". Enter your password, set the radio button to "Repair", and click "Start".

  • Terminal Doesn't Allow Me To Type In Password

I'm changing a sudo command and need to type in my password on the Terminal. However, when the prompt asks for my password (I'm the admin) there's a gray rectangle and I can't type in anything. I can't even type "Ctrl-C" to quit.
I tried pasting my password. Typing my password. Repaired permissions. Nada. Help!

However, when the prompt asks for my password (I'm the admin) there's a gray rectangle and I can't type in anything.
That's normal; unlike most applications, the Terminal doesn't display anything when characters are entered in response to a request for the password. Type it in and press Enter when done.

  • HT3376 My Bt Yahoo email account doesn't accept my password when my Mac gives it but if I access my BT yahoo via Safari it accepts the password

my BT yahoo email account doesn't accept my password when my Mac tries to access it using mac mail but when I access My BT Yahoo via Safari it accepts the password.

When it doesn't accept the password from Mail , it can be things other than the password actually.
It could be their Server, which is contacted differently than through WebMail, it just means the Server listening on this port, (or not listening), is not finding your username & password.
