Terminal - emacs command problem

Reading some interesting information on a Mac Hints website, I discovered you could play some simple games in Terminal using the 'emacs' command. But it doesn't seem to work.
I can get the list of games using the: *ls /usr/share/emacs/21.2/lisp/play* command but when I type 'emacs' after to enable the playing of the games I get the following message:
*dumpemacs: Must be run as root unless -n is used*
*emacs: child exited with status 1*
According to the website I read, it should start emacs, then I use Esc+x to go back to the prompt then type the name of the game I want to play but after that message has appeared, if I type the name of a game, I just get 'Command Not Found'
What is wrong?

Fixed the problem!
I think it may be something to do with upgrading from Jaguar to Tiger but instead of typing 'emacs', if I type 'emacs-21.2.1' emacs starts up fine and I'm then able to access the hidden games and programs.
Although I've solved the problem, is it possible to get it to run the emacs command by just typing 'emacs'?

  • Terminal & "periodic" command problem.

    I noticed that my inactive memory was up to 8GB, so I decded to run "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly" to clean it out. It started, then almost immediately finished the task & I still had all that inactive memeory in use (with 365 MB free). Has periodic changed in the latest update or has it been munged and I need to reinstall terminal (or something else)?

    If that were true, it would be an incidental, undocumented side-effect that is, as such, not guaranteed to remain constant.
    A few notes... first, note that you probably never actually need to run those three scripts. See [Five Mac Maintenance Myths|http://www.macworld.com/article/133684/2008/06/maintenance_intro.html].
    Second, if you are not having some kind of performance issue, you should not be interpreting a high inactive memory number as a problem. Inactive memory should, under normal circumstances, be purged automatically when needed. Just ignore it
    Third, if you are having performance issues, they may not have anything to do with the inactive memory numbers. You may or may not have memory problems - your issues might be caused by something completely different. Try looking at the [Mac OS X speed FAQ|http://www.index-site.com/Macosxspeed.html].

    I don't know the answer to this but you might try the -v option on the mail command in order to get verbose output. Perhaps a useful message would pop up.
    Also, you might consider posting this message in the Unix Forum. There is a good chance that someone there can help you with this issue.

    To Oracle Application Express Development Team,
    Yesterday I installed Oracle Application Express 3.2.0.00.27.
    While doing my r&d, I came across one problem in SQL Command.
    For example I wanted to run sql "select * from tab"
    When I checked "Autocommit" checkbox it worked fine.
    But when I unchecked the "Autocommit" checkbox it gave me following error:

    I searching for the information that the terminal "last" command holds.
    When I execute the "last' command...... I am seeing too little to be real..... something is up..... I need to determine when the information was deleted.

  • Terminal Color emulation problems (emacs)

    I'm trying to use emacs for a C course I'm taking in college, and my goal is to configure it like a fully functional IDE. So far I'm at color problems.
    I've installed the color-themes package along with cc-mode, and some text/background combinations aren't being emulated correctly. For example, certain bold things have the same foreground and background colors, such as file names and other stuff. I've been having more problems with other color emulation too, like servers that use color emulation for ls to show different types of files.
    Also, I can't seem to use control+meta at the same time, it just uses meta.

    Are you using the emacs that Apple provides in Terminal? The one in /usr/bin?
    If so, perhaps you would be happier with an emacs that understands the idea of having its own windows?
    Two ways to do that...
    1) Use X windows, and install an emacs that understands X windows
    2) Find one of the versions of emacs that has been taught to understand Aqua, i.e., that works within the Finder/Desktop environment.
    Of the latter, I think there are couple out there on the web, Aquamacs Emacs and Carbon Emacs (but I don't keep carefull track, so I'm not sure).
    For the former, it's a bit more work to find and install such an emacs. One possibility is the "fink" package management system.

  • Terminal's "locate" Command Problem

    Howdy,
    I was trying to locate a file that had been autosaved by MS Excel prior to a power outage...
    Not knowing where MS autosaved it's "stuff", I was using Terminal and the "locate" command to try to find the file and it's path, however it wouldn't show up.  I ensured that weekly script had run after the power outage.
    I eventually located the wayward file (trial and error with the finder), but never could get "locate" to find it.  It also appears that "locate" won't find other files in the username/Library/ folder.  Putting the file's full name in with the appropriate quote marks at the beginning and end of the file name didn't help with the "locate."
    Don't know if it helps someone answer my question, but the missing file location was:  ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/Office 2011 AutoRecovery.
    I don't remember running into this problem under Mtn Lion, or previous OS's...  I'm not seeing an obvious restriction in the man page about doing a locate in the user/Library folder..
    Thanks for your thoughts...
    Bob

    The second paragraph under "BUGS" in the locate(1) man page says:
         The locate database is typically built by user ``nobody'' and the
         locate.updatedb(8) utility skips directories which are not readable for
         user ``nobody'', group ``nobody'', or world.  For example, if your HOME
         directory is not world-readable, none of your files are in the database.
    My ~/Library directory has permissions 700, so locate wouldn't be able to find
    anything there.  I would use find(1) instead, e.g.:
    find ~/Library -name '*AutoRec*' -print

  • Applescript Terminal Command Problem

    Hilo
    I am making an application that Alphabetizes words.
    Everything works except that whenever I get to this part -
    do shell script "cd ~/Public/Alphabetizer; ls -l *.pl; chmod +x Alphabetizer.pl; ./Alphabetizer.pl"
    does anyone know why nothing happens, and if you do,
    can you tell what to type to show what happens on terminal using applescript?
    ^_^ greatly appreciated

    What do you expect to happen? That command does not involve Terminal at all. If you want to check the stdout from the shell commands, you could use the Results pane and/or the Event Log in Script Editor. Or redirect the output to a file.
    If you want an actual Terminal window, you need to send the commands to Terminal, rather than directly to a shell. E.g.,
    tell application "Terminal"
    activate
    do script "ls -l"
    end tell
    Note that that is the Terminal's +do script+ command, not AppleScript's +do shell script+ command.

  • Unix command problem

    Sometimes I'll use the 'bg' command to run a process in the background so I can do other tasks in the same terminal window.
    For some reason, I still get the output of the process even though I said BG, not FG (foreground, of course).
    My roomate runs Linux and he doesn't have this problem, does this make sense to anyone?

    Let me make sure that I understand correctly. I assume that you start a job, then type ctrl-z to suspend it and then type bg to put it into the background.
    If so, and if you are getting output to the screen, then I would conclude that the screen is still the standard output device. What I would do is redirect the output to a file. In fact, you can start the job in background mode. If your process is myjob, then this command
    myjob > outfile &
    will send the output from myjob to the file outfile and the "&" puts the job into the background.
    I hope this helps.

  • Terminal and Widget Problems

    I am running into an unusual problem with my computer. I used Terminal to allow my widgets to go to the desktop (witch did not work), but when I typed in the command it added the plus and arrow symbol (the same as when you go to widgets on your mac) to my main desktop. How do I fix this?
    file://localhost/Users/student/Desktop/Screen%20Shot%202013-05-17%20at%201.10.18 %20PM.TIF

    Fixed this issue by installing XQuartz.  After this the DISPLAY environment variable is set to a value.
    plb$ env | grep DIS
    DISPLAY=/tmp/launch-fMUlob/org.macosforge.xquartz:0
    plb$ ssh -Y oracle@grid1vm1
    oracle@grid1vm1's password:
    Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.
    Last login: Wed Aug  8 17:58:09 2012 from 10.187.89.245
    [oracle@grid1vm1 ~]$ env | grep DIS
    DISPLAY=localhost:11.0
    [oracle@grid1vm1 ~]$ xclock
    XQuartz starts on the Mac and xclock now appears as it should in my Mac display.

    In Terminal I did a
    sudo find / | grep pogoplug
    and that returned lots of files with *pogoplug* as part of the filename.
    Now what I need to learn is how to do a mass deletion of anything pogoplug related as I do not use this anymore and it seems to be clogging my system.
    I tried a basic rm -R *pogoplug* but that didn't work.  (unsurprising)
    Please note that these files found by the find command turned up files on a couple of external drives as well, so what I'd like to do is totally delete anything with "pogoplug" in the file or directory name.
    * I used the app Pogoplug a few months ago to evaluate a NAS setup.  Pogoplug came with it.  I had thought that I had deleted everything when I dragged the app to AppCleaner but apparently not.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I would absolutely not recommend trying to use the rm command to deal with this problem. It's too dangerous to mess around with unless you know exactly what you're doing.
    Things like AppCleaner aren't very reliable for uninstalling complex software. You need to use the uninstaller provided by the makers of the software. They supply an uninstall script here:

    yes i did. it is in the applications folder. however, the default path when i open a shell won’t get me there and i don’t know how to change it. it should be /don’t forget to smash the state [my computer’s name]/macintosh hd/applications/browsers/firefox.app [or something to that effect].
    also, when i drag profilemanager .app into terminal shell i get

    does this mean that profilemanager.app is a directory? if it is, how do i access it?
    further, if /Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -profilemanager is supposed to be where the command indicates, it isn’t. how do i get it there?

  • Being asked for password using "boot to xp" terminal server command

    I have XP partitioned on my Mac and I've always used a command shortcut I found on the internet that I put into terminal server called "boot to xp." I click on the alias I created, click "run" and it re-boots the system into xp.
    Now, I click on the alias, click run, and I receive a prompt asking me for a password with a message stating "type your password to allow boot to xp to make changes."
    I'm not sure what I've done to cause this but I'd like to turn it off. I had two accounts on this mac...one I use all the time and one called "admin." I never used the "admin" and had "admin rights" on this account so I deleted the one I called "admin" when this problem started. That didn't help.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

    you know it's not a great idea to put your admin password in plain text form in the script. here is the script I use
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    property target_username : ""
    property target_userpassword : ""
    property bootcamp_drive : ""
    on open these_items
    set bootcamp_drive to quoted form of POSIX path of (item 1 of these_items)
    display dialog "Enter the name of an admin account as  it appears in the Accounts menu:" default answer target_username
    set the target_username to the text returned of the result
    display dialog "Enter the password for that account:" default answer "" with hidden answer
    set the target_userpassword to the text returned of the result
    end open
    on run
    do shell script "bless -mount " & bootcamp_drive & " -legacy -setBoot -nextonly" user name target_username password target_userpassword with administrator privileges
    tell application "System Events" to restart
    end run</pre>
    save it as an application.
    first, drop the bootcamp drive onto the script You only need to do this once). it will prompt you for you admin name and password. now you can simply run the app to reboot into windows. the password will be stored in the script but at least it's not simply entered there in plain text form as you did. It's still possible to get the password out of my script too but it requires a bit more skill.
