Terminal 'ls' shows files Finder does not - Finder 10.6.8 shows files, Finder 10.8.4 does not

Hello,
Mapped a network drive via smb://, copied files from Mac OS 10.8.4 to the network drive (Ext3).  When map same network drive via smb:// and view files in Finder certain files do not appear.  These are NOT typical hidden dot files like .DS_Store but word documents and other "regular" files (e.g. my_cv_ver8.doc), so these files should always be visible.  When first open up the folder in Finder the files all appear before they quickly disapear after ~1 second.  Strange!  This is not happening to all the files, just a subset of files - many of the files and file types appear fine (e.g. some .doc files are ok).  When I make Finder show me hidden files (defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE) I can see them, but these files should not be hidden!
It really seems to be an issue in OS 10.8.4's Finder:
With OS 10.8.4 when I look at the mapped network drive with a trial version of Path Finder I can see the files.  With OS 10.8.4 using terminal, 'ls' shows all the files there (note: don't have to use ls -a).  When I view the mapped network drive on my wife's Mac OS 10.6.8 Finder I can see the files.
What is going on?  How can I fix this?  How can I make the Finder in OS 10.8.4 show the same files as a terminal 'ls' or as OS 10.6?
Thanks!

Yes, great point about no read/write for Ext3 with Mac.  My Mac cannot read the drive via USB but when I mount the drive via smb:// through the network my Mac can read Ext3 (I'm not an expert but it seems that smb is handling the read/write to Ext3).
The operative word in my post was 'support'.  When apple says something is unsupported, what they mean is
It probably won't work by default, or at all.
It may or may not be made to work with some monkeying, which they don't recommend.
If it works, it may not always work, or continue to work, or work the same in every case and context.
You're on your own.
The problem is that OS X doesn't know anything about the structure of the Ext3 file system, so it really doesn't know what to do when it sees them.  If it works over smb it's only be because smb is doing some translation and OS X is treating the Ext3 disk like like it ware a standard unix format, but since it isn't, and smb isn't designed for that purpose, there's absolutely no guarantees that it will work correctly or consistently across the board.
It's a bit like having a car whose brakes only fail sometimes.  The car runs perfectly fine until one of those 'sometimes' happens, and then it doesn't.

Hurrican, ok, there is no need to install antother terminal, as I wrote it did not work also in xterm.
Yesterday evening, tired and sad that gk(su|sudo) still does not work,
as the "last chance idea", I logged in into multi-user mode ( init level 3 ) and changed root's password,
then loged in into graphical mode ( init level 5 ), start gnome-terminal and suddenly ... command "su -" started to work.
By the way, similar solution ( but with chroot ) has suggested Gulver in his post ( this thread, answer #2 ).
The question is, why root's password, set during install, after finished installation is recognized in text mode, but not im graphical ?
First root's password was really simple, like "dog4356", without any national chars.
You're right. I don't even have xterm installed so I guess I just singled out gnome-terminal and forgot that xterm also wasn't working.
Forgive me for my shaky advice. Like you I've been super busy, and sweating out a fever of 102 degrees (that's Fahrenheit no my
blood wasn't boiling ). Anyways, glad you got it working. After reading over the whole thread and thinking about it for a little bit, I
can't really make a good guess as to what was happening.
I'm sure you probably had tried this, but you could have typed the password out in the command line so you could see it. If there was
something wrong with it, it would have shown up there as well. If it was perfectly fine, then it would have been very, very weird.
The important thing is you got it working.
    Merry Christmas.

  • HT201240 I lost su (root) password in terminal. How I find or reset password?

I lost su (root) password in terminal. How I find or reset password?

Many people do not bother with enabling the root password, as the 'sudo' command gives most admins everthing they need, including the ability to become root
    sudo su -
is effectively the same as logging into the root account, only starting from your admin account.
    sudo -s
allows your root account in inherit some of your current environment variables
Once you are 'root', you could change your password using 'passwd'

I have repaired disk permissions from the Leopard installation disk, and have tried logging on as a different user - to no avail. Version is 2.0.2 How can I repair or replace the app? Tks.

Just tried your advice to check Console, but Console crashes right after startup...
You seem to have more problems than just Terminal.
You can view the logs directly in /var/log/system.log
    You could use iTerm <http://iterm.sf.net>.
Another approach would be to download TextWranger that can open text files anywhere on your system.

    Hi,
According to the error message, please use performance monitor to diagnose if it is a memory-related bottleneck and you can use the counters of the memory part in the article below:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2008.08.pulse.aspx
In addition, it may be due to thousands of open connections to the server are in a TIME_WAIT state. You can run "netstat -an" command on the affected server and client. If you see mutiple connections in the TIME_WAIT state, you can follow the article
to increase the number of TCP/IP connections:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee377084(v=bts.70).aspx
Furthermore, if you are running windows server 2003, please make sure that you have installed the KB 948496 and stop all services that you don't need.

  • Type "purge" in Terminal and get:   -bash: purge: command not found   Is there another built-in command to clear memory leaks?   want to clear memory periodically

I have 10.6.8.  When I type "purge" in Terminal I get:   -bash: purge: command not found   Is there another built-in command to clear memory leaks?   I have FreeMemory (works well) and considering FreeMemory Pro, to clear memory periodically, say every 20 minutes, or preferably when a threshold is reached, say when only 100MB is available.

To get purge to work you need to install Xcode from Optional Installs on the 10.6 install DVD. Also be sure you install CHUD Tools with it.
But running purge or anything like it is pointless if within a short period of time the VM just grows back again. Sounds like you need more RAM.
Where are the memory leaks? Just because the VM reaches a certain size doesn't necessarily mean it's from a memory leak.

    Hi experts,
I've installed SAP NetWeaver 7.01 SR1 ABAP Trial Version. I'm following instructions given and the next step is to log into the system via web gui with this url: http://localhost:8000/sap/bc/gui/sap/its/webgui?sap-client=000. However I'm getting this error:
    Service cannot be reached
    What has happened?
URL http://localhost:8000/sap/bc/gui/sap/its/webgui call was terminated because the corresponding service is not available.
    Note
        * The termination occurred in system NSP with error code 403 and for the reason Forbidden.
        * The selected virtual host was 0 .
I did some research and from what I've read I should activate a service trough so called SICF. After installation I've got only sap management console in wich I have this main NSP node, below that database instance and SAP system instance, I tried to logon to this system instance choosing "logon" from context menu but always with some errors. Now I'm stuck, please help.

    Hi,
You will need to login using SAPGUI for windows first and then execute transaction SICF and from there, activate this service.
Please install SAPGUI first on your machine and login using it.

Have tried terminal. Password is lost or not recognized. I have tried using advice I found online. There is no disk to reboot. If I try to hold the C key it doesn't have a downward arrow it's up. I tried Terminal, doesn't recognize any commands. I'm fed up and tried using 24/7 paying them and for nothing. I cannot upload Maverick, not enough memory. Any other suggestions? I have more downloaded materials I'll try later but this is driving me nuts.

    however, it also says

which is plain wrong, because Canon never supported any drivers for Windows Vista or Win 7, not to speak of XP 64bit. (You cannot connect the camera via firewire, without the device drivers!)

    Hello GeoffKorten
go to ~/Library/Firefox (the tilde character (~) refers to the current user's Home folder, so ~/Library is the /Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library folder)
then find [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profiles.ini_file profiles.ini] file and rename it to profiles.iniOLD , then when you start firefox again, a new default profile folder will be created and only a single profile, the new "default", will be listed in the Profile Manager.
This new "default" profile doesn't contain any of the profile data or settings stored in your old "default" profile folder, which still exists but is no longer accessible from the Profile Manager.
Your existing Firefox user profile data, which includes bookmarks, passwords, cookies, preference settings and added extensions, will no longer appear in the new profile but you can [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox transfer the data from the old profile folder to the new default profile folder].

  • "quoted string not properly terminated" error in File to Oracle interface

We have an interface at our site that is a simple file to Oracle interface. We used the sqlldr LKM and the SQL Control Append IKM. The interface bombs out when one of the unmapped Oracle fields has this for a string literal in it: '--A'. It's a size 3 varchar field in Oracle. We can put in other literals fine in it, but using the '--A' one brings back this error in the Insert portion of the interface:
    1756 : 42000 : java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01756: quoted string not properly terminated
java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01756: quoted string not properly terminated
I ran the sql query that ODI bombs out on and the record inserts fine inside sql developer.
Anybody else experience this and if so what was the solution to get past this?
    We're using ODI 10.1.3.5.5.

    Hi A,
I tried this but it didn't work. I am puzzled as to why OBIEE prints any special character after a % twice. For example %& becomes %&& or %' become %'' . I guess it is the Evaluate function that is fiddling with the % .
    Thanks.

The bash shell does a reverse name lookup using you IP address and displays whatever the DNS server returns as your host name. If the external DNS server has nothing for your IP address, Mac OS X will provide bash with your System Preferences -> Sharing -> Computer name
If you wish to force your bash shell command prompt, search the forum for "PS1" and you will find examples.
