Terminal unresponsive [solved]
My terminal (xterm, urxvt, gnome-terminal and virtual terminal) doesn't respond to commands anymore. When I enter any command, for example "ls", it simply hangs and returns no output. When I try Ctrl + c to interrupt it, it prints "^C" and continues hanging.
This started today, in a work meeting, after someone passed me a usb key with a .pptx document on it that I opened with OpenOffice. Restarting has no effect. I thought this might be my window manager (evilwm), so I reverted to Gnome, and eventually virtual terminals and the Fallback kernel. This makes no difference. I have made no updates to my system recently, and my computer worked fine until now.
And here is where it gets really weird: everything that doesn't rely on the terminal works fine. I can login with evilwm or gnome and use any gui program like nothing was wrong (obviously gnome works better). I can manage wireless connections, edit text files, use the file manager, etc.
Normally I am run a fairly bare system, with evilwm, wicd, mpd, hal, icrond and crond as daemons. I'd post logs and outputs, but frankly I'm completely at a loss as to what might be useful and not, and also, I'm just not sure how to go about it without the terminal to pipe output around.
Any ideas or advice would be appreciated. Seeing as nautilus works I could just back up on a usb drive and nuke the whole thing, but I don't want to do just yet because 1) why did this happen, and what do I do if it happens again?, and 2) what if this was caused by a virus on the usb stick (from a windows machine) and will infect my usb drive?

Yes! .bashrc was the problem. I exchanged mine for one doing... well, nothing, and that solved the problem. Thanks for that.
This still leaves a couple of questions open, most notably What is this i don't even. I'll check the lines in the old one by hand, maybe one of them is buggy and it only just showed up now.

hello, I have this same problem: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=39192 but the "solution" posted there does not help me at all, I wish I could reuse the old thread but the 'SOLVED' keyword in the title may be confusing so I'm starting a new one.
the problem is that the prompt of my terminals (konsole, yakuake, xterm) is PS1='\s-\v\$ ' in all users; this started to happen after the last upgrade when the profile mechanism was changed somehow, I have no PS1 in my .bashrc and the PS1 in profile.bash is PS1='[\u@\h:\w]\n\$ '.
an interesting thing to know is that the virtual consoles (the ones accessed with Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6]) have the right prompt, and sourcing /etc/profile also fixes the problem on the others so I'm guessing that some other configuration file (possibly KDE or X related) is overwriting my prompt but I can't find it! fgrep -R 'PS1' /etc/profile* only shows the one I set not the wrong one.
/etc/profile and /etc/profile.bash are being loaded since the other declarations are present as well when running `set` only PS1 has changed it's value.

How can I customize my terminal?[SOLVED]
I'm using xterm and /bin/zsh, but it looks ugly. It's a white background with a black text. On debian, I use to right click and hit preferences and went from there. But when I right click it just highlights the shell. How can I customize background color, change font, etc?

Multiple "Open in Terminal" entries [Solved]
Recently I upgraded from Gnome 3.8 to 3.10. After upgrade, whenever I right click on a folder I see "Open in Terminal" multiple times. Does any one know how to fix it?

IRSSI and Terminal Window [SOLVED]
Hello,
I recently installed Arch with Fluxbox in order to try it and I'm wondering if there is a way to start a terminal window then automatically have it run a command.
For example, I'm currently working on editing my fluxbox menu and want to be able to open irssi automatically from the menu rather than having to open a terminal window to start it. At first I tried just setting the command as "irssi" but this doesn't do anything. Is there some way I can open a terminal window then have it execute irssi automatically?

urxvt -e sh -c irssi
where sh is the shell you want to launch the command under.
EDIT: Beaten to the punch. You can use smurnjiff's method, if it works for you - but I've found that unless you specify a shell, urxvt fails to keep a window around long enough to do anything with the command. Works fine with one shot deals though - such as 'mpc prev' or similar.

[SOLVED] Terminal is slow to refresh.
Hi There Folks,
After the last update my terminal(s) have become annoyingly slow. The first thing I noticed was that lines don't scroll smoothly when you scroll across pages in emacs (no window) or vim--roughly a second to bring in new lines. I thought that it was a terminal issue, but the behavior is present in urxvt, terminator, gnome-terminal, and lxterminal. I don't appear to be having any other graphical issues when watching videos, or desktop effects, it just the terminals.
Additionally, when the screen is full, commands like ls, etc. respond rather slow as well. Roughly the same 1 second delay.
I have seen a few posts which describe similar issues with the nvidia drivers, and one that references the intel driver, but I want to see if anyone has any ideas before I try to downgrade my driver.

I wouldn't call changing fonts to a non-bitmap font a 'solution', rather it's a workaround.
I just changed from xf86-video-intel-uxa to xf86-video-intel-sna and it *is* actually solved, though.
Yeah, you are right, it was a workaround. Anyway, I also changed from xf86-video-intel-uxa to xf86-video-intel-sna, switched the font back to terminus and everything seems to be working as it should. Now can I call it solved ;-) ? Thanks!! -
Hi, I am a g5 user with a 10.5.7 OS. I made a very stupid mistake the other day when my computer started running slow and the pinwheel kept coming up every time I went to crop a picture on iphoto '09. I went and re-installed iphoto '08 thinking it would solve this issue, but then it slowed everything down even more and now I can't open iphoto at all, it won't launch. I called the phone service and he advised to reload "09 and it would solve the problem. Wrong it got worse, now I can't open my finder - it is unresponsive. At this point I am in a panic and need help. Has anyone gone through this? I can't get into my finder so I cannot open any applications. Can anyone help me please?
Since the Apple Script information didn't make that much sense to me I followed another persons advise and copied this:
mkdir ~/Documents/FilesFromMyDesktop
find ~/Desktop -type f -depth 1 -exec mv {} ~/Documents/FilesFromMyDesktop \;
into the terminal which solved all my problems immediately by removing all my files from the desktop and placing it in my documents where I could delete them without any problems. -
Hi folks,
I'd like to make the ENTER key behave the same way as the TAB key in
the system I'm developing. I thought I would be able to do it by setting
the ENTER as a function key (using Window.SetAsFunctionKey), and
then after detecting an ENTER key press, request focus on the current
fieldwidget's 'NextTabField'. However, this attribute defaults to NIL unless
you override the default TAB sequence. And I don't really fancy setting
the Next and Prev TabField for every onscreen field.
Anyone done this before using a simpler method?
By the way, I don't really want to get into a long thread about whether it is
good practice to bypass Windows (TM) standards or not. We require
fast data entry, and keyboard entry is essential for that.

The application we are building will replace legacy application and had similar
requirements to accommodate the current users. We solved this problem by creating a
special frame, appropriately named as the "Terminal Frame". It is distributed as
part of the Scaffolds framework.
The Terminal frame implements ENTER instead of TAB key. As you know the tabbing
order in a terminal frame (top to bottom, left to right) is different than windows
tabbing order (left to right, top to bottom). The Terminal frame solves the tabbing
problem by constructing a "field traverse list" which includes all the fields in a
window including nested views ordered according to their X,Y co-ordinates. It is a
recursive method works on the same lines as described by Sakharov, Nickolay in
earlier mail. The method also sets the NextTabField, PrevTabField references for
each field in the traverse list.
This framework is working very well for us. In a terminal frame world, you still
have some user training issues as some of the fields (OutlineField, DropList,
ArrayField, CheckBoxe etc.) behave differently for ENTER and TAB keys. But these
are minimal compared to a complete change in style.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating we abandon the TAB key
functionality in favour of the ENTER key. I just want to ADD the ENTER
key as a navigational aid for our 'legacy' users (and we have many). If it
is done right, there should be no need to tell the user about it. Their
transition to the new product would be virtually painless.
Since I posted my original question I've realised that the cost of
implementation is actually fairly low. And this is why. I have just
discovered that the default tab order defined by Forte (left to right, top to
bottom) is essentially useless for most of the windows we will be creating.
Therefore, we will need to override it by explicitly setting the
"NextTabField" and "PrevTabField" attributes of our input fields in virtually
every window. As I am writing the framework for our new product, I will
have to implement the facility to do this in the framework itself. And if we
have our tab order defined, then adding the ENTER key functionality is
minimal extra effort (see my original post). In fact, if I implement it in my
"CoreWindow" (the root of my windows framework inheritence tree), then
no-one will ever have to deal with it again.
The TAB key is not even much of a windows data-entry standard. Many
of our customers have defined secondary systems using Microsoft
Access, and it uses the ENTER key (along with the TAB key) to move
from field to field. Will these customers not complain that they cannot
use the ENTER key to move between fields if we don't implement it?
As we do not have the resources to completely rewrite our existing
COBOL system (over 2 million lines of code) in one go. We will be rolling
out the new system module by module. This means that a lot of our users
will be switching between the new windows interface and the text-based
unix telnet sessions. When I switch back and forth between windows
editors and 'vi' on the unix host, I experience first-hand how mixed
navigational facilities can hamper productivity!
Anyway, I was just hoping there might be a little setting somewhere in
Forte to switch this on, but as no-one has pointed it out, it seems unlikely.

I've got a Macbook Pro (2011) running OS X 10.6.8. At my home I have an ATT wireless hotspot for my internet, and a wireless router set up for printing. Every time I turn my laptop on or open the lid, it always connects to the router instead of the wireless hotspot. Is there a way to prevent OS X from automatically joining specific networks while still saving the password? Or can anyone suggest another fix for this annoying problem? I've already got my wireless hotspot at the top of my preferred networks list.
Oh, its a Macbook Pro 8,1, and I'm not afraid to poke around with a terminal to solve this issue.

Flash MX 2004 and the Intel-based Macs
Due to the demise of my previous computer I just bought one
of the new Intel-based Macs. Most of my programs seem to work fine
but Flash MX 2004 is crashing shortly after startup. Do I need to
upgrade before I can use Flash again?I have the same problem launching Flash 2004 on an intel imac 24 inch. All the other programmes of Studio 2004 launch apart from Flash. FYI Flash 8 installs and works fine.
I recollect that someone suggested writing a script(?) in Terminal to solve a similar problem with programmes crashing on launch. -
Firewire drives are locked in custom mode
I did and archive and reinstall on my notebook hard drive and after completing it all my external firewire drives are locked and in custom mode. I am unable to change them to read/write. I can unlock the drives, but appears that it has no effect. When I try to access the drives it tells me I have insufficient privileges. I have run apple disk utility and disk warrior on permissions with no success.
I just had a client who encountered this. What causes it and is there a simpler way to resolve it?
My client had 6 drives that had all their permissions set to custom and they were all in a locked state.
How is that even possible at all and why doesn't the permissions routine in Drive Utility solve it?
This was a seriously frightening ordeal and had I not found this thread all the data on those drives might have been lost.
Does anyone have any explanations?
As for the above fixes, I was able to utilize the terminal to solve the issue but not with any ease. I had to attempt it numerous times per drive and after about 20 to 30 attempts, I was able to finally get them all unlocked. -
AO output and control in Labview 7

Sorry to bother if you are NOT working in labview 7. I am working with a code written in labview 7 to control analogy output. The code looks like as follows
[AO CONFIG] -> [AO WRITE] (write a waveform in array) -> wait 2ms-8ms -> [AO CONTROL] (pause) -> wait 180ms -> [AO CONTROL](resume)
I am wondering upon the complete of AO WRITE, will the waveform sent to the buffer or to the real terminal? and if AO CONTROL (pause) pause the data transmission to the buffer or pause it sending to the terminal? As my understanding, from AO CONFIG to AO CONTROL, they are controlling the data transmission to the buffer only, and we need to use AO START to notify the buffer actually sending out the data to the terminal, is that correct? But what's really bording me is throughout the whole code, there is not AO START, so I don't know when the data will actually be sent out to the terminal.

Not only you use LabVIEW 7, but you also appear to be using the Traditional DAQ drivers (T-DAQ). I’m not really familiar with T-DAQ, so I don’t know what AO CONTROL does. If you look on the Help file for NI-DAQ, it should help you with the description. However, I can help you with what goes on with the DAQmx drivers.
Now, what happens in DAQmx on a regular continuous generation is: When you call the DAQmx Write, you are writing the waveform you built in software to the ADE memory (LabVIEW buffer). When you call DAQmx Start, you transfer the data from the ADE memory to the PC buffer. Then, the PC buffer will transfer the waveform to the DAQ card’s FIFO.
After that, a couple of things can happen: If you have regeneration activated, the FIFO keeps the samples it was transferred and just re-runs them. If regeneration is not activated, then the PC buffer is continuously sending information to the DAQ card’s FIFO.

IMac late 2009 crashing with Maverick
I have a problem with my iMac (late 2009) that I cannot solve. It has become very slow, and crashes regularly after some time. Impossible to repair it, neither from the disk recovery partition, nor an external HD boot and using Disk Utility. So everytime I have to download Maverick again and install it to be able to work. I have noticed that after the fresh installation, and and a few days of working, Disk Utility shows problems with Disk permissions that need to be repaired. This occurs systematically.
To complete the story, the iMac was working fine when I bought it, but was returned to Apple for the HD substitution (Apple replacement programme). After this, and/or after installing Maverick (but I am not sure the 2 things are related), the problem started.
I have also tried PRAM resetting, no effect. Any suggestion?For 2009 iMac owners on Mavericks, I recommend this procedure. Saved me a lot of frustration after almost a month of constant crashes and getting no work done.
I downloaded a temperature monitor to see what was happening. Before the fix, the temperature on the "north bridge heat sink” would just go up and up without fail. Particularly when using flash or a video related application. It would just keep rising until until the graphics card just shuts down.
It’s a 3 year old bug related to 10.6.3 and GPU drivers (ATI/AMD). Here’s the link to the guy who figured it out and should be testing for apple. You have to use terminal to solve the issue. He explains everything in detail.

After the fix, the temperature at the graphics card stays level. I’ve also decided to use a fan control app for the moment so temperatures stay around 50 and the iMac runs like it should. Even in my hot room in the summer.

MBP Boots Forever/Crashes on First (but not Second) Boot
Hi,
I am experiencing a somewhat odd phenomenon with my MBP:
If I close the lid without sleeping the MBP, the battery might keep on draining and when I open the MBP again later, all battery charge is gone.
If I now reconnect (power) and boot up the MBP, the MBP will not go past the stage where there is a grey background and the "beachball"... I had it in this stage for up to 2 hours, it is just not booting any further. If I do a hard reset (holding power button for 8 sec), the MBP boots normally... So, the MBP crahes on the first boot, but boots (always) successfully on the second boot.
The problem with the current state of things is, that I am regularily loosing work, as the latest files that were open are gone if not saved (which I tend to forget, as closing the lid does not always, and should never, lead to a system crash). I have Word set to auto-save every two minutes, but that does not always work and some other tools do not have that option.
My questions are:
1.) How can I make sure that closing the lid actually sleeps the MBP? (I was researching the problem and found that some people claim that this might be a problem of the Mac not being able to quickly enough dump my 8GB of RAM, and that disabling "safe sleep" via Terminal might solve the problem... it did not help).
2.) How can I prevent the make from freezing on the first boot? (I have also research that, but could not really find somehting specific. I have tried checking disk with disk utility (all OK) and reparing permissions to no avail).
I also had the MBP checked for hardware issues in the Store, and had Mavericks clean installed not long ago (had the same problem with Snow Leopard)...
Could it be my 4GB RAM extension? Or some specific app causing the problem? Any standard procedures to follow to narrow the issue down?
